We visited the Sheaf of Arrows for the first time, and will be returning soon. Warm and comfortable, efficient and friendly service, and an excellent Sunday roast washed down with a couple of pints of well-kept ale.

We had a wonderful evening for a birthday. We were staying in the area and this was a gem of a find. Staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere of the pub was warm, cosy and inviting. We were a large group of adults and children and everybody throughly enjoyed their food. Fish and chips was the best we've ever tasted, burgers were top notch and the pies were a hit! If we are back in the area, we will definitely be back here! An excellent experience for all!

We visited as a small walking group on a weekday lunchtime and were made very welcome by the landlord who personally prepared delicious sanwiches and lunch time snacks. Excellent local ale on tap from the Wimborne Eight Arch Brewery. So good to see this local pub at the heart of Cranbone Chase back open again after a significant makeover, without loss of its rustic charm. Will definitely return.

Really good food in this locals pub. We selected the bream, and the bobotie. The bream was a good size portion, served with samphire. Really good. I tried the bobotie, served with riceand a naan. (The recipe being a family hand me down) It was really tasty, and reminded me of a "moussaka with attitude". Great value, served by a friendly and enthusiastic member of the team. We visited on a Saturday evening. Great relaxed atmosphere. Thoroughly recommend.

Stopped off for an impromptu lunch. Unplanned but the reviews looked good. The good things first (hence not 1 star). For lunch the prices were very inexpensive, the beer (6d local) was very good and the staff friendly. The atmosphere of the place could best be described as cold and featureless - its is hard to put one's finger on it but it just feels odd. An unused ice cream fridge in one corner, the furniture, decor, even the beer garden was devoid of character. We are relatively local and hoped the food would be the clincher as still in search of good pubs in the region. It was not - we both had fish and chips but the fish was over cooked and the rest was generally not in the 4 star plus bracket. We should have followed our gut feeling as we went in but didn't. We might be missing its delights but can't recommend this pub I'm afraid.

This review is based ONLY on the accommodation. We stayed in Aug 2019 and vowed never to return. We remembered it was being looked after by caretakers whilst waiting for permanent owners. We visited today Aug 25th 2022 and asked to see a room. We were not disappointed, it had been completely re-fitted with new furniture, fixture and fittings. New bathroom etc etc. We will definitely stay again now that we’ve seen the massive improvements for ourselves. So glad we popped in, we know where to stay next year.

This review should be read with the knowledge that the new landlords have only been in tenancy for a month. The Good BitsBeautiful old pub set in the village of Cranborne. Sanitiser on hand and a really warm welcome. Ample parking outside. I needed to leave early in the morning and the chef went out of his way to make me not one but two bacon rolls to go, complete with a selection of sauces for an early morning start. Thank you so much. The landlady had also put an oil filled radiator in my room in advance to warm it up, again lovely touch. The Room For Improvement BitsThe food is fine if you fancy a main course with chips - basic pub fare, although I did notice sandwiches were listed on the light bites board. I fancied just a burger which was well cooked and served with a smile, but it was quite a limited menu. Similarly the only desserts were "with custard".I had booked the single room which was clean if cheaply furnished. Quite large on suite shower but the room looked very tired and the carpet felt quite sticky in a number of places. The TV remote did not work and a selection of hastily gathered batteries indicated it was broken rather than just "out of battery". I eventually got the TV working using the side buttons but it was fiddly.Overall although the room was OK for a night, it needs to be thought out better. No chair so the only way to watch the TV was sitting in bed, but then as the TV is tiny and placed on a small side table at the bottom of the bed, you cant see over the bed frame to watch it. I ended up dragging it round to the side. The only light in the room is a ceiling light towards the door, and lit with a low wattage bulb. It was far too dark to read my book (hence the TV saga) and you have to get out of bed and walk across the room to switch the light off. A light or uplighter near the bed would be much better.A kettle was supplied with tea and coffee, however the design of the basin in the bathroom meant you could not the kettle under it to fill it up. Luckily I had an empty water bottle I could partially fill and then transfer to the kettle. The pub is old with old sash windows which do not fit well - the window knocked all night in the breeze.Similarly the age of the pub means sound insulation is not great. Strains of Candle in the Wind and Living on a Prayer sung badly on the karaoke was so loud I could have been downstairs (in fact I did contemplate it). You can also hear every word that is said or shouted in the bar underneath. My saving grace is that the pub had to close at 10 pm due to COVID restrictions which they did adhere to.The entrance to the rooms up the stairs is extremely in need of decoration - yellow chipped paint and threadbare dirty carpet.Overall an OK place for a night with really lovely landlady and staff who go out of their way to make you feel welcome but in dire need of a room revamp and modernisation. I understand that the current situation does not bode well for revamps but with a bit of work in the future this coud be a lovely place to stay.

Food and drink very reasonably priced, and must say the food was fantastic. I particularly enjoyed a full English breakfast each morning! Despite wet weather, kids even got themselves outside to play giant chess, which kept them amused for ages (despite not knowing the rules!).The local regulars who we met whilst at the pub were also equally nice, and help create that village feel and atmosphere. John and the team were great from start to finish, and we wish them well with the pub and hope to return again.

I hadn't visited the Sheaf of Arrows (formerly the Rest and Welcome) since it reopened after a major refit under new management. It has certainly changed with the space opened up and a stripped down rather modern decor introduced. It looks more of a restaurant than a pub inside now. It was reasonably busy for a Saturday Lunchtime given they must mostly rely on passing trade There is a quite an extensive menu of fairly usual pub food. As we had stopped for lunch and wanted a lighter meal we had pate and toast , a chicken and bacon sandwich and a jacket potato with cheese. All the food was very good and the service was prompt, very friendly and efficient.A little expensive thought we thought

I hadn't had a burger for ages so I ordered just a plain one. Had mistake, it was awful, I did ask what the sauce was & just mayonnaise was told. To me it seemed instead of it being seasoned with salt, sugar was used, my husband tried it & he too said the burger had sugar in. An ex chef should know

Pub grub is meant to be wholesome, tasty, and good value. The Sheaf of Arrows is in a great location in the lovely little village of Cranborne, but based on our experience their catering suffers from a preponderance of stodge. My partner and I were out Geocaching this weekend, a 15 mile round trip out in the countryside around Cranborne and Six Penny Handley. We stopped after 8 miles for a well deserved lunch. The Sheaf of Arrows was the first we came across and were so desperate to sit down we went on in. It was lunchtime on a Saturday afternoon and the place was deserted. Just one customer sat at the bar. When you walk in somewhere like that you can feel awkward and also don't hold out much hope for quality food. Well don't judge a book by its cover. We were greeted by a very friendly member of staff. They had a problem with their coke, nothing was too much trouble. We ordered the burger and ham and eggs and it was lovely. Nice thick cut ham and the chips... YUM!! This little pit stop was just what we needed and we will be back for a less rushed visit soon. Thank you :)

There was a moment of hilarity though when one of our group ordered the gluten free steak pie, it came out in a pie dish but with no pastry, he asked if the pastry came separately but was told ‘no, that is the gluten free version’. Recently I have been doing research into my family tree, After finding out my great grandmother was from Cranbourne, I thought it could be worth a visit to see if she (or I) have any family left in the village. Once arriving, on a cloudy day, I found the villagers to be friendly people, once the rain started, I popped into the sheaf of arrows to dry off. Finding the pub empty on a Sunday afternoon seemed a little odd to me, but because it was wet and I was't sure on where I was going, I didn't let that stop me from going in and ordering a drink!

Not healthy or full of flavour food but reasonable prices and good service. In essence though, it's a place where locals go to drink beer, and plenty of it.

Called in on the off chance and sampled the "over 60s" lunch. This was only £6.00 each for one course and Tea or Coffee. Good value but very limited choice of mains. Other menu and specials also on offer. Pleasant staff. No car park but parking in road.

Wow. Wasn't sure about this place on first approach. Looked like a run of the mill pub and we considered eating elsewhere, how glad we are that we didn't. Great beer and lager but the surprise was the massive plate of food we received. We ordered sandwiches, which start at £3.50, and come with great chips, proper home-made coleslaw and a salad. All fresh and beautiful to taste. My Tuna baguette was lovely and filled me up completely, my wife struggled and all for less than a tenner. Can't recommend this place for lunch enough.

Popped in here for a quick late lunch - getting on for 3pm and was pleased they were still offering a full lunch menu. I had lasagne which was really nice, my friend had steak pie which he said was very good too. Pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the food. Would have like a larger choice of real ales.Staff were very helpful and attentive which is hard to find these days so thank you to them!

Warm welcome on arrival, beer excellent, food very good value for money, great service. They were more than happy to serve food to a party of 8.The Sheaf is a basic village pub, don't expect flowery descriptions of poncey food. The food menu has many options, mostly pub staples. The food is served in generous portions and is very good for the price and doesn't come with half the plate smothered in a certain salad leaf.My only complaint is that my son's pizza had far too much cheddar on it and was very salty, I can eat anything, but the pizza was just too much for me. Everyone else's food was great, I asked for an alternate dish for my son and was offered one without any hesitation. We will be going back there.

A good village pub which serves good pub food at good pub prices. Choice of 3 ales and is disabled friendly except the toilets. The toilets are not big enough for wheel chairs. Highly recommended for lunchtime visit.

This lovely pub is in Cranborne, but due to its postal address it does not come up when you search for Cranborne pubs on this website. That is a shame, as it is a very friendly place, and a reasonably priced alternative to the other pub in the village. I loved the friendly atmosphere and the 80s music (played at a nice unobtrusive volume). I noticed that the place was dog-friendly too. Helpings of food were large and hearty, but not (thank goodness) gastro.

We stayed here for 2 nights and have to say that we found it ideal. Rooms are not luxurious but clean and have everything you need. Comfortable bed and hot shower. The breakfast was really good perfectly cooked eggs with full English. But the real reason for the review is how helpful the staff were. Thanks

Stumbled across this place whilst staying locally, a typical local English pub with friendly staff and good food. Great value too.

Took 8 people in today for Sunday lunch after a 5 mile walk around Cranborne. Staff very polite and didn't mind our rather dirty dogs. Good vale roast at £8.50 and the scampi looked good too. One person upset that the pumpkin soup had ran out but it was a day after Halloween. Enjoyed her chips instead. Home made Yorkie very good and tasty gravy.

Well decided to pop out for lunch today, and revisited the Sheaf of Arrows as we had been told it was under new management. The food is amazing. We were made very welcome and the humility pie tasted divine. The steak was good and the garlic mushrooms were gorgeous. Well worth the 80mile drive. Beware of the portions. They are huge

This was a chance visit and to be honest first impressions weren't great, the pub is a bit "spit & sawdust" but the welcome was warm and friendly, it was about 1.30 pm and there were only about 8 people in the place, no one was eating, after enquiring if they were still serving food we were told only roast beef, turkey or pork was available. our table was laid whilst we enjoyed our drinks, three different sauces were provided and three different gravy's each to compliment the 3 meats. the meals were of generous proportions, were well presented and delicious, all four of us agreed that we had just enjoyed one of the best Sunday roasts any of us could remember. give it a try.

What can I say. Great beer, great food. You have to have the Mezzie. Promise you, it's amazing. Mel the Landlord is great, the locals are very friendly and they tolerated us. We had a great time there and recommend many more visits.

Family & dog friendly, pleasant staff, reasonable bar & food prices. Typical "village" pub - but could do with some more comfortable seating, and perhaps slightly more subdued lighting to promote that "cosy" feeling..?

A village pub with no over done decoration but everyone is friendly. Good guest ale and the food is exceptionally good & reasonably priced. We had a couple of good evenings here.

This is a real pub. It sells excellent pub grub. It is not a restarant, and doesn't pretend to be. Nothing fancy about it. A warm friendly welcome is virtually guaranteed. We visited for their ST George's meal special, which was terrific value for money, and cooked to perfection In fact they also have a steak evening on a Saurday, which is extremely popular.

We were recommended to visit the SoA for a pub lunch and weren't disappointed. The food was a step up from normal pub grub, very good portions (we had no room for pudding!) and very, very tasty. Considering food was prepared to order, it wasn't a long wait either. The staff were very friendly too.Be warned, the nacho sauce is HOT!

Having recently changed hands we decided to stay overnight New years eve, the rooms are clean & tidy with tea & coffee making facilities. The full english breakfast in the morning was in our opinion first rate with doorstep toast and most importantly a proper sausage.(if you don't have a big appetite my advice is to order half a breakfast) The staff are friendly and the landlord & landlady are warm, friendly and very accomadting. The menu is varied, serving good quality food at very reasonable prices. So a big thankyou to both Karen & Chris, chef's Chris & Chambo & friendly bar staff- Well worth a visit. :-)

Having found that The Inn at Cranborne that we'd booked for an overnight stay was actually closed on Mondays (i.e. you could sleep there, but the pub/restaurant was shut!), we were mightily relieved to find the Sheaf of Arrows. We initially popped in for a late afternoon drink (pint of local bitter and a glass of Pimm's), and the service was no heirs and graces friendly - it's always nice to share a joke with the landlord to put you at ease in a small country pub. Had a game of darts too!Went back later for food - this was basic but freshly prepared and cooked. Again the service was friendly and really efficient. It seems that this place picks up a lot of business from The Inn at Cranborne not being open on Mondays - at least two other parties from the I@C ate at the Sheaf too.If you're after a gastro pub, this ain't the place. If you want proper ale, real people, a decent portion of no frills food, darts and a beer garden, go for it.

We went for Sunday carvery yesterday, we were very impressed. A warm welcome on a foul day. Not too busy but a nice atmosphere. Friendly staff, good service and the food was delicious. Very reasonably priced too. We've booked to go again in a couple of weeks with the rest of the family. Thanks to all the staff.

We had a double room at the rear of the hotel nice and quiet, breakfast was plentiful, went for a family meal 6 adults and couldn’t fault the food. Our waitress Molly helpful and polite.
