Shire Horse in Windsor and Maidenhead

If we lived nearer we would most definitely adopt The Shire Horse as our favourite local. Sadly we live 95 miles away in Bristol but we come to meet our friends who travel from Essex and we start with coffee mid morning and stay for a delicious leisurely lunch. The staff are so friendly and accommodating and we especially wish to thank Oakley our main waitress who was delightful and looked after us extremely well. Sadly I don’t have the name of the lovely lady who initially greeted us but she greeted us like old friends and made us feel so welcome. The pub decor is attractive and cosy, smart and clean. Toilets immaculate. We had main courses which were beautifully prepared and delicious too. The sticky toffee pudding was the best we’ve ever had and we pride ourselves on being connoisseurs of that particular dish! We’re already looking forward to our next visit and would like to thank the whole team for giving us such an excellent day.

Excellent service and very good food. Staff very polite and helpful, especially Jonathan and Lewis. We will be visiting again soon.

I came this evening with one of my closest friends. This was my first visit. We were served by Oakley who was so happy and friendly. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. There is good parking, a really nice garden and friendly staff. The tables are set that you do not feel like you’re on top of each other. A great experience. My rump steak was really great and cooked to perfection just as I had asked first.

Been here lots of times so I thought i should review it because its so good. Firstly when you come in of the A4 you see a old style building with some beautiful flowers and furniture next to it . Then you go through the door into the bar were there are a selection of other drinks on tap, and there friendly staff welcoming you in. After ordering you meals you can sit inside or outside and enjoy. Sadly when we came for me dads birthday they were not selling food because the chefs were ill. Still good

7 of us went for roast dinner to celebrate my late Nanny’s birthday. The service was AMAZING and the food was just as great. Olivia served us for the afternoon and was attentive, polite and nothing was too much trouble Emma was great too ☺️ Great value for money and friendly staff!

My husband and I enjoyed dinner here yesterday at 2 pm and were greeted very well then nicely shown to our table. The good and helpful waiter called Connor that served us did an excellent, fully attentive and courteous job. We both really enjoyed eating the “smothered chicken” which was a breast of chicken with bacon and a lovely sauce plus chips, onion rings and lettuce. My husband also enjoyed the sticky toffee pudding and I liked the salted caramel pudding. There was as usual a happy and pleasant atmosphere so we were both very pleased and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Our first time here for dinner. We were welcomed by a very friendly efficient member of staff (I didn’t get his name) as we walked in and informed us our table would be ready in 5 mins. We grabbed a drink at the bar and our table was in deed ready. Food was lovely and hot, didn’t wait long at all. I recommend the Devon crab starter and the Halibut both on the Specials menu. It was my birthday meal with my family and we were all very happy with our service from Grace. She is an asset to your team. We will be back again. Emma (Maidenhead)

We came in for dinner, food was amazing, they were busy yet still very attentive. I recommend the white chocolate tart. Thank you shire horse!

Food was nice when it finally arrived we was a table of 4 on 2nd may but service was slow for both mains and deserts nearly 2 hours in total time.

Service was excellent, environment was lovely, clean and nicely decorated. The older features of the building are a really nice touch. The food was ok, not exceptional. I ordered a chefs special risotto with sea bass and scallops. However, it was more sea bass and scallops with a side of rice cooked with peas. Definitely wasn’t a risotto. Tasted nice nonetheless 😊

Plenty of staff, lovely food and a great menu,we sat outside on a lovely sunny day, music great and age appropriate! Toilets nice and clean and just general a nice place to spend an afternoon. Have been here a few times before and always been great. Would recommend.

Cute little pub that was very welcoming. We met the owner and she was so nice. They were hosting a going away party for someone that lived on the square when we walked in one night. We were able to get a table right away and the servers were quick with everything. We engaged in conversation with most of the staff and several of the patrons. Everyone we encountered was great. 5 stars would recommend and return!

The menu looked really good and it’s a shame the food quality was so disappointing. My chicken was dry and tough, and mostly the food looked and tasted as if it had been under the heat lamps far too long. Best option was probably the lamb shank.

Great food and very friendly, helpful staff. Made a booking this time as it gets very busy.

Waited 1 hour for 2 x teas. Then another hour for 2 x roast dinners. Had to go to bar to chase up bill.

I stopped coming to this restaurant until Jay and his team took over, it has been a complete turnaround. Food is always cooked and presented so well and a really lovely atmosphere. Staff are professional but also good fun and happy to banter. I love the environment, food and drinks. My only complaint is that they are so good at what they do it is hard to get in. Well done Jay and his team.

Went there on the 22nd of Feb. we had Coffee served outside but the Barperson would not bring the Food outside most Odd so we finished the nice coffee and went somewhere else for Food.

Certainly enjoyed the roast and will definitely be back!

Took a friend for a drink here at the weekend he struggles to walk. Could not thank the staff enough for how they made us feel so welcome. I think it’s the deputy manager who pulled a chair out for us as soon as we walked through the door. What a credit he is to your team. Best food I ‘ve eaten at the Pubs around Maidenhead. Also the service is amazing.

Staff are friendly and welcoming. Food is delicious and comfy. Filled me up. The atmosphere is homely and not noisy at all.

The very best aspect of the Shire Horse is the warm friendly welcome and exceptional quality of service. The decor is cosy and attractive mixing traditional and modern design very successfully. The lunch menu offers plenty of choice and each of the four of us had something different. Our meals were attractively presented and we enjoyed them but it was disappointing that on this occasion the chips were not quite hot enough and the pastry on my husband’s meat pie was harder than usual. Sadly the thin chicken breast in what is usually my favourite Hunter’s Chicken was rather dry and parts were difficult to cut. We did have desserts and they were absolutely fine. We come to Shire Horse as it is a perfect half-way venue for meeting our friends from Essex and we come up from Bristol. All the staff are very accommodating and so kind making us feel most welcome when we stay for an extra long, leisurely lunch date and we are so grateful to them all. I felt I should be honest about the food on this occasion but please don’t let it put you off the dining experience because normally the food quality is excellent and if we lived nearer we would DEFINITELY be regular diners! We look forward very much to our next visit.

This was a lunchtime meal to celebrate Valentine’s Day. The experience could best be described as OK. We arrived on time and were welcomed by a polite and friendly young man who checked if we had any allergies or dietary restrictions. We did not. We were shown to a tiny table in a rather dark corner. We accepted it and thought perhaps all other tables were taken although at 3.00 pm it was the end of their lunchtime period. We ordered Rebellion beer and Chilean white wine. The food was ordered from the standard pub classics menu, 2 x mushroom & ale pie. The pie pastry was very crisp & almost too hard to cut into. The mushrooms were fine although the sauce a bit gloopy and overly salty. The rest of the meal being chips, vegetables, peas & gravy, tasted fine although none of it was particularly nicely or attractively presented. Service was average. The waiter was a bit slow to take orders but food arrived very hot and promptly. The waiter was not attentive. I was surprised that he never came back to ask if our food or drinks were satisfactory although he was right next to us cleaning & re-setting tables, so he could easily have paused his cleaning routine to check on us. The other point to mention is the waiter seemed somewhat ham-fisted in his service and plonked the drinks on the table without placing them carefully in front of each customer. Perhaps he’s new to the job. The ambience overall is nice & cosy in winter with a real fire in the front bar area. Unfortunately, the food and the service we feel lets this place down. Value for money is average for this area. You get the impression of being in just another pub chain and of being treated as just another number in the till roll.

on the 10th febuary my partners car broke down not far from this place after being sat for 5 hours in the freezing cold we came here in hopes of something hot to eat they didnt really offer takeaway food but the young man behind the bar (really wish we had got his name) did everything he could to help us out. we got a couple of portions of chips and some croquettes and two hot chocolates he put it all in takeaway containers for us and whilst we waited he put the fire on for us he was absolutley lovely and really lightened the mood after an awful day. i couldnt reccomend this place enough souly based of the friendly staff. the food we got was also lovely well cooked seasoned and hot. the hot chocolates where also lovely amazing for the price. it was very well priced also for the portions. thank you to the shire horse!!!! x

This morning we chose The Shire Horse for a relaxing family breakfast get together, table of 10, 6 adults & 4 children. Yummy breakfast menu for all. Always a warm and friendly welcome, nothing too was much trouble. A big Thank you to all of the the lovely staff that looked after us this morning. We had a fantastic family meal, the steaks were cooked perfectly 👌 my daughters fish was also delicious. This is our favourite local restaurant and never disappoints. Hattie was amazing, she was so polite and friendly. Overall a 5 star visit once again. Thank you. The Davis family

We were a group of 5. It was to celebrate Burns Night - so we were a little disappointed the size of the Haggis, neeps and tatties that were inserted (almost as an afterthought) to the regular menu (The starters and dessert were very good). We thought that the haggis plate should be twice the size and offered as a main course. My sausage and mash were very good, as I hear, was the chicken. The Venison was too rare for one of our party, and maybe it should be offered cooked as a steak (rare, medium, well-done etc). Service was very good, and we will return, but maybe not for Burns Menu.

We were looked after by Bonny, who was exceptionally attentive and the meal was thoroughly enjoyable. Staff like Bonny generate a really positive experience.

Mistakes with the bill, but sorted no problem. Pretty busy, we will visit again. X

We were greeted so warmly and served in an extremely efficient manner. There was a wedding function on in an area of the pub however this didn’t stop us being made feel as really valued customers. Highly impressed with the service and manner in which we were dealt with through your whole meal experience!

Lovely setting, and friendly staff. Food was served promptly, but was just ok (not particularly tasty or flavoursome - descriptions sounded a lot better than what was actually served). Quite expensive for what you get. Ordered a coffee and had to ask three times for it to arrive. Dog friendly. Overall assessment is that although the setting is nice, food is more expensive and less nice than something like a Harvester. Wouldn't return.

Booked for 9 of us on Boxing Day. We were all very much looking forward to it. Majority of the food was very good but one meal was just dreadful. Atmosphere was average, if there hadn’t been crackers on the table you wouldn’t have really known it was Christmas. Service was so very slow. We arrived at 1.45. And 4pm we still hadn’t ordered desert (despite asking 3 times). We had to wait on arrival as our table had to be pushed together Sat there for probably 15 mins and then had to ask for menus. Definitely would not book again for over Christmas. Real shame

Came for Christmas dinner at the shire horse. Was greeted with a warm welcome from Mel, who seated us. We had booked the pre-ordered Christmas dinner. The food was brought out in a timely manor, and Amelia who looked after our table always checked in with us. Each dish was impeccable, especially impressed with the steak dinner as it was cooked perfectly to my liking. The atmosphere is warm, calm, and bubbly,a beautiful balance. Thank you to Mel, Stanley, Amelia and all the staff at the shire horse for making this Christmas special x

Just wanted to say what an amazing team you have here, today was very busy when we arrived. Even though there was a little wait for food the team was getting everyone seated and served as soon as they possibly could. I work in retail and know first hand how overwhelming the rush can get. You all kept your smiles, positivity and professionalism. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas.

We were served by Tom today. He was really friendly & catering and had a good sense of humour. The food was really lovely, couldn’t fault it. Considering it was such a busy period the whole team did really well.

Had our works Xmas meal here. We were originally supposed to be a party of 9 but unfortunately 2 had to drop out. The atmosphere was fabulous, staff very welcoming and attentive, the food and beer was superb. We both had steaks that were perfectly cooked. I love the beer from the local brewery.

Lovely meal here with the girls from work, food great, nice casual, comfy place to spend time but the staff were the best thing, all so friendly and helpful. Our waitress (young lady with long hair, sorry I didn't get her name) couldn't do enough for us and really made our evening a delight. Thank you to all of them!

Our visit was due to us catching up with friends for lunch before Christmas. We were impressed by the vegan options on the menu, as so many establishments offer just a burger and The Shire Horse had some imaginative dishes available. The food was superb and beautifully presented; other pub chains, take note! The ambience in the pub was lovely with a real fire and plenty of atmosphere. The service from the staff was impeccable and professional, with all waiting staff very efficient and attentive, without being intrusive. My husband asked to speak with the manager, which worried the staff, but he wanted to commend the staff, food and management. However, the manager was unavailable so we asked for our comments to be passed on to them and the staff. We have already recommended the pub to other members of our family who live locally and we are going to return for another visit. Many thanks.

We had a family meal here on a Sunday, there were 10 of us and the place was packed. We did wait longer than normal for our food but there were a lot of big parties in there. Food was amazing! Atmosphere was brilliant, very festive and the staff were great.

Served by Bonny who was lovely we have ate here a few times very hit or miss we had the festive menu food was ok but veg was uneditable I didn’t no Brussels sprouts held so much water and turned to mush bacon under cooked fish dry menu has potential if cooked properly I hope you was having a bad day and better for Christmas Day

Don't order the garlic mushrooms for a starter. It's literally 2 small mushrooms on small thin slice of bread. I expected 5 or 6 mushrooms to be honest. For £6.99 or 2 mushrooms, I think day light robbery.

I took my dearest friend for dinner. Wow the food was amazing I would defo recommend the Lamb Shank Shepherds Pie and the Apple Tart. Staff was absolutely lovely & friendly we were served by Oakley she was a delight such a beautiful friendly young lady. Can’t wait to go again defo 5 stars from me & my bestie.
