Shivalli in Leicester

We repeatedly asked the waiter offense between Thalis as no dishes are mentioned in menu except the thali name, he kept saying maharaja thali is sort of surprised dishes by chef and it was truely a surprise. First dal soup & masala pappad came which was good, next they served vada & kichdi, Vada was not cooked inside. Bajji & masala vada was served next (one of worst masala vada & oil smell was too strong) and finally thali came with paper dosa (definitely not recommended), rasam, sambhar, dhal including raitha was sweet. They didn’t give curd/yogurt that’s part of thali in Karnataka. There is nothing about Udupi/Karnataka in that place. I had visited way back in 2018, it was really good. Staff are unfriendly & very robotic, they added service tax on top of £19.50/meal. Not worth it. I wouldn’t visit again.

Absolutely wonderful. Beautiful setting, kind staff, great service, and food that had been made with love. We had a great time and will definitely recommend your restaurant to family and friends. We loved the rava masala dosa, and the pineapple dessert! We look forward to coming back.

We absolutely love this place. It’s a small Family run business and their food always taste so fresh. They also cater for Satwick ( no onion or garlic ).

Avoid eating North Indian food here. South Indian food is very tasty.

I had the best Indian food here, specifically the Madyana Thali. Every dish in the thali was packed with authentic flavors and perfectly balanced spices. I've now become a regular at this restaurant, and the service is consistently impeccable. The staff is friendly, attentive, and always make you feel at home. If you're looking for top-notch Indian cuisine with excellent service, this is the place to go! Highly recommend!💛💛

We had dinner at Udupi Shivalli whilst staying in Leicester for a conference. The staff were very welcoming and offered guidance on the dishes we hadn’t tried before. There were lots of options so we had a selection to share and it was delicious. If we’re in the city again, we’ll definitely return. Thank you for a lovely evening!

For an Indian this is confusing..a coastal Karnataka name with Tamil names on menu and Tamil overtones in taste too. But good place, good food. The curry quantity is minimal. Spice levels are low.Poori was outstanding . A typical thali would have more rice and of course curds. The masala dosa in the middle of the serving was a blooper. Too big, undercooked and bland. Great if you are aching for that Thali..

Simply superb food and service. The thalli is amazing value as are the pani puri and dosa. Best tasting South Indian food we have tasted in Leicester and such great value for money.

We went for family dinner (5 of us), it wasn't very busy but south Indian food items were delicious (real authentic test), service was good and reasonably priced. I would surely revisit and recommend for south Indian food, we did not try others so can't comment.

What a fantastic place for all vegetarians! Every single item on the Udupi thali and maharaja thali were superb - particularly loved the gulab jamun and the gobi manchurian. Not to be missed if you crave for authentic Bangalore/Udupi/Karnataka cuisine.

Whilst visiting one of our friends in Leicester, he kindly ordered home delivery of Idli, Vada, Sambar, Chutney and Bisibebath(Sambar Saada). We as a group of 6 friends were blown away by the heavenly food which we think was cooked with good quality ingredients and tons of love and passion. Thank you Shivalli team. Heaven in Leicester for South Indian Cuisine - all Vegetarian and can easily be made Vegan by skipping Ghee and paneer. 👌🏾Excellent ambience, amazing smell of Indian temples as we entered at 6pm as their first customers for the evening ✨ Served by Nishitha and also got to speak to Sabitha the owner. Excellent choices & proportions - I usually get a thali so there's more choice of different tastes. Encouraged my friends to try it & they loved it! Extremely rude and disgraceful service by the owner Sabita. We called in order to make a party booking and her attitude was disgusting. She has no manners and lacks professionalism. Please learn how to talk to customers if you want to operate a restaurant instead of putting the phone down abruptly. I would suggest you avoid this restaurant. There are many other restaurants in Leicester who know how to provide decent service.

Nice and quiet. Idly sambar has my heart! Must try mango lassi, Gobi Manchurian Ambience is all south Indian.

Really good value for money. Loads of vegan options, extensive menu which is all labelled for allergens/dietary requirements. Friendly and attentive staff too. Tasty South Indian food :) There is a service charge which was my only dislike.

Love the fact that it is all vegetarian restaurant ❤️ Which means 100s of options to choose. Their expertise is in South Indian cuisine so better stick to it. We had mysore masala dosa and idly sambhar which was just delicious. We ordered chole bhature. Bhature was really soft however chole was okay. Badam halwa for dessert was just yum 🤤. I loved their interior and atmosphere all bright and colourful. Service was quick and spot on. Note that They don’t serve alcohol.

I really liked the ambience of the restaurant. I went there with my husband and kid. As soon as we entered, it felt very welcoming and beautiful. We wanted Jain food and they had a few jain options on the menu but we wanted pure jain. We ordered Idli-wada with sambhar and sada dosa with sambhar but they couldn't provide jain sambhar instead provided rasam which was pure jain which was also fine and went with Idli and dosa. We also ordered tomato utthapam, everything was tasty and we liked the food. I would definitely recommend this.

Dont do uber eats ordered 30£ mysore dosa nothing looked liked mysore masala dosavery basic small quantity and sambhar portion too small. Very disappointed 30£ waste. 4 dosa had one small container of sambhar not good had to cook again at home for family.

The food was good not expensive, service pretty good. My one criticism would be that the menu I'd hard to understand if you're so regular eating South Indian food How many no South Asian people know what Vada or Sambar or Mogo or Idly are? I'm farelly well-travelled and i've eaten some of these South Indian Specialities before but i only knew what half the menu was my colleagues understood less than a quarter and asking the waiter about every dish on the menu became a chore for him and us. Just a little explanation on the men would be nice. I thought it would be a place where a lot of South Asians go to eat like Bobby's or Mirchi, becausevthe food is very Authentic but the only Indians in there were the staff and it wasn't very busy, so I think they would benefit from I little rethink on the menu.

Tasty food, wonderful hospitality, caring and food serving done according to your needs. Overall a divine place to have our wonderful time.

The food was nice but be aware there is no alcohol being served as of March 2024, something that you’re only made aware of after you’ve ordered your food due to some vague licensing issue. Also unable to bring your own alcohol. All in all I’d recommend for vegetarians and vegans as there’s many options but don’t expect to have a drink with your food.

Came here last week and was greeted by the lovely Santosh who assisted us ( my family of 4). I had a masala dosa along with a soup and mango lassi. The food tasted nice and fresh and was lovely service. Would recommend to anyone who’s thinking of going

Exact, authentic, south Indian vegetarian food. Excellent menu, taste..

I've been to this place personally and I was missing some Indian taste(especially south touch). I had idli, medu wada and their special dishes and it's amazing, I felt like mom's taste in it. Definitely recommend, if you are near by then it's worth visit place.

We popped in for lunch. The decor is quite nice and traditional. The staff are friendly and helpful. The food is freshly made, vegetarian and tasted really good. A nice personal touch is the way the lady from the kitchen comes out to check if everything is ok. Overall the place has a very relaxed atmosphere and the prices are reasonable too. I'd definitely recommend a visit.

Friendly atmosphere, the way food are served you will feel like at home. On our Marriage Anniversary they made it special with surprise dessert platter at the end after nice delicious food. Highly recommend

Authentic taste and amazing service.

I’ve eaten here a few times and it has always been excellent. I’ve always ordered the thali and each time it is delicious. It has varied between visits but this is perfect and it always nice to have a variety of dishes. The food is top notch and so tasty. Service is very friendly too. Fantastic value for money and will always be a firm favourite.

Booked here for a diwali meal 2022 and wish i hadn't visited this place. Staff clueless and kids food was served 60 mins after adults food, despite asking for kids food to be served first. Food was poor quality as well and when I complained the staff said they were under staffed and apologised. Just as we were leaving the owner turned up so i wanted to provide feedback on our experience. He was not bothered by my feedback, he simply came to check the cash register take some cash out and leave. Thanks for the response, I didn't lie. I said we visited for diwali meal not on diwali day. Glad that this was the only thing you could argue with as you probably remember me giving you feedback whilst you were counting your cash, and walking out with it. I don't remember you logging the money in a balance book. Does hmrc know how you operate? Avoid this place at all cost!

100% recommend this restaurant....warm and friendly, great atmosphere, amazingly fresh tasty food, great value and very helpful staff if you are not sure of something on the menu. Great job on the bike restoration, by the way.....We will be back!!!!

No.1 South Indian Food in Leicester in my honest opinion! I've tried the rest. The lady owner is very charismatic, personal and the food is superb. She accommodates really well for our dietary requirements too.

After long 8 years, since I left Bangalore, got the real tasty Gobi manchurian. Staffs are stunning.

I gave a take away order for fried rice and veg biryani.. both of the items lacked Ingredients. Vegetables are missing in both of them. Biriyani has peas and corn but cauliflower is missing. Fried rice was utmostly disappointed with missing ingredients and Portion of veg fried rice was less as well. Taste was good but quantity and veggies are missing. The photos used for publicity of an item doesn't match with order delivered.. disappointed guys. My previous experience was good but am not sure why my second order was so horribly provided. needs consistency and improvement in orders.

We ordered the ordinary thali which came with so many items than I've seen in other restaurants. I've been eating here for over 6 years and the food is still the best South Indian I've had in the UK. Highly recommend all of the dosa, and dessert has to be the jaggery dosa! 10/10

We ate here to celebrate my wife's birthday with friends. This restaurant is brilliant in every respect. It is so friendly and the food is superb. Excellent value for money too! We will definitely be coming back when we are in Leicester.

The food was delicious. Good value for money and really well labelled as vegan/jain/vegetarian/allergens. We got a platter and were able to make it vegan, and the restaurant were very nice to ensure everything was vegan It would be nice if there were more vegan chapati/naan options Definitely planning on returning soon

We been there twice , food is awesome but both the times service was not at all good. We ordered vada sambhar ,Medhu vada , veg biriyani and all tastes really good like authentic one’s. Must try ginger panaka it’s the best I had so far!! Service wise, there is lot of scope to improve , personally what we noticed was they won’t give plates , spoons etc until you ask that to for every dish you need to keep asking which we felt bit annoying !! Otherwise everything good there !!

This place just gets better. I went with friends last night after a long absence and was blown away by the food. The flavours were incredible. The service was perfect and the atmosphere was as ever, relaxed, welcoming, and friendly. The food is priced generously, as are the portions and whilst I couldn't eat any more, I would have loved to eaten even more. They are dosa masters, always get a dosa!

We recently visited this place and thank we did to give it a try. Fantastic food, great service. Typical Karnataka style making, really felt home cooked. No food colour, less oil, no other adulteration. I would certainly recommend for vegetarians.

Tried the take away lunch deal for £4.99 and a samosa chaat! Lunch deal had 2 poori, 2 curries, raitha and rice. Poori was good but the rice and curry was bad! It was so watery and tasteless. Not worth the price. Chaat was good.

Terrible Thali (maharaja and udupi) . Only meals in UK Indian cuisine where a meal or any meal is not served with basic white rice , pickles and Rasam . A meal without roti or sabji to be eaten with veg rice instead of white rice . We tried all the meals in menu not worth the money or quality poor recipe chosen for maharaja meal . Not sure which maharaja disliked white rice and atleast pickle in his meal . Atleast description of meal served should have been listed to avoid falling to poor meals choice ,long way to go Shivalli very sorry about it .Not really an authentic udupi recipe .. Replying to owner : Mr Santosh , I would have deleted the review if you were atleast kind enough to apologise or accept to improve it in future for better . Or I would have given 5 star for the lady’s sweet customer service and welcoming gesture very honoured indeed . I am not personally commenting on anything (service and ambience) it’s just the food that had no elements of calling itself as Maharaja bhojana . kindly advise one single restaurant that serves meal without a white rice , how can the full Meals be justified with out basic Karnataka servings of balanced rice and substitutes .You have missed the elementary part of South Indian cuisine / udupi Meals. Atleast I have not asked for unlimited option on Maharaja meals where most restaurants do offer for the meals charged above £19 Sorry ..please have a thought !

A south Indian jewel in the heart of Leicester. It is a south Indian restaurant and so will stick to south Indian dishes. The north Indian dishes have a south Indian tinge to them - personally will avoid them.

Awesome place in Leicester. Authentic South Indian food and tasty as well. They are really helpful in catering to all your requirements like Jain, No Onion etc. This has been an amazing place to taste home away from home. Their Bajjis were super crispy and tasty. Also ordered for their chats in the NONG version and it still tasted yum. It's an overall great experience but we missed their Thali because we arrived during the close hours. Do take your time to relish this place. Huge points for the ambience and the look and feel. The hospitality is appreciated and I'm looking forward to the experience again.
