Shogun Teppan-Yaki in Birmingham

Very good experience. Had spring rolls and chicken wings to start. The mains were the highlight- very tasty. Some of the best beef I have ever eaten. Good menu choice. 10% service charge but no issue with that as it is advertised. I would recommend/visit again.

I really loved this place. I had looked forward to my first Teppanyaki experience and it didn’t disappoint. There’s a bit of showmanship from the chef, nothing crazy, but good fun. Come with a good attitude and don’t expect the world and you’ll have a great time. The food was really tasty. I thought the fried rice was just okay but everything else was really enjoyable. You get a bit of everything shown on the menu which in the main course comprises prawns, salmon and chicken along with the rice and some bean sprouts if you want them.

We used a Groupon deal which made this fantastic value. Eating at 4:30 in the afternoon (the last timeslot available) meant the restaurant was quiet but that suited us fine - we can get a bit rowdy!!! The showmanship from the chef was impeccable and the fixed menu was ample and tasty. Would definitely take this deal again.

On June 24th, we visited this restaurant to celebrate my wife’s 40th birthday. Initially, we were grateful that they accommodated our request to push our reservation back to 8:30 PM, even though this resulted in us being the only guests at the table. We were looking forward to a personalized and memorable dining experience. Having attended a cooking show before, I anticipated a similar interactive and engaging experience for my wife, who had never had the opportunity before. We even ordered additional scallops from the Wowcher menu to make the evening special. I made it clear to the chef that this was our first experience of this kind, hoping this would encourage him to put on an impressive show. Unfortunately, our expectations were far from met. The chef proceeded to cook all the courses of our meal within 20 minutes, displaying a noticeable lack of enthusiasm. His primary focus seemed to be on finishing the cooking and cleaning up as quickly as possible. Consequently, we found ourselves with five courses, including the extra scallops, served almost simultaneously. Although some dishes were tasty, they quickly became cold, and the rushed service left us feeling unappreciated and unwelcome. Adding to the dissatisfaction, the bill included an automatically added discretionary 10% tip. While this practice is increasingly common, it felt particularly unjustified given the poor service we received. To exacerbate matters, the tip was calculated before applying the Wowcher voucher, seemingly to maximize the gratuity amount. Furthermore, as soon as we indicated we were finished, we were promptly asked to vacate our table so it could be cleaned, adding to the overall sense of being hurried out. This experience was profoundly disappointing, especially given the significance of the occasion. I regret choosing this restaurant for such an important celebration, and I genuinely feel bad for my wife, whose special day was marred by subpar service. My advice to potential diners is to avoid this establishment. For a much better dining experience, consider the Brazilian Rodico adjacent to this restaurant, which offers superior service and ambiance. In summary, our evening at this restaurant was far from the memorable and enjoyable celebration we had hoped for. I strongly advise against dining here, particularly for special occasions.

A quiet Monday night but we were sat at the teppan with another couple. Utilising a Wowcher voucher, we were treated to a five course meal with a mixture of meat and seafood. We explained to the server that my wife was a pescatarian, whilst I didn’t eat seafood. They dealt with this without fuss and for the chicken skewer starter, they gave my wife tempura prawns, chicken noodle soup was substituted with prawn noodles soup and for the mains, my wife got extra salmon and prawns and I got extra chicken. Before the chef prepared the food, he confirmed three times that the dietary requirements didn’t involve allergen issues. This was because all the mains were prepared on the same teppan using the same utensils. All food was beautifully prepared, was very tasty and it was more than plentiful. Highly recommend.

I have been to this restaurant a few times with clients and family over the years and I decided to book for my wife's surprise birthday with her family. I paid £180 deposit, then unfortunately my mother in law was sick and therefore unable to attend which was a massive pain as we couldn't carry on to celebrate without her as my father in law had to stay with her. So we tried to postpone which they wouldn't do so I had no option to celebrate with my family of four knowing that I was being ripped off for the meal before we had already started as there was no way our bill would come to £180! Very disappointed customer service. I have told them that I will never book them again. They have lost a loyal customer and future revenue as I was going to re-book, but will rather go somewhere else.

My husband and I had booked the 5 course teppenyaki experience for 12:30 on a Saturday. When we sat down, we were given a completely different menu than was on the website with no choices for mains even though that's what had been specified. The place was mostly empty but they turned on loud club music which didn't add to the atmosphere of the place that looked like an office conference room that had been converted for this restaurant. Our starters were brought out and they were very average, if not subpar. They were brought out so slowly though, it took 45 minutes for a salad, soup, and chef's special appetizer to be brought out. In that time a group with 6 children and 2 adults came to be seated on the same teppenyaki grill as us. I'd suspected they were trying to wait for this group who seemed to have booked in at 1pm before serving us our mains and I was right because we had to wait until they had their starters before our mains were even begun to be cooked. The mains were tasteless and something I could have easily done when cooking at home. The salmon and 3 prawns were flavored with butter and overcooked garlic, the chicken was dry and seasoned with teriyaki sauce that was tasteless, the fried rice and bean sprouts tasted burned and everything was covered in seed oils and butter, giving everything just an off taste. Being here nearly two hours, we were offered any more drinks aside from the ones we had at the start. We left before dessert because the whole experience was very catered towards the children and we figured a bowl of cheap ice cream or fruit wouldn't redeem this meal for what it was. I would suggest avoiding this place if you are going for the teppenyaki. It's overall an extremely disappointing experience.

I organised a meal for 6 of us as a late Christmas get together as my daughter was travelling over Christmas. I wanted something a bit different. We had a great guy prepare our food and entertain us. The food was plentiful and cooked really nicely, all in all a good experience which I would repeat, we'd definitely recommend. Thank you

We won’t be visiting again. Extremely noisy, with unnecessary and irritating club music on in the background on top of the noise from the chefs (have seen another review saying it seems to be more about how loudly they can bang things rather than showing their skills as a chef, would agree). You couldn’t have a conversation without speaking directly into someone’s ear or shouting at them. The food was average, very salty and you do not get value for money. Minimal food for a lot of money and the quality isn’t there. Wouldn’t recommend.

What is the point of making a reservation weeks in advance for a very special family celebration and anniversary if your booking cannot be accommodated? Am pretty sure in the grand scheme of things our booking would be of little significance to the management - the place was jam-packed on a heaving Saturday night in central Birmingham. But it meant a lot to us. The young lad on the door was clearly overwhelmed and not capable of dealing with the 'awkward' situation of having no space for us. And the promise of just '10 mins' wasn't credible - there was no way anyone was finishing up in 30 minutes, let alone 10! We weren't even offered a drink and were told to move from where we were waiting to make space for other diners. No senior member of staff was interested. A terrible start to what should have been a great night out. The prospect of spending a not insignificant amount of money on a now tainted experience meant we left (but no one missed us, we're sure!)

Had a lovely meal here again. 2nd visit, both times via a Groupon voucher which is excellent value for money. The mains are cooked in front of you and the chef provides lots of entertainment. The food is really delicious and despite it being a limited menu we left feeling very satisfied. Only comment is the raw chicken and fish are brought out together on the same plate which is surely cross contamination? Anyway, we haven’t been Ill so no biggie. Problem with the bill, so please check. They had actually added the Groupon voucher on to the bill. My husband paid after not realising then they wanted bank details to transfer it back. I don’t know how this could have happened really but never mind. Took a bit of sorting and shouldn’t have happened. Despite this we would definitely recommend and return, we’ll just check the bill before paying next time!

When you want to experience something new or just have a bit entertainment fro lunch and dinner then I really rate this place. My lady and myself dined here for my birthday and we got to experience some get entertainment alongside another family too! The chef prepared made us fillet of beef and these massive prawns too that were both fantastic in quantity and taste. Besides the menu being slightly confusing into what exactly you want to order. It was lovely experience all round including the waiting staff too. You done good 👍

We really enjoyed our visit here. Great value and very friendly staff. The chef was very entertaining and did a trick for us to record. The food was delicious but make sure you don’t eat breakfast! There was so much! When they found out was my daughters birthday, they made an effort to make it special for her. Thank you so much for a fabulous experience.

we were gifted a meal at Shogun and have never really experienced a Teppan Taki restaurant, my husband is a picky eater so we felt a little reluctant to what our experience would be. we were really pleasantly surprised, firstly the staff were lovely, we had a lovely gentleman named Warren looking after us and he was brilliant along with the others. We ordered additional items and it was no bother to them, i found them really attentive. we had 5 courses and they were all so different, my toddler really enjoyed herself watching the chef cook. The food was tasty, would deffo recommend and revisit at a later date. My food for thought is that they could have a little more for vegetarians or kids, such as a bowl of noodles or chips/fries- I appreciate it is a Japanese restaurant however it can make life for parents with fussy eating kids a tad easier to enjoy the meal when they eat something they are familiar with, howeverrr this didn't hinder our experience.

Went here for a Birthday meal, notified twice via phone it was for a special birthday meal. No entertainment by the chef and was also charged £5 FOR 1 SMALL SCOOP of ice cream which was probably from Asda. Staff explained they should of been re-notified upon arrival 'as they all tend to forget' any notes via telephone. This is disgusting service for what you pay. In addition, don't believe the prices on the menu - they charge £10 extra on top of the stated menu price for lobster tail or anything they wish to ! Save your money and time - visit elsewhere !!

We’ve just had a fabulous lunch here for my step sons 21 st birthday there was 8 of us and we used the wowcher voucher . food was lovely and we were all stuffed so much food and couldn’t fault the standard , and the chef was so much fun and really made it for us great that he got the kids involved . I would highly recommend it and the wowcher voucher makes it an absolute bargain !!!!

We had a really great meal with our son and daughter in law last night. The sushi was excellent and the food we ordered was amazing! Garlic, butter, soy sauce and plumb wine made for very tasty lobster tail, scallops and king prawns. Will definitely go again. We decided we fancied the teppanyaki in the cube as usually it has a better atmosphere than the Miyako teppanyaki in the Arcadian. I understand it was January but the atmosphere was non-existent in the Shogun which was a shame. Hardly any tables at all and lots of staff just standing around.

My daughter suggested we all go to the cube to experience the Shogun Teppan-Yaki restaurant before returning to her University with her brothers. We decided to go early as it was a Friday and we found a perfect spot at the end of the carousel where the sushi plates keep revolving. There was just one other couple. The food was good and there was plenty. However we noticed that our favourite dishes did not make a regular appearance. So Squid Nigiri was a rare one, tempura prawns a few dishes at the very beginning before disappearing altogether. There is no sashimi but the occasional salad and mixed vegetables. The basic standard was a type of Californian roll with avocado and bits of fish etc The wasabi, soy sauce and picked ginger helped everything to go down well :)

Visited here on NYE. We had a group on voucher that gave us 5 courses for £29. Total bargain as the entertainment was as good as the food. We both got up when asked by our personal chef to crack open eggs and get involved. Soo much fun.

I absolutely love this restaurant. From the customer service of the staff, to the energetic atmosphere. The tappi- Yaki is a great experience and the chefs really get the diners involved. I have attend a few times, yet only the sushi bar so this was a different experience. Which I loved and will be returning.

This was our third visit to this sushi restaurant, and the worst to date.

Always make sure we pay a visit here when we visit Birmingham. All you can eat sushi and some other Japanese food on the conveyer belt for £12.50.

I had lunch here one day. Sushi was super reasonably priced but quality was similar to supermarket packs. Sadly the poor quality was confirmed by a dodgy belly for the next 2 days. Do not recommend

Glasses were dirty with someone else’s fingerprints and lips on it, had to send back with the wine I ordered; however waitstaff is not trained to take care of the customers and didn’t make any effort to take care of a customer. I have ordered tuna steak which was very very salty and fried- not at all what I had in mind or read in the menu (paid premium price without any satisfaction). The timing was bad too- the vegetables came about 10 minuets after I’ve finished eating, which was way too late as a side dish. Please be aware of this restaurant- I have been to many Birmingham restaurants and this one is probably my worst experience. Hope it helps someone to steer clear of this place.

Visited recently with my boyfriend for the teppanyaki. Very mediocre in comparison to others I have been to. No atmosphere or interaction with the chef at all. Food all tasted the same. Was not an ‘experience’ as they are meant to be. Wouldn’t go back.

The restaurant would be a good place to go if you want to celebrate with a large group. The teppanyaki table with a chef cooking in front of you is entertaining. If you are seating at another table it is too loud to enjoy a meal. The food is average (we had sushi and noodles). Both the sushi and noodles did not impress and at best it was average.

Servito sushi all you can eat a 12 sterline non male ma varietà Scarsa, giravano sempre i stessi 10/12 piatti di Cui niente si particolare. Sushi di tonno neanche l'ombra. We visited with the family and all enjoyed the whole theatre watching your food being cooked. Chef we had was friendly and interactive, which added to the whole experience. We booked this via Groupon, so not sure how the price compares with the normal booking. We have been to a teppanyaki before, but not here, so knew what to expect. We arrived and people were eating already, so that was different, as normally you would all arrive together and eat together. We had our starters and salad, which was really good, very tasty. When the chef arrived to cook, he started with the rice, this was then moved to the side of the hot plate and the chicken and salmon were cooked. The rice was put into dishes and handed out, the salmon and meat was still being cooked, so the rice was cooling. We then had a small slice of salmon, while the chicken continued to be cooked. Once this was done, we had the chicken given to us, then the chef started on the vegetables, so by the time these were cooked, the meal had nearly been eaten. It was a little strange that we didn't receive the food all at the same time. I don't know if this is the way this restaurant does it, but we felt it was very disjointed. We were also expecting the chef to be interactive with the customers, but this wasn't the case. A bit disappointing really!

Shogun Teppan-yaki, I attended an 18th birthday celebration there last night. very friendly and welcoming staff, food was fresh and vibrant nice calming atmosphere, And our chef was very professional and entertaining. Perfect for gatherings. Will definitely do it again.

We went here for dinner and were a bit disappointed by the food. Service was good but food nothing special. We paid all you csn eat sushi train buffet 13 pounds and we thought there would be something else as well than just sushi, but all we had was some shrimp tempura. Miso soup and dessert were not included. It was ok but nothing special really. A bit pricy for the quality but still ok. Would not come back though.

As much as the food is nice and they do put on a little show i wouldnt really say the set menu was worth the money. There are much better places to go that arent too far away!

My Husband and I are not particularly 'fussy' eaters, however, we certainly like good food and are more quality over quantity, so following a few cocktails at our hotel bar on Saturday night, we decided to see what we could find. We stumbled upon this restaurant, which seemed lively inside and the smells of the food alone was enough to bring us in!The chefs cook your food in front of you and are very entertaining, with everyone joining in, laughing and trying different foods, the atmosphere alone would have kept us there! The staff were very helpful and accommodating and never let my wine glass run empty, which is the smallest touch that makes all the difference for me!The food was OUT OF THIS WORLD! So tasty and cooked to perfection. We are not easily impressed with Seafood or steak, but with everything (even down to the mushrooms) cooked with such effort, it is safe to say we have found our new favorite place to eat and will be returning very soon!Recommended are the Scallops, Lobster, Prawns and Calamari!Overall, 12 out of 10 from us, cant wait to return!

Very clean and grand décor service quick and pleasant. we had set meat menu and fish. wow flavourtastic I was filled to the neck, meat over load! in a good way though. If you are hungry this is the place to be. They cook the food right in front of you and the smells are amazing. The chef is also entertainment but we were clearly about the business in hand and the chef picked up on this without been asked so some of the tricks and entertainment were not performed thankfully, wise chef, well read. they normally juggle and balance eggs, flick food in your mouth, drum and set fire to thing/flambé quite a show for all age of kids great night !

On arrival we was asked if we wanted any drinks whilst we waited for the rest of the party to come, we was then seated around the 'hot plate' where the chef would cook the food in front of us. The waitress asked what we wanted to eat and if we wanted separate bills. I looked online at the menu before coming to the restaurant so that I was sure what I wanted to order, however, we was presented with a different menu. What I ordered was tempura prawns, fried rice and garlic mushrooms. The prawns were tasteless - (cooked in the kitchen)The fried rice was okay - (cooked in front of me on the hotplate)The garlic mushrooms were okay - (cooked in front of me on the hotplate).Everyone else was merely satisfied with the food, it wasn't what we expected. Hardly any flavour at all. When I asked for sweet chilli sauce or any black bean sauce I was told there is none left, despite us arriving at 6pm on a Wednesday. Overall the experience was nice and the birthday celebration for my dad was lovely for the family but I will not be going back. Also, they wanted service charge from us ALL which we refused to pay as we was not happy.

I have eaten at Shogun Teppan Yaki a number of times and everytime they do not fail to engage and interact with their guests. Great concept of live cooking, the set meals are well worth the money and very good portion sizes and good quality ingredients. This is a great place to go if you are looking for a lively atmosphere and energy. I enjoy it everytime.

Great entertsinment to watch the cook in action. Fabulous food fom makis, nigiris and tempuras to teppan yaki and fried rice and veg. Loved it.

Delicious food with fantastic service, the four of us absolutely enjoyed this restaurant albeit a bit pricey.

This restaurant is just awesome.... Super friendly staff.... Very entertaining delivery of food, which is both fresh and tasty......I have been here before for a family event, but today, my team and I, 15 of us, descended upon the restaurant to conclude a team building day and what a fantastic end to our day.. Interaction with the cooking, super efficient service, laughs a minute and food to die for.... A huge range on the menu and very attentive chefs. For us they had to cater for both vegetarian, shell fish orders and a shell fish allergy, all in one group, this was done admirably and safely ..... Personally I would recommend the Teriyaki menu.... and although you may feel completely full....do not miss the ice cream it is as tasty as the rest..... stomachs stretched from laughing and eating .... They know how to Shogun you a great time....sorry I just had too ;-)

We decided to book here as we had enjoyed this style of restaurant whilst on holiday. There were 9 of us and booked early evening on a Sunday. We opted for the set menu as it sounded as though it gave you a taste of all food types to suit everybody. The price is £32.00, obviously not including drinks. The starters are simply brought out to you...a bowl of salad covered in mayonnaise and 3 pieces of chicken and half yes half a spring roll.Then the "chef" starts to cook up the rice and meats and fish. You have a small bowl of rice with 5/6 small chunks of chicken the same in beef and one may be if some of you don't like prawns two of these and a slither of salmon.The desert is ice cream or fruit salad or fruit salad and ice cream.Overall this is not a value for money experience and the food is very average as mentioned in some other truthful reviews.....would i go back definately not !! There are far better restaurants in the mailbox to chose from.

The showmanship is part of the experience and made what is an average meal, very enjoyable. The food though is only average.

our first visit. food was fantastic. atmosphere was brilliant. we had the set menu and couldn't of asked for more. we ate for at the tapanyaki table where food is cooked fresh in front of you. beer is nice. will go again.

I've been here 3 times now and the food & atmosphere is great!!! The reason for the shocking score is because of the service. Unfortunately one woman who I've had bad experiences with multiple times has completely spoilt our experience. The first problem is all 3 times we've been they've added an extra bottle of prosecco onto the bill, which isn't a problem & when we pointed it out it was swiftly removed but I don't think this is a coincidence! Secondly on our last trip here with a large group of friends we had all had one of the set menus and various drinks so our bill was fairly large. It came to £47 so we all added £3 on top of that to round it upto £50 each including a service tip. After paying a woman waitress came over to us and accused us of not paying in full, when we questioned this she proceeded to tell us we had not paid 10% service charge. We explained that we had just rounded up our amounts & were only a small amount off the DISCRETIONARY service amount. She was incredibly rude and told us the chef had cooked & entertained us all night and there was no reason why we shouldn't tip in full. We were all so shocked she then huffed and said 'come on' and banged on her fingers on the bill. When we politely declined paying the extra few pounds she made a big scene and walked off. This completely ruined our night and this woman should go on a customer service course.Disgraceful and such a shame seeing as everyone else & the food was lovely. P.S I've never written a negative review but felt like this needed to be done

Went for daughters birthday and everyone had a great evening. The interaction with the chef was great and kids loved going up to the hot plate to take part. The chef even spelt my daughters name in stir fried vegetables. Great family fun and great food. Will definitely go back.

Excellent restaurant! The atmosphere, the food, the service is exceptional! I would like to praise my waitress Billy Sadie! She was absolutely amazing and made the evening very enjoyable

Really good fun night out with good food. The chef was amusing and quite silly which added to atmosphere. Didn't feel in a rush but good attentive service.The restaurant moved to the Cube five years ago apparently but luckily called and checked exactly where it was beforehand. Will definitely go again soon.

Came for a 50th birthday party and sat on the large square Teppan-Yaki table with two personal chefs. The food and hospitality was outstanding and the atmosphere was one of the best I've experienced in a restaurant. Very enjoyable evening, would definitely return. What a great venue for a large party.

Fuimos luego de un largo día de trabajo, y buscabamos un lugar relativamente tranquilo. No fue así había tanto ruido que no hubiera dado esta calificación ya queuegp de quejarme y decir que me iba otro lado, vino el encargado o dueño y busco como hacernos la velada más agradable. El ruido no termino pero nos reubicaron en la mitad de la comidad y lo nos conformó. Volvería a ir,a comida es buena.

Went here last night for the first time wasn't really sure what to expect but it definitely was a pleasant surprise. The theatre of the chef cooking in front of you is good fun, he gets you involved which we enjoyed. The food is really good very tasty. I will definitely be going back here

family and friends outing 14 of us, the experience of them cooking the food in front of you is very entertaining and actually made me dribble as i wanted the food now now now nom nom. The chefs are very experienced and let you have a go at cooking, he also sang songs, very bubbly, enthusiastic, over all a great time. The atmosphere was very lively. I must say when ordering your food in big groups, remind yourself of what you ordered as they gave us one extra meal when we only asked for one, we thought it was all part of the one meal but it was not, also gave us another persons scallops as scallops were also on another meal but never gave the other person there scallops confusing i know, but that's all the criticism i have for them, i would visit again maybe just the two of us next time :)

There is something fascination about a chef cooking fresh food in front of you - the whole concept is entertaining and the food is excellent.The set menus provide variety and a well balanced meal...large portions.Decor is fantastic, great atmosphere, around the restaurant there were three birthday parties when we last visited.Wonderful service with a smile and for our youngest they suggested there would be enough food from the adult meals...they were right. It is a bit on the pricy side...but well worth it for special occasions.

I really enjoyed the food here and it's fun to watch it being prepared in front of you, however I would have to say that for the price, I was expecting something a bit more special. There are better Japanese restaurants in Birmingham where the meal is half the price of this place, so although I had a great experience I won't be rushing back any time soon.

Easy to book. Staff were great on the telephone when I was explaining that our visit was a special occasion. I needed to smuggle a cake in and arrange for them to bring it out after the meal which they did aplomb whilst singing Happy Birthday. The bar and waiting staff were polite and explained what wines would be suitable to accompany the meal and they patiently explained the various menu options. The chef cooking our meal at the table was very entertaining, involving those who made eye contact to joining in a few games. Everyone on the table seemed to be having a fantastic time. It was a real pleasure to watch the skilled chefs at work Games at the table may be deemed as low brow. However, this was done on only 2 occasions throughout the meal and was not intrusive. You sit at the chefs table with other people if your group is not big enough. There is however plenty of room between all groups. Just make sure that you remember what you ordered as the chef will call out the dish or hand it to you and after a few classes you need to remember what you ordered. However, the waiting staff are always on hand to help. Overall a brilliant experience with great food and staff.
