Ship & Bell in East Hampshire

Had a great lunch for three of us yesterday. The steak I had was really good for a pub offering and the others liked their fish and chips and burger. The service was excellent (well done Dillon) and we will go back again.

We came here as a family for lunch on a Sunday. The food was lovely with good size portions, the price was good and the staff were lovely. We will definitely go back.

Delicious Sunday home cooked roast lunch with all the trimmings including stuffing and cauliflower cheese. Generous portions. Excellent chocolate mousse for dessert. Definately would recommend. Excellent service.

Popped in while staying at the nearby Premier Inn. Had some lovely food and real ale. Nice welcoming pub with very nice food. So much so that we went back the following night before heading home.

Stopped here for the good old HSB pint and had the tastiest lunch. The Belly pork starters are to die for. 3 of us had different meals which were all very tasty. We met the bar manager who gave us a run down of the history, the chef came out to chat and told us everything is homemade by himself. We wish you all the very best for the future we will be back

Me and my friends always have a catch up over lunch once a month we are an older bunch. And we wanted to try somewhere new we knew that The Ship And Bell Horndean had been taken over and gave it a go. You can clearly see that the place has been done up and the bar team where amazing there was a young man and a young woman working Friday 23rd February they was very welcoming and polite and helpful the whole time we was there. We will definitely be going back. Thank you again to the two amazing bar staff.

Tried the new lunch special menu. Excellent value, super tasty and plentiful all for £6.95. I had the chilli which was lovely and my partner had the ham,egg and chips. The chips were super nice. The pub was clean and well presented and staff very welcoming. Will definitely be returning.

Impromptu lunch in a lovely clean and well presented pub, polite and efficient staff. I had fish and chips, partner had the Cumberland sausages with truffle mash. Both were ample portions and tasty.

Dropped in with my wife for a coffee. After 2 attempts to get the correct coffee it was cold and tasted odd. I'm not sure whether the bar tender knew how to use the machine. Maybe training required. Disappointed as had a nice coffee there once before.

Decided to stop here for a spot of lunch after visiting another local shop. Big mistake! We ordered the southern fried chicken burger and philly cheese steak sub. A while after paying for the food, we were then told there was no chicken on the premises. The menu board boasts "locally sourced ingredients". There is a Morrisons just up the road! I therefore ordered the ribs with chunky fries. When our food arrived, my plate seemed plentiful however, my husband was a bit disappointed with the size of the "sub". It was very small. The philly cheese was non existent - only steak, mustard and ketchup. Both the skinny fries and the chunky chips were the frozen variety, deep fried. Basically, a crispy shell with no insides. My ribs were completely inedible. I could not even cut them with a knife, let alone chew them. They were bone dry and rock solid. I would not even have fed these to my dogs. Do not bother wasting your time here. We would have been more satisfied putting the money in the middle of the table, setting fire to it and watching it burn. At no point did any of the staff come over and ask how was our food. We would have them had they asked. My advice is go next door to 4 London Road. We went there last night and it was delicious!

Fantastic service and great food. The staff member on duty (only a Thursday afternoon, so not surprised to see just one person manning the bar) was friendly, as well as knowledgable regarding the menu and ales. I had fish and chips, along with a portion of “Frickles” (fried pickles) which were surprisingly good! I’m very glad to see this strong turnaround for what is now our local pub. Will absolutely be visiting again soon. 5/5.

Booked a table for Sunday Lunch. Got there at 12 and dinner took 50 minutes to arrive. There were only 8 people in the place and at the time we were the only ones eating. I did complain that there was only one slice of Beef per plate. We then decided to have a dessert, this took 30 minutes to arrive. The service is dreadful, more interested in standing around talking and ignoring the customers. Shame as this is within walking distance and thought we could go there more often but we won't bother.

My wife and I had an excellent meal at the Ship and Bell. A Chief that can actually cook properly! Friendly helpfull staff. By far the best meal we had during our days staying in Horndean

Ate here twice recently and the Roast dinners are excellent. Under new management and they know their profession. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend & will definitely be returning. Competitive pricing also. See you soon guys, Richard & Angie

On arrival we were warmly greeted by the barman who helped us with the table and gave us 2 menus. Looking at the menu we found it very limited although we selected chicken ceasar salad and the cod and chips. When the food came out it was nicely presented. But that really was where the positive points ended. My wife who loves chicken and salad couldn't eat much of her food because it was very very salted. My fish had a odd taste and it was more batter than fish. Once I cut the batter there wasn't much fish. The chips eere nice but the rest not very nice at all. We made the barman aware of the problems he just said he will let the chef know. He took our plates away which were almost as full as when he delivered the food.

Impulse visit for sunday lunch. Friendly attentive but unobtrusive staff. Excellent food and drinks.

A good local "pub"! Good beer and food available, although more in the snack / light bite range would have been nice during our visit one late afternoon on a Sunday, as they only had full meals on offer, so we did not sample any! Beer was excellent though!

Fish & Chips and great service. We were a group of 12 and the restaurant were pretty accommodating in booking a table 24hrs before. Good traditional pub food especially the fish & chips and the Eton mess was not too bad either! If you want a fab service, ask for Cheryl who was so fantastic in serving a travel weary, demanding and very hungry group.

Me and my husband came out for dinner. Upon arriving we were greeted by a lovely barmaid saffron. We ordered starters and mains both came out promptly. The food was lovely and hot and well presented. Saffron couldn't have been anymore welcoming even if she tried. She was very chatty and made us laugh. Will definitely be back more often. Highly recommend

I come in for drinks with friends every week. Very friendly place great atmosphere saffron who is normally working when we visit is an absolute gem. She cares for our every needs and is hilarious always has us laughing would highly recommend.

Went in fora drink on a Saturday evening with friends. The pace was empty of customers. The one thing I noted as soon as I walked throught the door was the smell. Musty and damp which stayed with me till the following day. The staff had a could not care less attitude, unwelcoming and no conversation. There was food on a plate which looked like fish and chips behind the bar which the staff picked at as they went past during serving. Not very hygenic by the look of things. The tap in the gents restroom was running and would not turn off. So much for saving water. It would definately make me think thrice about coming here again for food or drink again. Ok I wouldnt have to think Thrice as the answer would def be NO never again, which is a great shame as its right on my doorstep.The place needs a good clean by the look of things

During my recent stay near Horndean, my husband and I went in for a meal. this is a lovely restaurant/pub although they did not have any fish (although it was on the menu). I am vegetarian and there were two choices for me one being the fish, the other was a jacket potato which they also did not have I ordered the soup, Leek soup it was tasteless sorry to say.

Had a lovely meal here, lovely staff and everything was great until my toddlers pudding came out a month out of date. we quickly got a different one, however, not offered a refund of the original pudding which I would have expected as he didn't eat the second and I didn't blame him! Definitely wouldn't rush back, this is a health and safety issue if it was meat or cream it could have made someone extremely unwell.

Nice big room comfortable bed good tea making facilities but both bedside table lamps did not work also shaving light was not working, went for breakfast and the staff were busy rearranging the tables as I was waiting, had full English which was average but no fruit juice and was not offered any cereal.

Paying a little homage to the Gales Brewery on whose site this pub sits, this Fullers pub sells HSB, Horndean Special Brew. Well-kept beers and a reasonable selection, there’s good seating and space. They occasionally have live music and it has always had a good atmosphere.

This has been my local pub over the last 40 year's. It used to be the flagship pub for Gale's ales. Now owed by Fuller's. The food is mediocre. On a Friday night they had no Fuller's beer on tap. Including HSB the original ale from horndean. What's going on?

Went for a family Sunday lunch today . Absolutely disgusting. No atmosphere and no one else in there- never a good sign. The roast dinners had clearly been re heated - possibly the worst Sunday lunch I have ever had!terrible service and crap food. Definitely won’t be returning!

Went in for a drink, got a parking ticket a few days later. Took it into the pub and told it would be dealt with, still getting chasing letters weeks later. Also emailed Fullers who don't seem to care either, same with staff when I have returned to complain

After arriving for dinner, and having a charming young lady serve drinks, I decided to peruse the menu.

It was our anniversary and thought we would go local for a nice lunch. Looked at several in Horndean, and the majority offer tapas and snack lunches so thought we would go into the Ship&Bell; for a real lunch. However, a very disinterested young bar maid informed us there was no chef on duty today and there were only various bar snacks, pizzas and Jacket potatoes with various fillings. After a much deliberation we decided to stay and have the jacket potatoes. The potatoes were very overcooked and had very dark brown skins, with minimal cheese and a reasonable portion of beans. The tuna mayonnaise was a bit better. The restaurant was empty apart from us, no atmosphere at all. The service was slow. Having paid almost £8 each for these jacket potatoes, we decided we would stay and eat them, but although they were edible, were not really good. After we consumed these we left and went home for our own coffee. Such a shame as on previous occasions I have enjoyed their food.

Went for a meal to celebrate a birthday. Had to repeatedly ask for cutlery when the meals came out. Meals were nothing special and staff didn’t really seem that attentive given that the pub was fairly empty. A bit more attention to service goes a long way. Menu is very limited and basic. Not what I would expect from a Fullers pub.

I was part of a group of 9 having an evening meal after a family gathering. We were, I felt, well looked after in spite of the size of our group and the table was set in such a way as to allow us to have a good, relaxing social occasion. Our server was a very smiley and hospitable girl who was worked hard but remained cheerful and helpful throughout. The food was very good and the kitchen coped well with a wide variety of choice. Good choice of drink, being a pub and this suited our purposes extremely well. Congratulations Ship and Bell!

We were staying local we decided to try this pub on a bank holiday Monday yesterday

Food Ok but not special, portions small. Friendly and attentive table service, but quite difficult to attract the attention of bar staff unless you're very loud or a well-known face.

Not been to the put in quite a few years and was very pleasantly surprised to find it had been totally refurbished, it now has a lovely warm cosy country pub feel. Plenty of room for larger parties. The sharing platters were beautifully presented and tasty, everyone enjoyed the food, and the waitress was very friendly, prompt and helpful. Look forward to returning.
