Popped in here as the Google reviews said there was a fire. Was not disappointed! Great fire and we were lucky to find a seat right by it! But there are very few chairs by the fire. Music was very loud and a bit heavy rock for me.

After lockdowns etc it was nice to venture out on a Sunday evening around the pubs in Keynsham without restrictions.. We started at a busy New Inn the view from the balcony had the Ship in our views. On entering there were only 3 people inside who were making selections on the juke box sadly no audience. We ventured outside into the rear garden passing a large rowdy group by the door..As we sat at one of the benches the whole area reminded me of no mans land.. The atmosphere was loud and contemptuous..where as before it was always bustling with a positive vibe.. No longer had we arrived we were off.. Within a five minute walk we were at The Bonzo lounge, which was a refreshing change with its pleasant surroundings.. The once cosy local warmth of the ships open fire had long gone out which was a real shame to see..

Was always a great local boozer, in recent years had a change of ownership which took the pub on a very different direction. Completely stopped using it. It has new owners again now that have taken it back to its roots. Proper pub, great beer selection. Old and cosy in one side. More of a pub bar in the other. Small old pub. Good beer selection. Good for pints and chats. Unsure if food ever came back.

Forgive the intended pun in the title but my conscience obliges me to write this review. I had been here before and it was totally the pits. This time I visited to play in a sports tournament and was astounded at the change for the better. Every facet has improved immeasurably, especially the service, staff attitude, and (best of all) the food. I wasn't too thrilled to have to go there but I am glad I did. They deserve every success. It really was very good and bears no comparison with how it used to be. I will willingly return.

Won’t be rushing back here. Service was diabolical. Girl behind bar had a mouth like a sewer language was vile. Drinks being served in wrong glasses. Therefore flat lager. Waited about ten minutes to be served whilst staff were too busy just chatting between themselves. When I had been served the bar Worker disappeared so waited another ten min or so to pay for the drinks. Later on the only bonus was the fact that one of the workers was so embarrassed by the beer being flat that he wasn’t charging people for it!!!!!!! Anyway after all this it’s clear to say I WONT be rushing back!

4of us let this place bed in after reopening to visit for lunch.previous distinctive wooden furniture has been removed and replaced with tables and chairs which would look more appropriate in your garden.they were uncomfortable and created a canteen feeling.2of us ordered pies from the additional menu promoting them on the tables.Pies were off, unlike the menu advertising them.bacon and cheese burger arrived without cheese, rectified,no forks available food was acceptable but tepid.2beer drinkers had poor cloudy beer, the later ordered originally wouldn't pour to lively. We left to continue our trip elsewhere. So on reflection this pub has fallen at every fence.

Booked a table for 8 people for a Saturday evening wanting to try somewhere new having read the reviews. We arrived on time and had to wait while they got our table ready, no menues were provided, ordered meals then were told some meals were unavailable, 7 meals arrived one missing which came when others were almost finished waitress dropped sauce over one of the party no napkins were available and something that looked like toilet roll arrived, ordered desserts once again not all available, desserts arrived and the young man bringing them stood at the end of the table smirked at us and looked blank and said cake, with such a limited range we were shocked he couldn't remember what he was serving us, some of the orders were wrong not what we had ordered but by this time we ate up and got out as quick as possible. never had such poor service before and it ruined what should have been a nice evening

Stopped in here on Saturday night, initially only for one as me and the work mates were planning on heading into town but upon walking into the bar we were greeted by the music of a great band and to be fair plenty of ale to choose from even with a few pumps being off. Considering how many people were in i was genuinely surprised at how great the atmosphere was it was just a load of people enjoying the night and everyone was really friendly and welcoming, sadly not many pubs like that anymore. It was really nice. The staff were very friendly considering how busy it was, they all let you know that you were waiting which i always appreciate and all in all it really was great service and i cant complain, would definitely come back again and again quite happily. we stayed until time and have to say were rather worse for wear when we left but thanks to the guys there for a great night and some excellent beer!

In September 2014 I gave 5 stars. My wife and I went there 3 weeks ago for an evening meal and we thought it had gone unbelievably downhill. We were directed to the upstairs dining area where we were given menus, told our order would be taken and sat for 15 minutes with no sign of the waitress in either our area or the dining area below. I went down to the bar and the barman had to summon the waitress to take our order. We then waited another 40 minutes with again no sign of the waitress in either our area or downstairs, where I had noted 14 people ahead of us waiting to be served. We went down to the bar and cancelled at which time I noted the first of the 14 meals being served. How much longer would we have had to wait. We weren't asked why we were cancelling so I assume they guessed. The menu, a one sided photocopied A4 sheet of paper (previously it was a professional printed menu) had only 6 main meals: 2 pizzas, 2 pies, ham and egg or sausage and egg with no choice of veg. Just chips and peas with everything. Add on that the upstairs dining area, empty apart from us, was being used as a storage room with the adjacent table and chairs having banners, posters and metal stands piled on them, had only one light on the far wall as illumination so was dismal and, all round, in our opinion, it was very poor.

I often drink in the Ship Inn, but haven’t eaten here for many years, so with a new menu and it being half term we visited one evening with the children. The restaurant area isn’t particularly big, but they do take reservations. The menu is pretty standard, with Steaks, Pie’s, Lasagne etc., but prices are more than reasonable. They don’t have a children’s menu, but were more than willing to adapt and offer half portions of any of the mains. The Friday we visited they also had a fish specials menu on offer with a starter and main for £10. Happy for us to split that, so our son had the starter of two large fish goujons with salad (and pinched some chips from mum and dad) as his main and my wife had the homemade mackerel fishcakes. Our daughter had a half size portion of the Scampi, which she said was really nice. I opted for the Steak Burger. We didn’t have too long a wait for the food, but then we were first people in the restaurant area. All of our food was lovely, although I can’t see what extra value serving my burger on a wooden board gives. All the others were on normal plates, so why a board for the burger? But the burger was tasty so didn't have to fret about the board to much (no pun intended). The pudding choice isn’t extensive, but we all enjoyed ours and again, really good and adaptable for the children. Only minor moans, I would have liked more coleslaw with my burger and less balsamic vinegar on all of our side salads.

Apologies to 'strictly'Our credit card company offered rewards to shop, buy, and eat local.I chose to eat here. Rang Friday afternoon and confirmed a £5 main course deal and £2 extra for second course. Asked if it applied Saturday and reassured it was. I asked if I needed to book for Saturday and confirmed no it would be all right if coming in the afternoon.Turned up just before 3 pm and the restaurant was completely empty so we walked in. I saw a young girl wandering around and not knowing if she was staff asked if where we could sit and she shrugged her shoulders and raised her arms and said she did not care.I thought she must then be a customer but persisted and asked if there wjhere any menus. She then caught on and shuffled through a load and said no they were all for last Sundays lunch! [eh!]I tried again and mentioned the 'meal deals' She said they did not do them and no idea what I was talking about.I again persisted and she went off. Meanwhile I thought I must be in the wrong place. She came back with the right meanus on a meal deal saying she did not know still then took them away again as the deal time was over? Main menu only now.We left but not before asking if in an empty restaurnat they were not willing to still do that menu. Definitely NOT it seems.

Have just returned from a lovely evening at The Ship in Keynsham. From the moment we group of 10 friends arrived, we were made to feel so at home when the young lady who later waited on us introduced herself with a warm welcoming smile and gave us her name ( a nice touch without being corny). The atmosphere in this lovely old inn is really excellent and the food we had was equally so. Half of us ordered steaks, cooked anywhere from rare to medium-well and all said afterwards that they were cooked to perfection. The food is obviously home made and the chef (Chris I believe he was called) should take great credit for the job he is doing as he's VERY good at it.The prices are very reasonable too.....As is the wine. The 10 of us left vowing to return ...and we will! Our thanks to all the staff, including the bar staff, who made it such a lovely evening for us.

There was a lovely roaring log fire burning and a warmer reception we could not have expected. The small bar area was full but behind that area is a quite large dining room. The food is served quickly and its presentation and quality was very good, so were the prices (I used my Tastecard as well). The staff were all very friendly and I can thoroughly recommend The Ship for a very satisfying eating experience in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Went here for a lunch with some work colleagues. The menu had changed since our last visit and they no longer had the same range of lunch type things. When we asked for the menus we were told that there were "only 2 jacket potatoes left" which was a bit strange as was 1240 on a Friday lunchtime - but maybe they'd had a rush on the spuds...We ordered - 3 people had a different baguettes and chips, one had fish & Chips and a ham eggs and chips. The food took quite a lot longer than we had hoped think it was going on for 30 minutes and it wasn't busy by any means. I'd finished my pint of Thatchers gold by the time it arrived!Food was okay - salad leaves rather withered - a handful of chips with baguette but for the money £5.25 was just about okay. Ham was thickly sliced with 2 eggs and fish was nice batter crispy so I was told..Not as good as previous times we've visited though.Overall we were a tad disappointed, I'd say they need to up their game as there are now a number of places in Keynsham to eat which are taking their business away. Think next time we'll be trying somewhere else - which is a shame.

I had the fish and my colleague and the Cajun chicken what can I say - this was no ordinary fish burger! We both had a soft drink and the bill was £13!! This food was food as a fine dining restaurant and the service was second to none! Went for a mid-week meal with a friend, restaurant very small, only 5 tables and very close together so you can hear everyone else's conversation. Quite good choice on menu. I had Salmon fillet in Hollandaise sauce with boiled potatoes and seasonal veg. The salmon fillet was quite small, a very small amount of sauce on it, tepid vegetables and new potatoes. It was very dry and could have done with more sauce or some butter for the potatoes and at £13.95 I thought it was over-priced. My friend had penne pasta with salmon and that tasted lovely and was quite a large portion. The bread roll that accompanied it was supposed to be a ciabatta roll but it looked like the rolls that you buy frozen and put in the oven. Again no butter supplied. I think garlic bread would probably have gone better with this. Staff were very friendly and although there was quite a wait for our food the waitress did come to tell us. Drinks were fine but all in all I thought food was over-priced. They are charging restaurant prices for bar food. I probably would not go there again.

We keep going back when we want a pub meal, despite the 5 miles to travel with other closer pubs. The beer is well kept and not overpriced, from breweries in the Marston chain, and the bar staff don't mind you having a taster if you're not sure which to have. We can't fault the food and I especially love the thick, proper, "stand your spoon up in it" gravy that comes with the steak and kidney suet pudding. Portions are large and the 2 meals for £12.99 with the 20% voucher for the next visit add up to really good value. We are just waiting for the open log fire to be lit in the bar when it gets colder and, what with it being one of the oldest buildings in Keynsham and looking like it, it will be the perfect English pub atmosphere. The dining room is pleasant but does feel a bit lacking in atmosphere and remote if it's just the two of us and happens to be fairly empty, but we've taken a family group there and it's felt fine. Nice pub, good beer and good food.

First impressions... Great classic pub, fantastic garden and quaint decor... Then I ordered a drink which was served to me with a smile and knowledge of the wines on offer. When I ordered my food, I was worried that it wasn't going to be as good as my local in the centre of town, but boy was I wrong. It was just as good. We were recommended this "ale house" by relatives so decided to give it a go. We arrived and asked if there was a table for 2. The response was "have you booked". Our response "no" to which we were taken into an empty restuartant. My wife was a little put off but i said give it time. The waiter came over and said he would be with us shortly but he had to replenish the salt/pepper etc on the tables. That made me think. The positives - the ale was well kept. The food - well not sure if I am being generous in saying it was average as I have reviewed better places as "average" but feel it may have been unfair going lower. Would not visit again if visitng the relatives in Keynsham.

We got there, it was cold outside so we popped in for a hot chocolate and a bite to eat. The hot chocolate was the best I've ever tasted as was the burton ale my partner had. Food was great value. We had two meals of the £12.99 menu. Lots of scampi, around 20 pieces! The pie was from pieminister (a bits to company I'm told. Great staff, we even left a healthy tip!

I am a local person who lives in Keynsham and wish to use local businesses, however the attitude of the landlord is absolutely disgusting and he has no apparent people skills which is usually needed for a 'public house' there was no justification for the way he spoke to myself and my friends and those that witnessed the incident were appalled and made comment.. Very disappointed.

What you get here is good value food in a traditional pub setting. Great beer garden on a sunny afternoon backs onto a park. Interior is dated but that's all part of the atmosphere. Varied and extensive menu, I had steak and my colleague had pork belly which looked great and game with mashed potato and a leek and cream sauce... Would I take my wife here for a romantic special meal, no... But it is a great traditional pub with good honest food and a good range of ale...

Whether a resident in Keynsham or a visitor, try and make time for a visit to The Ship.A warm welcome is assured and there is a fine range of real ales on offer.A reasonably-priced menu is available and the quality of the food is very good.In the event of a rare sunny day, there is also an excellent quirky garden which leads down to the river!

On 30th June i posted a critical report of a Sunday lunch we had at the Ship.We have since had the opportunity to meet with the Landlord, who is very charming, pleasant and personable young man. He is also very hardworking, and is succeeding in running an excellent real ale pub and restaurant. As he pointed out to us, sometimes, someone may be unlucky enough to have the " 79th pint out of the barrel " and this also relates to our meal that day, and we were just unlucky, which i accept.Of course we will eat there again, and if you haven't tried it , please do, if only to soak up the atmosphere with the friendly locals and the real ales.

We have just had sunday lunch at the ship. This was the first sunday lunch although we have had two restaurant meals here in past three months. These were just passable, but we have rarely had a Sunday lunch anywhere as bad as this. The Beef was like leather, roast potatoes totally burnt that you could not cut them, and the strangest array of vegetables ever, sliced carrots and red cabbage. We drink here quite regularly, and there are never enough bar staff, so if the Landlord wants to stop the decline in this pub, he should sack the chef, change his meat supplier, and take on more staff. He could of course actually do some work himself, as he is never to b seen.If not, i can see this becoming another statistic of pubs closing down.

We've been twice now. On our first visit, everything was superb except that my steak hadn't been seared and had an odd, under-cooked quality to it. But the starter and the home-made cheesecake to finish were so superb that they just about made up for it, and the service was very good too.On our second visit, absolutely everything was top-notch from start to finish, whilst the generous slice of home-made rum and raisin cheesecake was the best I've ever had. Again, the service was very good, even though they were pretty busy, on the ground floor at least. Our neighbours had steak which, this time, looked properly cooked and they declared it to be very good.So we shall definitely return.

We booked for family and friends on a Sunday, it was for a post christening do so we were a big group including kids. We were able to reserve an upstairs space which worked really well and the kids could run around up there without causing any problems to anyone else. I pre-ordered for everyone as a buffet style Sunday lunch which was fantastic and a very social way of doing it having all the food in the middle for everyone to help themselves, and the portions were very generous with more than anyone could eat, plus the staff even checked that we did not want anymore of anything. With the drinks as well it was done for a very reasonable price so I would definitely recommend that way of doing it if you are in a group and don't mind all eating the same thing (we went for the roast chicken for everyone). Overall the value was fantastic, the food and service also really good.

My husband and I booked a table at the Ship Inn on a Saturday evening. When we arrived we had trouble squeezing into the pub as was heaving and full of locals, nice atmosphere and a change to see a pub so busy. We were hoping to eat at one of the tables at the back of the pub (like a snug) but was full so were seated in their "restaurant area". To be honest it was awful, like an after thought with a mismatch of furniture, bright lights and absolutely no atmosphere. Menu was very limited and we ordered starter and main course - food was ok but nothing special. I also opted to have a dessert, should really have bothered as was still frozen. The best part of our experience at the Ship Inn was the waitress service who was very friendly and extremely helpful. Not a pub we will visit again to eat but if passing will pop in for a drink.

Eight of us went to the Ship in for evening meal. I had booked the table several weeks ago and was told to arrive at 7.30 or before as they had table for 16 booked in for 8pm. The Inn was completely full so we were very surprised to be told by one of the waiting staff that there were only 2 of them to serve everyone and the poor things were running around all night trying to keep everyone happy. They were getting very flustered which was not surprising. They obviously knew it was going to be a busy night so why hadn't they brought in more staff. Lovely old inn with good food, shame about the service.
