Been a while since we visited this small jewel in Cumbria. Years ago it was renowned for good home cooked food so given the opportunity to revisit, we did. As expected these good people are still on top of their game. The venue is clean and homely, the service pleasant and helpful but saving the best til last, the food was exceptional. Solid menu enables varying tastes, portion size generous and quality is superb. A place to visit with satisfaction guaranteed. Give others a miss if you must but not this one!

Arrived and the staff were very quiet, would expect a little more communication. Got given the menu and all three couples could not believe the price of the food. Assuming the food would be amazing we went ahead and ordered. Sadly not worth the money at all! The chips were absolutely lovely but the rest very basic. I live in the lakes and I expect to pay high prices there. But in the village of langwathby definitely not! £13 for a children meal is absolutely appalling! Even in the heart of Keswick some 4/5 star restaurants charge only £1 more for an adults meal. Honestly would never return. You feel like you have been robbed when you leave.

We had a good meal here, not outstanding but very good. All well cooked and presented. The menu is fairly varied but quite expensive for pub food. Service was good and there was a friendly atmosphere. Pretty building in a good location.

Happy to secure a table at this charming village pub but my Luxury Fish Pie would make me think twice about eating there again. No obvious sign of promised smoked fish or prawns… a hint of salmon and boiled egg topped with hot wallpaper paste potatoes. Unnecessary slice of dry bread and a little pot of peas and green beans. My family were happy with their meals but were pleased they avoided my choice. Very disappointing

Stopped for a quick lunch whilst travelling home from the Lakes. Jacket potato with chilli came with large salad and coleslaw, really tasty homemade chilli (yes I admit I was expecting Stagg…) hubby had a cheese and chutney sandwich which came with coleslaw, crisps and salad. Although the section where we ate did not have a traditional pub feel and felt more of a cafe, it was a delightful meal, served by efficient staff, wouldn’t hesitate to return.

Nice to have a vegetarian meal that isn’t just meat substitutes. I just want a meal with vegetables and this is what I got. Delicious butternut squash, onion and chickpea chilli. Huge portion that I so hard tried to finish. My partners meal was a burger, coleslaw, onion rings and chips. All fresh and he really enjoyed it all. Not your cheapest meal but it’s good produce, nicely cooked food and we enjoyed and thought worth the price.

We arrived at lunch having not booked but a friendly lady gave us a table and took some drinks orders. This lady was the nicest member of staff. Nice, bubbly and helpful. We browsed the menu and I chose the steak pie. My husband chose the Jerk chicken wrap off the specials board. Our food arrived after a while. Quite slow but we would rather wait when it's cooked fresh. A man ( who we would later find is the owner) came and put food down and walked away.. My pie was very nice no complaints..however my husbands wrap wasn't as advertised. It said it came with chips and salad but this arrived with sweet potato fries. No one came to check on us and we couldn't catch anyone attention so he left all these as he doesn't like sweet potato fries and chips was advertised! He opened his wrap and found minimal chicken in there and nearly all wrap not chicken so opened to look and what a disappointment! Now priced at £17.95 for the wrap this wasn't cheap! When we finished another lady with dark hair came over and we told her why he had only eaten the wrap and she said let me check..came back and said your right it does say chips let me speak to Steven. She never came back so we went to the bar to pay and she was talking to him and said table 5 which was our table so clearly had spoken to him about it. He gave us the bill and I said to him " I see nothing has been deducted for the mistake" he said what mistake? He clearly knew as we heard the waitress telling him so I said couldn't eat them as they wasn't as described and wouldn't have ordered it if knew it came with sweet potato fries.. He was VERY rude and abrupt and said " they're the Same thing chips fries whatever!" I said no they're not at all and don't have the same taste. He said I dont see your problem! I couldn't believe how rude and said well when you order it should be as described. He said I will take 10 pounds off! But they're the same I can't see your problem you're being picky! I really couldn't believe how he was taking this feedback.. it's not like it's a cheap lunch at 17.95 for a basic wrap! I wouldn't ever go back here based on this and after reading other reviews I can see he has an attitude with other people too. Think twice about where to spend your money as there are others near by that are far better for food and service.. We do not recommend here at all

The staff couldn't have been kinder. I arrived after a puncture delay with a friend to find that the initial three of a group of soaked, cold , bedraggled cyclists on the C2C had been provided with hot drinks, the menu and towels to sit on. The sandwiches were good and we were reinvigorated (for a bit anyway!) before setting out again into the rain. Thanks to all the staff

Visiting my 87 year old grandmother who is a resident within the village. other family members have visited this pub before are recommended us to go. As it was sunny and warm we took my gran for a sandwich and a drink whilst the weather was nice. We have two dogs so naturally sat outside. However the weather took a turn and we were told to go round the otherside and staff would put umbrellas up on the tables. We braved it, and it steadily got colder and wetter. Staff didn't even want to come out and one server joking said through the door that she wasn't coming out! The servers brought out food out but quickly ran back in, with no comment about the weather or how wet it was becoming. Food was ok, expensive for what it was. Soup, sandwich and rarebit or which we actually didn't finish. The ground was flooding so my husband went in to ask if we could sit inside. The manager, a gray haired chap who staff said was the manager, said 'no' We tried to eat our food but the rain was becoming a flash flood, and blowing in on the table. Our food was also getting wet. We noticed the manager walking past the doors and looking at us, and he never came out to see if we were ok. No compassion or friendliness at all. We decided that my husband would run back to the house for the car. He was soaked and commented that the roads had some flash flooding. My husband went in ask spoke to the manager who said something along the lines of...'we never let dogs in no exception' he also commented that another couple sat outside with a dog in the rain like us, however they had walking gear on and were young like myself and my husband. My husband tried to reason with him by saying that as we bought food and drinks an exception considering the weather was so poor could have been made but it was 'computer said no' Very black and white. We all were disappointed, especially my gran who raved about this place as it's within the community. We totally understand no dogs, and we respected this despite the poring rain that even staff didn't want to serve in. We also understand that changes in weather especially in our country is no one's fault but compassion and common sense could have been used. We unfortunately will not be coming back and neither will the family who live in the village. No compassion or empathy particularly for my elderly gran who didn't even finish her soup!

We have called here many times over 45 years travelling from the North-east for a day out in the Lakes and regularly from a static caravan we owned for many years at nearby Ousby. It was always packed out and well known for it's Sunday lunches and fair prices. Today, being a cold but sunny day out we decided to do a trip to the Lakes and called at the Shepherd's Inn. We hadn't been since before Covid and were shocked at the high prices. Both meals came with frozen, not fresh, vegetables. My husband ordered Lamb shank and I ordered Shepherd's pie which was very small and nothing special. My husband couldn't put his knife in the lamb shank and called over a member of staff, a lovely lady as was the bar lady who served our meal. She said it didn't look cooked properly and took it away. The replacement was brought by a man who placed it front of my husband, muttered something and walked away. One side had glazing on top and he started on the unglazed side which was perfect. However under the glazing, it looked like it was burned and like leathe. My husband dislodged one of his teeth. He is aged 81 and doesn't like confrontation but felt he couldn't leave this go and spoke again to the same lady. She went away and the unsmiling manager/owner came and plonked the bill down on our table and walked away. My husband paid the bar lady and told her he was disgusted and that after the many times we'd been there, we would never return. He left the pub and I then also said how disgusted I was with his meal and for the price, they couldn't even serve fresh vegs. I added that the manager couldn't even take anything off the bill. He was in the corner behind her, came up to the bar and glared at me. I said the replacement you brought covered up with glazing was disgusting and you are shameful in not taking anything off the bill. He turned and walked away and I walked out.

The venue is nice and the prices on the menu made me think we might be in for a bit of a treat, but sadly not. The 'Turkey with all the trimmings' on the seasonal menu was £16.95 (the cheapest option) and was the kind of food you'd expect at a school Christmas dinner. The veg were over cooked, the gravy was standard bisto, the stuffing was nothing to write home about. Another group member had the salmon en-croute (£18.95!) which oddly had currents in it - and the pastry was pants. Dessert at £8.15 perhaps would make up for it? No. The Christmas pudding was like a tasteless sponge cake in a bowl of barely rum flavoured custard. The fudge cake was one of the worst ever experienced. The service wasn't great either. At no point in the meal were we asked if everything was OK and it was an effort to get attention to get more drinks. Other service related rudeness sealed the deal. We won't be back.

We shared the pie with some sides when we went. The pie was lovely but the mash was hard on the outside for some reason and the vegetables and gravy were lukewarm. The girl who served us was lovely but the elder man with great hair interacted with us three times without any warmth, eye contact or smile so that was a bit off putting. Also it doesn’t feel like a pub. All the tables are laid in rows set for dining with no drinking area. Thanks anyway.

After a long walk through the picturesque villages around Langlathby, Lazonby and Great Salkeld we ate at this very welcoming inn. We both had the smaller portion of steak and ale pie which was a very generous portion served with vegetables and a choice of chips or mash. I didn't have room for dessert but my husband had the eton mess which he said was lovely served with cherries. We had planned to go back on the train to Settle our home town but due to an incident on the railway no trains were running. The lovely staff at the the Shepherds Inn were so helpful finding us a room and toiletries. The room was clean and bed very comfortable so all in all we had a lovely stay. Breakfast was very good, all locally produced products and again the lady on duty was extremely pleasant and we will definitely return.

Visited as a group of 7 - me, 4 kids and my parents. V friendly and well kept pub. Great selection of ales - staff well presented. Food menu excellent with smaller portions for kids and adults with lesser appetites (my mother). Portions v v generous - also exceptionally well presented and cooked. I had the Bavette having been torn between this and the Lakeland wagyu burger. Steak was cooked to perfection and bearnaise sauce was the best I’ve ever had. Would happily visit every week if we lived nearby. Will definitely be back when in the area.

Looked such a lovely pub in a delightful setting so we decided to stop and have lunch. My husband said his beer was “ slightly off” i.e. the end of the barrel - he knows his beer but he didn’t send it back, which he would normally. I was looking forward to the fish pie and at £19 a portion I hoped it would live up to expectations. Sadly it looked better than it tasted. The veg looked and tasted like it Elias starlight from the freezer. I’ve honestly had better supermarket ready meals. There was a large bone in amongst the mush of fish and potato. No succulent prawns or pieces of fish and not a hint of cheese. In other words completely lacking in flavour. Such a disappointment. My husband had the bavette steak which wasn’t bad in fairness. Wished we’d skipped lunch here and gone to the Black Bull at Nateby instead. Their food is sublime!

First day on the COVID road map where eating inside was allowed, so we were all a bit rusty, but the pub was well sorted with precautions. The dining room was modern and comfortable with well-spaced tables. My partner had a creamy chicken dish, which was delicious. I had (appropriately enough) shepherd’s pie, which I thought could have done with more seasoning, even though I don’t add salt to my cooking. We drank a very nice New Zealand Sauvignon blanc. Staff are amazing, such a shame they've had to lockdown for so long due to government incompetence. Black pudding & Cumberland sausage-meat Scotch Egg, Chips and salad with wholegrain mustard dressing. Side order of Estrella, top notch👍🏼

Lovely unscheduled lunch stop here on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Situated on a quiet village green and just off the main road. Sandwich ordered but was very impressed with the side salad (the true barometer of the lunch offering). Quick, straightforward and helpful service.

We had a fantastic lunch here as we took a break on our C2C Cycle. I would recommend the selection of Little Shepherds for the perfect size lunch before you tackle Hartside Fell.

staff and food was excellent. Service also good, however, reading the menue I felt that the dish, known as 'Gangster jerk chicken' does smack of a negative racial stereotype. A renaming should be considered.

Been here a few times and can reccomend "The Wathby Whale" from a previous visit. This time I had the steak and really enjoyed it. Good quality and with loads of veg and chips. Good hearty food. The cheese and biscuits for dessert was massive and far too much after a huge main course, but tasty. The only downside was were in the downstairs room on our own as the main dining area was full. Our own fault for not booking.

Went for Dinner on a Friday evening and the pub was very full - good job we booked! Good quality home made food and service was quick and efficient despite the crowds of diners. I finished my meal with an apple crumble which was delicious. The Landlord candidly remarked that with the glut of apples in local orchards "Fruit Crumble" was going to be apple for some time!

We’re regulars at the Shepherd’s Inn Langwathby when visiting my Mother in Penrith. We love the ‘Wathby Whale’ & Steak & Ale pie and it’s great that you can order smaller portions of some of the dishes. This evening was busy so we were pleased we’d booked. We ordered Steak and Ale pie, a small portion of beef lasagne with salad and chips and I chose the vegetarian curry. All meals were piping hot, beautifully presented and generous helpings. The vegetarian curry served with naan bread, pilau rice and poppadom was absolutely delicious and is my new favourite. Thanks to all the staff for our warm welcome and attentive service and to the chef for a wonderful meal.

Been here a few times and it has always been a pleasant experience. This time our family popped in after a days kayaking on Ullswater. Home cooked food was exactly what we needed and rhe steak pie was superb. Traditional short crust pastry just as it should be. Anyway, all the food served was good and our request for custard (which was not on the menu) was delivered with no fuss. Service lost its focus for one course but not enough to downgrade the experience. Top banana.

A solid pub food menu, but the food goes beyond. Two very healthy appetites demolished between them an excellent burger and a proper shepherds pie with relish, and my 'Little Shepherd' portion of Cumberland sausage with the best mash ever just left me room for a dessert. Good thinking, as the desserts were as generous as the mains. The cheesecake king deemed the cheesecake of the day (white chocolate) most excellent and as two serious sticky toffee pudding addicts - we judged it amazing!

Stayed here for one night as a last minute break, this was one of only a few places left available in the lakes area at the time,at 1st i thought it was gonna be too far out of the way for anything but im so pleased we stayed there. The place is in a lovely little village and the pub itslef is very cozy with a log burner and a real retro bar full of character, the staff work very hard and nothing was any trouble esp the scotch guy,he never stopped. I wouldnt hesitate to book again,we had a great night and returned home feeling recharged and refreshed.

We recently stayed on a two night Travelzoo deal. The hotel is finished to a lovely stylish clean standard. The pub food was lovely, fresh and tasty. We did find it a little steeper price wise to what we are familiar with. The room was nicely finished and comfortable. The light did pour through the window when cars drove past at night and also under the door from the hallway which kept me awake. The radiator in the room was technical and it wouldn’t come on so we were happy to have an electric heater too. Breakfast was continental, it was nice but we felt it was missing some meat and maybe more exciting cheeses. The coffee was lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful but out of the three we dealt with we felt one of them wasn’t so professional and sincere. Shouting things to the kitchen before the door was closed and generally a bit rude. The check in /out times were a touch late/early. Otherwise well done Dukes head and travelzoo too.
