We've been in every month once or twice for a few years, but this week it was different.. not as friendly, the chips seemed to be more 'wetherspoons' and greasier than they used to be, the chicken was dry, small and sad looking and the pulled pork was in weird mince and cubes? Not to the usual standard, I'm glad when I took my family here in October this wasn't the experience we had, if it had been our first visit I expect the rugglestone would've ended up being our semi-regular instead! The only thing that was different but improved was the calamari, which had a nice crispy batter. Nice lemon oil on the side salad. We'll try it again I expect,.and hope that it was just an off night, as I'm going to miss walking straight from Hameldown to the pub, if this is the direction it's going..

Now under new management (moved in just over a week ago), but with the same Badger beer tenancy. Kind staff. Some thought that the chicken dish (not the pie) was a little 'stringy' due to the combination of microwave and oven cookery involved. Some crockery did not match the dish it was on as well. These are minor startup teething issues. However, the greatest disappointment was the absence of Dartmoor beer on tap. Surely, an Inn based right in Dartmoor should sell its eponymous beer to locals and visitors alike? But no! The brewery has refused point-blank to allow the tenants to sell this local beer, insisting that ONLY Badger beer (good quality) is available. This is unacceptable, petty, and done purely as a 'greedflation' exercise by a brewery that clearly cares not a jot about the local Dartmoor community and its visitors. Do not expect local traditions and cultures to be upheld by this brewery, which hasn't changed since the last tenants were here! For that reason alone we cannot give it 5 stars.

A wonderful warm welcome from Shane and Michael who took over the pub last weekend. We booked a table and had a lovely 2 course meal with a bottle of wine, perfect service and enjoyed the warm and cozy atmosphere of the Old inn. We stayed two nights in the car park in our motor home, spending the days exploring the area on our bikes. On the second day we enjoyed the afternoon coffee and carrot cake offer, and drinks by the log fire in the evening. Lovely pub and perfect hosts.

A very large country pub that lacked atmosphere, probably due to the time of day and lack of customers (14:30). Limited awful range of ciders. The pub was quaint in parts but was also reminiscent of a modern plastic pub. Some great literary quotes on the walls and the largest indoor fire pit I have seen in a pub. Probably the top Grockle pub in the area in summer.

What a wonderful place to stop off on the Moors. This is a very roomy pub/restaurant yet very cozy! I love the 14th century history. The food was great and the local stout, Outland, hit the spot. It made our day on the Moors perfect. Make sure to stop off afterwards to see the church, St. Pancras. I was very impressed with the farmhouse ploughman’s lunch! And the steak and ale pie was very wonderful.

This pub is amazing! We ate here after a long days hiking. The food was seriously good, exactly what we needed before heading off to the moor to wild camp. We both had a pies, and it was so tasty, and cannot recommend the chips highly enough! A couple of hours later, when the pub was technically closed, they came to our rescue when we had to leave the moor for reasons beyond our control. Fran & Harry were so lovely. From letting us in to use the internet, to putting themselves out to help us secure a taxi, we were so grateful. True heroes for two mature damsels in distress. They deserve all the custom and success in the world, for their kindness alone. Faith in human nature restored. A fabulous old pub, with seriously tasty food and wonderful staff - go there; and quickly!

The Old Inn in Widecombe is very friendly and the food was amazing. We stayed in Widecombe for a week, 7th to 14th September 2024 and visited the old Inn twice doring the week for our evening meal. The pub is lovely, the staff friendly and accomodating and the atmosphere was great. My husband had the steak pie on our first visit and it was delicious. The steak was tender and the chips excellent. It also came with steamed veg which was also excellent. Cooked to perfection. My burger was also excellent and portions are very generous. We decided there and then to visit again during our visit and did so on our final evening. We were not disappointed. This time we chose to sit in the older part of the pub which was cosier but the atmosphere was just as friendly at the main bar and the service and food was once again excellent. I would recommend The Old Inn in Widecombe if you enjoy excellent food and ale and excellent service and atmosphere

We visited on a strangely quiet sunny Saturday on the early May bank holiday weekend, expecting it to be packed out as it's always been when we decide to eat there, but it was almost empty. It did fill up a bit before we left but nothing like mid-summer. The atmosphere was lovely if you like a little quiet so you can chat and eat in peace. We picked a table and brilliantly had full table service, very quick and efficient with drinks in minutes and the main courses once ordered arrived in about 5 minutes! I had a fish and chip urge and very glad I did as it was one of the better I've had anywhere, certainly among the top 2-3 of all time. The fish was beautifully fresh and cooked spot on, batter crispy and not greasy. The chips had a little crunch on the outside but soft in the middle and not dried out, just cooked very very well. If you can get in there, difficult in summer, it's a great place for a meal or just a good drink.

My wife and myself - together with my brother - paid a return visit to the popular Old Inn at Widecombe on Dartmoor. Our last - and only previous - visit was a couple of years ago when we much enjoyed the food/service but particularly the spectacular Cockerels who are, unfortunately, no longer there. Everything else, however, was as good as ever and I really enjoyed both the Chicken Pate and the Turkey Pie of the Day. As such, I would gladly recommend this property - probably one of Dartmoor’s best - to any other visitor.

This used to be our go-to for special meals when we lived in Devon, and since we moved away it's changed hands several times. Back here for the first time in 5 years we were really pleased with our experience. We were sat in the conservatory, which was a lovely spot. The staff were all very friendly, and there was a decent amount of vegetarian choices. I went for the Mushroom Pie and the pastry was fantastic, as were the chips and steamed vegetables it came with. My hubby went for the Pizza special and declared it to be delicious. We had just enough room for dessert and were glad we did; my Cherry Pie and Cream was delicious, as was the Cheesecake my hubby had. We'll definitely be back next time we're visiting.

Really disappointed with our experience. Lovely countryside setting but unfortunately our 1st time visit was spoilt by a very rude table full of customers who had no consideration for anyone else dining. They were excessively loud for the whole hour and a half we were there, especially their children who were not told to quieten down by either the parents or staff. A few of the other tables were quite annoyed by this disturbance too. We have children in our family who have been taught to behave in public. The food wasn't great, particularly the burger which was pink (we were told that's how these types of burgers cook after we queried it). There was about an hour wait for the food so we won't be returning unfortunately.

Very disappointed in the service we received when we visited The Old Inn to celebrate a family birthday! The customer care was extremely poor, the food was ok but not as good as we have had in the past. The food came out over a period of 15mins, the first person served had eaten most of their meal by the time the last meal arrived and then we sat with dirty plates in front of us for about an hour. We then had to go and find a member of staff to order a hot drink, no offer of desert! Extremely disappointed as we have been to this pub many times in the past and never had such bad customer care! It was 9pm and the pub was very quiet, the staff and manager really couldn’t be bothered to serve us, it seemed like they just wanted us to leave so they could go home! It has put us off ever returning!

We found ourselves unexpectedly child-free for the first time in as long as we could remember so decided to pretend to be adults and go have some lunch together. We turned up on a busy Saturday lunchtime with no booking and as we walked in past all the tables with reserved signs we felt we might have misjudged it but they squeezed us in a little cosy table for two. The food was very nice. I had the pie of the day (Chicken, Leek & Bacon) and my partner had the Chicken breast with pulled pork. You need to book. This is a restaurant with a bar. It is not a pub. Six friends popped in for warmth and welcome, but we were turned away. There was plenty of room to stand at the bar to have a pint, but had to go to the other one just outside the village. The difference in welcome was significant. I booked lunch for 6 of us. Widecombe in the Moor is a good place to do a circular walk. Have ate at The Old Inn on a Sunday at least twice before. We arrived early and stood waiting for a member of staff. It was very busy. When they did arrive they were a bit stressed. Our table was not yet available. Not a problem as we bought a drink and sat in another room. What was good – The food was very in terms of portion size and variety of vegetables. We did not have to wait for long before food was served. Everything in the part of The Old Inn we used was clean. What was not so good – The toilet outside was out of order so a queue for the only available toilet facilities. One person asked if they could have 1 roast potato with their venison pie as they did not want a portion of chips. This was refused. A jug of gravy was served with the pie and chips but not with the roast dinner. Luckily for me a pie eater let me have their gravy. Overall it we had a good time, recommend the roast and most likely will return.

Had a great lunch after a rainy walk across the moor. Just what we needed. Would recommend to any weary, damp travellers!

They were full up on Sunday lunchtime, lots of happy customers but no available tables! The friendly staff found us a lovely little table by the fire, took our order and delivered it toute suite! A yummy melting pot of cheese to share, with warm and large rolls of bread and small pot of pickle! The price was the same as the last time we had purchased it

Food was good the little we had. Lovely looking place. Staff seemed grumpy and were unwelcoming. Massive shame.

This was probably the best Sunday roast we have had out or a long time. Everything was cooked to perfection, from the beef to the veg, and the service was excellent. This is a restaurant that is well organised and good.

Don’t even bother. Horrific experience. Lodge had no heating and it was -3 inside. Informed them and they were totally indifferent, we weren’t offered another room or lodge or even heaters or a hot water bottle. We slept in our clothing. Then the roof leaked so they finally moved us to another lodge only guess what…. That had no heating either. I just want to cry and go home. What an awful experience. Nothing 5 star about the place.

Disappointing visit. We had received a recommendation to have a meal in this pub, but upon arrival it clearly stated that dogs were not welcome "due to food hygiene reasons". This must be one of the very few places in Devon where dogs are not allowed - not even Guide or Assistance dogs (which mine is). Sadly, we left.

Best pub in Whitby, fabulous atmosphere, great staff, perfect pint of landlord and delicious Whitby gins. Love this place.
