Shaw's in Newcastle-under-Lyme

I went to shaw's for the first time in 6/7 years since i moved to Scotland, came down to visit family and i remembered how good shaws was so had to try it again. It's still as amazing as it was back then. The chips were hot, loads of salt and vinegar and didn't wait more than 2/3 minutes. Best chippy ive ever had.

Small portions, big price, miserable and rude staff. Won’t be returning. Used to be a good chip shop but certainly not the case now.

Visited at lunch time today & found it well organised re Covid. Ordered cod and chips...wow! The fish was long and thick...the batter crispy and tasty. As usual in the chippies in Staffordshire there were too many chips! Better than not enough :-) Fish cooked to order so hot and fresh....worth waiting for. The ladies were friendly and I would definitely recommend a visit. Lots of people were having takeaways and sat in the sunshine outside. The dining area is basic but clean. The only drawback is, if it was raining, the loo is in the yard!!

If the women dont like your face they will give you the nasty gravy and think they can smile all smug thinking they didnt hear what you just said to your mate just before taking it out to be cleaned haha 440 for chip peas and gravy come keep it

Only 1 person at a time allowed in. Nothing cooked, all made to order. At this time no point queueing or going until they sort their system out.

Was great last time I visited, not so anymore. Expensive especially for the portion you receive, Arrogant owner needs to learn some manners

Proper fish and chips served piping hot....brings back mementoes of my childhood when going out to eat fish and chips was our monthly treat.The batter is crispy and light, not oily and wet as most places these days. The fish is fresh and succulent and the chips are to die for. It’s competitively priced and thus great value for money.Put this on your bucket list, you won’t regret it!

I decided to treat a friend to lunch at Shaw's. I remember it as one of the best chippy in the area.We were very disappointed in both the service and the food. My friends fish was dark brown, the batter was thick and mushy inside. The chips were so hard we were worried about breaking our teeth. The restaurant bit was very full but we managed to get a table at the very back. We waited for our drinks and in the end we had to go to the kitchen and ask for them as the woman there didnt know we had ordered drinks. A member of staff moved a wheelchair into a recessed area moaning that it was in her way. It really wasnt and the customer had done his best to put it in the right place.We didnt feel we had either good food or good service.

Visited with family, eat in the attached cafe. We all had fish ahd chips, all delicious and amazing, its one of the best chip shops around, good service, no complaints

I did a review a few monthes back about this place "why is nothing ready". The food when its available is fine but almost impossible to find any.3.10.2019 at approx 12 .40pm. I went into an empty shop (no spam fritters but I expected that) I fancied a fish. " can you put me a large fish in please?" That will be 10 to 15 minutes!!!!!!. Walked out yet again. As said before only chippy in town, lunch breaks for workers 1 hr between 12 and 1 or 1 and 2 pm, they dont have time to walk to a chippy and wait 15 mins and then have time to eat it!.Not the first time I have walked out, sometimes I glance through the door to see what is cooked and thats usually a dry fishcake or sausage.Thats it finished with Shaws not worth the time or detour.

Simples, food good, service ok so whats wrong? Why is nothing ever ready?Only chip shop in Newcastle town center so it has a monopoly thats fine, passing trade always there till around 4pm, workers on lunch breaks 12 till 1, 1 till 2 plenty of custom so why is nothing pre cooked so you can go in and be out again in minutes? Typical example, SPAM FRITTERS!!! 89p, not the end of the world if at the end of the day one or two are not sold and have to be binned!, yet I go in ask for one and its either we havent got any or I,ll just put you one in! sorry dear im not waiting, things to do ppl to see car parks to get out of. Its not just the Spam Fritters, the only thing that does seem to be pre cooked is 3 sausages in the corner and two fish cakes, fish ? forget it not even between 12 and two on a saturday.Thats it, sorry, but I dont even bother anymore my loss and yours.

Excellent chips cooked the old fashioned way, this chippy has been open now for many years which says a lot about their food. There is a cafe at the back also where you can eat. Closes at 4.30 though and is not open at night.

Had fish, chips and peas and the rest of the family had the eat in fish specials. Amazingly good, great value, fish was massive and delicious, it was absolutely faultless.

Always visit when I am in NuL (not very frequently, unfortunately). So I've been 4 times so far and every time the food was excellent. It is very busy usually, but well worth a visit if you like god=od fish and chips.

hubby and I decided to have lunch at shaws chippy, not what it used to be. Fish was greasy with thick hard batter and not much fish, the chips were all black and covered in bits as if the oil had not been cleaned for a few months. The sausage was hard and burnt on the bottom, we left most of our meals. We will not be returning

In town and wanting lunch the Wife and I decided to visit the cafe at Shaws.

This is a lovely chip shop if you can get a table as very often it's busy.The food comes quick and plentiful and is very nice,good cupa aswell.

Been around for years, this popular chippy is not what it used to be. It's good, but others have overtaken it now, but given its prime location it will always be busy. Average prices and great service though.

This time they had ketchup (right at the bottom of the bottle, so it took some squeezing to get it out) but no sweet chilli sauce.

The chips I was served inside the cafe were all riddled with black bits and a generous serving of hard overcooked bits to garnish. Only decent thing about it was the size if mug for the coffee

Out with a few friends, pretty quick service. Really enjoyed the fish we had, chips could’ve been a bit cleaner but all in all a good experience would definitely recommended.

Best Fish and Chip shop in Newcastle, ive been going there as a kid and used to go with my nan every saturday when we did shopping. Pop in every now and then on my dinner breaks for a portion of chips.

I have used this chip shop before and it has been fine, but this last visit the chips were terrible they should not have been served.

Waited for about 20 minutes for order. Unusual ordering system and staff seemed extremely busy, never once smiling or offering a greeting. Fish and chips quite good.

Chippie tea on a Friday didn't disappoint at Shaws. 4 of us had a carry out and were very satisfied by the quality and the portion. However the prices are not what they used to be either, fish is particularly expensive...

Fish and chips, the fish had been cooked quite a while before it was served. The batter had gone soggy sng stuck to the paper, chipswarm on the outside, cold inside. Poor. Don't bother, they used to be special fro here, no more. Downhill chippy..

Good old fashioned fish and chips even though the fish are triangular. Hasn't dipped in quality in the 30 years or so that I've visited there.

A good old fashioned chippy. Takeaways are served from the front and thee is a seating area at the rear. The fish and chips are the best we have eaten in the area and every dinner is made to feel welcome. If you are looking for good value and a tasty fish and chip meal, you won't be disappointed.

Absolutely love this place, had to have fish and chips while we were in the area, fresh honest food with no frills.

I only had a takeaway so can't comment on the eat in bit. I had a sausage bap and chips for £1.39 which was excellent value . The chips were really nice the sausage pretty good and plenty of it , I'd def go again...

Venda pescado shaws y todavía se usan métodos tradicionales y produce las mejores patatas fritas nunca. Fue fundada alrededor de 1900, y tiene una cafetería en la parte trasera, que sirve excelente comida a precios muy razonables con chip.

El servicio es cálido y amable. Mejor pescado y patatas fritas, arroz, guisantes, patatas fritas y salsa para morirse. Me trasladé a Sudáfrica 30 años y cada vez que estoy de vuelta en Newcastle

Yo visite la ciudad una vez a la semana y siempre vienen aquí el personal es muy amable y nunca he tenido ninguna queja sobre la comida, la única cuestión es si quieres comer allí han sido un par de veces cuando no hay asientos disponibles. Pero aún así, el mejor sitio para comer en la ciudad

Indiscutiblemente el mejor venda en la ciudad. La relación es normal, la comida es excelente y el servicio es normal si estás comiendo.

I visited this chip shop after being drawn in by the inviting aroma of the cooking of the fish and chips. They have a fasility to dine inside as well as takeaways. I decided to eat inside in a special room behind the serving area. This was very full, I guess with regular customers. The fish and chips were excellent and I hope to return again before to long.

We piped in for the special lunch offer and it was very good the only criticism was the vinegar was watered down and when you have such good fish n chips you do not want watered down vinegar.

Le personnel est adorable et le fish and chips une tuerie. J'ai choisi le "small" et c'était déjà énorme. Le tout est fait maison. Il est possible de manger sur place.

We have visited Shaws several times before and have always enjoyed the fish and chips. However this time we were very disappointed with the fish, it was a funny brown colour and dry and the batter was dark brown. Several other people in at the time had fish, and the batter and fish were a totally different colour and looked freshly cooked. The only explanation for this is in my opinion is that it had been dropped back in the oil and reheated.

Been coming to this chippy for the last 25 years and it is still run by the same family, great family run chip shop in the centre of town

Stopped by for lunch with my 5yo son during half term and we really enjoyed our fish, chips and peas in the cafe. Plenty of food for both of us, all very tasty too, with a mug of tea and a can of pop all for under a tenner.

The chips here are perfect. Some of the best ships ive ever eaten in my life. If i still lived down there id go back again.

Only stopped for chips but were freshly cooked and very good value with 3 portion sizes available. Would call again.

When ever we visit it is busy here, generally we have take away, the food is always hot and sometimes there is a bit of a wait.

It's hard to walk past Shaws Chippy and not want chips! I have been here many times since a child with my mum and Nan and now with my partner. The chips are amazing! Taste great!

This restaurant is always busy with great reason to be. The food was delicious. You can eat outside on the deck and watch the lobster boats unload or inside. We went for a late lunch and it was busy but we didn't wait. Highly recommended!

I hate chip shop chips - they are often soggy and greasy, but not these. They seem light and are absolutely gorgeous. The fish was nicely cooked and the batter was tasty. Its a nice treat for us after we've walked down to the town/

If you are passing by you just have to pop in! Either take away or eating, generous portions, friendly staff.

Went to Shaws for lunch.. had a lovely chips and spam in batter was lovely, and my mum had chips and sausage and gravy she also enjoyed hers :)

Took my Nan here the other day, she used to go here as a teenager and is now 93. She has fond memories of the place, doesn't look like much has changed in the cafe at the back. Tasty food served by friendly staff offering good value for money

Shaw's has been in Newcastle for as long as I can remember. A traditional fish 'n' chip shop with a no-frills cafe at the back.They have a full chip shop menu to choose from and a few lunchtime specials which include a drink. Small fish, chips, home-made mushy peas, a round of bread and butter and a mug of tea for less than a fiver was lovely and a good deal.Long may they remain!

love the food from here everything is cooked fresh and served piping hot. good selection of cold drinks and also they do tea and coffee.

quality traditional fish and chips, smells are beautiful from miles away, friendly helpful staff, very clean but a little dated establishment but thats what makes it so traditional. the curry sauce is second to none :-)

yet again shaws have done it again, took the kids and my wife in last week to shaws and not a single chip left on the plates. and i was plesently surprised at how much it cost me to take us all out for lunch. and also you get a propper mug of tea just perfect for washing down a good meal.

Whenever I am 500yds from this establishment I am drawn in by the mystical scent of fish and chips frying in Dripping!!! A true feeling of its good to be alive today and off I follow like one of the Bisto kids. I have had the pleasure of eating these wonderful delights for 35years now. My earliest memory is going swimming at the now flattened Jubillee Baths on a Saturday morning with mates then going to Shaws for Chips and Gravy! Not a Happy meal in sight, or a six storey glass and chrome eye sore! But some very happy children.

Been there alot of times and i have always had amazing chips and sausage yum from there and good service.

I love Shaws chippy they are proper chippy chips and the gravy its lovely for me the inside needs updating that's all then it would get a 5.

This little nugget of a chippy doesn't open evenings, just daytime, but their chips have their own taste.Small portions always, but it is quality not quantity here.Sit in their little café or take out, but their chips, pudding, peas and gravy as FAB.Staff who work their started during Queen Victoria, but they know what they are doing.

As the title says the chips are to die for... I had chips, sausage bap & gravy... The chips were like my mouth had just died and been resurrected from the flavour but the sausage was like a sausage which had been cooked the night before so that wasn't nice, the gravy was lumpy and the woman who served me microwaved it (Not a good sign on the gravy.) But as I said the chips are the best around!If you go just get chips, nothing else!

We visit shaws after I take my daughters to the cinemas only because my youngest loves the idea of a cone of chips, quick and cheap. Every time they are full of bits, over fried and greasy. Have done this about four times and never had nice chips. I don't take her anymore. Shame really as there are no other chip shops in town :(

Delicious chips - light, fluffy and not greasy. Lovely fresh fish. Can't be beaten! Good prices and friendly service. It's our Saturday treat when we walk into town.

Over a number of years I have been a massive fan of Shaws . Not visited for a long time but yesterday I thought I would treat myself to Fish & Peas.My first observation was that the large fish had shrunk somewhat since I last came in. I will get straight to the point it wasn't very nice at all and wont be returning for another, shame as the fish there use to be beautiful. I don't know if they have changed the supplier but it tasted cheap !

Delicious chips, well cooked and lacking the horrid greasiness of ,most other chip shops. The fish is tasty and beautifully cooked! It's our little treat after a long walk into town on Saturday!

This is a well established old style chip shop in the town, it has a seating area to the back of the shop, not grand by any imagination , basic chairs and tables, but we always use when down the town and fancy some fish and chips or other choices. It is always hot and good quality and fresh, not heated up like some places.just the job if you are in need of a bit of good old fashioned fish and chips.

Had some chips from here the other day, wow, they were the best chips we'd had in ages. Looking forward to a return visit. They were served in a traditional cone and everyone in Newcastle seemed to be eating them, I can now see why. Great place.

This is a very old and well known chippy. The chips have a taste of their own. Well worth a visit at lunchtime.

Shaw's is a newcastle under lyme landmark, my fiancees family in Ireland always visit when they are over for vacations as the food is that good! Friendly staff and atmosphere.

A local institution. Fish & chips are best in area. Very rich and moreish. Cooked in beef dripping are they ? Something sets these apart from the rest. Once you've been to this chippy, you won't go to another. It's a guilty pleasure - once or twice a month.

The best chips you'll get from anywhere in town, by FAR.Just make sure you ask for a cone of chips, because if you just ask for a cone you'll get a cone! (It made me laugh at least! :))Good thick gravy too!

shaws chip shop by far serve the most enjoyable fish and chips in staffordshire, it is a traditional chippy with friendly and helpful staff and is not ultramodern or too up in your face. the food is cooked perfect no matter what you order, i often take friends and family in there for dinner and everyone really enjoyes the food. keep up the hard work guys :-)

Great little shop. Part of Newcastle's heritage. Best fish & chips in the Potteries. And certainly better than Harry Ramsdens as another reviewer mentioned. We like it because of the flavour. Is it the beef dripping/fat that the chips are cooked in ?!! Yum yum. Thick black gravy too - a north Staffs treat. This is my 3rd favourite chippy after the one at the end of the main drag in Aldeburgh, Suffolk and Marcos in Arbroath harbour. Get in !

if youre out and about you must taste the fish and chips here..no burgers,hotdogs,curries just the finest fish and chips..cooked fresh to order..100% quality..typical old style chippy

Shaws is the best chip shop in the world!! They are just a different class than anywhere else. It’s a real shame that they don’t open later than 18:00 because they would triple their takings.

It is at best an average chippy with 90% of sales being take-away. I found the fish and chips to be average to good. It's not exactly Harry Ramsden's! And it closes by 18.00.

I can happily say, and have always thought, that Shaws do the best chips in Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme without a doubt!I am never disappointed and would definitely recommend this chippy!
