Shrub in Cheshire West and Chester

Really tasty food and friendly customer service. One thing to consider, would be to offer dog treats considering it’s a dog friendly venue.

The ambient is great with good background music and plenty of greenery, loved that! Staff is very friendly and attentive. Plenty of food choices and food itself very tasty, big comforting flavours! The only downside was the portion of the small plates, quite small depending on which three ones you choose. Left the place hungry despite having a dessert too!

We had an amazing meal at shrub! The food was delicious and full of flavour, our favourites were the potato terrine, onion bhaji and ‘Camembert’. We also had a few cocktails and they really complemented the food. We sat outside on the terrace and it had a lovely atmosphere, very warm and cosy. Service was faultless, we were so well looked after by Tim. Thank you!

A firm favourite as a veggie! The small plates are a great choice and taste amazing. We sat on the outdoor terrace which is a relaxing and cosy vibe, especially in the evening! Great service as always, especially from Tim! :)

Shrub is delicious! Went twice in a week on our visit to Chester, Anna served us the first night and Tim the second, both lovely.

Had a burger a few days ago and came back to try more of the small plates. All very tasty and completely vegan. The soft drinks are unusual but delicious. The indoor seating is lovely, but enjoyed sitting on the heated balcony too. Great service (thanks Tim) and music.

Best vegan food I have ever had, my partner is not vegan and he agreed that this is some of the most convincing meat/cheese replacement we have ever had. The service was incredible especially Hattie who met our every need and the owner Tim who took time out of his busy evening to explain to us how the cheese alternative is made and where it is from. If you are in Chester you must go.

The Mrs and me were in Chester for the night and followed Happy Cow to SHRUB and I'm so glad we did. We live about 30 miles away but I'll be back in Chester a lot more often now. The burgers were amazin' and the hummus was really nice too. We got dead jealous of the women sat next to us, when their small plates and mezzes arrived. We'll be back SHRUB. We'll be back.

First time visiting today and the food was amazing. The staff were super friendly - Hattie and Tim were great and had some fab suggestions.

We stumbled upon Shrub not realising that it was a vegan restaurant. None of our party were vegan, although one of us was a veggie. The food was really nice and the service was good too. Lots of variety on the menu and also some good gluten free options. There was also a good mix of small plates and big plates. Some of us ordered a few small plates to share and one of us ordered a bugger - all of which were great! Would definitely recommend for anyone visiting Chester, not just vegans!

Amazing food worth every penny. The best Tapas I’ve had and a lovely atmosphere on the heated terrace despite the rain! The 2 of us chose 3 dishes each and shared everything. Nottingham needs a Shrub, I know it would be very popular here. I’ll be returning on my next visit to Chester!

Having eaten at a fair few vegan restaurants, I feel like I have a good basis for comparison and can confidently say that the burger I had at Shrub has been the best so far. Good selection of foods and drink, as well as a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Will be visiting again soon

We visited Shrub for lunch on a special occasion whilst visiting Chester. It's a nice, surprisingly roomy venue on the upper level of Eastgate, with indoor and semi-outdoor covered seating (which I'm sure would be lovely at warmer times of year). The staff were friendly and helpful, happy to discuss the menu and one got the sense they were enthusiastic about the place. We enjoyed a beer and decided to share an assortment from the varied small plates menu - BBQ Broccoli, Gochujang Tofu, Frickles, Deep Fried 'Camembert' and Onion Bhajis, with a side of fries that was more than enough for both of us. The food was delicious and flavourful, with the Tofu and Broccoli being highlights for me personally. We also had dessert afterwards - I really enjoyed the Apple Dumplings with ice cream and Biscoff crumb. I'm not vegan or even vegetarian - a confirmed and enthusiastic carnivore in fact - but found Shrub fantastic. And it was so nice to go somewhere with my wife (who's vegetarian) where she could have the pick of the whole menu. We don't live in Chester, but both agreed we would be keen to make the trip over again to eat here.

we were visiting Chester and stumbled upon Shrub completely by chance and so glad we did. We had bob our very old dog with us and we sat in the bar area which is dog friendly (and also the outside bit is too)and were made to feel very welcome by the 2 male staff members. The food was plant based, innovative and very tasty. I particularly remember the artichoke wings being a bit of a new taste sensation and also the frickles. It was all good though, delicious in fact. Food great, service great and dog friendly, try it if you're in Chester, highly recommended. Chester is lovely too and although I didn't get a picture of the food we ate in Shrub, I did get one of bob the dog striking a pose in the Roman Gardens.

We visited today for lunch and really enjoyed ourselves. The food really was wonderful, even my meat-eater husband thoroughly enjoyed it - we had tapas dishes. The staff are all really friendly and polite. Would definitely recommend and will be returning. The only negative to note is that it is accessible only by stairs. I am disabled and took them slowly (the stairs next to H Samuels are by far the best ones to use if unsteady on your feet, others are narrow and steep). The toilets inside the restaurant were up further stairs which were spiral, which I find particularly difficult, therefore I was unable to go. Luckily our hotel was only 2 minutes away so I was able to return there afterwards.

Tim was lovely, knowledgeable, patient and friendly, as were the other staff. He had no issue explaining the dishes and helping us choose.

Had a wonderful time at Shrub and the atmosphere was amazing even on a Monday night! The service was exceptional especially Tim who took the time to explain everything and gave some fab recommendations! We went to this restaurant yesterday, the food is delicious- we had 2 appetisers, 4 small plates and a side between 2 of us which was more than enough. The staff are very friendly and informative- particularly Hannah who was very helpful. The food is fresh and seasoned perfectly and very reasonably priced. We will definitely go again.

I went to Shrub and had their vegan roast, which is to die for! I would eat it every day if I could! Also I have visited a few times recently and been served by Anna every time. She is so friendly and smiley! It makes the experience so lovely :)

We had a Sunday roast today at Shrub and it was just divine. Lovely and relaxing atmosphere. Tim was great, as it was our first time visiting, he was very informative and reassuring, particularly as I am gluten intolerant as well as vegan. To have a yorkshire pudding on my gf roast was the cherry on top of the cake! Dessert was delicious as well and we could have sat on the balcony for hours and watch the world go by, particularly with the blue skies and sunshine. We will definitely be dining here again and will recommend to anyone who visits Chester to dine here too! 😀

Stumbled across this little gem in chester. We had the most delightful and delicious meal. Staff very helpful, friendly and the atmosphere was up beat and calming. We will certainly come back. If your are vegan or not, its worth a visit. Well done The Shrub!!

Wow. All I can say is wow. We were walking through chester and smelt what I can only say was delight. Looked up and seen a very present looking restaurant. So we went up. Was greated and sat down. Menus were supplied and explained how the ordering works. I ordered the patty burger and I have to say it was lovely... but to suprise when I tagged us into the venue I discovered it was vegi/vegan restaurant... I had no idea it was not a beef burger... 10 0ut 0f 10 will defo be back

I have been to shrub many times, the food and service never fail to disappoint. The tasty tapas style dishes are always mouthwatering and amazing. I was supposed to go on a first date here last Thursday and got stood up. I wanted the ground to swallow me and felt awful but the way I was treated was just so amazing. Callum who was behind the bar on the evening really made me feel at ease and comfortable to be able to sit at the bar solo and chatted away to me along with the other waitress. We came during a weekend trip from Birmingham to perform in the Cathedral, and came for lunch on Sunday after googling local vegan food, it did not disappoint. The food was absolutely delicious, I had the Kimchi burger and Szechuan fries whilst my friend enjoyed three of the small plates. It was the best food I’ve had in a long time. I would definitely come back to Chester for Shrub food alone!

Amazing food!! Great pricing, great quality of food and so many options, lovely atmosphere and fast service. Special shout-out to the waiters, especially Calum who made our night really special and enjoyable - would definitely recommend to vegetarians/vegans or anyone looking for good, wholesome food!

The finest most flavourful vegan food I have ever eaten. The service and greeting from the wonderful staff could not be matched by any restaurant in the UK. This is a truly unique staggeringly delicious experience. I drove from Macclesfield for this lunch. I cannot wait to do it again. Note to chef: You are a genius ! i brought my cousin for her 80th birthday, she is vegetarian and I read the great reviews so thought would give it a go. We had the "lamb" ragu and asked if the food was spicy and told it was not, sorry it was far too spicy for us both to eat, very hot, we asked for some sour cream to cool it down but it didn't work, I ate the meal because I was so hungry but my cousin could not manage the heat. We also had a sweet potato salad and another small plate of "meatballs" which in all honesty was much better than the main but all very small portions and quite expensive, the wine we ordered was almost £10 a small glass WOW! Not a lot of choice on the menu either. Unfortunately the toilets were also up a spiral staircase and then another staircase thru a rabbit warren so after I had used the bathroom we left and went elsewhere for a coffee and dessert and use of more accessible toilet facilities for my cousin. I was not impressed and I felt it spoilt my cousin's birthday treat. I love veggie and vegan food but I found this place nice to visit but very, very expensive for what we actually got on our plates.

We visited Shrub this weekend, not all the party were vegan but we were keen to try what looked like a great menu. Three of us shared a selection of dishes including hummus, broccoli, 'lamb' chips, frickles, gochujang tofu, onion bhaji, gyoza and bbq pumpkin. It was all really tasty, with the broccoli and tofu the stand out dishes. The restaurant was busy and had a lovely atmosphere, service was attentive but not intrusive. We'll be back!

We have been recommended Shrub for some time now. Even my food shop delivery guys notice our vegan food and have recommended this resturant highly. We finally got around to visiting and was not dissappointed. I am disabled and have sensory issues and struggle to find places to eat that hit my needs. As soon as I walked in the door the atmosphere was calm, the music wasn't too loud and there was lots of room between tables so you don't feel cramped. The staff were all super friendly and were quick to get our drinks and food to the table. The food was so good, we purposely had a small main because we wanted to leave room for dessert. The choice of sweet treats was so much more than I've seen on other menus. The creme brulee was absolutely perfect! It is one of the things I really do miss as a vegan but this definitely made me do a happy dance. We both left very happy!

Highly Recommended! The food was very tasty and the customer service was excellent. I had booked a table for 5 people with a specific time slot that we needed to arrive, eat and be finished by and the staff went above and beyond, they were so helpful and friendly. My brother was with us, he is not vegetarian / vegan, hasn't eaten vegetarian before and was unsure what to expect, he thoroughly enjoyed all the food and would definitely go again. We will be visiting again - thank you!

Wonderful vibe. Their menu has two sides, tapas, and then main plates (burgers etc). We tried 4 plates of tapas and the food was a culinary delight, amazing flavours and textures. Didn’t quite fill us up though. The burger side was more filling and value for money I feel (which we had the next day). Anna was wonderful, and friendly to chat with. Highly recommended

The definition of if-it's-fried-it-tastes-good. But eat it as long as it's warm otherwise it will bump back. Of course was also the burned pumpkin. Like truly burnt. The drinks were good (oh but it's a restaurant with awful food). And a lovely 10% charge for service makes you feel like you're on the other side of the Atlantic.

Absolutely loved it!! Had a couple of the small plates to share and they were very tasty, I would recommend the BBQ broccoli and Artichoke wigs especially <3 They also have lovely cocktails and a great ethos regarding sustainable, it is so nice to have so many tasty options! A special note to the toilets that had a very nice baby changing area( I don't have a baby but it looked like a nice private/peaceful area)

Truly extraordinary vegan food. There were four of us for lunch this Monday, so we ordered all thirteen of the small plates. Every one was intelligent, distinctive in taste, well executed, and served crisply. Only one of us is vegan. All of us will be going back soon. Superbly curated wine list, too…

Me and my partner of 3 years came yesterday for my birthday, never heard of it before, it was beautiful! I’ve been vegan about 6 years and my partner 3 she chose this place and I’m glad she did, the inside was very nice and chill including the music which was some really chill lofi beats and reggae, the food and drinks were great, really tried to go for things I hadn’t tried before for example the pumpkin tortellini, the baked Camembert, cumin ‘lamb’ fries there’s plenty more to choose from, this has become my favourite vegan restaurant and we will be coming back, thank you!

We arrived for early dinner about 5pm and it was a little quiet, but the atmosphere grew gradually over the next hour or so. The staff were delightful and very welcoming. Service was quick and efficient and the food itself well-presented and very, very tasty. Everything is plant based. ♿️Unfortunately there are no accessible toilets/washroom facilities. They are two flights of stairs up. But the explanation was that the entire restaurant is not easily accessible as it’s situated in the historic Rows, and you need to climb public steps to the restaurant to start with. As well as the interior restaurant, there is a delightful semi-external dining area at the front of the establishment overlooking the street, but under the cover. Thoroughly recommended

Easily one of the best places I’ve ever been do, and definitely the best vegan restaurant! The food was incredible and the staff were incredibly kind and hard working. Genuinely some of the best service I’ve experienced, you can tell that they really care about what they are doing and it was a pleasure to be there. Everything we ate here was heavenly, cannot recommend this restaurant enough!

I’ve been here a good few times and have meant to review it before. Firstly, the service is always warm and attentive without being imposing. Everyone is well versed on the menu and it’s lovely to see the genuine enthusiasm over the dishes the staff have tried. The ambience is lovely - lights not too bright, good music and the buzz of people genuinely enjoying themselves. A-stars all around (and don’t miss out on the beautiful cocktails) To the folk who believe you can’t be vegan and enjoy top notch food and drink, read the room that is SHRUB.

Lovely restaurant in a quaint area. The staff are so kind and helpful, even with little details like making sure my one year old daughter had a straw in her water cup. The food was lovely and served very quickly and nicely presented. And to top it all off the whole menu is vegan 🌱
