Blue Jay in Derby

First time at the Blue Jay taking advantage of the 30% discount on mains. On the whole a good experience, fairly quiet when I ordered food which was delivered quickly to the table. Only negative was that the mushy peas were almost cold, I should have complained but didn't. Will visit again as overall result was a decent meal.

Hardly any vegetables. Scrag end of beef that they would of served. Food was luke warm and the carvey area looked disgusting. The person serving came out chewing food then wiped his mouth with his hands then picked up the carving utensils. Won't be returning

Having visited with a 30% off mains voucher sent through that day, opted for here over pther places because of it. Served by a visibly tired and disinterested member of staff, complained he couldnt hear due to ambient noise in the restaurant. When asked for the house white, told “we dont have one” and a greasy list handed out. Most servers know to opt for the lowest price wine as standard if asked by the customer. Transaction comes to payment and discount code shown to server to be told “no you cant use that” with no initial explanation given.. when asked why as it had been recieved that day it was then explained that the small carvery isnt in the criteria and so changed to a regular. Rude abrupt and dismissive, server appeared to irritated by the whole interaction, also with people who were asking where they check in for the hotel. On a plus food was hot, well presented and the young lad clearing tables was very pleasant.

Met some school friends for lunch and it seemed to be central to everyone. Food wasn't fantastic but it was edible. I had jacket potato with piri piri chicken. I found the chicken a little hard. The jacket didn't have any butter, that I noticed, and was a little dry. Staff were friendly.

Carvery lukewarm, dry and not very nice. Left a drink on my table while i visited the toilet, when I got back someone had taken it way,asked an employee where's my drink !!!he said I will find out ... never saw him again ,very unprofessional.

Whilst the staff were very friendly and inviting. The chef was Very mean with the meat, you dont get a full slice and it is so thin! A carvery is all about the meat otherwise it would be called a vegery! Would not rush back.

A very noce clean hotel and restaurant. We stayed one night and were very pleased with our choice. Good location to visit family nearby.

Had a carvery ,meat was old and dry veg under cooked absolutely vile i couldn't eat it definitely would not recommend and we will never return.

Came for breakfast....a little disappointing. Continental breakfast...cereal and a pastry. Full breakfast was not hot and just poor. Coffee was good though!

Always a great visit food always has great taste and never had an issue with the temperature of the food always been hot. The staff engagement with everyone is always spot on

Had the carvery on Sunday 29th Sept and it was bone dry looked like it had been sat for a while X was cold and even asked for it to be microwaved .. seemed like they were more focussed on the Xmas menu not great and won’t go back , defo better places in the area .

Lovely clean hotel with attentive staff. The food and service 4 was simply due to night workers not being able to get breakfast when rising. I'd suggest, just an option of cereal/bacon roll and a coffee to be available. You'd have had another £50 out of me that week. The burger I got for breakfast was undercooked in the center. I left the centre square on a skewer and told the staff member who came to check on my dinner and he didn't seem phased a bit.

This was the first time visiting the blue jay for a carvery, the food was cold. I had to ask the staff to reheat my food in the microwave, which they did. But you dnt expect cold reheated food. Unfortunately I will not be revisiting !

Came for my birthday meal. The food was spot on was hot and tasty. The staff were all friendly and welcoming will be returning soon

The food was ok, we both had the carvery, dogs are welcome. I've never seen a menu for dogs my two loved their roast dinner.

Since the blue Jay opened, the decor and tables are looking tired. The selection of real ales has now dwindled to stock items. On busy days it is very hard to get served.

Was a excellent experience food was good service excellent no complaints what so ever

We were there to drop our daughter off to University and wanted a place to just to stay the night. Location was fantastic for our needs and the room was clean and comfortable. Good value for money and we were pleasantly surprised by the condition of the place. Having a pub and mcdonalds opposite the place was an added advantage. Overall we had good time.

The food was exactly as expected and arrived well within a reasonable time. The staff were so friendly and helpful. Love that it's dog friendly!! Seems to be lots things going on (quizs, music). We booked our works Christmas party while we were there.

Good carvery for a very reasonable price, but made all the more lovely by Tasha behind the bar. She was not only helpful, polite and quick to serve us, she also went above and beyond helping an elderly lady to carry her carvery and sort her vegetables without even being asked. Great experience, stayed in the hotel for my sons birthday. I asked for a cake or chocolates to be in the room for his arrival. However they sorted it all for me with no charge. Gift bag with sweets and a card for him.

I Stayed the weekend in the hotel here. It was an ideal location for me as it was a 20minute drive from Dusk till Dawn poker where I was playing. I stayed as a solo traveller. check in was smooth and everything else is straightforward. A nice hot shower a clean room, comfy bed and a Tv. I left something in the room when I checked out. I emailed the hotel and Wayne the assistant manager got back to me straight away and arranged for it to be sent to my home address. Great little hotel and excellent customer service I’ll be back for certain

Confusing gratuity system when paying chip &pin which resulted in us paying twice. Manager was unhelpful when trying to resolve the situation. Had to get in touch with Marstons head office to arrange a refund. Who pays a tip before you have food? System needs changing so it doesn't catch more people out. Food Average.

Came here with my husband and son for a family meal, food and service absolutely amazing, didn't have to wait long after ordering for our food to arrive, was hot and beautiful presentation, carvery was delicious couldn't fault it, meat was lovey and moist, hot vegetables and potatoes, Yorkshire pudding was huge, and the creamy potatoes were divine, would definitely come back again

Nice pub, but table was sticky, service wasn’t very good, and the staff were rude and only welcoming to what seemed to be locals/regulars

Sadly fell below standards previously experienced, We were a party of approximately 18, The vegetables for the carvery were dry, My Grandsons meal was burn't to the point where it was not edible and many had to wait an hour for their meals, Not sure if this is due to new Management but definitely there needs to be a step up over all - G.Adams

Very friendly staff and very clean

My first time going to the Blue Jay and will be going back again soon. Wheelchair access is phenomenal as tables are well spaced out, making the whole restaurant light and airy. Between the 3 of us we ordered a vegan vegetable chilli, sirloin steak and chips, and a 4oz gammon steak and chips from the lunch menu. The food was amazing. Ample tortillas with the chilli, which was just the right heat with a good number of jalapenos on. The beef steak was a perfect medium and the gammon was absolutely delicious. Marston has always known how to cater for allergies so well, and every precaution was taken in the preparation. It's also about the friendly no problem attitude when faced with weird allergies like mine that makes the experience so much nicer. Can't wait to go back.

Excellent all round ,very impressed

We returned for a follow up visit after enjoying a lovely meal earlier in the year and once again we were not disappointed. Friendly staff, prompt service and a nice meal at an affordable price in a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere. We'd return again.

Fantastic food and very professional staff, but message for Mr Marston Inns...bad move to remove the reception from the hotel and relocate to the pub. For someone disabled it's a long way to go to collect a key. Even a code box would have been better. Our key card didn't work after a long day out, and had to go inside the Blue Jay to have it reprogrammed, leaving my disabled wife on the pavement. Fortunately it was a good weather day.Someone didn't think this through?

My family and myself had an Erving meal at the blue jay we had a very delicious carvery and steaks which were very well cooked really enjoyed our visit

Nice pub, part of a chain. There was 6 of us in our group and none had complaints about food. Reasonably priced too. Service was very good, all staff seemed polite and professional.

Myself and family dropped in on the off chance for a bite to eat, we was accommodated with no problem. The staff were welcoming, smiled and made us feel welcome. It was an excellent service, food was tasty and not too expensive. We will definitely return for food again. I would highly recommend it.

Fantastic pub to go to, very welcoming place and staff. Food is delicious and staff are really friendly. Would definatly advise going here. Great place for kids too.

The pub was quiet. The bar manager seemed quite grumpy. We waited 30mins for 2 meals, which is reasonable. The steak was really overcooked and the portion sizes were extremely small. The waiter was very friendly.

Came with family for a meal out. The food was delicious and the staff were welcoming. Will be back very soon

We must have arrived at a busy time as the food took ages to come. We were warned there would be a wait but it was a bit on the ridiculous side. The food was good and the staff were doing their best to manage the situation. Luckily, my friends little boy kept himself occupied in the play area whilst we waited. I had planned to have a carvery but it all looked a bit dry and a bit uninviting.

Food was lovley staff was brilliant especially jamie, and Adam made me feel really welcome. They took time out to have a conversation made to feel really part of the experience at blue jays. Thankyou will be back and have recommend to other people.

Dinner was absolutely fantastic and my son is a very fussy eater but ate every bit of his dinner, children played on the play area while me and my partner was having nice quiet drink, meat cooked to perfection, fresh vegetables proper yorkshires, I dont normally leave reviews but this deserves one.

Great local pub, loads of space indoors and outside. Usual pub grub but also has a carvery every day. Friendly staff, good food. Plenty of parking. Large kids play area in side.

Visited today on way back from the coast, All had carvery which was so tasty. Took dessert away with us as we were stuffed. All staff happy and friendly plus very attentive. We will be back soon

I have visited the Blue Jay on a number of occasions for various events, party nights, family meals and meeting with friends. I have never been left disappointed. All the staff are really friendly and helpful, the food is great particularly the carvery. I'm really looking forward to our next visit. Thank you Danny and team

100% recommend blue jay to my friends and family the staff are always kind and welcoming and their food is always spot on and delicious and it's a great pub to take your family and children lovely atmosphere and nothing is ever to much trouble for the staff and they are always their to give you hand and give you a good experience.

Been for another great meal at the Blue Jay. Everyone was made to feel welcome including our dog who even had her own menu. The kids love the play area outside which looks amazing with the new bright colours. Look forward to next visit

Stopped in en route to see family for a bite to eat and were so very impressed - we'll be back you can count on that!! Carvery was fresh hot and delicious, not the stale re-heated mush that is sadly common these days on many carveries. The pub was clean and really well looked after and the staff were just lovely. From the bar, to carvery server and even the manager (Sorry our baby screamed at you!!) everyone was so very friendly and made us feel comfortable for our whole visit. Cant wait to pass by again, thank you!

Visited midweek lunchtime for a birthday celebration. The Blue Jay is a fairly modern, functional Marston’s pub/restaurant. It was pretty quiet. There is a nice ‘conservatory’ area, and outdoor seating areas. The service was pleasant, and the food was good. We had one vegetarian, and one meat small plate carvery, and a fish finger sandwich with chips all at a reasonable price. Even more so if you have a Derby Gold Card (note discount not applied to orders including small plate carvery)

Not sure about the rest of the food but don’t buy the carvery as the food was awful I never write review but I felt I have to about this the roast potatoes have never seen a roast and were raw potatoes the vegetables was missing the vegetables that were thier was hard and the meat was very dry also the graves was like water the best bit was the meals was the drinks I would not have a carvery from thier again

We stayed at the accommodation for 2 nights.

The boss who works there is disgusting with the way he speaks to his staff back stabbing other staff behind there backs the way he speaks to them when customers are present is horrendous would never have gone to this pub if I new it was so negative and hostile staff stare and judge you with other staff such a uncomfortable place to be in .

Visited here today. Great little play area for the little ones. Food was nice and kids dinner options were great. The floor staff went above and beyond especially Tasha and her female colleague I didn't get her name. Thank you. We will definitely be visiting again!

Nice carvery but I thought I've had better on a Sunday...plus seemed expensive

We stayed for a couple of nights so decided to dine in the pub for tea. My partner had the steak and ale pie and I opted for the carvery. The server let me know when my partners meal was nearly ready so I could head to the carvery to get some food. My excitment didn't last long though as all meats had clearly been left under the lights for too long and had become inediable, Veg and potatoes were like bullets. Thankfully my partners meal looked really nice and she really enjoyed it. Unfortunatly our breakfast expereince the following day wasn't any better. We had a sausage and bacon sandwich which was stone cold when it arrived and the bread was stale. Overall I'm glad I probably won't need to go again

Good Marsdens pub just off the ring road in Derby. Food looks good. Beer good too. Great outside areas and spacious inside. Recommended

Great food, especially the homemade coleslaw!! Nice view. Superb staff especially the manager and chef.

Food was ok. The carvery was pretty dry and the veg was not great and had a lot of hard bits. Tried a burger one night but that was not that great either. Not awful though but I was expecting better for the price. I decided to go next door to McDonald's for the next one. The blonde lady behind the bar was not engaging at all and didn't seem too happy to be there, but it could just be me.

The food was incredible, the drinks were great especially the cocktails and everything was reasonably priced. Very friendly staff and everywhere was clean, great atmosphere also.

Excellent Carvery Sunday lunch - 3 choices of meats, all lovely, and a great selection of vegetables to accompany. Particularly liked the addition of ratatouille and the potatoes/veg gratin. Attentive service also.

Visited with a bunch of friends had a great experience we had main food. Didn’t take long to come out and was delicious. All the staff were welcoming and friendly. Will be recommending to friends and family. Will be back very soon
