The original nearby Victorian building was knocked down in 1924, and the half timber framed replacement version of The Old Silk Mill opened in 1928. They sell 1 regularly changing guest ale, 2 regular very local Dancing Duck ales, Bass, but I headed straight for their regular Oakham Citra, because, well, because it is one of my favourite ales, and it was very good too! A warm and very friendly atmosphere, with staff and other customers affable alike. I didn't eat here, but the food I saw being served to other tables looked delicious, I was tempted, but had alternative arrangements... maybe next time!

I was treated to Birthday lunch by my Sister at The Old Silk Mill Pub on 21 October 2024 at 1230. We were greeted by a lovely young lady who took us to the restaurant area rather than the cosier bar area where we have eaten previously. We immediately noticed the floor tiles were wet in the restaurant area and there was a strong smell of bleach! We were taken to the furthest corner of that room opposite the kitchen doors. During the greeting the waitress told us there has been some 'small flies' on that table and that if we saw any to 'feel free to move to another table'. We got our drinks and while waiting for food encountered 4 tiny midge-type flies crawling on the table. They came back as quick as we killed them! We moved to another table but, during dinner, the flies returned. When quizzed on the problem at the end of the meal, the young lady said "the problem only started yesterday on the first table you (we) sat at, we have spent the morning cleaning but they are still there". Which made us ask ourselves, 'why did you take us to that table in that case?'. The young lady and gentlemen who were on duty were 100% brilliant and attentive, but these flies, coupled with the strong smell of bleach and kitchen doors continually swinging open at the side of us in a large empty room, ruined the experience. We were the only couple in the entire area! Would have been much more enjoyable in the cosy bar area where we have been seated in the past. The pleasant food helped it from being a complete disaster. 😢

Came to derby to see a band and stopped here for lunch. Menu looked good. Lots of options and I'm vegetarian. Ordered a baguette and soup. Husband had burger. It wasn't too busy when we arrived but still a bit of a wait so allow time if you're starving. Didn't realise how filling baguette would be ! Burger was delicious but the best bit was the butternut squash soup. Best thing ever!!!! Probably not the cheapest in town but you get what you pay for and everything was quality so all in all quite reasonable.

Stopped here for a couple of drinks and some lunch. We enjoyed the patio in the sunshine, but wish we didn’t order the food. It was really poor. The potato pie was dry and tasteless, the chicken baguette was dry, bread was old, the chicken was also dry and grey in places. Cheese board was a rip off for what it was. The fries were tiny and greasy. The cheese on the chips with cheese bucket was just salty cheap stuff. Honestly the worst meal we’ve had for a while. Bar man was a bit miserable as well. Glad to leave in the end

June has been the month i crossed the threshold into 60. To celebrate I had visitors from far and wide for the weekend. On the Friday we ate and drank at The Old Silk Mill Now I will disclose I have known the proprietor for many many years. That said, he would always expect an honest review of this quirky little place that is part of his network of simply brilliant pubs. The OSM has an incredible history. Its future hopefully secure in the hands of Martin, Claire and Team. EVERYTHING was excellent. From booking in advance some 8 months ahead, through to execution. We are talking a group of over 20... all hungry from long journeys. Did not disappoint. The food super and the ales to match. The wine list designed to fit with the offering and the service outstanding. How they produce such a succulent and varied menu from not the biggest kitchen in the world is a mystery. 5 stars is not enough.

Popped in for a bite to eat, after taking the dog for a walk. Waited a while for the food, but so worth the wait. Delicious, freshly made food and a very good size portion. Value for money. Made to feel very welcome by all the staff, even our dog was well looked after. Bowl of water, lots of biscuits. ( So much better than weather spoons a couple of weeks before). Will definitely recommend and will be back soon.

We visited The Old Silk Mill with two adults and a ravenous teenager. The atmosphere is modern and chill, perfect for a date, celebration, or night out with pals. The selection of food spans the gamut for any palate and most everything sounded delish, so, yes, we ordered way too much and shared the dishes. We underestimated the size of the portions, which were plenty to fill hungry peeps (and actually plenty to take home for a lunch, too). The Lorks a Lordy burger was juicy and yummy. In the Pie 3, my fave was the chicken with tarragon version; the beef shin version was a close second. Neither pie was heavy, and there were chock full of tender meet. Although we didn't like the sausage and ham pie, it was probably the tomato base that just didn't jive for us. I think this meal is really enough to share. We also shared the vol au vent starter with a creamy mild Hartington stilton (hearty vegetarian dish) and a side salad. Our servers Chloe and Graham were funny, personable, and attentive throughout the evening even though the pub was so busy. We'll definitely go back to sample more of the food and atmosphere!!

I had the pleasure of dining here in Derby with a group of friends. We had to put our choice of meals forward, before we dined there. The menu only showed a venison dish as being gluten free, which I didn’t like. So I asked if there could be any other options that could be made gluten free. They then came back with 5 more dishes for me to choose from. I decided on fish & chips with home made chunky tartare sauce, chips and mushy peas. No sooner had we all sat down the meals were brought out bang on time! Which I have to say was amazing as there were 9 of us. The fish was a large piece of haddock that was lightly grilled, it was lovely & flaky. I enjoyed it immensely I also had an affogato for desert, the coffee was really nice. So, I would recommend a gluten free meal for coeliacs like myself here. I would also urge them to make a change to their menu though, as these days people often view them online and like I did you only see the venison amongst a vast array of dishes. This could be possibly limiting their potential for gaining more gluten free diners. Many thanks for a great evening.

Arrived at 13:00 ordered at 13:10 food arrived at 13:55. We asked how long the food would be and told 30 minutes is normal as it’s cooked fresh. But 45minutes isn’t 30minutes. We did over hear other customers being advised that food was taking 45 minutes. We were not told this if we had been that would have changed the review. Chicken burger warm not hot and soggy due to putting a watery coleslaw on the bun. Balmoral chicken is normally chicken stuffed with haggis wrapped in bacon not here no bacon. Was looking forward to trying this place but I’d advise against it.

After booking a table for four online Sunday morning, we arrived same afternoon. We were seated, and then told that there would be an hour wait on food. We had a child with us and found this unacceptable. After speaking to a member of staff, I was informed that a party of 14, were late for their meal hence the delay, and anyway everyone has to wait 30 minutes as the food is freshly prepared. As a small child was with us. The pub needs to not take online bookings if they are very busy. The dining area is small and dinners are squashed in, having no privacy or room to get in or out of their seats.

Were recommended to come here for Sunday lunch but unfortunately it wasn’t as good as we anticipated. The meat, roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding were very nice, it was the vegetables that were a let down. We were given shredded cabbage and only a couple of slices of carrot, neither was very warm. We mentioned it to the waitress and as we had waited ages for the food we asked for some hot gravy to warm it up. Definitely didn’t live up to expectations.

It was great food. There was one stocky bald guy who was a really good waiter. He was working his socks off. Then other staff were not so good. Chatting with friends at the bar while our large party needed drinks. A couple of the kitchen staff wandering about with a poor attitude, looking like they didn't want to be there. Should be happy to work there. It's a brilliant pub and they have a nice atmosphere to work in. I have high standards when I go for a meal. It's a rare treat for people. I don't want to see staff acting like they're doing you a favour by being there. On a side note you can see food staff on their phones touching work surfaces when the kitchen doors open. I would say that's quite unhygienic for food preparation. If I see staff using phones etc who prepare food it makes me worry about hygiene. It's like when I went in McDonald's and saw staff constantly touching their face. I've not been back since. Was 5 years ago. I might be wrong they might be cleaning their hands straight after. Just telling you what I saw and how you might be able to do a bit better. Appreciate good staff are in short supply at the moment.

We’ve just finished our drinks and could have left before these so called bookings turned up . I saw three groups of people turned away including a couple who came and sat next to us across road and was told the same thing . Such bad management. Only 2 ales on, which was a disappointment, but not a disaster, however the food was very poor. I ordered the steak pie in shortcrust pastry, and received a small slice of reheated pie, with nothing but gravy and onion as a filling. When I made the waiter aware, the individual agreed it wasn’t acceptable, and went on to tell me the food was all of a poor standard now, as the pub had been taken over by a chain.

I visited The Silk Mill on 10/8/20 as part of a group of 6 adults and a child to have a meal for my mum's birthday. We rang and booked a table in advanced due to the worry it would be busy during the Help Out To Eat Out scheme and informed them we were a party of 7. Upon arrival we were told we would have to sit in a 4 and a 3 which was very annoying as they didn't tell us in advance and we were there to celebrate a birthday. Our voices would have to be very raised in order to hear the other table even though the pub was empty. I visit The Silk Mill regularly and it is one of my favourite pubs in Derby but this review will be solely about this visit. I ordered the Loaded Burger and Chunky chips. On the burger was a 6oz British beef patty, applewood smoked cheddar, rarebit cheese sauce, smoked streaky bacon and burger sauce. This was served with a side of chunk chips and chilli ketchup. The burger was extremely juicy which was 1 of the only plusses here. It was such a messy burger and was falling to bits whilst eating it and the chips have gone seriously downhill. Overall, on this occasion I was extremely underwhelmed by this. To improve the burger must hold together better and not be falling to bits and slipping off etc. And bring back those old chips!

First time back since covid with work colleagues. First time with the new menu. I asked for the £9 deal (2 courses) and got a halloumi fries and a loaded burger. When the bill arrived I was charged for the full price. I said that I asked the waiter for the £9 deal and asked why he didn't say this wasn't on it. I then spoke to the manager, who didn't think it was the responsibility of the waiter to tell me I got it wrong. Eventually got my drink.. (£2.40) taken off. Bizarrely the waiter told the last person in the party that their meal wasn't on the deal.. but on one else. Really disappointing especially as I said I wanted the £9 deal, and first time out in months. So paid nearly 16 quid for a 9 lunch.

Have enjoyed a Sunday roast here previously, but was let down tonight. Pub was very quiet despite it being bank holiday and the last eat out to help out day..It is only a small menu, but they were a few things we wanted to order which were unavailable- chicken burger and sticky toffee pudding. We opted for two beef burgers, both were crispy on the outside but undercooked and pink in the middle. My partner then ordered the white chocolate and lemon cheesecake, as the sticky toffee was unavailable. He was given a vanilla cheesecake with strawberry sauce- not really a problem, but they could have informed us there would be a substitution.Whilst we were eating a man walked in on the phone, without noticing the ‘wait here to be seated sign’. The staff proceeded to shout across the pub at him to get out, which he did. He then came back in with his friends, who were refused service because he had previously failed to see one sign. I appreciate these are stressful times and procedures need to be followed for everyone’s safety, but this felt like an overreaction by the staff members, and was handled badly. Particularly in the way they shouted across the pub and had a protracted argument, disturbing everyone else in the pub. We were disappointed in the undercooked burgers, lack of availability, not being informed of substituted cheesecake, and in the way they handled an innocent mistake from the man who failed to wait to be seated.

I tried several ciders from here and they are all spectacular. I ordered a steak and rarebit ciabatta with chunky chips. These are hands down the best home cooked chips in Derby, beautiful outer layer with great seasoning and such a lovely fluffy centre. The steak was perfectly pink and the rarebit was beautiful. The food here is fantastic. We had a lovely meal and excellent wine. The service was faultless. Lovely pub, great atmosphere. This was our first meal here and will definitely return.

We haven’t been to The Silk Mill for a while but decided to go tonight. Oh dear, what has happened? It was always such a busy and packed place with a good menu. It appears to have changed somewhat. The place was not as packed as usual and the menu- all I can say is dreadful. We would have been better off at Wetherspoons, as it would have given us more choice. Avoid- it’s had it’s day.

Used to be a cosy, quirky local. Had a lovely feel to it with candles lit at all times. Seems to have changed hands and gone downhill - feels more sparse, bits and pieces that are tasteless and don't fit, and has that awful pub chain style graphic everywhere.... I shuddered see a sign outside saying there is now live sport. Has become just like every other pub. I won't be going back.

arrived at 1.30 asked about food, told busy 45 min wait to order, so had a drink, tried to order 45 mins later still to busy to cope. party upstairs. kept waiting for 1 hour could'nt even take an order. It supposed to be a busy pub I would of though could handle 3 more covers, especially as we had waited for 1h 45mins. May be a change of management ?? because its been excellent in the past. Did notice menu did not look as extensive as previous visits.

With their wide range of beers, fabulous food, and friendly atmosphere, it's the must-visit in Derby. I would recommend the rabbit, it was delicious.

Just come back after having our Christmas dinner. The food was spot on, service was great, couldn’t do enough for you. It was extremely reasonable price for 5 courses! We had to pass on coffee and mince pies as after all those courses we couldn’t eat anymore. As it’s one of our favourite pubs to visit anyway, we look forward to returning in the new year.

I went to the Silk Mill for a dinner. I took the beef and duck pie which was recommended to me. It was ok, but not great. I liked the selection of beer and cider. Staff was friendly and efficient.

Really disappointed the range of veg, roast pots, parsnips,2 carrots strip, cabbage yorkie cauliflower cheese.Cauliflower cheese sparely melted on top, parsnips boiled hard, carrots hard, bit of mash would have been nice but the yorkie was lovely.Better range of veg needed as the pub down the road has better value for same price.

Lovely pub with a great atmosphere, beer is spot on if you want to sit relax and unwind. When I visited there was a number of football fans in but was really nice place to be

Firstly I should say the staff are lovely, they made it really easy to book a table for Sunday lunch with 2 dogs in tow belonging to visiting friends, which is not common for Derby (often places say they are dog-friendly but you can't actually book a table just just have to turn up and hope for the best!)

My friend and I came here on the off chance without booking but we were lucky and found a lovely cosy spot in the snug. The lovely Lisa served us and we both decided to have the roast dinner, there were plenty of other options too. The dinner was lovely and there was plenty of it! Lovely roasties and homemade Yorkshire puds too. There were some yummy choices of dessert too but we were absolutely stuffed from the wonderful dinner so had a coffee too which was also well made. My friend went to the toilet and said it was best ladies ever!! A highly recommended little gem we will visit again. Great service , nice location and good value for money too.

I must say it's brilliant hence our monthly returns. The Sunday lunch just gets better and better. My plate was over spilled with fresh cut slices of beef and the Yorkshire puds were home made, big and fluffy. I was amazed to see that there were also unlimited amounts that you were allowed for FREE, yes for FREE Wow! The veg was also fresh and we had our own little gravy boat . We've already booked for next month and can't wait to meet up with our family in such great surroundings. Thank you Silk Mill it's a 10/10 from us.

Whilst still serving food & menus on the table etc - they wouldn’t take my order of a bowl of chips, then continued to serve food around me & take more food orders, although I think desert. Certainly didn’t go out there way to be helpful. Very disappointed, if not a bit offended by the service. It’s a shame because otherwise seemed nice enough.

Disappointing. I was a big fan when the Secret Dining Company ran it but it has now gone 'corporate'. The quirky atmosphere is gone, as are the jokes in the Gents. The beer selection has gone downhill and the food offering is less interesting. There are many better pubs in Derby so I won't be back in a hurry. Plus I almost got ripped off at the bar!

Fab little pub with a great range of real ales! We visited on a sunny hot Saturday and sat up in the beer garden. Really pretty with flowers, great shade if you want it. Tables are a little squeezed together but more chance of getting a seat so can't complain.

Went with my friends at lunch time. I had the sirloin steak cooked medium rare. Oh my goodness it melted in my mouth. It was cooked to perfection as were my friends meals. Can't wait for our next get together. Thank you silk mill.

Disappointed with this visit for a family get together for a meal and drinks. Very poor service throughout- had to repeatedly ask for service to order the meals and drinks. We sat near the bar and could see staff standing around but not serving clients. Two of us ordered a kebab meal off the special menu and were very unhappy with the quality of the food. Spoke to bar manager and this was removed from our bill which was good, however it left 2 of us eating much less and coming away hungry- not great after a ‘meal out’ This pub is 5 minutes walk away from my house. I’ve visited 3 times in the last few months, choosing different meals each time. I’ve been disappointed by each visit with the quality of food, but yesterday the service and food was very poor. I will not be visiting again for a meal until I hear the meals and service has improved

Situated on one of the main roads into Derby if you blink you will miss it. More of a takeaway cafe but there is very limited seating inside and a bench outside with parking at the rear. This little cafe stocks Project D doughnuts but get there early as they seem to sell out quickly.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch here today. Best Sunday lunch in a long time. Food was very tasty, good portions, meat very tender, I had pork, my daughter had beef & gammon. And above all crispy roasties. Staff were very friendly Would definitely recommend
