Simla Restaurant in Newcastle upon Tyne

Booked a table for 8:30 when I called to book they said they are usually busy but this time should be fine for two people. We were greeted at the door into a passage way and the lady was extremely lovely, table would be a little while but shouldn't be long. Five mins later we were asked to go inside to stand at the bar. 20 mins later. There was then a table of 4 (soon 6 free). As we were stood at the bar this table was then filled. We booked our table nearly a week earlier we were eventually sat 25 mins late. We received free poppadoms for the delay which was nice but we were only two people.. Food menu was very adequate with minimal veggie options. Small venue, no adequate bar facilities, food wasn't spectacular however the service was a 5/5.

The experience at Simla was just amazing. I had the scallops and the gunpowder prawns. Abdul, who served us was very professional and very friendly. He suggested the best selection from the menu and had the best time at Simla. The gunpowder prawns is a must try. 😍

Newcastle appears to have a lot of good quality Indian restaurants and ths is definitely one of the good ones. An extensive menu with plenty of vegetarian options and a good drinks list (I love Bombay Bicycle IPA). Food was very, very good. Service was efficient and well timed and the staff friendly and professional. We'd highly recommend.

There are a few Indian restaurants in a small area here and thisnone is the top of the lot. An excellent meal with great service and friendly staff. Definitely will return.

I use to love this place as a musician it was a go to place as food was good fairly priced and open until well beyond 2am Food is ok now but too fancy so as to justify the huge price - it use to be friendly but now its staffed by young staff that care more about their looks than service They have stopped doing poppadoms and now do a bowl of shapes (not many in but pricy) And shutting too early - ive given up on it

Amazing food, can highly recommend the lamb shank rogan josh and the paneer kofta, and the best naan I've ever had. Service was faultless too, so quick and attentive

Came here to look for the Star of India restaurant we used to come to back in the 1970s. I was so pleased it was still here, although now named Simla. Food was excellent and the staff were so friendly and helpful. The place has a really welcoming atmosphere and the decor is so much better than it was 50 years ago! I'll be back on my next visit. Thanks Simla for a lovely experience.

Brilliant service, curry was the best ever and accommodated additional garlic and chilli! Wine lovely and introduced a different option of mixed reds! Fabulous experience don’t miss out!

Fabulous service (thanks Adil) and food at Simla - the great reviews are well deserved. Highly recommend the chettinad, palak paneer, chicken tikka masala, sev puri and scallops! Pistachio ice cream also delicious.

Best Indian restaurant in Newcastle by a clear distance

No other Indian can compete in Newcastle and we’ve tried a good few! Scratch that, no other Indian I have EVER been to can compete. By far the best we’ve had. Wow, incredible food! And the service made the experience even better. Such nice people. 10/10! We will be back!

Been here before and was great but this visit was even better. Adil, on the front of house remembered me from last visit and had superb service, along with the rest of the staff. He is definitely a reason why we will keep visiting again. The food was amazing too and all well priced.

I was staying away from home on a business trip and found Simla really close to my hotel (The Vermont). I started with poppadoms and a chutney selection, which was great. Then I had lamb chops, which were spicy and so tender. For main I had lamb jalfrezi, lots of juicy lean lamb in a rich tasty sauce! The meal and atmosphere was so good I had to come back the next day, having the same meal but this time trying the lamb chettinad - which if possible was even nicer! The head waiter also suggested a special naan, which went perfectly with my meal. The next time I’m up in the area, I’ll definitely be visiting.

Had tasty indian food after long time in UK. I must recommend to have veg tikki, it's superb. They also customized curries with expected spice. Garlic Nan was also soft.

Despite the Indian restaurant's appealing location and pleasant ambience, along with attentive service, our recent dining experience was disappointing. The Paneer Kofta was overly sweet initially and became excessively oily and spicy upon request for adjustment. The Tandoori roti quickly turned rubbery, which was unexpected. Portion sizes were smaller than expected. Overall, the food quality was below average, detracting from an otherwise enjoyable atmosphere.

I dined at Simla tonight and had an incredible experience. The food was outstanding, with each dish bursting with authentic Indian flavors. The service was impeccable, and Abdul, our server, really stood out. He was attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, and went above and beyond to ensure we had a memorable dining experience. I highly recommend Simla and commend Abdul for his exceptional service. I will definitely be returning soon.

Possibly one of the best Indian meals in a very long time. We dined with 2 vegetarians and there was a fantastic selection for us all. Fresh and beautifully spiced food with great service and lovely staff. Would highly recommend but you’ll need to book!

The food and service were both incredible, I asked the waiter which curry was most like a Chicken Tikka Balti (because it wasn't on the menu), and they made it specially for me! Would recommend.

Simla does the most amazing Palak Paneer that I've ever had. Honestly, my favourite Indian dish! The service is amazing - one of the waiters remembered my partners name the whole night and all of the staff were so pleasant. The place itself is beautiful, too. I couldn't recommend it more!

The best restaurant we ate at in Newcastle! We showed up without a booking but the staff asked us to come back and found us a table on a busy Friday night. The food is incredible, so many options (meat, fish and vegetarian) and the atmosphere is great. Simla is the perfect spot for a romantic date or fun evening with friends. Abdul took amazing care of us - he was the perfect host and an absolute credit to the team. We will be back! (We visited in February 2024)

While the prices might be a tad high for students, the quality of the food at this restaurant more than makes up for it. Each dish we tried was superb, bursting with flavor and presented beautifully. Very good Indian food and therefore packed on a Friday evening. We had three different dishes of chicken, lamb and king prawns, so we could share and try the different flavours. All were very good, but special praise for the Chicken Tikka Masala, as one of the best ever eaten anywhere.

Recommended to Simla - and not disappointed- modern Indian cuisine without losing the essence of a good Indian - really tasty dishes, great service - a cut above most Indian restaurants.

In a word; superb. Make sure you leave room for pudding & Gaelic coffee. Lovely, intimate setting, ideal for couples, with a friendly, attentive, but not intrusive staff whose aim seems to focus on you enjoying your meal. One word of advice; make sure to book; on spec doesn't seem to fare well.

Beautiful food, had the tarka dal and garlic naan and they were sublime. Service was very excellent too, highly recommended!

Food very average but only surpassed by the inattentive and rushed service. Asked to move to another seat during our meal was a nice treat right next to the door too. Guys your location is ideal for cleaning up and being amazing but you treat people like this and charge £9 for the pieces of tikka, well good luck.

The food is always amazing here, superb quality and you always know it'll be a fantastic dining experience reminiscent of my recent six month cycle tour in India.
