I can't remember the last time we dined out and came away totally satisfied. Today all that ended. What a fantastic meal we had here. My wife had a rump steak cooked to perfection and I went with the Thai buffet meal exclusive to Wednesdays. Both meals hugely tasty, plentiful and backed up with very friendly attentive staff. Well done Guys, homemade top quality fresh food that restored our faith in dining out👍

Passing through we had the best pub food here we have had for as long as we can remember. The quality of ingredients was evident . My husband had the Thai buffet ( Wednesday night) which could not be faulted and was freshly cooked and plentiful. I had rump steak cooked to med perfectly and with fresh delicately prepared veg. The homemade mayonnaise served on request was devine! I wish we lived locally to here. The prices are very fair considering the quality of the food and fresh ingredients. Well done to this establishment , definitely worth 5 star.

The Old Rydon Inn is a quintessential English pub with a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for anyone seeking an authentic countryside dining experience. Set in a beautifully restored building with charming, rustic decor, the pub has an immediate sense of character that makes you feel right at home. The menu offers a broad selection of traditional British dishes with a modern twist, and the quality of ingredients really shines through. The Sunday roast is particularly popular, with perfectly cooked meats and all the trimmings, and the seasonal vegetables are always fresh and full of flavor. Vegetarians and those with dietary preferences also have a great range of options, which is always appreciated. The staff at The Old Rydon Inn are incredibly friendly and attentive, always ready to offer a recommendation or a quick chat without being overbearing. The service is efficient, and even during busy times, you feel looked after. One of the highlights is the garden area, especially in warmer months. It’s a lovely spot to enjoy a meal or a drink, with a relaxed ambiance that makes it easy to spend hours there. The pub also offers a range of local ales and an impressive selection of wines, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Overall, The Old Rydon Inn is a hidden gem in Devon, ideal for a cozy meal with friends, family gatherings, or even a romantic evening out. It's no wonder it has such a loyal following among locals and visitors alike. Highly recommended!

We went for a sunday roast here and there are a few points which need addressing. Having payed £18.50 each for a mixed roast we were charged extra £3.50 for extra potatoes which is very bad as there were not enough potatoes or veg for two and never where we have been before have they charged for extra veg. The customer service from the staff needs to be also improved as no one checks how your meal was and do you require anything else.

Never heard a bad word about this place only ever good reviews so was very surprised at the poor level of service and food! We as a group of friends with children went for a Sunday lunch. We had no menus given to us, so we got up and got our own, no one then took our order for another 20 minutes! The lady taking our order looked as if she hated her job.. when the food finally arrived it was an absolute shambles to put it politely. Missing food, and hardly any of it! One dish of veg to feed four people supposedly, would feed two people at most. We had to then ask for gravy and other items that were forgotten and not offered.! By the time we actually got everything most of it was cold. The 4+ waiters/waitresses we had seemed completely oblivious to the poor service, perhaps keep one waiter per table and they might actually know what’s going on. There wasn’t anything we actually enjoyed about the food or service, luckily we had our own company to make it enjoyable. Would not recommended a Sunday roast here, if you’re hungry order two roasts per person!!

We used to be regulars and used to come on Sundays often when we lived in kingsteignton, revisited today after about 2 years. I had the mixed roast and partner had a steak. Steak was full of fat, and chips luke warm. The beef on the roast was pink (I did know it’s usually like this so asked at time of ordering if I could have it more well done due to being pregnant, was told this wasn’t possible) wasn’t a issue because it was literally full of fat and not even slices, it was shredded almost. The food tasted really bland and the gravy was like water - no flavour. For £18+ it was pretty poor, big quantity but not nice. We asked for the bill and were just left so made our way to the bar to pay. Younger staff all seemed really miserable too, no smiles, very monotone when talking. Won’t be returning again. Far better around.

Just got back from the old rydon inn ,went there for Sunday lunch .Have to say people rave about this place ,but I wasn't at all impressed. I know they were busy ,but we ordered our food at around 130 and drink orders were taken, we waited over 20 minutes for drinks and 35 mins for food ,that when it arrived was ok not great but ok. we then asked 3 times for a desert menu finally got one 45 min after main was cleared . The girl then dropped our deserts TWICE! We then waited another 40 mins for the bill and eventually went and found someone to pay . I understand the pressures of a busy lunch time service ,and I don't blame the young girls serving as I think they were doing their best .Overall mediocre food terrible service and based on this visit I won't rush back .I didn't complain at the time as I couldn't find anyone in authority to complain to and it's not fair to berate the waiting staff who were doing their best .

Steak and monkfish to follow, the onion rings, home made, steak, superb, sauce, superb, chips, excellent. The monkfish on dauphinoise, with two sorts of prawns in a salty caper butter stock sauce was divine. The deserts, also really good, not too sweet Damn good meal, really, the best in Newton Abbot by a long way. You need to go to the Rodean or Thatched Tavern to get this kind of taste!

Sorry but this was our First & Last visit to this establishment today. Early Sunday Roast lunch for Fathers Day. Very, very, disappointed. The food wasn't very hot, but the plates were. The Roast Beef was the worst I've ever seen or eaten in my life , it wasn't even slices of Beef, it was shreds, and it was very fatty it wasn't even chewable. The best thing about the whole Roast was the Roast Potatoes. Staff couldn't get rid of us quick enough due to the fact that there was others booked in after us. We didn't want a desert but we're asked straight away if we wanted our bill even though we were still drinking. No offer of Coffee just your times up despite the fact we still had 30 mins before the next guests arrived. Never again !

Lovely family run community pub. Strong food quality and beer selection. Lamb shank with red wine and chorizo reduction was very fine. There are cheaper options available locally no doubt, but I'd say you see and taste what you are paying a little extra for when your food arrives. Do you really want to save a couple of quid somewhere and not be sure? Come here. Quirky layout resulting from evolution of building may not be for everybody (and some rooms off the beaten track need some TLC). But there's a great choice of spaces. Leave a trail of breadcrumbs if you go exploring

Stopped in at the The Old Rydon Inn for a spot of lunch and boy was it an amazing place to stop. The food was just delicious, the staff truly delightfully and it's just such a gorgeous old pub. Can highly recommend trying the toad in the hole! From their website: The Old Rydon Inn is a grade II listed farmhouse which was part of Lord Cliffords Manor from the reign of Henry II up to the 18th century. The restaurant lounge and dining room are in the oldest part of the building and still have the original elm screens dating from the early 16th century. The restaurant, although a newer addition, is still over 150 years old and features a 50ft Well built in the middle ages. When entering the pub through the low front doorway you'll pass a lamp made from the old 'turn-screw' for the apple press, a press which apparently produced much of the cider consumed by the village! The Inn actually consists of a collection of different dining areas, each providing a unique and unforgettable experience. The Devonian name "Rydon" comes from the Old English "Ryge Dun" meaning "Hill of Rye".

Busy Sunday lunch service. Waited 1& a quarter hours for food. And half hour for pre- drinks. Beef far too rare (and I don't mind pink!) Visited once before and it was good. Can't imagine why it was so wrong and disappointing this time. Finally we told to depart table swiftly, as needed turnaround. Then had to square up the bill in a tight, cramped bar area which was also a main thoroughfare of the hostelry.... If service wasn't slow, we wouldn't have been at the aforementioned table...

A very generous Sunday roast, you would do well to clear the plate. We had the mixed meats which is beef, pork and turkey and very tasty it was and plenty of it. The meal came on a separate big plate of the meats, roast potatoes, stuffing, sausages and Yorkshire pudding that you serve yourself with, along with another side dish of veg and a big thermos style jug of gravy. Very impressive and good value and extremely tasty. The service is excellent especially the lady doing front of house.

It was very busy but 1 hour 15 wait for our roast seemed a long time and also the meat didn't look good at all.The pork and lamb was tasty, but the beef was Very rare and fatty and it looked like it was thrown over the top of the meat and potatoes,we don't mind rare meat but this didn't even look cooked! We stayed at The Old Rydon Inn in the attached apartment, we had an amazing stay! The downstairs is a great space in-keeping with the rest of the pub, it had a large dining table/pool table, wood fire, self serve bar, couches and TV. Upstairs had three good sized bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom, all had been updated and has everything you need for a stay. We opted for the dine in option where they served food from the pub into the apartment, the service was great and the food unbelievable, I’d highly recommend the Thai banquet on the Wednesday! Just come back from a first-time Sunday Roast at the Old Rydon Inn. Made such an impact that I decided to immediately write a review. First off, the only downside - parking at the restaurant. As it’s such a popular place, you could find somewhere to park limited. Aside from that, we had a fantastic time. Staff were so friendly and helpful, and always on hand (even during the busy Sunday lunch period). It was our first time eating there, so I didn’t know what to expect (my partner had previously looked it up and read the reviews). The Sunday Roast was absolutely amazing! So much of it (like I said, make sure you’re hungry), they deliver the main part of the meal all together on a platter. You then just help yourself. You then have a side of veg included. As I fancied something more than just beef I went for the mixed meat dish - beef, turkey and pork. Partner went with just beef. The amount of food delivered - wow - especially the beef (as we both ordered it) and gravy. Got to be so much food that we practically left another dinner after we both finished what we could. Another bonus? They allow you to take the leftovers with you if you wish. Finally, for all the food and drink you have, the prices are very reasonable. Amazing food, great staff - perfect way to spend an early Sunday afternoon.

The food was very disappointing. The huge portion mussels as a starter were delicious. The Nasi Goreng was heavy , greasy & unappetising. The So called “Keylime pie” bore no resemblance to either keylime or pie. It was inedible hard meringue with a scoop of tasteless sorbet on top, on top of cream & ginger biscuit crumb. Sweet ,sickly &unpleasant. We did not pay for the desert. We will not be returning.

Disappointed with the service and meal. I had the fish and chips and it was a complete rip off for the price. £18 and it was like a cheap meal from a take away. They advertise it as home made chips, it certainly wasn’t. Cheapest frozen chips you can buy in my opinion. Tiny piece of fish. I did complain to the staff who said they would speak to chef and come back to me…. They never did. They really didn’t care. Meals well overpriced for what they are.

I have never felt the need to write a slightly negative review but I feel for the sake of others I should. The standard of food was good but there was a measly amount of vegetables, even when we asked for some more. We were given another tiny bowl. For the price it was very poor indeed. The children had the tiniest ice cream I have ever seen, they were really disapointed and the sticky toffee pudding was inedible. I did mention this but was still charged £7 something. I hate complaining as do my family. This will not help us but it will help others. Such a let down, we will not be recommending you or returning. The waiting staff were brilliant and the venue beautiful but its just not good enough when you have so much competition.

An enjoyable meal, albeit expensive, however evening spoilt by damage to car while dining. The restaurant has a disclaimer prominently displayed, so clearly this is a regular occurrence. I contacted them repeatedly to ask if they'd caught the incidence on CCTV and they took well over a week to reply then said the cameras weren't working. I understand the disclaimer but this surely doesnt stop them helping when youve spent nearly £200!

The pub itself has a nice oldie worldy feeling, carpark is a bit small, Waitresses that served us were lovely very attentive and polite, the roast dinner is an absolute sham, there was 22 of us and we had to order using 4 table numbers but then when the food came out they didn't use table numbers and as not stated on the menu if 2 or more people order a roast it is all slapped on the same plate together and you pick out what's yours, we had a member of our family who is Muslim and ordering a meal was difficult when information on how its presented was misleading, I have heard of marbled beef but as you can see in the picture it was more just fat, the picture shows 3 types of meat and yet looks like a plate of mess and fat, unattractive and unedible, for the price to have to share off a plate with people we were not fully know too just because we had the same table number was not the best, after we made complaints we was greeted by a disgruntled chef who came upstairs with the joint in his hand to point out it was a marbled beef which he then took back to the kitchen to continue serving, I have never met such a rude unprofessional chef in all my life who clearly does not take criticism very well. The Waitresses were professional all the way through.

Disappointing visit. We had been many times and this visit was a birthday family meal out. Service was slow. Belly pork disappointing , crackling soft not crackling all and the vegetables arrived when we were nearly through the meal. Drinks prices higher than expected. A real disappointing visit

Cooler Pub und sehr nette Bezreiber*in. Leckeres Essen und wir konnten mit den WoMo über Nacht auf dem Parkplatz stehen. (Kein Service overnight.)

A Google search found us this incredible little pub. The map led us up the wrong turning but we found it. Cute place and lovely people and amazing food. The mussels were probably the best I've ever eaten! The dog was welcome whne we visited. We are going back

We stayed in the holiday accommodation last weekend and had a really lovely family break. We had 2 delicious meals (T-bone, rump steak, haddock & Chips, pizzas all lovely) 7 of us cleared their plates. The staff were really friendly and attentive nothing was too much trouble! We took our German shepherd along who was made very welcome (and enjoyed the steak!) too. We enjoyed some games of pool and had everything we needed for a family weekend away.

Just fabulous!! Service - 5 star. Roasts- 5 star. Restaurant - 5 star. 7 of us came for roasts and all had the mixed family style roast. The meat was incredible! The amount of food we got was amazing - we are all massive eaters so to not argue over the last roast or gravy was worth it alone. Super tasty that even my dad who complains everywhere couldn’t fault it. Service was the best we’ve had, so friendly and efficient. Can’t wait to return for another roast and to try what else they have to offer. Decor was also fabulous!

Great place for a Sunday roast, great quality food and portion sizes fit for a king. They even have plastic rubs for people to take the food away as the portion sizes are so generous. Staff were very friendly even under pressure of full service on a busy Sunday. If I was going to pick a negative it would be that the car park is not big enough.

Service is bright and friendly and quite attentive. Good selection of beers but not a massive selection on the menu, but what there is, is interesting. A nice touch was a free appetiser of a home made spring roll with a sweet chili dip , before our meal. Decent portions, so all in all a good meal.

We had a fantastic two nights at Bovey Castle hotel, and could have stayed longer. The staff were excellent and very helpful. We got engaged and it was absolutely the perfect place to propose.

Disappointing visit. We had received a recommendation to have a meal in this pub, but upon arrival it clearly stated that dogs were not welcome "due to food hygiene reasons". This must be one of the very few places in Devon where dogs are not allowed - not even Guide or Assistance dogs (which mine is). Sadly, we left.
