Beautiful home made crumble with ice cream and a carafe of coffee .. tasty .. great personal individualised service .. ambience warm and cosy .. what’s not to like about it! I didn’t have a main today but if I had have done, I’d have gone for the fish and chips. I come to the area once every six weeks or so and always head to the Ship Inn .. well done Debra who always looks after me well ..

To a chance on this pub whilst in the area to drop my in laws at the airport. We were seated quickly and reminded about inputting our registration into the parking screen near the bar . The staff were great and accommodating when we asked for slight changes to our meals . Was a bit of a wait but we were in no rush and so wasn’t an issue . When it arrived the food was great, no complaints at all . They were happy to supply Tupperware to take food home . Good food and friendly staff made the visit very enjoyable.

Me and my family came to the Ship for a roast dinner yesterday and the experience was mixed. The ambiance was warm and very busy, the pub itself is beautiful and sets the mood for a nice lunch, we sat in the pub garden which was lovely. However, for so many tables there seemed to be only two staff covering the entirety, never seen two people run around so much. We were served by a lovely young man named 'Jake', who was very caring, friendly and never failed to make us laugh. Even though we waited a while for drinks and food, his attentiveness made the experience more enjoyable. Even though the pub was so understaffed Jake made sure to get us anything we needed and always had a smile on his face. I don't normally write reviews but this young man deserves the appraisal for working so hard! Food was lovely and will be returning but on a quieter day.

Lovely pub but slow service. All the meals came in dribs and drabs, and twice they forgot some of the order. There didn't seem to be any senior management about and I felt sorry for the staff who clearly lacked direction. Such a shame as it's in a lovely location. I'd go back for a pint but not for food.

A truly lovely experience at The Ship. We were greeted by THE loveliest member of staff, Izzy, who made us feel so welcome. She helped us pick our options and they did not disappoint. The fish from the fish and chips melted in your mouth and my partner loved his steak and ale pie. It is expensive but that is to be expected when visiting a more up market area to live. It's such a cosy atmosphere and beautifully decorated. Izzy absolutely matched my sense of humour and had us giggling and leaving with the biggest smile on our faces. Thank you so much for a lovely meal and experience :)

We came for Father’s Day lunch, plus celebrating my Step Dads 60th birthday. We’ve been here loads and have never had a bad meal. Same again today, me and my husband got the lamb roast to share. So much food came, a big hunk of lamb, roasties, mash, cabbage, broccoli, mashed carrots, Yorkshire pudding, cauliflower cheese! Every bit was amazing and sooooo tasty. My Mum ordered the salmon & prawn rigatoni, and step dad ordered the fish & chips (he’d been praying for it to be on the specials 😂). Every bit of food was eaten, delicious 😋 Excellent service by David, such a lovely, attentive and friendly host. Oh by the way when we book the ‘Cruz’ you’re definitely coming 😂 Can’t wait for our next visit, see you very soon!!!

Had excellent fish and chips many times at this popular pub and has a good reputation. Today ordered the large fish and chips at £17.95 as usual and was presented with a meal that barely covered half the plate. If that was the large fish I would hate to see the normal size fish which was cheaper. 13 chips. Lady in charge very apologetic but the reason is reduced portion size due to the price of fish. Sadly won’t be returning.

Lovely setting and great to combine with a walk round Quarry bank. We booked in for Sunday lunch at 12, there were about 6 staff standing around ready for a busy lunch service. We ordered fairly quickly off the sunday lunch menu and children’s menu. the food took 50 minutes to arrive, which for a quiet pub was way longer than expected. The roasts were nice but the loaded fries my daughter had were poor with just a sprinkling of cheese and ham. Our cauliflower cheese side came ten minutes after our mains and looked anemic. we’d go back for drinks but not for food.

I did on walk into the Tapas bar thinking that you’re in the pub. The pub is further along the road.

So disappointed. A Mother’s Day meal totally ruined by awful service and bland cold food. When we arrived we were seated at a lovely table. Settled in, coats off, only to be told 5 mins later that we had to move. When questioned why I was told that they needed the table for a bigger party (6). When we were moved to our new table it was also for 6, so questioned again but was told she was just told to move us by management and she didn’t know why. NO-ONE sat at the original table the whole time we were there. Fine, not a massive deal. Ordered a roast as there wasn’t much else on menu… I have never had such a tasteless roast dinner in my life. And barely warm. Drowned in gravy (which isn’t normally a bad thing!) expect it was cold and tasteless. Lovely big Yorkshires yet again tasteless. I don’t know how they managed it. Room is so dark could hardly see meal. Asked for ketchup for kids meal… never came. Had to get up halfway through my meal to ask for it again. Asked for lime in my drink twice and it never came. I won’t be back, it’s really on the way down. I don’t care how much of an institution it has been - if it carries on like this they will lose all their business. I honestly don’t think they will care to hear this feedback as they never cared about us as customers the whole time we were there. they didn’t even ask why my meal was left mostly not eaten. If your face doesn’t fit, they will stick you in a corner and ignore you all night.

We visited "The Ship" last Sunday approx. 2pm. It was very busy, however a Waitress did find us a table within a few minutes. We got seated at our table and a young waitress came over within 5 minutes and took our drinks order. That's were the good prompt service ended! After waiting 20 minutes, and having to ask 2 different staff members about our drinks, eventually they arrived. Our food order was then taken at this point also. Roll on another 30 minute wait for our starters to arrive - I ordered the Port and Stilton Mushrooms, which were very very bland, and my Husband had the Chorizo Sausage, which was overcooked and slightly burnt. Our plates got cleared, after a few minutes and then we sat chatting whilst waiting for our main meals to arrive. Roll on another 30 minutes and eventually, again after having to ask twice what was happening, as others who had ordered after us got served before us - our meals arrived - however without any cutlery!! We didnt even get asked if we would like any sauces ie Mint Sauce etc. So then I asked a young waitress who was near our table for some cutlery and mint sauce. Waiting again another 5 minutes whilst our food is getting cold - and at this point I am getting more and more annoyed! I then walk over to where a male waiter was inputting meals onto a little computer, by the bar area - I asked for cutlery and explained we have been awaiting the waitress coming back for 5 minutes - to be told in a very rude manner , and I kid you not - we only have knives at the moment, you will have to wait for a fork!!! At this point I told him that the service we have been receiving is terrible and I asked if I could speak with the Manager. The Manager was very busy apparently - however he will go in the kitchen and find me a fork!! Main meals - my Husband ordered the Sticky Beef Korean noodles which he said was nice, and I ordered the Turkey Roast Sunday dinner - again nice, albeit if it was hotter. When it came to pay the bill, funnily enough we received this within minutes - strange that we waited an unacceptable amount of time for our drinks and food, but the bill was very prompt! Overall the service was totally shocking and I doubt we will visit again at a weekend. The pub/restaurant just could not cope with the amount of people coming through the doors. Instead of saying to people that they are full, or the food wait is an hour, they just kept letting people in, and at one point I counted 22 people queueing up at the bar to get drinks! Totally unacceptable.

So after a lovely walk around the woods I took my family to The Ship for a drink and some dinner. Avoid if you are vegetarian. I am local to the area and used to very much enjoy going to the Ship regularly. A few months ago I ordered a mushroom noodle dish, in my very last mouthful it had a small piece of crispy beef in the dish that I spat out. I’m a vegetarian and didn’t want to mention it to staff but was encouraged to by my partner who also confirmed it was beef. The waitress was apologetic and knocked the main off the bill. I was already embarrassed about having to say something but obviously annoyed about having had beef in my dish. A female manager came over and was very frosty and said ‘there is absolutely no way there could have been beef in that dish as we make the beef version in a separate part of the kitchen’. Disgusting customer service, it absolutely was beef and I still feel sick when I think about it 4 months later. Haven’t returned and won’t ever again.

Absolute shambles, and I cannot stress this enough. Possibly one of the worst pub experiences I have ever had and what a disappointment as this is such a lovely little pub. Arrived for our booking and were extremely shocked to see a large funeral party, all standing around, none adhering to social distancing and all helping themselves to a buffet, which is of course not permitted in current circumstances. We were a table of five, ordered our food at the bar as we were sat outside, we were advised that our food would take between 30 and 40 minutes which we were confused by anyway because, funeral aside, they weren’t that busy.Anyway, after around 50 minutes a lady, I’m guessing the manageress, asked if we wanted any sauces for our meals, zero apology for our wait nor did she let us know it was on its way, so we asked for our sauce and then continued to wait another 10 minutes... why offer us sauces if our food isn’t ready? Asked a member of staff how much longer it would be as we’d now waited over and hour and had received sauces 10 mins prior. During this time, a chef had leisurely walked across the garden for a cigarette, slowly walked back to the kitchen after 10 mins, absolutely no rush and a bit of a p*ss take whilst we’re waiting that long for food. Around another 5-10 minutes later our food started to come out, which only came with more disappointment. I’ll start with the good as it’s quick; tomato and basil soup was really, really nice and had a gorgeous pesto on top, loved it. Battered prawns were fab, the batter wasn’t too thick and they were nice and hot, the chilli sauce had a good little kick however there wasn’t enough if this. The side of gravy tasted good. So, the rest. The lazy fondue Camembert was so over done it had gone like lumpy custard, it was almost curdled, we sent this back, I assume this is what they’d been doing for the hour? The cheesy garlic bread (which came 10 minutes later than the rest of the food, because clearly they hadn’t had long enough for the rest of the order), has a sprinkling of cheese on top of a ciabatta with all butter no garlic. The fish and chips; chips were average at best and the batter was so, so soggy and flimsy, my friend picked some batter up and it was like a wet tissue. The ribs and wings were, as my friend said when it was placed in front of him, ‘so underwhelming’, if you order ribs and wings you expect it to be a big plate, you get two wings and a small rack of overcooked dried out ribs. The calamari was like chewing the sole of a shoe, tough, rubbery, and the sauce 90% oil to the point I could feel the separation of saliva and oil in my mouth after eating it. By the time someone checked to see how our food was we had all nearly finished and couldn’t be bothered after waiting so long and finally getting food. We received absolutely no apology from staff, no discount or drink although I imagine if they did this for all tables that waited an hour that day, they would be out of business as we overheard the same from a lot of tables, all staff were in a flap and had no idea what they were doing. In answer to the day old question of would we return, the answer is absolutely not. Train your staff, and for the love of god, please, PLEASE sort that car park out, it’s a joke!

Booked for 6 people, two days earlier, we said if weather permitting we would like to sit outside, we had never been there before, so didn’t know the lay out or what to expect, and on arrival a couple of grubby benches outside the front of pub which we thought was the outside seating. We went inside and was taken to a most depressing room I’ve ever been in dark wooden furniture, chair seats full of stains and a musky smell, waited an hour for the food to arrive, food not too bad, but what annoyed the most was there was a beautiful undercover seating area outside at the back, and the whole atmosphere was completely different, having booked well in advance, surely they could have shown us the alternative outside area, which looked like there was spare places.

This is probably the hardest review I’ve written to date. I actually like the pub, have taken into consideration the affects of the lockdown restrictions (so have ignored the fact that service is currently slow - 1 hour per course for our visit)but can’t ignore the food. In addition I also have to confess that the other members of the party chose food that was fine.So why have I rated the inn poor? Well it’s all about the food that I had. The starter (sourdough crumpet) was very soggy - but perhaps it’s supposed to be - but my main (Coronation Chicken salad) was really disappointing. There was plenty of chicken but, whilst coloured with a yellow sauce, was very dry. The salad was a plate full of lettuce and the coronation element was found underneath everything in the form of a small amount of source with nuts and currants (?)....and that was it.You could argue that I should have spoken up at the time but after the wait I was hungry and I just wanted to finish and go home.I’m not suggesting that you give this place a wide birth but just be careful in your choice of food (and take a jumper) since the current set up means that the door is open and there can be a pretty cool draft if your are in the wrong place.Sorry.

Small portion of turkey roast dinner, was described as pork, I think on reflection it was pork, not turkey as ordered, 1/2 of it left on the plate as all fatty and the rest too bland to ascertain as to what meat it actually was. Vegetables uninspiring and barely warm. Felt like I was eating a microwaved meal. Other 3 had uninspiring, though edible meals. Room freezing and front door left open, due to smoking fire. Did reluctantly remove cost of my meal. I will not be returning.

Unfortunately I have to say that The Ship has really gone downhill. It used to be great, but not any more. I met a friend for lunch today and, only wanting something light, I ordered the 'Mature Cheddar Cheese and Branston Pickle sandwich on white or granary bloomer with chips'.When the sandwich arrived it was on standard brown sliced bread (from the supermarket type bread), not even Granary. I very politely commented that this was not what I was expecting and it wasn't as stated on the menu. The server went to get someone from the kitchen. A somewhat stroppy person came, asking, "Is there a problem?" I explained that I had been expecting my sandwich to be made on bread sliced from a Granary cob loaf. She said that was their Granary cob bread.I tried to explain that it was normal processed sliced bread out of a plastic bag, but she wouldn't listen and insisted that this was their cob bread. I said bread from a cob loaf was usually sliced by hand and this wasn't that or even Granary bread. I ended up saying ok, as I didn't want to make a fuss or spoil our lunch, but did suggest the item should be amended on the menu to save any further disappointment. She seemed angry and her attitude was extremely poor.A week last Sunday we took friends to The Ship for a meal. My partner and I had the Sunday mixed roast, which looked impressive, but was in fact pretty tasteless. Our friends had the cod with leek spaghetti and, again, it was underwhelming. The room was freezing as the fire kept going out and we had to seek someone out on two occasions to ask them to relight it. The pub was quiet so they weren't inundated with people to serve. We wanted to order desserts and, as no-one had offered us a menu, we went to seek someone out, only to be told he thought desserts had finished. It wasn't late as we'd agreed to take our friends back to their airport hotel for 9.30pm, as they were flying out early the next morning. We were finally given a menu, only to be told there was none left of the two items we chose. We gave up.This is all such a shame as the Ship is on my doorstep and we used to love it, often recommending it to others. We won't be doing that again and will have to travel further afield in future.

This pub has really gone down, service was bad, ordered drinks, which took 20 mins after having to go to the bar to ask where the drinks were, food ok not cheap for a pub ,overall the experience wasn't good, asked for drinks again and waited and when they came was told we don't normally do bar service in the restaurant which we found strange as most people want to have a drink with their meal!! after waiting a while again no one came and asked if we wanted a dessert so again had to go to the bar and ask for the bill and told the manager about the service ,he came back and said he'd knocked of the drinks,we paid and left and when we got home we looked at the bill and they had knocked 1 beer, and 1 bottle of wine but not a glass of wine we had ,will not be visiting again and I agree with another review they seem to bother more with the locals ,staff young which is no problem if trained well ,which comes down to management.

The menu looked wonderful on line but in reality the food was average at best. The serving staff were miserable and not friendly at all. My husband’s chicken curry was bland and he hardly touched it. The manager did, however, take it off our final bill which was something. We shan’t be returning.

We visited twice over Christmas, one satisfactory, the other poor. The wild boar (pork) stroganoff and our companions food was decent enough on the first visit. On the second, not so good at all. The 'monk fish' scampi was OK but was cod. I mentioned this to the waitress but she just looked totally stupified. Enough said. My son's burger had to be returned to the kitchen as completely raw inside and my fish and chips appeared nothing like the picture of the crispy, lightly browned confection on the website.....a very greasy, scrappy bit of poor quality fish and a sort of pea soup for £13.95. The beer was excellent on both occasions. I think I'll go somewhere else in future...

Be sure to visit the Ship Inn! A proper pub with a good selection of drinks and great food. The menu will pleasantly surprise you; not only is the selection diverse enough to cater for all tastes but the quality is excellent. I didn’t have the self restraint to leave anything on my plate - the food really is that good!It gets very busy, very quickly so be sure to book (if you’re a party of 4 or more). They don’t accept bookings from smaller parties but do leave tables unreserved to cater for these numbers; that said, don’t be surprised if you’re turned away during peak days/times because this pub is very popular and will fill up quickly. It’s reputation speaks for itself.A great pub and definitely one of my favourites!

We decided to meet friends here for a catch up for Christmas, whilst it’s portrayed as a country pub it’s the most unwelcoming I’ve ever been in . Whilst the pub is unique it’s not exclusive and I certainly wouldn’t want it as my local . The staff were very rude and basically to busy serving locals . We had drinks and there was a good choice but equally expensive. We were going to all eat there but really were happy with the unfriendly atmosphere the pub has . The food that was coming out to the table at the side of us they’re words was it was ok if you like a plate full of dry Yorkshire puddings. We asked where they would advise for food and they told us The Tatton arms down the road a wonderful little find and it was all outstanding and friendly. Don’t be fooled by the fact the pub is in a pretty setting it’s still round the corner from Wythenshawe and the Tatton arms is definitely a 5star establishment in Wythenshawe and definitely worth a visit .

Although I have had this before, I have to say that our meals today were indeed exceptional... the vegetables were done to perfection and my brother was blown away by the experience. They eat out more frequently than we, but he says he has never had a roast like today, and it that it was truly amazing...the flavour of the lamb, the gravy was beautiful and your staff are a credit to The Ship... Thank you for making this a great experience for my brother.Would very much recommend

Went to the Ship Inn with wife and friends on the 24th for a small get together lunch before Christmas, was very disappointed with the service, long waits to order food and drinks then again long waits for drinks and food to be brought! Although 3 out of 4 of us enjoyed the food although one meal was delayed due to forgot to cook the fries!!! 1 x Fish and Chips, 1 x Moroccan Style kebab, 1 x Ribs and Wings & 1 x Cod loin.. All meals nice apart frok the cod loin which was heavily doused in oil and garlic and took flavour away from anything else on the plate..The pub looked very busy for a Monday 2pm so wonder if this had an effect on the above. Its a friendly country pub we enjoy visiting too and will visit again soon..

Lovely pub worth a visit but I was disappointed with my meal so I will give it another chance in the New Year – I had the lamb kebab (large meal) which was 2 skewers with lamb mince but fairly small portions, bit of rocket with about 4 cubes of feta, some olives and 2 pieces of pitta bread and very small pot of tzatziki – it was expensive for what it was and something I wouldn’t order again, quite dry and boring – maybe it’s just because it’s Christmas and they had lots of people in, the car parking was also a bit of a nightmare as people just parked their cars anywhere there was a space and it would be useful for it to be all marked off – it’s a quaint pub though with small rooms and quite cosy but for me this time not a good meal.

Where to start? We love the Ship at Styal. Summer or Winter, it's an warm and welcoming place to eat or grab a drink. The staff couldn't be more helpful, especially Gareth who has made our every family visit a pleasure. Our last meal was Sunday lunch which my partner and I both enjoyed whilst my son indulged his love of sausages. The food is tasty, interesting and there is a great children's menu (plus colouring and pens to keep then busy). The inn itself is an lovely old coaching inn with a cosy atmosphere and real fires when it's cold. If you eat too much then there are some amazing around Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Woods opposite.

When I asked for hot water in a cup I was looked at as though I had 3 heads! I was told “we don’t have cups”. “Do you serve tea & coffee?” I asked, then got the hot water in a cup - bizarre! When the food arrived it was plonked down in front of us. As a positive, they serve decent beer and the wait for food was not too long and quite decent. Would I go there again? No.

Called in late afternoon after a visit to Styal Mill and immediately recognised the range of beer available. I then remembered the link to the Dog at Peover, a great pub that I've not visited for a while. This is a big pub with plenty of rooms and we found a seat in a corner near the bar. It was quite dark but there was some atmosphere with a few at the bar and people dotted around. We both enjoyed a pint of Timothy Taylor's Boltmaker. TT's Landlord is surely one of the nation's favourite ales but Boltmaker is also excellent. The barman left a bit of a 'collar' on the pints but sometime you can't be bothered to ask for a top up. In Yorkshire, where this is brewed, they definitely would.

Visited here whilst staying at the near by bamford lodge (5 min walk down the road) the ship inn came highly recommended by the lodge and others who had stayed there. Our party of three was welcomed and the place had a lovely cosy feel, my favourite type of pub. We first sat outside and had a couple of drinks in the beautiful beer garden which is clean and well maintained, perfect on a summers evening with plenty of tables and heat lights which we didn’t need to use as it was a warm evening. We chose to eat indoors as the place has real character especially Pat the regular she is lovely to chat to and a very interesting funny lady would love for the staff if you see this to tell her hello from the girls from Grimsby :) We all had a mixture of starters and mains although there was only three of us the menu choice was excellent and too hard to choose just one so I opted for three starters and the others had a mix of starters and mains. I can’t complain about a thing it was all delicious especially the sausage in garlic and a wine sauce this was my favourite absolutely spot on and nothing needed seasoning. Other dishes we chose included garlic prawns, ham hock terrine, seafood sharing platter, halloumi kebabs and Moroccan lamb kebab. All our meals were delicious and beautifully presented , when in the area I can’t recommend trying this place enough really great vibe and amazing food

Took my wife and sister-in-law for Saturday lunch and although the place was busy we managed to get a table. Great selection in beers was the first thing I noticed. We all went for the fish and chips and have to say that both the fish and the chips were very good. Indeed, for the food I would mark it as Very Good but the place seemed to be let down by one or two of the staff, who did not come across as very friendly at all, and did not seem to subscribe to 'customer awareness'. Perhaps we just got them on a bad day!

No volveré. También no es una buena opción de cerveza.

I had reviewed this place a while back but it seems as tho it has been removed and we can't be having that.I'm a 25 year old male who lives in Styal village. My friends and I often enjoyed a good few pints in the Ship Inn. To find our their had been noise complaints and even bad language used one evening I can only apologise for, but banning a loyal customer like myself I can't get my head around. I'd like to think the bar staff would back me up here but I have always been polite and I always treat people with the same respect I would want to receive. Firstly the landlady Kat is brilliant I don't have a bad word to say about her what so ever she runs a great pub and knows exactly what she's doing. Same goes for 'most' bar staff including Rachael, Jess, Riri, Jasmine.I have however been on the other end of the spectrum treated like a criminal by incompetent untrained staff, I got accused of stealing a bottle of San Bucca on the night I believe I was banned. In fact the member of staff in this case misplaced the bottle and didn't even apologise of accusing me of a thief, I found this highly unacceptable. I was in again the following day eating my way through the menu and no one batted an eyelid it wasn't until my father was in the pub on the Monday evening did staff tell him his son has been barred (did no-one have the bottle to tell me myself?) My point is you don't ban a loyal customer from a place they often visit with their families for being 'boisterous'. I feel highly embarrassed about the whole situation and I have asked on numerous occasions for the owner Simon to give me call to discuss the matter.Obviously he hasn't called which doesn't surprise me and to be brutally honest if your just after drinks this certainly isn't the place. Even if I were allowed back in I can honestly say I wouldn't bother which is a massive statement and such a shame as I get on well with most the regulars. As mentioned if your just after drinks give this place a miss to avoid disappointment. Thanks
