Well what a find! I always read reviews before I eat anywhere and the reviews for the Ship Inn were excellent and so I was looking forward to trying it. The menu was imaginative and well thought out, not just your standard pub grub. There was plenty of fresh fish on offer which is what you want in a place like Porthleven. My husband chose Red Mullet , his favorite fish. Beautifully cooked and presented on a fresh celeriac salad, stunning dish. I had the roasted corgette, another beautiful dish, so tasty! We will definitely make a special journey down to Porthleven just to eat there again. A little word about the staff . . . Fantastic!!!

Visited at lunch time. My friends ordered food first. When I went to the bar and asked what could they offer me gluten free they said "nothing" when I said I was coeliac. They couldn't even make me a coffee to drink whilst my friends ate their food. Do not go here for food if you are coeliac. I don't mind apart from the fact that reviews say they offer gluten free options which are clearly not true

The Ship is a proper pub on the edge of Porthleven’s picturesque harbour. We visited for dinner with our 3 dogs and were made very welcome. Our food was superb. Hubby had fish and chips and I had the fish pie. Both were piping hot and utterly delicious. The decor is wonderful and worth popping in just to see. Couple that with a roaring fire and a great pint of cider, what more could you ask for on a cold January evening. Perfect!

What a lovely establishment this is. Full of history and character (being built in the 1660's I was informed) and a superb, welcoming and knowledgeable barmaid who hailed from Brecon (I sadly did not obtain her name) I throughly enjoyed my pint here. Sadly the portion of Ham hock pie was tiny, with an inch, if that of gravy. The fish pie was lacking in flavour, and fish to be fair. Lots of money for what it was. The condiment box, was filthy. Both salt and pepper were empty, and covered in mustard or something. When we asked for salt and pepper and said why, a young server came over and didn't even to bother asking us how are food was. Had I the chance, I would have said all of this to him. The bar was busy when we left, and wasn't the right place to air our concerns.

Visited The Ship Wednesday evening as a family with our 4 dogs. We sat outside in a covered area with heating, checking with the one local in there that they didn’t mind us there with our dogs. Went inside to order and it was buzzing, a real locals pub. A couple of other locals came into the area that we were sitting in and they couldn’t have been more accommodating in the fact our dogs were there. Food was good, ham hock pie a definite hit, along with the burger too. Myself and DIL had the red onion and beetroot tart, which was really nice. The only gripe was that the chef had grated a little orange zest on top of it, which we didn’t really like - but once scraped off the tart was fabulous. Lovely pub, definitely recommend going there.

We had one night overnight in Porthlevan and the ship was recommended by a friend. We went at 5:30 and the the bar was heaving! We found a table in the adjoining ´smithy’ which is an overflow area for food. I ordered fish and chips and the food that came was not good. HOWEVER, the customer service that followed was exceptional. My food was quickly replaced along with a complimentary very large glass of wine. The lady (who I suspect is the manager) checked in on us regularly. At around 7pm the bar thinned out and we got a table. Roaring fire, fantastic atmospheric and great wine. What else do you need?

Hello everyone. Well this public house has always been a mystery to me, never had the opportunity to spend time to visit. It was worth waiting for. The location is amazing. On the quayside with amazing coastline views and the atmosphere with many locals and visitors was so welcoming. The decorations in the pub were authentic and the hospitality also genuinely friendly and welcoming. Great variety of local beers and beverages. The bar area was I'd say Very traditional and compact yet cosy. The food was extremely tasty mine being the Harrisan Sole. Please chef never alter this recipe or presentation. So tasty. The rest of the team had Mackerel, also finished their plates. We were catching up with old friends and joinded in with the pub quizz. Really good host and entertaining. The only small gripe I had was that we sat in the far corner with a lovely view of the entire pub and kitchen and Sadly the smell of cigarette smoke was quite strong. Maybe a temporary ventilation issue. Didn't affect my score but with the eating of such tasty delicate delicious fish, it did mar the experience a little. Please enjoy the photos and videos attached. I would highly recommend any to visit this Cornish Gem. A local to Cornwall !

Brilliant old pub with loads of character. The food was excellent with friendly and helpful staff. I have seen a couple of reviews complaining about dogs and the range of food on the menu, if you're that sort of person maybe try a chain pub where you have a choice of fifty microwave dishes and no atmosphere is a better bet and if it says 'DOG FRIENDLY ' not to be surprised if you see a dog or two.

Me and the wife walked down to Porthleven and decided to drop in here on a whim and so glad we did. The main part of the pub has a quaint old timey feel to it with currency of all dates and locations on the wall and lots of beer mats on the ceiling. Plenty of seating outside with lovely views of the harbour and the sea. The smithy area looked nice too. Dogs are welcome here and although one of the recent reviews said about dogs barking this wasn’t the case and it’s lovely to see all the dogs. We had the fish and chips with mint and garlic peas. The wife had curry sauce and I the tartar sauce both of which were lovely the chips and peas were fantastic and the fish was superb. As Porthleven is a nice little scenic town it was nice to sit and watch it all from our bench. The staff were friendly and helpful which is always good. We will definitely eat here again next time we are in the area.

When we are in Porthleven, the Ship Inn is the first place we go. It is in a fantastic location at the mouth of the harbour and the views from all the windows are superb. It is always popular with a great atmosphere but the large number of various sized tables mean there is rarely a wait to sit down. The food menu has a limited selection but there is something for everyone - the food is freshly prepared and tastes great. The pub team members are friendly and welcoming, notably manager Beth, and Caitlin - both of who take an interest in their customers and make time for a chat even when it is busy, while rarely pausing for a break. The constantly changing selection of beers includes popular and less well known local brews, and there is something new to try at every visit. The Ship is a firm favourite of our family, offering a great atmosphere, traditional and attractive location and great service from the best bar team in Cornwall - strongly recommended for a visit.

I have to admit that I am not the person that comments on anything and everything, nor do I ever right a review of my experience. If I am unsatisfied with the experience, I just won't return again. But ... I have been seeing the Development of this establishment for that past 20 years and treated myself quite often to a night or two in any of the corner or best suites ( highly recommend those ) and enjoyed the ambiance and service this hotel had to offer. Our experience: Arrival to the hotel : We planned to have drinks prior to our meal. Found the bar area as busy as usual. With no free seats in sight, I ask the Brasserie manager if we could order drinks in the main lounge, whereas we been told that there normally is service but he has no clue what they doing today. Not answer I was hoping for. The entrance to the main lounge also been blocked off for some reason. Luckily the wait at bar was sufficient enough to pass the time for a table to become vacant. In previous visits, a relaxed table service was offered but not this time for some reason . Guess it’s an informal 5 star service.. , had to ask for bar menus as neither been on the bar or tables to see what’s on offer. ( also no usual complimentary nuts that used to be offered ) Restaurant We arrived early to our Booking at the samphire and were delighted to be able to be seated, unfortunately without any menus. It took about 10-15 min of us staring holes into the warm air, when I lost my patients and had to get up from the table to ask for menus at the entrance of the Restaurant. Yet again it took quite a while for us to order drinks and food as it seemed to be a chaotic service with everyone doing everything and no restaurant Manager nor head waiter in sight ( please note.. all evening ) . The lack of attention to detail was incredible .. table settings with knives to left and forks to right on every table .. just wow - giggle Food and drinks order done. ( ordered a glass of white wine with my mains, which never arrived ).. Drinks arrived what seamed ages. Overheard table next to us complaining about the slow service too, which been given a small apology but no solution to increase the speed of service ( yet again a lack of management ) Noticed the young waiter being unfamiliar on how to correctly present a bottle of wine and opening it, which I thought should be a training standard for a 5 star establishment. not only did he seem untrained, he also dried his hands in a used napkin left on the table next to him where diners just left. The pork belly starter , was below luke warm which was shame as its been rather tasty. I guess if a portion of this size is sitting on a kitchen pass for mere 3 min, it naturally will loose its core temperature, suggestion.. Next time use a cloche! I wanted to point this out to the service but yet again no manager or headwaiter to be seen and the waiters seem too busy to be bothered. Once they did ask if everything is alright, but by that time we finished what we had on the plate ( which is not a lot if you are hungry ) Unfortunately the main course of the hen and the monk fish not been any better and yet again being luke warm. Dessert of the frangipane tart and pineapple been ok, but yet again no attention to detail, as the dessert been bought out without cutlery being replenished prior. Ordered coffee to be served in the lounge, which arrived with no sugar or spoon and had to be asked for separately. When I paid my bill, I mentioned that the wine I ordered with my main course never arrived. No apology was offered.. A "informal fine Dining " experience. 95% informal - 5 % fine Dining. :-( Over the past 20 years I always chose the Headland hotel for its perfection, attention to detail and impeccable service, this time it's not delivered to its promise which is a shame cause that's what I will remember.. Coming from a 4 to a 5 star .. I expected more ( go back to 4 stars !!! You been better then
