Decent pub Good prices Nice staff

The pub has a personal connection and so I'm a fan of the owners taking it back. The whistle has a unique history in Ashburton and is the final reminder of a once vibrant pub scene.

We arrived at 12.45 on a Saturday. To be told no food at all . Young girl was just daydreaming behind bar .(no greeting). So had one drink and went. We were actually looking for a permanent venue for a club meeting. For 20 people once a month Inc food So looks like they have shot themselves in the foot.so will go elsewhere. .

Friendly pub. Not sure if they regularly do food, but did it for us as a special!

Not been in the whistle for a few years but just recently called in for a pint and a game of pool, what a transformation 👏 brilliant decor, the people that owne it very polite. Definitely going back 👍👍👍

The Silent Whistle is a really nice pub to visit. It has just had a complete refurb and is under new management. We went in for pizza and we were not disappointed. Fresh, hot and huge. Well done to all the team.

If I could give this 0 stars I would - staff have absolutely no respect for customers and their attitude is disgusting!

Wow!! Went to the opening of the revamped pub. Family run great cosy feel and fantastic prices . Great addition to Ashburton which has been very much missed

If I could have given a nought for a rating I would have, Singularly the most unfriendly pub I have ever been in.. As I walked in the barmaid walked out for a cigarette, thought she will be back in a second, Iwrong, I waited several minutes and when the other customers just blanked me when spoken to. time to leave. I assume they must have a good local trade to survive. Everywhere else I have been in Ashburton people have been helpful and friendly so this pub is NOT in anyway indicative of the Town.

Nice atmospheric pub with good beer, locals and a pool table. Football also available on screens.

It was an ok pub, nothing special but nothing too bad besides one thing...the cost of drinks. Very expensive, 2 drinks for nearly £19. Wouldn't return for this reason.

First time I'd been here, only because the band Audius Maximus was playing. Nice locals pub and friendly and the band were great as usual.

Since the previous landlords retired, I have to admit that the pizzas are not as good, however there is a far greater range of meals available now. We have eaten there twice recently and the food is good quality pub grub. Also the staff are very friendly and helpful. We'll certainly be going back again. My only complaint is that the music/TV can be too loud forcing diners to raise their voices. It would be nice if the room which is not the bar or the pool room could be quiet.

Just passing the area and popped in for a bite and drink. We spent many of hours in this pub a few years ago when living in the area for some months. It was sad to not see the old owners but life moves on I guess and the new owners seems to being doing a great job with the food and service. I dropped a star purely because the decor could do with a bit of work. 5 stars for me means everything has to be perfect but they were very close. Good luck with the business.

Good solid lunch here and very good staff. They kindly kept the kitchen open for us for an extra few minutes. The pizza was tasty but very large and also quite thick - I wished I'd only eaten half of it, or ordered the kids' size. Recommended, just be aware that you may get a lot of food!

Best pint in Ashburton and you won't have your pants pulled down on price like some of the other pubs in the village.

New ownership, pub food looks good, service with a smile, and one good cask beer on tap.

Used to buy pizzas here quite regularly and loved their thin crust pizzas, the best around. Visited for the first time since lockdown and SO disappointed! Now they are rectangular in shape, smaller, sloppy and more expensive, definitely won’t be returning

Ok, how can I not rate this 5. You go on it as you are a train nut But it is professional run, the staff are great, the trains are on time to the minute... And great scenary.

Found this place down a side street, after looking for somewhere for lunch (most places closed!!) Good covid precautions. As it was mid week, very quiet, with only a few locals in. Ordered mini pizza with chips & salad. Wanted to change flavours, which staff was happy to do with no fuss!!! Staff friendly & helpful. Excellent fresh cooked pizza, absolutely gorgeous chips & good portion size for the money. Next time we are passing, will defo make a detour off the A38 to stop here for lunch!!! Only one issue.....maybe offer steak knife to cut through pizza base, as was lovely & crispy but bit difficult to cut through.

Stayed in Ashburton for 3 nights whilst travelling around the West country. We came here the first night and the owners were so friendly... The pizza was amazing... And the patrons (all locals) were so welcoming and fun... So we have been back every night! Tonight is either Hunters Chicken or a chicken burger! I can't wait.

The takeaway service is really efficient. The food is nice ...generous portions

Run down, poorly decorated. Really cold and no heating.. absolute pants to be honest. Wouldn't recommend. Empty pub and £4 for a cider. Not an enjoyable experience.

Brilliant food with tucked away roof terrace beer garden, looking forward to being able to sit in for a meal after having a takeaway. The food was fresh and tasty with a good portion size and excellent value.

Went to the silent whistle ashburton booked table of 6 and 4 pre ordered food 2 days ahead.. we had pizza scamp and chips cheese burger chilli and spaghetti Bolognese got to say it was all awfull would not recommend or ever visit again .. chips were soggy and landlady told us they weren't cooked yet still served

I don't often write reviews but I was surprised at the quality of the pizzas at this pub- they were excellent and all made from scratch. Really well done and thank you for a lovely evening. The owners were very and considerate.

Best take away pizza in Ashburton. Very good chips as well. I used their take away service which was very quick and the pizza was brought out hot and ready to go.

Fantastic little pub. The landlady recommended Jail Ale, the local. Great choice. Very attentive couple. Great pizzas and chilli, reasonably priced. Very covid safe.

Excellent pizza, excellent Jail Beer, common sense Covid approach

Myself my wife and our Staffie Ajax visited the Silent Whistle on 10th September 2020 for a drink and Pizza. We were given an extremely warm welcome by the propierters especially Meg, a delightful lady who made us feel at ease in a place we'd never been before, we ordered drinks and 2 pizzas and sat upstairs outside, Meg hand cook's the pizzas from scratch after you order and OMG if you like pizza then you have to visit this place, we had the meat feast and chicken both 12" and honestly could not find a single fault with either, our stay there was fantastic with the added bonus of the stunningly tasty pizzas, thank you Meg, next time we are local we will definitely come back for round 2

Wondered in here by chance, but gosh the pizzas were amazing! All homemade (even the sauce!) as well!

We visited here with our young daughters in the past, and return here as they are a great local, with the best GF pizza. Last week we called ahead to reserve a table and were asked on the phone how many in our party, I answered 4. The chap then proceeded to question if we had children, and were they over 12. Ours are not over 12 , so we were told that unless we could promise they would be perfectly behaved we could not book. This is linked to the landlord experiencing recently very poor behaviour from other guests and their children, We decided not to eat here as we felt that although our girls are so well behaved we would be constantly on edge in case they spilled a drink or dropped something on the floor. It is such a shame that this great location has been spoilt for the majority by the minority, especially as we are local and would want to support them.

Lovely pub that we visited for a few drinks whilst on holiday. Had a really warm welcome from the land lady who was really friendly and her staff were all very polite. Covid measures of a one way system were very reassuring. Reasonable prices. Didn’t eat here but saw some other people with pizzas which looked great. Lovely patio area upstairs with potted flowers.

When our poorly car struggled into Ashburton we discovered this friendly oasis. Average pub, lifted significantly by the warm welcome and the fabulous quirky roof terrace garden. Sipping cider, surrounded by beautiful flowers, we were a little disappointed when Green Flag sorted us (apparently the pizzas are legendary!) We will certainly call back to try!

Superb pizza, went with my son before a show at the ashburton arts centre. Sports pub but not rowdy, and really good value for the pizzas, thin base and really tasty, cooked perfectly.

Just enjoyed my second pizza in two days. Great find a proper handmade pizza. Absolutely delicious if you are visiting Ashburton and want to visit a friendly welcoming pub this is the place. Drinks, pizza and football I will be coming back

Good food and nice pub atmosphere

Called in for a lunch time drink, very clean, lovely decor and very welcoming Landlord, unfortunately not serving food on our visit, but would definately call again and would love to have a meal.

Can't review the pub as a pub as we didn't stay, but it was recommended to us as the place to go in Ashburton for takeaway pizza. Seemed a bit bizarre, but so glad we went with the recommendation. The lady who makes the pizzas was really friendly, welcoming and accommodating, and apparently they have an authentic Italian pizza oven in the place. The pizzas were absolutely fabulous - proper fresh Italian style thin crust pizzas with plenty of toppings. Cannot recommend this place highly enough.

We love this place! Been several times this week already and the management are lovely and friendly. The pizzas are to die for too! The burgers are good too. I'm here for 3 more weeks at the cookery school and so we will be back several times I'm sure.Really recommend.

Husband and wife team - don't be misled by the understated menu propped up in the bar, we'd can't big up the food enough, REAL proper handmade burgers, pizzas, spaghetti bol, made and served by her own fair hand, with a lovely smile and chat. Such nice people, would defo go back again.

The service was really friendly, the food was amazing! My wife told me they were known for their Pizza and man did they not disappoint! A Gluten Free option for my wife which pretty much made her day and looked and tasted like a normal pizza base! Will definately be returning soon!!! 👍

£2.70 for 1/2 a coke in a Devon country pub. Genuinely couldn’t believe it. Total disgrace. £3.80 for a pint of beer which is fine.

We were hungry after a busy Saturday and my OH has a passion for pizza, so I suggested this place. Dogs are welcome , so that's a bonus as well .We went upstairs to the small roof garden and quickly were served with a big bowl of hot n crunchy chips and a lovely 14" pizza , nice and thin as we are not deep pan fans. Add a couple of bottles of drinks , a cider and a Corona and I did get change from a £20, so we talking good value to. I'm gonna hand this bit over to my OH (pizza lover) and her response to what would you like to say about the pizza ? " Oh my god, I'd have pizza there every night , seriously yummy" So there you go , a good English pub that does rocking pizza and good prices.

Meg and Rob are so friendly and welcoming and Meg's pizzas are sublime, she is very accommodating to my food foibles! Their prices for food and drink are excellent.

Visited the Silent Whistle twice on our visit to Ashburton. The pub has recently been refurbished and looks fabulous. Well kept beer, fantastic pizzas, friendly and welcoming. The pub has a couple of TVs to watch the football and a pool table. Definitely recommend a visit lunch or night time. We had the homemade fresh pizza and they were delicious, highly recommend.

This is the place for a real pizza treat......they are exceptionally good with lots of choice. You can ring ahead and order or enjoy a drink while you are waiting in this newly refurbished pub. Very highly recommended.

Good pizza, excellent Jail Ale. This is THE place in ashburton to watch sport on TV. Also pool, darts and good conversation.

Getting lunch for 8 at 14.30 on a Sunday is a challenge and the friendly Silent Whistle husband and wife team saved the day for us. Great service, choice of meals, small children welcome, low prices great quality. Highly recommended. We'll be making the effort to return again, a hidden gem. We ate freshly made Pizza's, Burgers, and Spagetti Bolognese

Our outlaws moved down to Ashburton last October so on and off we've been coming here. Always enjoyed the atmosphere and the Jail Ale was always well kept. ( This is really important). Tonight we drove down to help with the move to Torquay. Had a shed load of beer and a really exceptional pizza gosh we're going to miss this pub

Nice pub, very friendly staff and good food.

Cannot fault this pub at all. We originally went as they were the place showing the football. We were very impressed to see that they made handmade pizza. We had a selection of the pizzas and chips to share between 6 of us and 3 large pizzas was plenty. The staff were friendly and very attentive, turning on the TV nearest to us so we could watch the football when it started. We were told that there was a little upstairs garden which we never found as it was evening but I imagine this would be lovely after a swim in the local pool.

Ashburton parece un poco tranquilo sobre los pubs que frecuentan, sino de 3 visitamos este era el más servicial y la comida era totalmente increíble. La pareja que administra hizo todo lo posible para proporcionar todo lo necesario para nuestra comida, incluyendo todo lo que necesitábamos para nuestro hijo y de 6 meses. Por una pinta relajado y grub no busques más. Ah, y no te olvides del jardín terraza.

We had a lovey dinner here, freshly baked pizzas with lovely crisp homemade bases. Not outstanding but really fair prices for homemade food. Not the greatest decor in the pub but it's not pretending to be anything else so happy overall. Friendly staff.

Meg makes THE best pizza I've ever eaten!! Most accomodating hosts, so friendly, very reasonably priced! Not one complaint!! Will definitely come again when we are in the area!

Nothing great. Lots of minor failings but in an otherwise slightly stuffy studied mannered town where the locals seem to be either rather too pleased with themselves or latter day hippies, this is a refreshingly laid back drinking venue with everyday beers, unashamed sport on the TV and a hit and miss stomach stuffing pizza menu.
