Ruby's Bar in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Visited on a Monday afternoon and wasn’t particularly inspired by the range of cocktails nor the inflated prices. Stuck with just one pint of beer and a Prosecco. We would have loved to have settled in for a few but the overwhelming smell of urine and/or dog was so off putting that we moved on.

Sam the bar person was really busy on the night that we attended but took time to chat while working really hard, we sat at the bar and watched his industrious efforts to keep everyone happy and supplied with drinks and food to great effect. A gentleman for someone of such a young age and we are sure that whoever employs this young man appreciates him dearly

The bar itself is in a lovely building right in the centre of the town. Decor inside is rustic and tasteful. The bar has several little nooks to sit in so feels very small and intimate. The bar staff were lovely, friendly and helpful. I was in a party of four friends and two dogs and we were on holiday so all in a lovely mood and enjoying ourselves. We ordered four drinks - an espresso martini, a margarita and two double gin and tonics. The drinks were ok - not amazing but fine. But the bill was eye-watering and the only reason we’re marking this place down. Not only was there a massive hike in the cost of the shots ordered - way more than Rick Stein’s other establishments nearby - but there was a 12.5% service charge added to the bill which we didn’t notice til later. In a bar, where we went and ordered and carried our own drinks! We are totally understanding of high rents in these central locations, but the surrounding bars and restaurants weren’t hiking up the prices this much nor adding additional service charges. To repeat, the staff were lovely, it’s not their fault. But the gratuitous price hike for standard drinks and the addition of the service charge means we won’t return to this place - it’s nice, but not that nice.

At the prices they charge, you would expect the staff to be courteous and polite. A couple on an adjacent table left without ordering, we followed a few minutes later.

If you've never been to a bar before, you might be moderately impressed. Unfortunately, I've been to a few. Service is unnecessarily slow and drinks look okay but do not taste as they should.

Great little bar, bar staff completely attentive and helpful, told to find a table they would come to us to take the drinks order, came over with a water bowl for dog! Which he was very grateful for after running on the beach, service was quick and very pleasant, relaxed environment in which is a very busy town.

It's ok, too small downstairs, cramped and impersonal.

£15 minimum for a drink. Blackened slimy mint mojito. Barman had no clue what a Caipirinha or Perfect Manhattan are. 25mins + for 2 cocktails then another 10 for someone to run upstairs to fetch the beer???!!! Manager offered apologies but no concession on the bill. Poor service and poor cocktails!

First visit, really cosy, not many customers we were early. Lovely wine, staff were great. Will certainly be revisiting 🍷🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿. We didn't have snacks or food.

So nice to come into a bar with nice background music rather than disco/pop music booming out and tv’s all around the room. A quirky bar which provided great G&T and crisp Harbour Ale. Great bar staff that were friendly and made the visit worthwhile. It’s not the cheapest but it’s worth the money and the visit.

Apparently sticking the name Stein in front of something allows you to double the standard price and use cheaper ingredients. A clover Club, which the average price in the UK is £11.50, and can be bought just around the corner using premium ingredients for £9, now costs £15!!! And a small watery espresso Martini the same?! Add on the mandatory service charge and you're at almost £20 each and you'll wish you'd had pre-dinner drinks at home! I watched my espresso martini be made, and they literally poured it from 1 bottle. I've no clue what went in it. I'm not sure the barman does either. Pre-batched crud probably made by margain mad managers, charged out at a premium coz one Steiny or another sat there butt on that same cushion.

Thankfully the gorgeous cocktails were worth the wait because we did have to wait. The ladies for their cocktails and the gentleman for their pints. Cocktails I expect to wait for because they are made fresh to order with many ingredients and components but not the men's pints.

Went to Ruby’s and ordered beers. Didn’t know it was a cocktail bar, no clear signage to that effect. Very quiet for a Friday evening. Barman struggled to understand what ‘a pint and a half’ meant. No draught downstairs so we sat at our table and had to wait for beer to arrive. Eventually a waiter appeared, put a pint in front of me and seemed to ask my wife who the half was for although there was no-one else within ten feet of us. At the end, went to pay but struggled to get either bartender’s attention. Bartender who took our payment found it hard to understand what we were paying for. It was like visiting a pub on Mars.

Margot has made us some absolutely fantastic cocktails not the menu. WOW. Thank-you

Chilled out, good selection of Cocktails and spirits, however poor selection of craft beers which was disappointing. Never had anything to eat so can't comment on the food.

Nice dog friendly cocktail bar, good selection of cocktails, nice atmosphere, a good selection of scotch and a few Japanese whiskey's. Table service was excellent, very attentive and helpful staff. We found it by accident as some stairs from St Petroc bistro took us to Ruby's Bar.

Lovely place for a drink before going to seafood restaurant. Although was very dusty and there was cobwebs on the lights. Hope they give it a clean soon

Great cocktail selection, very cozy for a wet evening in the summer, slow service but worth the wait.

Lovely end to the night. Separate seating areas meant our group had its own private space. The bar man had amazing knowledge, and made suggestions, and the cocktails were gorgeous.

Had a nice time but the mixologist put us off. Probably would have stayed longer.

An adorable vintage style bar, by Rick Stein! It felt authentic not pretentious. Very small so get there early to get a seat! Dogs were happily allowed in, friendly staff.

Nice cocktails and a lovely place to sit and rest. They do go down a bit easy though!

The bar was nice enough, however the pompous entitled barman made sure that my girlfriend and I were so unwelcome, that we gave our custom to one of the many better establishments in Padstow. Avoid if possible.

Lovely bar with friendly mixologist. Rustic interior. Spent the whole evening enjoying delightful G&Ts and ciders. Tarquin’s and the Cornish Orchard’s cider is simply hard to say no to! Keep them coming!!

Had fabulous early evening drinks here. Heads up to Rob,the barman, so lovely, polite and knowledgeable about the cocktails, spirits etc. Fabulous guy.will be back xx the sunday night birthday party pensioners x

Having booked a table months in advance we arrived to find that whilst we were on the system as booked there was no table allocated for us. With no apology or acknowledgment of the mistake on their behalf and zero interest or service from any of the staff we were left feeling incredibly disappointed as we had been looking forward to the occasion for a long time. A poor experience and atmosphere for what is presumed to be a quality cocktail bar.

A quirky little bar which we happened upon in search of a pre dinner drink. It almost felt like stepping back in time. Only bottled beers (but a good choice) but a good selection of wines and cocktails. £18 for 1 beer and 1 glass of wine is on the expensive side but I guess that is the Rick Stein/Padstow premium that you pay. We would return.

Fantastic selection of drinks and chilled out atmosphere. Would recommend the gins on offer, friendly staff and great vibes .

We drank the most amazing cocktails in here every nite for 5 days. The Gentleman’s whisky was fab and the missus loved the gin range. Was also convenient to stagger upstairs to Ricks. Shame all the bat snack foods was not available when we visited,

This would always be our default if Bin2 was closed/full hence we ended up her on a wet February evening. Great service by Aaron, although he could have benefited from another pair of hands as it became quite busy. Great gin choice. You can’t beat the Rick Stein fennel gin with 2725 tonic, although I also tried the Twisted nose. We enjoyed a couple of drinks with a decent size portion of patron peppers as bar snacks. Much better than I remember the bar and would certainly go again.

Nice cosy and bohemian setting. Ideal for couples pre/post-dinner. Chic. The quality of the cocktail itself was good.Service appalling... Think understaffed maybe. Tables not cleared - or wiped. Guests moving glasses from table to table as they came and went - and the server just walked past the tables (which seems inexplicable) without cleaning them up. We had to personally ask for our table to be wiped down from the previous customers spilt drinks. Service is not table-service (or maybe it is - no indication is given) people gave up waiting and queued up at the bar in a long line...The place was not over-full - but most tables filled with couples... The waiter / server appeared overwhelmed. If this bar were in London it would be closed within a week... But it has potential if better staffed (needs 2 servers not 1), and the staff have pride in the tables/ customer experience (not sure that can be taught).

This small bar offers a short list of pricey cocktails and gins with table service. I think there is a place for this kind of bar in Padstow, but I didn't feel like this place hit the mark. It wasn't quite nice enough to warrant the cost. Better atmosphere, nicer decoration and more reasonable prices are to be found nearby. That being said the bar staff were very friendly.

We went in on Saturday afternoon, it was nice and quiet. Had the blackberry gin cocktail and a margarita. Very nice. (But, my first cocktail was served to me in a chipped glass, which I had to ask to be changed!)

Maybe it was because it was out of season, but this place lacked atmosphere which meant we didn't really settle or feel relaxed there. The staff were friendly and dressed smart. The decor is dark and quirky which is typical of any good cocktail bar. I thought it smelt a bit but that could have been the two dogs in there. I get having dogs in pubs and love them but personally, I don't think they should be allowed in this type of place. Then there's the price. Where most places would charge about £8, from memory the ones here were around £10-£12. They did taste great but no better than I've had before.It could be a real gem for Padstow but I think it needs some rethinking.

Great bar tender, friendly and attentive. The drinks were amazing and beautifully garnished. One of the best places to drink in Padstow.

Had a nice time in Rubys bar prior to the charity lunch which was upstairs in the same building. A very nice bar with a good selection of cocktails, beers and wines in comfortable surroundings. A perfect start to a very enjoyable afternoon.

Went here prior to dinner, really great cocktails but service a little slow. Cosy seating and other like minded couples enjoying a quiet drink but not keen on the decor.

Was very excited to go to Ruby’s as I love a cocktail. Popped in around 9pm to be greeted by a rather grumpy member of staff. Cocktails were great, venue lovely but service was poor. Not even a smile. Such a shame. If the young lad had looked liked he cared I would of definitely rated it excellent.

Rude, stuck up staff. Such a shame in such quirky environment. Won’t be returning. Too many other good places in Padstow to bother with this

4 Friends and I had the great pleasure of spending the morning being shown around Tarquin's Gin and tasting the fabulous product just over a week ago. We learnt from Charlie himself how they collaborated on the Rick Stein Gin. Attempted to wax our own Gin Bottles. Then were chauffer driven to the private dinning room at Ruby's/St Petroc for the most delicious lunch which was paired with equally tasty Gin based cocktails. The food was sublime and the company entertaining with Charlie Stein and Rory for Tarquin's Gin hosting the lunch. The day was great value for money and I feel a once in a life time opportunity. Perfect in every way.

Stopped in here for a drink and discovered the bar more by luck than chance.

Great and quite unusual margherita. Apparently Rick learnt this combination on his trip to Mexico.

This is a small quirky bar but we didn’t warm to it. Cocktail Menu is fairly limited but they do make a number of others to order. I tried a Ricks Colombo gin, didn’t like it so the barman swapped it for a caipirinha which was very good. We felt it lacked atmosphere and preferred our pre dinner drinks in one of the local pubs

This bar has lots of character & charm. The quality of the cocktails is very good. We had a portion of the halloumi fries which complemented our drinks perfectly as they were nice and salty. The Espresso martini are highly recommended

Warm and friendly atmosphere. Dog friendly and the staff had excellent knowledge on flavour combinations on the drinks. Will definitely be back

Yet again we went in for a pre-dinner drink, but had to leave before getting one. Teb minutes after we arrived we were still waiting for our order to be taken, there were 2 other couples to be served and have their drinks made by the single barman & it would have made us late for our dinner booking. To have a single server to take orders/make the drinks and serve them when they make a big deal of shaking a cocktail makes it impossible to get a drink! Disappointed (again)

Went here on two nights, really like it, but with such a small bar and insufficient staff you wait far to long to be served. Drinks are good and well made, but like everything to do with Rick, it comes at a price.

What a beautiful place Ruby’s is. Great atmosphere and loved the table service. Cocktails hit the mark too. Will be back as soon as I can!

Lovely bar with a cosy local feel. Good selection of drinks, with fairly attentive service. Only negatives were the staff’s ability to clear away plates/drinks we had finished with even though our replacement drinks had been mixed and delivered and whilst the olives were a delight the halloumi was a little tepid and have gone from being lovely and squidgy to rubbery and chewy.

Excellent place to be. Superb food, lovely and very helpful staff in a great atmosphere.

Love it at Ruby’s bar, great Margarita and a good feel. Part of the stein empire but it feels authentic. Joins to st petrocs although you wouldn’t know it.

Nice bar but ridiculously pricey £26 for 2 double gins and we shared 1tonic ! Bar staff were friendly and good service though .

Cosy little Gin bar with a great atmosphere

We decided to give this place a try for our pre-dinner drinks in preference to the other options nearby. My wife plumped for her normal negroni whist I chose the Harbour IPA, both of which were fine. Reasonable prices and service, but the place seemed to lack a bit of atmosphere.

We popped into Ruby’s for a drink before dinner. It was fairly quiet and there was one barman working. I managed to get his attention and he gave us drinks menus and we took a seat. 15 minutes later we left having not being served. Even an apology that he was busy and would be with us as soon as possible would have been appreciated. We went to a good bar nearby and got served immediately. No need for this and very disappointing.

Went to gin taste event having attended several previously. The young chap doing the event was well spoken presented well and good knowledge of the gin. However in our view totally missed the points that the tonics and fruit or veg made a world of difference to the tastes. Yes it was a pleasant way to pass an hour but not changing the tonics offered missed a trick in our view to the gin experience evening,

Great atmosphere and super great bartender. Engaging and very knowledgeable. He will make drinks to order or suggest local beers and liquors. Very attractive room but he really makes the place happen.

This is a nice place for pre dinner drinks, especially if you are dining in St Petroc's bistro (as it's just a few steps upstairs). The cocktails are wonderful, each time we have been in here we have had to drag ourselves away so that we don't miss our table reservation. The place has a pleasant, cosy atmosphere as well.

Expensive but nice if you want to start the evening with cocktails

A small and very quirky bar. Laid back and relaxed with a wide range of interesting drinks. Not the place to go if you want to prop up the bar and guzzle pints of lager with blaring music. However, if you want to enjoy your drink while holding a conversation then it’s for you. Great place to unwind in an unhurried atmosphere.

Great little bar tucked up a side street in padstow. Worth a visit.

We visited after dinner with our 8 year old who had his ice cream. They were happy for him to have this there whilst we had a gin. No under 18s in the bar (that’s fine) but kids can go upstairs to the lounge area. This is very comfortable and relaxing and the cocktails and guns are delicious. Luckily for us, our 8 year old loves it here and so we had to make keep going back - what a shame!

We came in on a Wednesday night when very quite, spent £36 in less than 1 hour and got told we should not be in because we had a child with us. She is 5mths old and was fast asleep when we was there and no noise. Outside did not state under 18s not welcome. The guy was looking at us all the time which was uncomfortable. We spend alot of money one one drink and will never go again!

We had pre-dinner cocktails before No.6 and the atmosphere in Ruby's was just a little off. Not sure what it was. The cocktails themselves were all good though.

If you are reading this, then you know that Rick Stein is Padstow - aka Padstein. Ruby's Bar is an excellent compact and Bijou establishment adjacent to St. Petroc's Bistro - both are part of the Rick Stein family of establishments in Padstow. We arrived on Easter Saturday and after a short time walking around the harbour with the dog, we decided we needed to escape. Ruby's is exactly what we needed. My wife had a cool glass of bubbles and I had a Curio Samphire Gin. Both perfect. Great that we could take the dog in as well. Tripadvisor thinks Ruby's is a resturarant and the questions asked support that supposition. Ruby's is not, it is a bar.

Came here after a lovely meal at The Seafood Restaurant. The espresso martinis are very moorish, the bar is very cosy and friendly and prices are as you'd expect in a good cocktail bar.

Cute little bar but the price of the drinks were too expensive. Feels like your paying for the name when he owns so many other places in the area anyway.

Amazing gin and tonics a lovely setting what is there not to like?

I went with a group of 5 friends after dinner for a final drink on the way home. We had three cocktails, an “artisan gin” and tonic, a vodka and coke and one other drink-can’t remember what. It came to £75! Really should have just said no thanks and left but some of us had already started drinking, we had already had a few drinks elsewhere and I think we were so shocked we didn’t. Wish we had.

Visited Ruby’s bar for a pre dinner drink however having visited here previously I was slightly disheartened when I left this time.

Really love Ruby’s bar. The staff are great and customer service is impeccable. They work hard and make very good cocktails! Felt very welcome and they make great cocktails. Bar is warm and cosy and very relaxing.

An average cocktail menu with only slightly higher than average prices. Service and mixologist far below par. Only one bar tender in a bar where you should be getting table service. A que at the bar and the barman mixed the drinks like he wanted to murder them. The bar staff lacked hospitality and need some serious training in mixology, without the recipe they would be lost. In summary, a bit of a let down, London prices but less than average mixologists.
