Lovely Pub, plenty of parking. In a great location. Excellent staff very friendly. The food was very good. I will defiantly visit again.

Our group has been here a few times for lunch. I’m sure none of us mind a true discretionary 10% service charge but it’s always added without asking We were somewhat annoyed that some items' prices on the printed menu were different to the price programmed into the till and the lady was a little frosty when this was pointed out. The difference was offered but in a manner that was a little demeaning. Food and drink is good but if you dine CHECK YOUR BILL AGAINST THE MENU

Great food, not the run of the mill. Service and wine list complement the food. It's really worth shouting about. Forget the chains and short order chefs. This place deserves to be full every night! Try it!

We hale my Mum's wake here after her funeral and they were lovely and welcoming and provided an excellent buffet with a brilliant vegetarian and gluten free selection of things. Really nice ambience - both old school old English pub and new very light and spaciaous conservatory

5 stars is not enough to express how much I love this venue. I have been to the Shoulder of Mutton several times for dinners or lunch and had a great experience every time (which is why I keep coming back!) The servers are always lovely and the food is top notch, all set in a lovely location which is easy to get to but feels cosy and private once you’re inside. It’s also reasonably priced, which can be hard to find in Reading. The venue is really versatile and perfect for date nights, midweek meals, big events, and everything in between. My husband and I like it here so much that we even asked them to host our wedding reception (partly because I could think of nothing better than eating their melt-in-the-mouth mutton dish on our wedding day), and if I thought the service had been good previously then they really took it to another level for the wedding! The owner/manager Wendy was incredible and met with us several times to lay out all the details and make sure everything was exactly as we wanted. In the run up, she helped our family set up all the decorations and added some gorgeous finishing touches of her own, like having flowers in the servers’ hair that matched our table decorations, that we never would have thought of ourselves. Chef Alan’s custom dishes for our wedding menu were every bit as delicious as the normal menu and every single guest loved their food, right down to the pickiest of eaters. He is as skilled in the kitchen as Wendy is in front of house. I have always heard that no matter what, something will go wrong on your wedding day and that you should not dwell on these, so I was fully prepared to make some compromises and was pleasantly surprised that I did not have to. Every member of staff worked exceptionally hard to ensure we had the best day possible, reserving a plate of canapes just for my husband and me, changing plans quickly to serve dessert in the garden instead of at the table when speeches ran over, and making sure I always had a drink to hand when I needed one! Their efforts really contributed to the most perfect day we could have imagined. I have so many good things to say about this restaurant, but I will end with this: The Shoulder of Mutton has always been one of my favourite restaurants in the area and it is even more so now. I thoroughly recommend it to everyone I know and, if you’re reading this, to you as well.

On arrival we were told to sit in the conservatory as inside they couldn’t cope with 6 people at one table where we were bombarded by wasps. We were then told that ‘the shoulder of mutton’ the pubs main was not available, also we were told that no ham was available and was being replaced with bacon. Service and food arrival was very slow though the waitress was lovely. For dessert, ordered creme brulee and once again not available. We were a group of pensioners with limited income out to celebrate the birthdays of a 83 and 79 year old. We will definitely not be going back to this establishment.

I very rarely write bad reviews. It is always better to deal with problems face to face. However, we didn't get past the booking stage. I tried to ring the pub to book a table but when there was no reply I decided to go with the second option on their website and emailed them with a booking request. Having not heard back by the next day, my husband rang and spoke to someone at the pub about our request. There was no record of our email, apparently, so the booking was then made over the phone and we thought nothing more of it. Not long after this conversation, my husband received a call from the person he perceived to be in charge. She was quite abrupt with him and said there was no email. We must have emailed a different pub of the same name. Then said' we don't like people emailing us' and that it was quite clear on their website that this was not their preferred choice. My husband made the point that that was not the case and that the onus was on them to change their wording on the website if that was how they felt. Again, the booking was confirmed and we thought nothing more of it. Today we got an email cancelling our booking due to them being busy!! Fine...but then insinuating that my husband had been very rude and had lied about the website wording. The whole attitude of the lady in charge has been most unpleasant and we would not dream of returning as customers in the future. A very strange attitude to customers! I have emailed the pub with a screenshot of their website, for their reference in the future. VERY DISAPPOINTING

Apologies for not writing our review sooner! We had the pleasure of The Shoulder of Mutton hosting our child's christening reception back in March. We had over 40 people so for quite a small venue they done absolutely fantastic, spot on with the food and general hosting. We cannot express how pleased we were. The venue itself is beautiful and a good, cosy and personal size. The gardens are beautiful. Inside is clean and welcoming. They have a new fire as you walk in which makes all the difference! Very friendly owners and staff. Food arrived all at the same time HOT and amazing buffet choice. Once we had run out of a dish, new food was bought out and it was baking hot. We also had some additional dessert treats bought out for us such as cream and strawberries on scones (I think it was). This was a beautiful touch- thank you. Food that Alan cooks is faultless and delicious. After the christening we had so many compliments from family and friends on the venue and food. The few waitresses they had working on the day to help us were absolutely spot on, could not fault at all. Helped us bring our presents to the car without us having to ask them. They handed around prosecco all the time to our guests. They also cut the cake for us and handed out to everyone. They were so friendly also- real gems to the place! Brilliant place for a reception or party especially if you want something personal like we did. Would rate you guys 10+ if we could- thank you honestly so much for a wonderful day and for accommodating us all!!

The Shoulder of Mutton was recommended to us by several people for a family gathering after a funeral and they weren’t wrong. The ‘limited’ menu offered to large groups was way more than adequate, considering we included fussy vegetarians, a vegan, and my own severe food allergy. The owners and staff were wonderful; they’d been dealing with a broken freezer and a poorly little boy but still managed to be totally accommodating with a great sense of humour, and the food was absolutely delicious - the desserts were beautiful! I can genuinely say that it provided a really nice closure to a very sad day and I’m looking forward to returning - maybe for the famous Sunday Lunch - in happier circumstances.

Unpretentious pub with charming wait staff and delicious food. As we spilt 2 dishes in sequence, they plated it out for each of us without asking. Very scary Halloween decorations too.

One of the best Sunday roasts I’ve had in years. All the food tasted home cooked. Lovely cuts of meat and vegetables that retained their texture. Staff were really friendly and service was excellent. Can’t recommend highly enough

Wendy and Alan got quite a surprise last Wednesday lunchtime when 10 of us turned up unexpected for a cooked lunch. But after their initial shock we were welcomed in and they gave us delicious home cooked food. The slow cooked marinated pork Shoulder with a delicate spicy manderin, coconut and soya sauce was absolutely delicious, cooked to perfection accompanied by perfectly crispy sautéed potatoes and ‘real’ vegetables. My pudding was Eton Mess with a delicious homemade sauce. Wow! You did us proud, and all served with a smile. We will definitely come back for more, but next time will remember to book first. Thank you both for putting up with us.

We visited here last Friday evening for the first time. Two of our party had eaten here earlier in the year. They said how good the food was, they were right. We all had a main dish and desserts. The shoulder of mutton (their name sake) was delicious. It’s so hard to get mutton in a Restaurant. The service was excellent too. We live around 15 miles away, but will visit again soon as there are so many lovely dishes on the menu we need to try. It was so snug as they had the open fire lit, this added to a lovely ambiance.

Fuimos a almorzar el domingo con amigos para el asado, habíamos oído que era el mejor en el área local. El pub tiene un hermoso jardín amurallado con un área de patio y un invernadero, por lo que hay diferentes áreas para sentarse si no quieres comer adentro. No habíamos reservado una mesa, pero la camarera dijo que esto no era un problema y nos acomodó y tomó nuestros pedidos de bebidas enseguida y fue muy amable. Pudimos ver que estaba lleno, pero no esperábamos mucho antes de pedir nuestra comida, pedimos el asado y tuve el cerdo y no me decepcionó. La comida estaba bien presentada, tenía patatas asadas adecuadas y yorkies caseros (no el tipo congelado que algunos pubs sirven) la salsa era casera y sabrosa. Es difícil encontrar un almuerzo adecuado los domingos, pero el hombro lo ofrece y, a un buen precio, el personal fue amable y comprobó que estábamos disfrutando de nuestra comida. Tuve crumble de manzana casero con crema pastelera, que fue el mejor presentado que he visto (debería tomar una foto) y sabía delicioso. Volveré para probar el resto del menú que se ve muy bien, tiene una buena variedad de platos y postres. No puedo esperar para probar algunos. Si te gusta la buena comida y disfrutar de un almuerzo de los domingos, entonces este es un pub que debes visitar, excelente.

Reservamos este pub debido a su ubicación cerca de Reading Crematorium y estuvimos muy satisfechos con nuestra elección. Landlady Wendy y su equipo hicieron un esfuerzo adicional para asegurarse de que todas las necesidades dietéticas de nuestros huéspedes fueran atendidas. Estoy muy agradecido con mi suegro y hace unas semanas visité el hombro de cordero para preguntar si podían atender nuestra gran recepción fúnebre. Nos saludó Wendy, que era muy complaciente, ella explicó que normalmente no abren los lunes, pero lo harían por nosotros. El menú de buffet era perfecto para lo que necesitábamos. Wendy y su personal fueron fantásticos de principio a fin e hicieron que la experiencia fuera muy relajante y sin estrés. Sin duda lo recomiendo y volveremos.

From the starter to the dessert this was a very good meal. Nice friendly atmosphere and a good menu. The service was rather slow, although we were a party of 12 the food had been pre ordered and the speed of service left a lot to be desired.

Had not visited for over a year but called in on the off-chance of having Sunday Lunch. No problem although they were very busy, friendly waitress found us a table took our drinks order and our food order when she brought the drinks. Excellent Roast Beef with all the usual trimmings, followed sometime later by treacle and almond tart, again excellent. The waitresses were right on the ball with good efficient friendly service. Just great that the high standard we found last time is being maintained.

Just the best ever medium-rare Ribeye steaks last night, served in a delicious, creamy whiskey and peppercorn sauce. Thank you Alan. Superb meal.

We have just returned from eating Sunday lunch. The beef was amazing and loads of it. The whole roast was excellent with good service. It does get busy so people will need to book. The roast was £12.95, which was great value. We will definitely go back again.

Fantastic Sunday roast with the family! Gorgeous food, friendly staff and the most comfortable high chair for my son, none of that standard wooden rubbish, he climbs out of within seconds. We’ll definitely be back now we’ve discovered this place.

We had Sunday dinner here today to celebrate my mother in laws birthday and the food was fantastic, brilliant service from all involved and my sticky toffee pudding was the best pudding I’ve had for a long time absolutely delicious! Will definitely be coming back.

Went here for the first time today with my Wife and Daughter for a family Sunday Roast. We had Two of the Roast Beef and One of the loin of Pork. The meat and roast potatoes were cooked perfectly and portions were generous. Everything was nice and hot and all of the veg was freshly cooked with trimmings including Yorkshire pudding (possibly home made) and stuffing. All of this was followed by delicious deserts. The service was excellent and the staff were attentive and helpful throughout. It was so good to be served by staff who seemed genuinely intent on ensuring our visit was enjoyable. I wish we lived closer so we could visit more often. We all loved it.

Popped in here for lunch as we were meeting friends and found a nice little gem. We had between us Clam Chowder, Gambas on Brucheta and small prawns. All delicious and served by a very friendly waitress. Nice local beer on tap too.

Disfrutamos mucho de nuestra visita a la hora del almuerzo al Hombro de Cordero. Nos sentamos en un jardín de invierno muy bonito con vistas a un jardín de buen tamaño. Los dos pedimos los almuerzos de Ploughman: un jamón y un queso, y ambos eran deliciosos y de muy buena relación calidad-precio. We came here for Sunday lunch, 2 adults and 2 children. The 2 girls behind the bar/serving were very polite and attentive. The roast dinners were fantastic, good portions, well presented and so tasty. Loved the leeks particularly on the vegetable dish. Children seemed welcome, an excellent menu for them but no changing facilities as far as I could see. Would definitely visit again as the food was well priced and so delicious!

We enjoyed a typical friday evening saturday in the wonderfully nice garden. Relaxed with a good beer and some amazing pub grub. Its been a while since being here but we are so pleased the excellent food and service remains in place. So much we have opted to bring our friends here in the coming week. What a pleasant surprise this was; I found this online and decided to visit for dinner on Friday. It wasn't so busy so we were seated quite quickly in the conservatory. The staff were friendly and accommodating, the food and drinks fantastic and I can't wait to go back with friends.

Unfortunately, my visit to the Shoulder of Mutton was to 'celebrate' the life of a very good friend who had passed away. The staff were very friendly, the Pub's garden and seating provided a nice experience and the buffet that was laid on, the food was very good.

Arranging a funeral is not a task relished by anyone, but where to gather after the event is made so much easier when you are in the safe and welcoming hands of the Shoulder of Mutton. A lovely traditional pub with a friendly host and hostess who have catering done to a fine art. Just the right amount and selection to satisfy any awkward guest. We couldn’t have asked for a better place the celebrate the life of my mother. When they are not offering up excellent buffets, there is a tasty lunch time menu to sample. I would certainly recommend here for any kind of gathering or party.

Really very difficult to understand how in 2018 Green King can be allowed to operate a pub like this. It is open to the public, has a disabled parking space but that’s s where it ends. There are steps into the building, not many but still not compliant with disabled access and NO accessible toilets. We were told by the very pleasant staff that “It was an old building”, that misses the point completely. If you can install a kitchen suitable for modern standards then you can supply small ramps and an accessible toilet. If you can’t then you should close as you are not fit to trade in 2018. We are sure that when you took the booking for the wake that you did not advised the bereaved spouse that she should ensure that all the mourners were fit and able.Shame on you Greene King

A lovely and homely pub/restaurant, which is on the edge of Sonning/Caversham Park Village and yet feels like you are in the heart of the country. There’s plenty of parking, a nice garden and the staff are really friendly. We had lunch, which was hot and a good portion size and all for under £22 for 2 meals with a drink. I will definitely be going back!

Visited the Shoulder of Mutton with friends for a Saturday night meal and had a wonderful experience. Excellent service and food in a relaxed environment. Lovely presentation of the food and cooked to a high standard. Good drinks range and not your usual run of the mill. Thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Six of us went here for our friends 80th birthday on Sunday for lunch. We have lived in Caversham for 40years but have never visited this pub. We had an excellent roast dinner and at a reasonable price, well presented and good service. We will most definitely be eating there again.

Tasty Sunday lunch. two had beef and two had mutton. Overall very pleased although on a minor point the food could have been a little warmer but not to complain about. Good service, good wine, good price. A pleasing experience.

Wow hot plates good portions and fine quality food. Forget about sonning Henley or reading stop and be welcomed at the pub for a fire glass of merlot and a roast dinner yum yum *£13 for the meal great value

I can't recommend this pub enough.Two of us took an old friend ,who now has walking difficulties for lunch. We received such kindness and helpfulness from the chef/ landlord and the landlady that we will be back with a larger group. The food was freshly cooked plentiful and very tasty. We had the lambs liver and the salmon cooked in cider with crayfish followed by the excellent warm treacle and almond pie with walnut iceceam.Mouthwatering delicious.Please search The Sholder of Mutton out and give it a try.

This is proper old school family run country pub. Good food without pretension and decent beer. A good place to have a family meal without having to spend a small fortune.

We were there for a private function (BBQ for about 50 people). The food was cooked to perfection. (burgers, chicken, salmon, sausages)Took a look at the 'proper' menus and they looked interesting enough for us to plan to go back one evening.The waitresses worked hard and were very efficient

Came here with my mother to enjoy a nice sunny afternoon lunch. After ordering two cheese and pickle baguettes, it took about 35 minutes to come which is a bit shocking considering it was two baguettes and it wasn't busy in there on this particular day. The baguettes honestly looked like they were thrown together. The baguettes themselves were very chewy and stale, whereas the cheese was cut into huge blocks and just stuffed in there with no care. There was about a finger nail sized portion of pickle in them too. Very tasteless and disappointing to say the least. Wouldn't visit for lunch again.

Went there for a funeral wake - food, drink and service was good. We were provided with a buffet lunch plus teas and coffees - overall it seemed a well run establishment.

Cayó en Domingo (hoy) en el camino de regreso desde un paseo, después de haber probado el (caro) pub justo arriba de la calle antes, pero nunca después de haber probado el hombro de Carnero.Nos preguntaron si habíamos reservado, que no tenía, pero nos dijeron que podíamos estar satisfechas por el amable personal del bar.Variedad riquísima de asados (5 carnes en el menú) - tuve sobresaliente y mi padre fuimos para el lomo de cerdo. El personal compramos bebidas a la mesa, un buen detalle.La comida llegó y fue una fantástica parte - no son tacaños con la carne, y fue absolutamente delicioso. Verduras era fresca, brócoli era al chiflado (buen trabajo - tan fácil pasa cuando catering para muchos) y el calabacín era delicioso.Ambos nos dijeron que era la mejor comida de asado que habíamos tenido en las edades y el precio era bueno para la calidad.Optamos por postres así (después de todo, la principal era tan bueno que hubiera sido grosero no) y la pavlova tenía era delicioso, con una bonita casa hechas merengue y mucha crema y fresas salsa.Sin duda volveremos para probar el menú 'normal', y no dudaría en recomendar el domingo asados a cualquiera!

El carnero se derretía en la boca. Era absolutamente el plato. Mi novia era el pato que dieron igualmente buenas.También había un pub encantador gato que hizo el ambiente relajado, cálido y amable.Había un partido detrás de dejar las bebidas en el conservatorio, así que era un poco ruidoso, pero el personal era amable y servicial, así que no resta en absoluto.Añadido una foto de la cayera y el motor de arranque solo tuvimos que ver la calidad de lo que me dieron :)

I wholeheartedly recommend the "Loddon" Reading golden ale at 4% volume. The cellar master here really knows his job. I attended a funeral and the reception was held here. A finger buffet was provided and it did not disappoint.

Estábamos cerca para nuestro aniversario y pasó por este pub muy atractivo para el almuerzo.Gran impresión al instante. . . . Precioso edificio. y atractivo jardín con invernadero.Nos agarramos una mesa en el soleado jardín y sándwiches, el jamón ordenados, huevos y patatas fritas patatas fritas y algunas más para compartir. Cuando la placa llegamos no nos decepcionó. Pan fresco y delicioso sándwich relleno y patatas fritas, jamón precioso bien preparado.El ale local era muy agradable y cuando la casera, Wendy, vinieron y llevaban nuestra mesa, tuvimos una agradable charla sobre nada en particular, pero lo amable.Volveremos al pasar por la aldea de nuevo.

Tratamos de pasar una buena cantidad de dinero en el hombro de Carnero hace un par de semanas, pero como no habíamos reservado un domingo mediodía nos dijeron que no podíamos pedir nada * * del menú - en el caso de las dos mesas que habíamos reservado no darían su elección. Nos rechazaron. Por suerte para nosotros, fue un pub literalmente 100 metros complaciente en la carretera que agradecidos por nuestra clientela. Adivina qué, volvimos a esa segunda otros pub hoy, y supongo que se evitará pub en el futuro. . .

Absolutely delicious food the Sunday roasts one of the best I have had. A family run pub restaurant with a warm atmosphere with an excellent menu at good value for what you are eating. Service is extremely efficient but very friendly.

Reservado para doce en el conservatorio. Selección del menú era buena y variada y precios agradable. Son conocidos por las cenas de asado. Comida llegó rápidamente y la calidad era excelente. El único inconveniente es el tamaño de la barra y con sólo una porción es lento para conseguir las bebidas. Sin embargo, la rubia estaban bien cuidadas.Será en nuestros favoritos como más y más gastro y morir.

Pub acogedor, agradable entorno modesto y personal amable. El menú ofrece una amplia variedad y era difícil tomar una decisión pero tuve langostino bruschetta y marido tenía tailandés degustación (brochetas de pollo). Tuve principal filete y mi marido tenía el hígado. No tuvimos postre ya que no teníamos habitación! ! La comida era excelente. El bistec era el mejor que he tenido en la memoria reciente. La camarera era muy servicial y encantador. No puedo encontrar ningún defecto con cualquier cosa. Perfecto. Nos solía venir aquí mucho y nos parecía olvidado pero sin duda poner esta de vuelta en la cima de nuestra lista.

My parents use this place on a regular basis and are always raving about it, they invited myself and my family to go with them for a meal. The food is fantastic and the service is top class. Mutton is the star of many of the dishes and is it tasty, I had the tagine my only complaint more chilli please not hot enough the taste was amazing but was missing that kick, maybe you could do a mild version and a super hot version for us chilli lovers. my wife had the slow cooked mutton and that was amazing too. The puddings are fantastic too. The whole party of six enjoyed their mains and puddings. Will definitely be back, Would recommend you try this place for yourself you will not be dispointed
