Siam Cottage Thai Restaurant in Chelmsford

So damn good. Will order again. The drunken noodles are just the ticket. Looking forward to trying the rest of the menu!!

I would not recommend this restaurant at all, service was poor. Food was awful the mixed starter was ribs which was like a gammon joint, Thai fish cake was like a thin fish omelette dumpling soggy, massaman curry chicken was poor quality meat like thighs considering the cost of the curry alone was £14 and I had to buy rice I’d expect good quality meat. Service charge we wanted to remove the waiter acted like he didn’t understand when he sure did he just smiled . Never going back here. How this is on trip advisor as one of the best Thai restaurants in Chelmsford is beyond me

Have been coming to this restaurant for many years and it is consistently good. The staff here are excellent and attentive. Food is always fresh and the vegetable dishes are cooked perfectly Also, ttybthevThai red wine …it really is very good and complements the food superbly

We booked a table for 7pm for three. Ordered a G&T, sparkling water and a soda and lime. Our food order was taken - two starters three mains and three different rices. Drinks- still water arrived with the G&T and no soda and lime. This was eventually corrected. Food- one starter, one main and one rice not served with the other meals. I reminded the waitress that our two main courses were almost finished and the missing food still hadn’t arrived. The waitress went to investigate and came back saying the food had gone to another table. We cancelled the missing food and my daughters shared one meal between them. We ordered desert which came without a hitch. The food we did get was very nice but the restaurant is tired and the staff didn’t seem able to cope. On another note the ladies toilet was dirty and dusty.

If you are looking for something with a good hit of flavour and heat, then head here. Every time I visit, I order more than I need because I just want to try everything. The food is always delicious.

We were seated immediately and given menus. Tea brought while we chose our dishes. Went for the express lunch (£10- something for two courses). Both chose the corn cake starter. For main courses, I had the tofu and cashew nut stir- fry and OH had a tofu sweet and sour dish. Both came with plain boiled rice. The lunch was very pleasant and it's somewhere we would visit again.

Visited the restaurant with family who love Thai food and also have food intolerances, and we noticed online that every dish on the menu had the full list of allergens listed (a huge win from the start!). When we arrived we were greeted warmly and seated. The interior of the restaurant is just beautiful and really adds to the experience. Everyone really enjoyed their food and thought the prices were very reasonable, would definitely visit again!

Good service and the Pad Thai was okay. I will visit again. The interior decoration has a very relaxing feel.

We booked this restaurant as there were 9 of us for a birthday/celebration dinner. Food was excellent as always. We all had various starters and mains and everything was delicious. Whilst we appreciate that we are still going through COVID we felt that the service was very slow and we had to keep asking for drinks. However, this would not put us off going back.

Such a shame could have been good Chicken Satay tasted and looked like it was out of a packet and wasn’t hot The salt and peer squid was cold and dry obviously cooked previously and poorly heated up (it was cold also) Returned both dishes they just threw them into an oven and served the same dishes same plates now with slightly warmer but dried out further Chap that served us could have cared less Main course was actually good and even hot but both rices were cold In summary disorganised restaurant with poor quality service and cold/dry food

Very authentic food, moved away from area some time ago but always enjoyed our food here and managed to get a table at short notice on New Year’s Eve. Great to be back, all of the food was delicious and excellent value as well. Family run, real gem of a restaurant and if you enjoy Thai food a must if in the Chelmsford area ! Will be back….

The staff were excellent, very accommodating over the phone and provided consistent and efficient service during our meal. This included, wiping the table down in between courses and providing fresh wipes after our starters without being asked to do so. Very happy with this service. The food was delicious, from the mixed starters to the mains, the portion sizes were more than enough to fill everyone’s appetite. I would recommend the weeping tiger to anyone reading this review.

Rapid service. Tables nicely spaced out. Good menu choice. Chicken “cooked in ginger” and “massaman curry” lovely. Perfect accompaniment was the colombard Thai white wine. Very reasonably priced. Also very close to other bars and pubs for a drink first

This place is my go to for Thai. I much prefer take away, as the portion size is bigger! The Panang curry is amazing! Highly recommend with sticky rice.

The Duck is amazing, always a good atmosphere and warm welcome. My girlfriend always likes eating here and she is very fussy.

So we ordered takeaway.2 rice,2 curry & 2 starters. Spare ribs were very fatty & boiled. Chicken massaman was watery,red chicken curry watery. Only good thing was it was hot. Never use this place again.

I live like 5 minutes from this place and have been meaning to try it for ages. Now that we are basically locked in our houses, we fancied not cooking and supporting local so we rang up, ordered some food and then picked it up....

Arrived for our booked table at 8.30 at 5 to 9 left the restaurant! We had sat there for 25 mins and not even been offered a drink.... Walked down the road to Thai in Baddow Road top service top food!

An absolutely amazing meal that made our valentine's evening. It had been a long time since we last ate here (we live a fair distance away) but we have vowed to make an effort to come back more regularly. Delicious, high quality food with brilliant service. Myself and my family have visited this amazing restaurant a fair few times and the food, service and ambience never disappoint. The food is great Thai cuisine, good size portions and presented on lovely plates and in lovely bowls. The only reason it’s a 4/5 rather than 5/5 is the ridiculous beer prices!! A small bottle is £4. Come on Siam offer the larger bottles please :) Recommend

Had not been to Siam Cottage for years and now this has changed its name it has also revamped it’s menu. We were very pleasantly surprised with the quality of food, quality of service, and the general experience. I asked the waiter for his recommendations and we were not disappointed. The Thai dumplings excellent starter number 13 (can’t remember the name of it) was really good to. H6 was a very flavourful prawn dish and I would recommend too. Portion sizes were good and the wine, excellent. The staff were friendly and attentive. We will definitely visit again.

You would hope it would be well organised; no drama.Well, at this restaurant, that was the case.They were ready for our group,we were seated quickly, but sithout a fuss.The last of our group (late!) was zlso treated with calm and seated without a drama.The food;I had chicken and prawn dumplings; they arrived hot and tasty. The sauce had a real bite to it, lovely.My better half had prawn and chicken toast. It was really, really good (we shared both starters), arriving quickly and hot.Onto the main course; I had special fried rice. Again, it was hot, tasty and filllingMy wife had chicken with cashew nuts and enjoyed it immensely, but, had to leave some of the rice . . . .too much.There was not one voice of descent in our group, a great meal with first class servicd.

Lovely food and good service, would highly recommend and would go back. We had mixed starters and chicken green curry, lamb massaman curry and weeping tiger all lovely and piping hot.

We have a team lunch once a month and this time we chose Siam Brasserie. We all had the two course set menu which gives you quite a few options. All very good, very tasty and well presented. Will probably be back in the future.

Intersting decor but nothing outstanding about the food. We asked if we could share dishes but were told each dish would be served individually which it was not. The starters were tasty. I was disappointed with my duck but my wife found the weepeing tiger beef very good. Did not stop for coffee or dessert as the heating was making it uncomfortably hot.

Mid-week visit, not busy, service was ok. Used to like this place but gradually been going off it since the new ownership. Prawn crackers (free in every other restaurant) are £2.50, small bottle of beer is £4. The food is ok but no better than that. The banana in the desert was very brown, not fresh at all. Final bill with 10% added was £120, expensive for what we had and as I say, it was ok. Won't be going back.

This was our second visit and we were not disappointed again: the food was delicious and varied and the service was excellent. The decor and atomosphere is lovely too. Although 10% is added on to the bill, the food is not over-priced.

Passing through Chelmsford we walked passed and thought the decor looked really inviting and traditional. The staff gave us enough time to view the menu and weren’t rushing us to order. The gentleman who served us was immaculate in his service and such a sweet character. Enjoyed the food. Would definitely come back again :)

Dined here recently with my family. It is a very nice setting, obviously popular due to the number of people dining. Everything we ate was excellent. The staff are very good as well - polite, courteous and efficient. We liked everything about the place.

Visited here while shopping in Chelmsford, I think it was the owner that served up, very friendly and chatty.

We have been visiting the Siam for many years, seen ups & recent downs. Now new management, food is on the up again. HOWEVER beware, now only serving small bottles of beer at expensive price plus a 10% service charge is automatically added to bill, a simple but effective trap that will fool some into over tipping. I do not like this policy and avoid restaurants that apply it. One never knows if that money reaches the waiters or the owners.

Food took ages to arrive and when it did, it was tasteless. NO chillis even though we asked for them. Had to ask for drinks twice. The boy there was lacklustre.

With a super Thai interior which enhanced the mood of Thai food. Not a single dish will disappoint you; you can literally walk in and randomly choose one and it will be 101/100!! No jokes, strong recommendation, had been here more than 10 times already and still not tired of it. Just amazing! Very friendly staff as well, always smile at you and very polite. Dishes are delivered super quick and price is reasonable. If your an Asian food fan, then this is the best of best, for real.

In for an early dinner, everything exceed our expectations. Polite helpful service, a wide range of options on the menu including my favorite - duck.

Short walk from Essex cricket club and we took advantage of the 2 course lunch offer at £9.95...chicken satay starter, very generous portion and excellent satay sauce, followed by Thai red beef curry which was wonderful...full flavoured and served with lovely Thai rice. Small bottles of Thai beer at £4 and a 10% service charge made it a little more expensive but still good value, lovely service too.

Not been for many years but went with two other couples, great food and reasonable price, will be returning with our children!

Not sure why we chose here to visit with friends but very glad we did. I booked a table online through the website which was very easy and was able to mention my chilli allergy. They had taken notice of this and were aware when we ordered. They made sure the dishes were clear which were which and were able to Taylor my dishes without chilli. The food was lovely and I can’t remember when I’ve eaten so much.

Visited for a friends birthday, haven't been since last year & was surprised at how busy the restaurant was, don't recall ever seeing it like that.

My wife and I recently dined here as unfortunately we had to cancel a planned Mother's day family occasion in London. Much improved since our previous visit and the staff were friendly and attentive. Food was great and all freshly cooked to order. For mains I had the scallops stir fry and my wife had the sweet and sour sea bass. We both agreed it was delicious. We will be back again soon.

Another visit to an old favourite. Lovely set menu with plenty of food. Beer isn't cheap and the massaman curry not as good as in years gone by, but still good.

I have been eating at this restaurant in Moulsham Street for many years and it has been my benchmark for Thai restaurants in North Essex for more than 15 years.On this visit the food was OK but a bit lacklustre: crabcakes did not have much of a crab flavour and were quite hard; starters all came separately rather than together, after being asked if we wanted the salad hot or mild we opted for medium and got hot - we tolerate quite a lot of heat but this was excessive; Weeping Tiger swam in a nondescript sauce though the beef was good and the dipping sauce that came with it was good and very fruity;and the massaman curry? I have eaten better curries in pubs as opposed to specialist restaurants. The service was OK given that the waiter's command of english was seriously sketchy but he was friendly. Added to all this the restaurant now imposes a 10% service charge on prices that are already high for the quality of food. So my next Thai meal will come from Witham(superb) or Halstead(refurbished under new ownership).

First visit since the change of management and very pleased. Generous well cooked portions and sweet and sour pork which can be a real let down in Thai restaurants was lovely. Mixed starters were very good as well and left full and happy.Friendly staff and it was fully booked by 8pm last Saturday so hopefully it's doing well. Not cheap but worth the money and always nice to support an independent rather than one of the numerous chains in Chelmsford.

The Siam is now under new management, still a Thai experience. The change has brought a breathe of fresh air to the menu. Very good Thai food, fairly standard to what you would expect, some specialties. Very comfortable seating, especially in the booths. Avoid the area at back which is close to the entrance to the toilet facilities.

As a taste test this was excellent. Really enjoyed the meal, lovely flavours. Nice venue and I have to say considering it was a Tuesday evening when we went (granted in December) it was really busy. Service was good and the waiter very helpful

Thai food is a favourite of ours and we had noticed this restaurant in our travels and decided to give it a try. A small, inviting, frontage but, as you walk through that front door, it is like a TARDIS from Dr Who. Not many people eating as we arrived but this soon changed as the restaurant is so busy a little later. Really lovely, authentic, Thai décor with plenty of seating. Shown to our table a young man who took our orders for drinks. After a short while an older Thai man asked about my unusual request (it happens everywhere) saying ‘vodka on ice, no mixer?’ Now came my chance of repeating my Thai from many holidays. Actually, it went down well as they became even more friendly. I will now say if you want a quick meal, forget it. We loved the fact that we weren’t rushed in any way but, to some, they would class this as slow service. To us it was perfect having a break between courses and it also proves that food is freshly cooked.

Have been a couple times before tonight either for lunch with few of us or evening meal with a group.

Came for early dinner with a party of 7. For ease we opted for the Gold set menu at £28 for 3 courses. We were asked if we wanted prawn crackers which in all restaurants of this type are complimentary but were told they would be chargeable, we therefore declined. Food was ok but not great. Our total bill with 2 bottles of wine was almost £300. I am sure there are better Thai restaurants in the area but as we had no local knowledge chose this restaurant.

After seeing Siam Brasserie on Groupon we decided to buy one and give this Thai restaurant a try.

I had been here before when it was know as the Siam Cottage but this was the first I had eaten here as the Siam Brasserie. To be honest apart from the change of name, it was pretty much as before same decor, excellent food and polite service.

Having eaten Thai food most of my life and all over Thailand, this restaurant's quality and freshness of food needs serious attention. We ordered chicken satay that was obviously a frozen stick moments before being served to us lukewarm with a cold wooden end! The Massaman curry, which is a favourite of mine, was a dreadful culinary error: the chicken consisted of lumps of second rate meat that was clearly bits of leg meat rather than proper breast cuts; the potato was not fresh but clearly re-heated from days before and the sauce virtually tasteless. The service at this restaurant for a weekday evening was indifferent and sloppy. The waiter appeared completely unconcerned that my food was not eaten but heaped to one side of my plate. When we explained the problems of the food to the waiter, his only response was that there had been no complaints so far about the food. My advice is to avoid this establishment if you want to experience Thai food at its best.

I’ve been to Thailand and this is authentic as it gets, jungle curry, green curry and spicy basil bean curds are divine! I always get takeout and the food is ready quickly without a trade off on flavour! Tofu is also cooked to perfection. Allergens are all clearly highlighted and a separate vegetarian menu with mostly vegan options!

The staff and food in this restaurant is exceptional. Everything we ordered was cooked to perfection and the staff are very warm and friendly. We used to go to this restaurant when it was Siam Cottage but has now been taken over by new owners who really know how to deliver the best service which was something that was missing before. Had a couple of average meals before; therefore have usually ruled it out. However decided to give it another go and what a difference. The food was beautifully cooked, fresh and tasty. The waiter was attentive but not over bearing. The prices are normal for Chelmsford but you get good portion size. The restaurant has a good atmosphere. The set menu is a good option, however rest of menu has good options without being to complicated. Really enjoyed our evening!

Food was cold and tasteless. They have brought main courses out but completely forgot about our starters. Service wasn't great and they just said we can have our starters after we finished these mains.

We have eaten here for a few years and every time it’s been amazing. The food here is so incredibly flavoursome and authentic I wouldn’t go anywhere else to get Thai food. It comes out piping hot and delicious, the atmosphere really is special. I’ve never been to Thailand but this restaurant has inspired me to go one day. I would highly recommend this lovely restaurant.

This was our first visit but it had been recommended to us by a friend. I was, however, concerned by some comments on here about the slow service so we were expecting a long wait. However the service was excellent - fast and the staff were friendly and polite. The food was excellent too and reasonably priced. It was very quiet at the time in the restaurant so maybe if it was busy the service would be a lot slower but we were very happy with our visit.

came on a Sunday evening as a group of 7 for a family meal out. Our reservation was for the time the restaurant opened. many of us opted for set menu options to save on having to decide what to order (great variety on the menu!). we had 'Siam Cottage' and 'Bangkok' set menus, plus some items from the regular menu. I agree that service can be a little slow (we were in the restaurant for approx 2 and a half hours) but in my opinion the service is well paced for an evening meal out... it's worth the wait! Lovely tasting curries and you can tell everything is cooked fresh. lovely interior design in the restaurant and welcoming staff.

Very nice , chose the set menus and wasn’t disappointed! Thai red curry is my favourite, nicely presented and we were a largish group, but apart from the slow start of drink orders being taken , everything was really nice , and I like to take my time savouring all the delicious foods of which there was plenty . Will go back .

this one is really hard one... visited today with my partner, this visit should be treat after long work weekend. but the night didn't exactly went how we want it .. arrived just before 8pm, the restaurant was fairy busy,,,really nice decor and clean. we wait ages to order, drink and food as well. starter come in short time, dim sum was great and squids as well, all was freshly cooked... well good start .. but ... one big but .... after we wait about hour for mains... even couple who was sited 30 min after us, had they food and already leave the restaurant and we still don't had main.. when we finally get the food was actually really nice ... we did want have nice evening but we didn't want stay here almost 3 hours what was just full of waiting ... don't speaking about missing forks and spoons. and no one really take attenuation to empty glasses .. shame can be good one but a lot to improve

As a regular at Siam I have always been impressed by the good food quality and portion sizes. I think the prices have gone up a little bit but hasn't put me off going as I much prefer the food to other Thai restaurant I have been in in Chelmsford. Brought my family here for my dads birthday as they have never had Thai food before. And they were pleasantly surprised with how much they liked it. My only thing was some of the food came out a little late, not sure if they were understaffed as the food usually comes out pretty quickly. Overall still my number one Thai in Chelmsford! Keep it up!

This once excellent Thai restaurant in Chelmsford has declined so far we will not be going back after 20 years of use.

Food was good if still warm, when you eventually got it! We booked and they knew we were going as a larger table (9), the restaurant wasn't busy either!

After going to the cinema we thought we’d have a meal out and decided to go to the Siam Cottage. We were shown to a table near the window, I was really cold despite there being a radiator (which was absolutely filthy looks like it’s never been cleaned full of dust), our drinks came fairly quickly then nothing ...... no prawn cracker, no explanation, after 45 minutes I asked if our starter was coming, it came about 5 minutes later. The main course took about another half an hour, a table of four next to us were still waiting for their food when we left. We ordered one of the set menus, I didn’t think we got everything when we were there but I was so fed up to ask, looking at the menu this morning I can see we were one dish short and one of the dishes was different to what was on the menu. It was disappointing, think we will get a takeaway next time.

1. Empty restaurant, didn’t require prior reservation

Dissapponted doesn't quite cut it. I remember coming here years ago and i don't know if it is a new management team or neglect but it has deteriorated massively.

Have visited before and had great food, last night very disappointing. Took ages to order, an hour for starters to come then another hour between starters and mains. Food was ok, but waiting so long spoiled the whole experience. Many other diners were complaining too, refusing to pay, even leaving without having got any food!! Such a shame, it’s really gone downhill.

We have visited the Siam cottage in the past and been most satisfied, however a recent visit left our party a little disappointed. The service was rather poor, our starters came up separately and two of our party had actually finished their starters before the other two starters had even arrived. The service generally was very slow, not that we were in a hurry. The Duck in my ginger duck curry was mainly fat. The pad thai was very good.

Everyone who went to Thailand will find this food absolutely shocking.
