Very friendly welcome. Plenty of space and lovely views. We had the best salt and pepper squid ever and the sandwiches were absolutely delicious. The views down the estuary are breathtaking. Will definitely come again .

Delicious fish and chips in the Shipwrights Arms last night. We visited with our 2 border collies and were made to feel most welcome by the landlady despite being the only people in the bar on a rainy October Tuesday night. Well worth a visit!

Great food. However did not enjoy the staff attitude of several employees . Was there for a drink on Friday night and a meal on Saturday. On the Friday night, off duty staff on the customer side of the bar were complaining loudly about how there are so many horrible customers and on the Saturday after asking a staff member at around 8.45 what time the bar closed, she said as soon as the last customer leaves - this was audible to the one remaining couple who were at that point left in the bar. The chef however was very cheerful and welcoming. The atmosphere in general though did spoil the ambiance.

I live locally. The service can be hit and miss when it's busy which I generally tolerate, but today was an absolute joke. I walked into the bar with my friend and waited. There were two older gentlemen at the corner of the bar, one being served and one waiting. While the first gentleman was being served a (literal) queue formed going outside even though the rest of the bar was free. The lady behind the bar with the dark hair and red lipstick seemed to be fixated on this newly formed queue despite three other people waiting. The new queue tried to jump in front of second man waiting, he made her aware he was already waiting so we said we were after him. She served the older guy and went back to the queue, so we said "no sorry we were next" and she wouldn't serve us, claiming the new queue was here before we were. If you are the sole person serving at a bar, please pay more attention to what order your patrons arrive. It's a bar, since when has queueing at a bar been a thing? I'm not joining the end of a queue when I've been waiting for a good five mins. We left, the sailing club is across the road and is 1) much cheaper 2) better views and 3) better service. We come here often with friends, family, and visitors but you aren't the only option in the local area. It might be worthwhile not p*ssing off the people that keep you going when rich tourists aren't here to do so.

The pub is in a fantastic location. We ate here 3 times in the evening during our holiday. In general, we were really happy with the food we had. I had Fish &Chips one evening and it was exceptional. The fish was Hake and the portion was really generous. The only downside was on two occasions there seemed to be a staff shortage leading to a slightly longer wait. Not a problem for us but may upset some people. We would definitely recommend eating here but would advise to book as it was always busy.

The family and I popped into this pub while visiting the area. While I was at this pub, I overheard who I assume is the manager with a customer and a chef. They were speaking very loudly about the chef who is staying in the holiday lets and that he had lost his phone. The manager then said she’d go in and rummage through peoples stuff, so she went into the holiday lets and went through things and returned with his phone. It made us finish our drinks and leave because of how unprofessional they were. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. We are staying in a holiday let in another town and god forbid that happened to us, I’d be distraught. Let alone publicly discussed around customers. I had to write on here because I was appalled. The manager was very unfriendly since we got there and the chef had his whites on out the front ranting about his phone. Safe to say I wouldn’t be going back here, if the atmosphere is like that, I can’t imagine the food/prep.

We stumbled upon the Shipwrights a couple of years before covid. It was so good, we returned several times for Sunday lunch - a truly marvelous experience. We returned just after covid was subsiding, but were disappointed Sunday lunches were off, due to a kitchen conversion. We returned in March 2024 for a Sunday lunch and it met/exceeded expectations :-) We will, no doubt, be returning to this wonderful place, where the staff are friendly, scenery is wonderful, and food great. Try it - you'll love it!

We've lived local for many years and have seen the Shipwrights go through many stages and management. The recent investment and upgrades have made a made a great Pub even better. We've always found the duty manager and staff to be welcoming and efficient, in what is a very challenging time for the hospitality industry. This pub is great for a casual night out and to wine and dine with friends and family . It has breathtaking views across the Helford river , the atmosphere is warm , welcoming and lively . I’ve been visiting for 40+ years and it is always a must go to , and a joy to visit every time . I am shocked by some of the negative reviews . I can only assume they are from disgruntled former employees who were obviously not up to the high standards required in a successful, busy popular pub .

Having been regulars for a good three decades, we are really delighted that the pub had finally transformed the outside space - it looks incredible! However, sadly, that is the only positive we can take from our last few visits. Over the last couple of years, the service has gone from bad to worse, and we have been left completely dumbfounded at the rudness and complacency of some of the staff. We last visited on Friday, and it was truly wonderful to see so many local faces, however, we witnessed the duty manager dismiss a family that had just arrived in the village for their holiday with such rudeness and blatant disdain that we were left completely shocked and saddened. What is more, we watched as another member of village got handed a tab that definitely did not belong to them, and the same member of staff then publicly humiliate them into paying it. It is such a shame, as it such a brilliant pub and in the best location of all (we admittedly are bias on this point), but we feel the current management needs to reviewed, as they're really letting the place (and village) down...

The location of this pub is amazing. Recommend going at high tide when the water laps against the sides. The food & service were great. The only thing I think could be improved a bit is the atmosphere. Perhaps a few candles on the tables and some curtains & blinds in the winter months to make it a bit cosier. Love this pub!

Fabulous views but the service was shambolic and the food mediocre. We have a disabled adult daughter and so always check out the menu online before booking anywhere. All seemed to be good as they advertised as offering pizza. On arrival and after being seated we were given the menu which comprised of a few starters, fish and chips, burger and chips, Goan seafood curry, and vegan Goan curry. I enquired about the pizzas and was told the website needed updating. I asked for a children’s menu and they don’t have one. We deliberated leaving without eating as there was nothing our daughter could eat out of those four options and we made this very clear to the waitress. I asked if they had any pasta. No they did not. Finally we thought we could manage and ordered her the tiger prawns that were a starter, and I asked if the chef could peel them before they were served. They said no. All in all a very poor experience that cost the best part of £60. To make matters worse, as I went to pay the bill I saw a Specials Menu. Our attention had not been drawn to this at all, and when I said this whilst paying the staff just shrugged their shoulders. Very disappointing and I would not recommend it.

Upon entering the pub I was greeted with who I assume is the manager sat down on her iPad and didn’t clock I was there at the bar waiting for at least 2-3 minutes. You’d assume a friendly, apologetic manner after that but I assumed incorrect. Good start. The toilets were a mess and my partner didn’t enjoy the food, it was over cooked and just unappetising. Looking at reviews I doubt we or many others will be back next year at this rate.

Firstly, we have been here many times and enjoyed good food. So we chose it for my husband’s very special birthday lunch. Oh what a huge disappointment and mistake. It was embarrassingly awful. Burnt ungarnished flavourless scallops at £12 a plate, uncooked rice with a flavourless, unattractive and paltry Goan curry at £23 that looked like a very cheap ready meal, burnt (!) solid chips, mediocre burger etc. I had previously had the goats cheese salad and raved about it. What on Earth had they done this time? The cheese was curdled, no fig on it and the salad was sad. The overall meal cost a fortune for what it was. Even the staff were embarrassed and knocked off £10 (!) without being asked. Our abiding memory of a very special family holiday will be of the awful feeling of knowing that you’ve been totally disappointed and the feeling of embarrassment with everyone trying to pretend it was ok. It really truly wasn’t and ruined my husband’s birthday.

Absolutely beautiful experience it was my 30th birthday and my first time here. The food was outstanding. The detail and taste was so tasty. And it was beautifully presented. I had the fresh fish hake, chorizo , prawns , potatoes and salsa Verde and it was cooked beautifully. Knowing the fish was caught that morning made me feel like I was on holiday and like I had helped a local. My friend had the halloumi salad which was so fresh and filling. everything came so hot. We treated ourselves to a pudding I had the passionfruit posset and my friend had the gf chocolate brownie both melted in your mouth. The service was fantastic. All the staff are very helpful and so kind. They were all on hand whenever you needed and they make you smile . Especially G the Italian waiter. He was so good with any age of customer. We were given a £40 e-voucher in July 2020 for The Shipwright's Arms by a very thoughtful member of staff who knows we love Cornwall and holiday there every summer. Redeemable until July 2021. Because of COVID today was our first opportunity to use this and taking my elderly mother for a May Bank Holiday treat seemed like a perfect reason. We called yesterday to book a table and were told they were not taking bookings, but to arrive early as they expected to be busy. We arrived just after 12.00pm. The manager said the pub had changed hands and absolutely refused to accept the e-voucher, an email with The Shipwright's Arms logo. He repeatedly insisted that he needed to know who had issued it. As it was a gift we couldn't supply that information. We did try to call the person who gave it to us without success. I explained that we had driven for an hour and would undoubtedly spend more than the value of the voucher. He inferred the voucher may not be genuine and refused to reach a compromise. Appalling customer service. I will be taking efforts to recover the £40 and will not be returning to The Shipwright's Arms - ever! We did however recover the situation by having a delicious lunch at Trelowarren Estate which i whole heartedly recommend.

Our first post lockdown meal was a bit of a disappointment if I’m honest. I understand things may take some time to get back to normal but I wanted to write this review to help the pub (if they read it!) We had to wait a bit for a table, and then for our drinks - which wasn’t an issue as they were quite busy. However the fish and chips we both ordered wasn’t great. The batter was quite greasy, hard and with the skin still attached to the fish...which didn’t taste that fresh. The chips were great but you get hardly any. The peas were dried up and flavourless. For £13, I expected a lot more. It’s such a shame as the pub itself is lovely, in a fantastic location with beautiful views. Maybe they are having a few teething problems but I was a bit disappointed sadly.

Was kept waiting a while for a table & was told it had a view. What they didn’t say it’s also right next to the door to outside & we’ll be going in & out constantly as will our customers & nobody bothers to close it. I must have shut it 20 times during our meal. Why not put a closer on it? The heating wasn’t even on & we were freezing.Had an ok starter of halloumi & soup. That was fine but then we had roasts. My friends had pork & that looked ok ( they asked for more gravy as it was a bit dry). I had the No nut veggie option & it was inedible. It tasted like sweet potato mush that had been left in the oven overnight & was black on the outside. Absolutely vile. I left nearly all of it & didn’t complain ( I was with friends & we were enjoying a nice weekend so didn’t want to ruin it). The Yorkshire puddings were absolutely tasteless ( maybe vegan?). The drinks were good & my friend have a lovely gin. The staff serving were very pleasant & nice girls. I’d go back for a drink only- I was very put off by this food.

Very relaxing sitting by the river with great views over the the beautiful estuary.Although nothing to do with the Shipwright Arms why in these Covid times why does the car park operators npt offer the facility to pay the pay parking fee with a credit card, as cash is discouraged at this time. Everybody was really disciplined about following current guidelines. Drinks have very decent prices and they offer a good selection. Clean washrooms and and interior. Very nice also when you come in with dogs. While the food is somewhat more expensive than in other pubs, it is also of very high-quality. We absolutely enjoyed the beer-battered fish & chips, the great vegan Goan curry and the Goan fish curry, although the latter two could use some more spices. We arrived 'on spec' (which one should NOT do as the restaurant is often fully pre-booked). The Manager arrived at opening time in a bit of a flurry. But, they opened on time and they DID find us a table. which was appreciated. We had drinks which were all average, if a bit overpriced. Well-placed overlooking the estuary and dog-friendly with water bowls available. The food was OK overall - the cod in batter was excellent and on its own rated a good 9 out of 10 but the chips were an ordinary mass produced product with no great taste or texture. They were at least hot and not greasy, but otherwise bland. Let down by the service - cutlery not brought until after the food delivered, no condiments until requested (more waiting) and waiting staff who were friendly enough but lacked any real engagement.

Always enjoy a trip into the Shipwright. Had a couple of meals, one with the four of us, the other with friends. Not too expensive and foods fine for the money. To be honest you go for the unique and chilled location. Pizza nights a good quick dining experience if you are in a particular rush.Seemed to be frequented mainly by well to do types, mostly the sailing sort, but don’t let that put you off, all appeared pleasant enough.

We were a party of 8 and had prebooked our choices. All lunches came out together and were nice and hot.The beef I had was beautifully cooked and tasty but there was a hidden gem on the plate! That was the roast potatoes. They were sooo lovely and crunchy. My husband and I returned in the week and had Fish and Chips, and again was hot and tasty, and very good value. Service was attentive and whether it’s raining or sunny, is the perfect spot to while away a few joyous hours. (Maybe the Rattlers could have been colder) can’t wait to be in the area again.

Visited yet again on Thursday for our usual steak and my mixed seafood curry,,surprised that there were only 5 other people there.we've been coming here for the past three years even though it's a 40 mile trip.To say we were dissapointed would be an under statement,I had the £20 steak and chips ,cheap and nasty frozen chips a small plain tasting steak and some small tomatoes 5 shrivelled up small mushrooms,,,,not a happy man .My wife had her usual mixed seafood curry which apart from going UP in price has gone DOWN in quality and quantity, there were only 2 prawns in it there was No white fish in it at all,and there usually is,it was just muscles, and the portion size was small. So I have to agree with smudgecirencester tomSudders PM England Lizzyboo51 and Ndb1989 that the food at this pub has really gone downhill, and strangely I see its up for sale yet again.

We are often in Helford and visit here occasionally, always hoping for a better experience, because the view from this pub, whether approached by water or land, is always sensational. Unfortunately, the itinerant staff distain the customers unless personally known to them, the allocation of tables is inscrutable and the food anyway is often poor, prepared out the back by a couple of ‘boys’, as the front of house staff call them. None of this deters large middle class families from taking over the bar areas and allowing their small children to race about and scream their heads off. I see the business is up for sale again.

After walking for 3 hours in the rain I was worried about my soggy appearance. The staff could not have been more welcoming. Or patient as I dried my dog off before paying. Fabulous snug bar area and restaurant with lovely views. All dog friendly. Had fish goujon sandwich. Just lovely! Great bar. Lovely friendly atmosphere. I will definitely be back.

Reading the last reviews you’d think we’d been to a different place! We’re a family of 5, and we ate here twice in the last week and loved it. Highlights were the fish curry, risotto and local fish and chips - don’t miss the lemon posset for dessert all washed down with a pint or so of Tribute!

The contrast between the Helford and the West coast of the Lizard could not be more pronounced. Daphne Du Maurier still lives. Dreamy estuary, spectacular views and food just so Cornish its Magical.

Unfortunately we were just to late in the season to try the legendary pizzas from the Shipwrights! We hadn't been here for a long time and were impressed with the redesigned indoor eating areas . Good hearty food, slightly slow service.

We were staying in Helford village so we went to the Shipwrights twice during our holiday. Both times we were greeted by lovely friendly staff, drinks order taken and shown to our table overlooking the river. The food didn't take long to arrive and was delicious on both evenings. The only issue was the usual "is everything OK" visit to the table while we were eating and trying to reply with a mouthful of excellent food is not easy! Also, one of my personal pet hates is being called "guys". Please don't. It's an Americanism and I most certainly am not a guy! Having said that, if we are ever fortunate enough to be in Helford again we would most certainly return.

Dropped into the Shipwrights Arms the other day at lunchtime and waited 45 minutes for an expensive and mediocre crab sandwich. Still, I suppose with a view to die for, no competition in the vicinity and no shortage of punters coming through the door they don't have to try too hard. Won't bother going back there. Very disappointing.

Without a doubt, The Shipwright's Arms, with its gorgeous thatched roof, is in a superb location - we started and ended our walk along Frenchman's Creek in the pub. Sitting on the veranda, there is a lovely view of the river. We ate sandwiches: the crabmeat was good, but the tomato bruschetta average. The choice of beers was limited.

Group of us went for a meal, some of our group were known in the pub and we spoke with a lot of people . The menu is quite sophisticated and you can certainly get some good food here. The scallops were good but the hake was fantastic. Hassleback potatoes and chorizzo make for something special.

Just felt the need to pop on here to say how good the pizza is at Shipwrights!! Soooo good. The pub has a lovely relaxed outside area overlooking the river. We ordered a half pepperoni / half Hawaiian pizza and some chips. Just enough for a lunch. Honestly though we both agreed that it was one of the best pizzas we’d had in ages!! So definitely try that if the pizza oven outside is open.

The Shipwrights is in a stunning location, but our experience was completely let down by the integrity of the food versus the price. In a group of 3 adults, 1 child (& 1 baby) we ordered 3 crab sandwiches and 1 children’s pasta. The crab sandwiches comprised thick “doorstop” bread with a thin layer of crab which was almost undetectable. I love a rustic style sandwich, but the filling needs to be chunky to suit the bread. In the case of the crab sandwich, the bread is just far too thick. Great to see a children’s menu offered, and pesto & pea pasta was welcomed by the 4yo.

We sat on the quay with a great view of the Helford. The food was exceptional and much better than we had been told. My wife thinks these are the best pizzas outside Mori Turi and Calcaccio in Capetown , thin crust and with great local produce and certainly the best in the UK. The fish and chips were also exceptional. This is a great spot and certainly worth a visit.

Yet another Cornish pub/restaurant which should be scoring 5 stars with ease, the setting / location are second to none but you need to have this backed up with great service & real quality offerings. I have reviewed the Shipwrights before & is always on my to visit list when I stay at St Anthony in the Helford. We came on a Saturday evening to celebrate my sons 18th Birthday so quite a special occasion along with close friends so I had pre-booked a table a couple of weeks in advance as I was fully aware of how busy it can get. After being shown to a great table in one of their vestibules we sat & waited & waited a little longer in fact after 40 minutes I dispatched my son to the bar to ask if we had to order at the bar for food ?, after being told 'no' someone would be with us shortly not a great start but no great issue as we were all having a good laugh & conversations around the table.

Close to the beach but wildly overpriced for really basic fare and their “artisan gelato” is disgusting. We tried three flavours and they were all terrible, but the chocolate was so atrocious we couldn’t finish it. Ask yourself when the last time you didn’t finish an ice cream was!

On holiday for a week and we visited 3 times. First time was for a drink only, second for an evening meal and thenthirdnfir Sunday lunch. On all occasions, service was friendly, attentive (without being in your face or false) and courteous. Our evening meal was a beautiful piece of grilled haddock in a very tasty sauce with vegetables and potatoes. We also ordered a side of truffled mac n cheese. It was absolutely amazing. Sunday lunch was probably the best I've ever eaten as a pub dining experience and I've eaten a fair few in my 59 years. We opted for the 3 meat version of beef, pork and turkey. The vegetable selection was interesting and perfectly cooked. The giant yorkshire pudding was delicious but for me, the roast potatoes and gravy were the jewels in the very large crown. There was no room for pudding but on our evening visit, we did share the amaretto chocolate torte, which was fantastic 😀. For the quality and portion sizes, I would say The Pityme Inn is excellent value for money.
