Visited in a medieval atmosphere. Food and service were pleasantly impressed. Tasty and not expensive. Around ancient architecture, the tower of the Cathedral of the Moors, streets and houses. Protected territory. Recommended for diving into the past for 500-600 years.

I've been going here for years and always enjoyed it in the pub. The last few years were disappointing as they changed hands, the food went down hill so we all stopped going. I was so happy to see it has just changed hands again and couldn't wait to go again for my sisters birthday... Firstly we had one extra person, the owner got in a mood and yanked the table to open it further - some of us had drinks on the table and the children jumped. Where do I start we waited an hour and 15 mins for our food. I was so happy they did a jacket potatoes 5 ), so l ordered a jacket potatoes as I wanted to eat healthy and checked out the menu before we booked. My husband ordered a steak with a jacket potatoe. About an hour before it arrived the owner came to our table to say I can't have a jacket potato they don't do them on a Saturday as it's too busy. I went through the menu they didn't have anything I liked which was heathly, I was absolutely gutted (through trying to order the owner was very rude rolling his eyes tuting and tapping on his clipboard and extremely moody.) You couldn’t do a jacket potatoes with egg mayo 🤦‍♀️ If it wasn’t for the owner and his very poor attitude the pub would be lovely. All the other staff were lovely ☺️

I came in with a friend, after a longggg walk. We walked in and were warmly greeted. We had a lovely meal looking out the window next to a warm crackling fire in the middle of the room. We then moved next to the fire place and had desert. Really lovely atmosphere. Staff were lovely and adapted to my meal. So definitely all 5 stars. The lady who served us were really lovely and hand a good sense of humour, or many she just laughed at my rubbish jokes. 🤣

2 people serving in the bar, no table service. The short guy serving was drinking beer, whist the other guy with long hair was clueless, probably new to the job. 60 minutes wait for the food, when food came ( 2 roasts + 1 side of cauliflower , 1 kids chicken nuggets and 1 kids roast) it was a complete disaster. - burnt cauliflower - burnt Yorkshire pudding (1 missing, but couldn’t even complain as the bar was full of people waiting to be served) - vegetables tasteless (tasted like water!!) - roast potatoes were hard, as way too crispy. - to end things we even went for coffee, and guess what? Long wait and cold coffee - could we complain? Again, bar packed with people so we just wasted some more money Absolutely joke the premium price we paid for the service and quality of food. Nearly forgot to say that I had to move our plates to the table next to us as no one came around to clear it Not coming back, and do not recommend. £23 for a tasteless roast plus appealing service!!!

Vege/vegan Sunday roast £19, same price as the gammon and turkey option, but a much diminished plate of food, missing the Yorkshire puddings and parsnips that came with the meat options. We did get a handful of cold pea sprouts to fill the plate up, 4 spouts , a spoonful of boiled carrots and a spoonful of something, I don't know what. Many other pubs manage to provide a good vegetarian option without charging so much for less food. Very disappointing, especially for the high price. No effort taken. Wouldn't recommend.

Terrible service. Food average. We were told initially there was a 35 minute wait, and we sat down and ordered drinks and food. After 1hour and 40minutes waiting one of us received our food, then waited 10 minutes before the other 3 plates were brought out!! Terrible terrible service! We’ve been coming here on the 27th December for the last 8 years for my mums birthday, but after this experience we will not be coming back. No apology for the delays or anything. We've been in every month once or twice for a few years, but this week it was different.. not as friendly, the chips seemed to be more 'wetherspoons' and greasier than they used to be, the chicken was dry, small and sad looking and the pulled pork was in weird mince and cubes? Not to the usual standard, I'm glad when I took my family here in October this wasn't the experience we had, if it had been our first visit I expect the rugglestone would've ended up being our semi-regular instead! The only thing that was different but improved was the calamari, which had a nice crispy batter. Nice lemon oil on the side salad. We'll try it again I expect,.and hope that it was just an off night, as I'm going to miss walking straight from Hameldown to the pub, if this is the direction it's going..

Now under new management (moved in just over a week ago), but with the same Badger beer tenancy. Kind staff. Some thought that the chicken dish (not the pie) was a little 'stringy' due to the combination of microwave and oven cookery involved. Some crockery did not match the dish it was on as well. These are minor startup teething issues. However, the greatest disappointment was the absence of Dartmoor beer on tap. Surely, an Inn based right in Dartmoor should sell its eponymous beer to locals and visitors alike? But no! The brewery has refused point-blank to allow the tenants to sell this local beer, insisting that ONLY Badger beer (good quality) is available. This is unacceptable, petty, and done purely as a 'greedflation' exercise by a brewery that clearly cares not a jot about the local Dartmoor community and its visitors. Do not expect local traditions and cultures to be upheld by this brewery, which hasn't changed since the last tenants were here! For that reason alone we cannot give it 5 stars.

A very large country pub that lacked atmosphere, probably due to the time of day and lack of customers (14:30). Limited awful range of ciders. We both had a pies, and it was so tasty, and cannot recommend the chips highly enough! A couple of hours later, when the pub was technically closed, they came to our rescue when we had to leave the moor for reasons beyond our control. Fran & Harry were so lovely. From letting us in to use the internet, to putting themselves out to help us secure a taxi, we were so grateful. True heroes for two mature damsels in distress. They deserve all the custom and success in the world, for their kindness alone. Faith in human nature restored. The Old Inn in Widecombe is very friendly and the food was amazing. We stayed in Widecombe for a week, 7th to 14th September 2024 and visited the old Inn twice doring the week for our evening meal. The pub is lovely, the staff friendly and accomodating and the atmosphere was great. My husband had the steak pie on our first visit and it was delicious. The steak was tender and the chips excellent. It also came with steamed veg which was also excellent. Cooked to perfection. My burger was also excellent and portions are very generous. We decided there and then to visit again during our visit and did so on our final evening. We were not disappointed. This time we chose to sit in the older part of the pub which was cosier but the atmosphere was just as friendly at the main bar and the service and food was once again excellent. We visited on a strangely quiet sunny Saturday on the early May bank holiday weekend, expecting it to be packed out as it's always been when we decide to eat there, but it was almost empty. It did fill up a bit before we left but nothing like mid-summer. The atmosphere was lovely if you like a little quiet so you can chat and eat in peace. We picked a table and brilliantly had full table service, very quick and efficient with drinks in minutes and the main courses once ordered arrived in about 5 minutes! I had a fish and chip urge and very glad I did as it was one of the better I've had anywhere, certainly among the top 2-3 of all time. The fish was beautifully fresh and cooked spot on, batter crispy and not greasy. The chips had a little crunch on the outside but soft in the middle and not dried out, just cooked very very well. If you can get in there, difficult in summer, it's a great place for a meal or just a good drink.

Really disappointed with our experience. Lovely countryside setting but unfortunately our 1st time visit was spoilt by a very rude table full of customers who had no consideration for anyone else dining. They were excessively loud for the whole hour and a half we were there, especially their children who were not told to quieten down by either the parents or staff. A few of the other tables were quite annoyed by this disturbance too. We have children in our family who have been taught to behave in public. The food wasn't great, particularly the burger which was pink (we were told that's how these types of burgers cook after we queried it). There was about an hour wait for the food so we won't be returning unfortunately.

We then had to go and find a member of staff to order a hot drink, no offer of desert! Extremely disappointed as we have been to this pub many times in the past and never had such bad customer care! A wonderful, typically English pub. The food was fantastic and the drinks (cider and ale) were very good. We had pies with fresh vegetables, potatoes and great sauce. Also highly recommended as a vegetarian. Cozy, rustic atmosphere and good service. Perfect place to stop after or during a hike on Dartmoor.

The roast pork was delicious and the service was prompt considering how busy it was. Highly recommended.

Popped in for lunch after a walk on Dartmoor, we hadn’t booked and although they were busy they did manage to squeeze the four of us in. We only had paninis (which were delicious) the rest of the food going out look amazing too. Cosy pub with fires burning, dog friendly and great staff. Will certainly be back - but will remember to book next time 😉

We found ourselves unexpectedly child-free for the first time in as long as we could remember so decided to pretend to be adults and go have some lunch together. We turned up on a busy Saturday lunchtime with no booking and as we walked in past all the tables with reserved signs we felt we might have misjudged it but they squeezed us in a little cosy table for two. The food was very nice. I had the pie of the day (Chicken, Leek & Bacon) and my partner had the Chicken breast with pulled pork. I think I enjoyed mine a bit more than she did hers but we were both happy. Also happy with the warm chocolate brownie desert we shared afterwards too. Service was attentive considering how busy they were at that time. If you want a cosy lunch in a friendly gastropub-esque environment with good food then this is a safe bet. Great place to come with dogs too.

Lovely venue in a great location but I hesitate to call it a pub when it closes so early. I guess there is a reason for this but a shame to see people being turned away at 4 o’clock on a Saturday. Anyway that said the casserole was fantastic and service very good.

Disappointing visit. We had received a recommendation to have a meal in this pub, but upon arrival it clearly stated that dogs were not welcome "due to food hygiene reasons". This must be one of the very few places in Devon where dogs are not allowed - not even Guide or Assistance dogs (which mine is). Sadly, we left.

Grounds and hotel/mansion were stunning and staff friendly enough. Food at the restaurant was definately not 5 star and so disappointing, dry chewy sirloin steak at £40 was appalling, as well as the starter which was horrendous for the cost, service also very slow at restaurant. Lodges very nice though
