Blue Jay in Derby

Had a lovely carvery served by Gary, great bloke thanks so much the food was lovely, followed by some beautiful cake for pudding. Cracking place and atmosphere.

Always enjoy a drink here, but I do think staff handling food and people's plates shouldn't be fussing dogs and then not washing hands before serving someone else. Saw 3 different members of staff do this on the same day

I love pub food and usually you pay a reasonable price for this style of food. But here, I paid over £20 for a sirloin steak, which was probably the worst sirloin I have had. Salads are just ridiculously dry, with no dressing. Yet paying like it would be restaurant quality, which it wasn't. I'm quite disappointed, but I will know for the next time on what I should not waste my money

Cracking carvery by Gary. Just the ticket after a 3 hour drive. Really enjoyed the food and the service is top notch.....

Absolutely worst service I have experienced there I will not be visiting again Ordered food 1 hour later still had not received 1 person serving behind the bar Really poor do not deserve any customers at all Never really complained about other places but this was extremely poor

Went for a meal for grandad's birthday and it was lovely the meat fell apart lovely and all the veg was actually cooked rather than steamed it was great. The only thing that i didn't like is that the gravey was very watery and the sauces were too but they were still nice.

Visited on Sunday without reservation and from the entrance the atmosphere felt calm and service was very welcoming. We had some issues while ordering through the app and Phil was absolutely amazing and helpful while taking our order. He's a wonderful asset to the team and we are more than happy to visit again. The food didn't disappoint and arrived quickly.

Food was good only thing I can really say that let my visit down was the fact I was never told there was a 45 minute wait if ordering off the main menu instead of carvery. If I was given this information I probably would of ordered carvery.

Horrible staff. 2 hour wait for food and orders were still wrong. Staff were so unhelpful and no service to our table.more of them standing around doing nothing then actual work.

Terrible service from start to finished. Ordered the mothers day set menu, desserts came out before starters, sent them back with a look of disgust from the waitress. Mains never arrived. Desserts came out AGAIN. Manager put a 'rush' on mains. 3 hours after we were seated we left without having actually had dinner.

I had hunters chicken which had no sauce the bacon was cremated and the chicken was so dry .. I ate a few chips .. there was only 1 staff member waiting tables so didn't get a chance to change my meal so was very disappointed 😕

I had the chilli. I wasn't overly impressed for me it lacked flavour. My grandson had a spicy burger . He felt similar to me. My daughter had sausage and mash which she enjoyed but would have liked a bit more gravy. The kitchen staff when came out to the carvery was extremely noisy. He just banged the lids down the same with the trays.

Really improved, we had mixed reports about the food there but you delivered 👌 fantastic

After not visiting for years, I booked a table. Such a nice calm atmosphere. Clean, well decorated. Carvery was amazing. Will definitely go back soon

Had to wait 5 mins at the bar to be served as nobody was there, yet tge place was very quiet. I asked to be told when the food was about ready so the person who had the carvery could get theres but we weren't told. The food can only be described as very warm, not hot, my gammon was tough and dried out and some of the carvery food had been in there so long it was charred. We were sat outside the toilet door in the children's area, when we were the only ones down there, and we got the horrible smell from them every time the door . opened (we moved tables ourselves) The children's play area floor was dirty, the edges were black and my grandsons hands and feet black when he came out. All in all a very poor visit, and we won't be returning again.

Lovely little hotel, clean. Comfy and enjoyable. First hotel I've been too that's not tight with the tea and milk sachets, 10/10!

Their slogan Eat Well Sleep Well definitely lives up to all expectations. Located within 10 minutes drive to Pride Park, the rooms are very clean and comfortable. Special mention to assistant manager, Gareth and his team at the bar/restaurant who were all professional, friendly and made me feel at home away from home. The selection of beer, wine and spirits are impressive. The restaurant is outstanding with great selections from small plates, pub classics to carvery. This restaurant is family friendly and has a play area for children in the restaurant to keep them occupied. I will definitely be returning on my next trip to Derby 🫶🏼🫶🏼

A very clean and welcoming pub. All the staff were friendly and polite. (A very rare thing to see nowadays). It's well worth a visit, even if it's just to be treated kindly. PS the foods great too.

Staff are fab and work hard, food was as expected for pub food and I had steak which was cooked medium rare like I asked for.. generous over 5's meals . We stayed over and it was very reasonable/cheap really.. our room was clean, comfy beds..all you need so no complaints at all..

My family and i also with friends too have started to visit the Blue Jay more and more frequently. I have not had a bad experience, the staff have always been welcoming too. It is great for kids indoors with their inside play area, more so for toddlers than older kids.

Pretty good outskirts marston pub with rooms. Usual buffet and regular menu. Perfect for me on my visit

Visited for a meal with friends 30.1.25, staff were very friendly, food was lovely and served hot and in a timely manner. Pub was very busy and was told the food would be 45 mins but it was less than 30 so excellent service.

Had a lovely meal had the carvery absolutely delicious and had pudding was delicious staff very friendly kind and very helpful and polite had a lovely time definitely would recommend going for a meal or anything else definitely go again

Always a go to in Derby! Absolutely fantastic venue, lovely staff and plenty of space to sit and enjoy your evening.

Overall, I had a good experience. The Blue Jay Derby was in fact the most convenient option for me based on the place I had to work during my business trip, and it was a life saver. The room was well equipped and comfortable in my opinion, with all the things a guest need. I also liked the options in the menu of the pub, the food was good, and the staff always very friendly. The only thing I would suggest as improvement is regarding the cleanliness. Well, I didn't request my room to be cleaned on a daily basis because in my opinion is a waste of resources, but even after cleaning, I could spot a bit of dust in some corners, as well as in the hallway and stairs. If I ever pass by Derby again, I want to stop for a visit.

Great service and staff always make sure your happy. Great range of food on the menu and carvery has a good range of meat and veg . Cooked perfectly . The beef is my favourite

Got a table at short noticed even they were mainly reserved on new years day. Good british food. Not tasted carvery so cant say. Good service, very polite.

Had a lovely waitress Tasha absolutely amazing. Definitely visit again especially of she is our waitress. Couldn't be any more helpful and attentive. Above and beyond. Absolutely credit to the company

We come to the Blue Jay quite alot and we've never had a bad experience. I think there was a new years eve disco being set up but it didn't disrupt our evening. Food as usual was delicious and came out very quickly. The service we received from the staff, again was lovely as always. Can't complain as usual. I hope everyone enjoyed their night. Really enjoyed our lunch took my mum who is disabled and one of the chefs at the carvery was so good to her helping her put her veg on .The food was amazing the service and kindness of the staff was amazing the ambience was nice the price for 3 course was very good value for money I can't fault our experience you were all amazing

Had lunch on a Saturday here. The prices were very reasonable. I had a lovely carvery meal. Others had "surf and turf" and mixed grill which they thoroughly enjoyed. The staff were efficient and friendly. My 8 year old niece loved the play area. Can't fault it and will definitely be going again.

Christmas lunch absolutely disgusting baby potato still frozen asked waiter sort it dinner was just warm Christmas pudding brandy sauce was awful 4 of us left pudding did mention to waitress we've gone to blue jay last 3 years won't be doing it next year.rating 0000

Ordered drinks at bar polite young man served us. Ordered on qr code at table for food. Food was well presented and brought by polite young lady. Tasty food good price. Had desserts good customer service and communication from waiter, very polite. Had a go at quiz whilst there had a good evening.

Excellent Carvery Sunday lunch - 4 choices of meats, all lovely, and a great selection of vegetables to accompany. Attentive service and staff throughout.

The food was mostly good, my son enjoyed his 100% my gammon was very overcooked. On a repeat visit (28/11/2024) my daughter went up to get carvery and the server was talking over her head to the adult behind her. She tried lots of times to ask a question and was shushed and ignored. Disgusting behaviour.

We went here as a last minute shin dig. Was really good and we will definitely return in the future. Carvery was nice and good prices on the drinks. The only thing I believe could be improved is the quality of the loo roll. It wasn't pleasant if I'm honest. 9/10 from us

Nice cosy stay. Good room size and bathroom. Poor digital reception on TV. Restaurant expensive food below par. Carvery was not hot. Yorkshire puddings were cremated. Easy sign in, however hotel smelt bad outside unfortunately,

Place was not very clean, staff could do with being more welcoming, food was poor quality, expensive for what you actually got, service at bar was poor gentleman whom served us spoke to us with attitude not very impressed st all would not be attending again

All was ok apart from different costs of rooms. We are a party of 30plus, stopping 2 nights, having food and drinks. There's 4 different prices we are charged for same rooms, ranging from £126 for 2 nights, the £168, £176 and our price £193. So £67 pound more for same room type on same day.

Been in a few times wasn't to bad but prices a tad expensive but use there carpark more to eat macdonalds in nice quiet carpark plenty of room (but do take your rubbish with you ) ;)

First time at the Blue Jay taking advantage of the 30% discount on mains. On the whole a good experience, fairly quiet when I ordered food which was delivered quickly to the table. Only negative was that the mushy peas were almost cold, I should have complained but didn't. Will visit again as overall result was a decent meal.

Hardly any vegetables. Scrag end of beef that they would of served. Food was luke warm and the carvey area looked disgusting. The person serving came out chewing food then wiped his mouth with his hands then picked up the carving utensils. Won't be returning

Having visited with a 30% off mains voucher sent through that day, opted for here over pther places because of it. Served by a visibly tired and disinterested member of staff, complained he couldnt hear due to ambient noise in the restaurant. When asked for the house white, told “we dont have one” and a greasy list handed out. Most servers know to opt for the lowest price wine as standard if asked by the customer. Transaction comes to payment and discount code shown to server to be told “no you cant use that” with no initial explanation given.. when asked why as it had been recieved that day it was then explained that the small carvery isnt in the criteria and so changed to a regular. Rude abrupt and dismissive, server appeared to irritated by the whole interaction, also with people who were asking where they check in for the hotel. On a plus food was hot, well presented and the young lad clearing tables was very pleasant.

Carvery lukewarm, dry and not very nice. Left a drink on my table while i visited the toilet, when I got back someone had taken it way,asked an employee where's my drink !!!he said I will find out ... never saw him again ,very unprofessional.

Met some school friends for lunch and it seemed to be central to everyone. Food wasn't fantastic but it was edible. I had jacket potato with piri piri chicken. I found the chicken a little hard. The jacket didn't have any butter, that I noticed, and was a little dry. Staff were friendly.

Whilst the staff were very friendly and inviting. The chef was Very mean with the meat, you dont get a full slice and it is so thin! A carvery is all about the meat otherwise it would be called a vegery! Would not rush back.

A very noce clean hotel and restaurant. We stayed one night and were very pleased with our choice. Good location to visit family nearby.

Had a carvery ,meat was old and dry veg under cooked absolutely vile i couldn't eat it definitely would not recommend and we will never return.

Came for breakfast....a little disappointing. Continental breakfast...cereal and a pastry. Full breakfast was not hot and just poor. Coffee was good though!

Had the carvery on Sunday 29th Sept and it was bone dry looked like it had been sat for a while X was cold and even asked for it to be microwaved .. seemed like they were more focussed on the Xmas menu not great and won’t go back , defo better places in the area .

Lovely clean hotel with attentive staff. The food and service 4 was simply due to night workers not being able to get breakfast when rising. I'd suggest, just an option of cereal/bacon roll and a coffee to be available. You'd have had another £50 out of me that week. The burger I got for breakfast was undercooked in the center. I left the centre square on a skewer and told the staff member who came to check on my dinner and he didn't seem phased a bit.

This was the first time visiting the blue jay for a carvery, the food was cold. I had to ask the staff to reheat my food in the microwave, which they did. But you dnt expect cold reheated food. Unfortunately I will not be revisiting !

The food was ok, we both had the carvery, dogs are welcome. I've never seen a menu for dogs my two loved their roast dinner.

Since the blue Jay opened, the decor and tables are looking tired. The selection of real ales has now dwindled to stock items. On busy days it is very hard to get served.

The food was exactly as expected and arrived well within a reasonable time. The staff were so friendly and helpful. Love that it's dog friendly!! Seems to be lots things going on (quizs, music). We booked our works Christmas party while we were there.
