I visited Simmons Welwyn Garden City today at 16:25 approximately, went in, it wasn’t busy or anything, an elderly lady with glasses served us, I was overly polite asked for a chicken roll, and 2 sweets, I was never asked whether or not we want it to eat in or takeaway which is your job to ask not mine to tell you, I am the costumer. I proceeded to ask the lady, is it okay for us to sit here? (At the front not at the back because I respect they close around 17:00) her attitude was appalling, she looked at me and my friend and spoke with such an attitude and said “well not really you paid for takeaway” and I proceeded to say oh okay you didn’t ask if we wanted eat in or takeaway so I told her can we amend this and she had such a miserable attitude, the food was put in bags and my total was £7 and then when we amended so we can sit in changed to £10. With no plates provided whatsoever, the customer service on this place is never inviting, the food and sweets are so good but the customer service and the way they speak is utterly rude. If you are not able to communicate and provide the bare minimum such as a smile, do not work in customer service. I have worked in customer service for years and I can guarantee you this is not what it should be. Be nice to people and polite if anything, you are not doing me a favor. Makes it feel like a chore to see them working here and you’re supposed to be the face of the company. Great food and amazing sweets to bakers and chefs, but front house customer service is -0. Do better!

Customer service is lacking at this Simmons compared to others we go to. The staff are all junior, show no urgency to serve you quickly, the owner stands there with her clip board and graphs whilst the manager does nothing to motivate his staff to serve customers properly. It doesn’t surprise me that there are a lot of other shocking reviews of this Simmons store. Others in Hertfordshire are much better i.e Hatfield, Knebworth and Stevenage. The team who run it need to up their game.

Popped into Simmons today for quick sandwich Lady serving me wore gloves (great) but then served Ham, onion, cucumber, Halloumi, warm mushrooms, sausage roll and then a cake…. While wearing the same gloves, not a thought about cross contamination

I’ve been going to various Simmons branches for over eight years. It’s always been fine-a bit pricy but fine-but never again. This morning I ordered two small white rolls, each with two sausages and two rashers of bacon. No butter. No sauce. No salad…and a 330ml juice. So, two rolls, four sausages, four bacon and a drink…FOR TWELVE POUNDS!!! To call it a rip off would be doing a disservice to all the rip offs in the world. There are many vacant shops in Welwyn Garden City and this will soon been another one. Absolutely shocking profiteering.

This place started off really well and used to be my favourite cafe. Now though it is very noisy and understaffed, so the tables are not cleaned. They apply a surcharge to sit in and eat and the food is overpriced! It is a shame as I used to like it here.

All Simmons shops are over priced, service in most could be better, young people that don't really care, food is mostly over cooked where its been sat under the lights, and the biggest wind up is if you go in there at breakfast time,10/11 am there's never any sausages or bacon cooked,it's always in the oven, put it in earlier come on,also bacon's always hard, cousin's bakery 1000%better,worst Simmons is Welham Green

Simmons isn't a bland national chain... or an overly expensive 'cute' cafe. It occupies a middle ground of cakes, teas and backed goods that are affordable, without the blandness that comes from national chains. It has a lovely location on HowardsGate. Despite the dry weather the gardens still look lovely. There is some outdoor seating at Simmons, with little traffic and a view over the gardens. My colleague who was there visiting for work thought it felt like being on holiday! Welwyn Garden City has a lovely town centre, spending some time in Simmons watching the world go by is a great way to enjoy it.

Visited on a Sunday for coffee and cake. Now, I’ve always loved Simmons for that ‘traditional’ bakery experience. And the food is always nice, expensive but almost always worth it. However, the restaurant/sit down area is badly managed. Out of the 11 free tables (it wasn’t busy at all) all were filthy. I chose the cleanest I could find and when my coffee and cake arrived asked the teenager who served me to clean it. He come over and cleaned my table but walked straight past all the others. Is it now the norm to only clean tables when a customer asks? I’m presently sitting at my table watching another family walk round looking for a clean table and then leave. Stick to what you’re good at Simmons, stick to being a bakery. UPDATE: been here 30 minutes now and despite watching the staff tending to the cutlery still no sign of the tables being cleaned. I now can understand why it’s so empty in here.

I have tried Simmons multiple times and have never been pleased with service or food. Disappointing when making a conscious effort to support smaller, local businesses. On this most recent visit, we were seated promptly but waited a while to have our order taken, something the server indicated they would be back to do shortly. Whilst waiting we browsed the display counters which showcased old sandwich fillings most of which had been mixed across other pots and would be worrying if you had allergies. The potato wedges looked as though they had been partially heated to melt the cheese and then placed back in the chiller, again they looked a little worse for wear. We opted for a toastie (safest choice) and a hot pastry which was thankfully palatable. I have stopped bothering with coffee at Simmons as it is horrific. Bland, watery and the product of a machine that is capable of foam on a par with that of Fairy Liquid. After more waiting and after numerous attempts of aiming to attract the attention of a server so we could pay the bill (again something that had happened at the tables of the surrounding customers) I was rudely told to go to the counter and pay. If you like uncertainty when ordering lunch, this is the place for you. If you are in search of value for money, good food and pleasant service, look elsewhere. Simmons is consistently poor at all levels.

Welwyn Garden city is short on independent cafes. Surprising really as the town centre - and the gardens on Howard's Gate - are very attractive. Simmons is probably your best choice. Its mainly a bakery but does hot drinks and food to eat now. As you'd expect from a bakery - mostly baked goods and home made cakes. Friend I was with is vegan and we managed some nice sausage rolls, fresh green salad and a tasty Marmalade cake. Service prompt, friendly and efficient.

Asked my husband to get me a ham salad on wholemeal bread. It was disgraceful. Fatty ham that was discoloured from not being covered and not kept at correct temperature. Tomato and cucumber obviously sliced on machine at lowest cutting level. Wholemeal bread crust literally rock hard. No onion, red or otherwise! What if I want a cheese and onion?? All salad was chucked in the middle of the bread so fell out when you picked it up. Husband asked about pasties and was told they were meat. Oh for goodness sake. Cheese and see through tomato croissant was vile. I might pop in myself tomorrow for a little chat as I am furious about the quality of food and husband felt staff didn't want to be there or be polite to him. Big mistake!

if you want consistently miserable staff, this is the place to go. Tables rarely get a wipe between customers. Where to queue for eat-in or takeaway is not clear, and if you wait in the wrong queue for 20 mins to finally get served they'll tell you to join the other long queue. Coffee is nowhere near as good as Nero next door, and cakes are over sweet with wasp toppings in the summer.

We bought a rainbow birthday cake from Simmons (£25). We ordered it online the day before and collected it on the day. It's quite a big cake and it is very very rich, sweet and tasty. You do not need a big piece because you cannot finish it but you will want to have more later. It was my daughter's birthday cake and everyone loved it, including parents and siblings. So much so that they are all going to get the same/similar cake for their birthday.

UPDATE - the response you see below is clearly to try and save face as this is in the public domain. 6 months has passed and despite multiple calls and emails to the email address Doug details below. We have not received our refund. Doug is a scammer. DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL. Me and my family had a stay booked in May but unfortunately had to cancel because the restaurant was due to be closed due to a change in owner days before our trip. We were promised a refund, several emails and phone calls to the owner, Doug, who each time sweet talked me and told me he was going to transfer the money. It has been 2 months now and I still have not received my money back. It is clear I have been done over and fobbed off so unfortunately we are now having to pursue a case with the small claims court. We were planning on visiting later this year but definitely won't be now, customers lost. By the looks of things we aren't the only ones who have had this type of treatment!
