Shappen Cafe in New Forest

We thought we would try this place having been to other in Burley previously. the restaurant and outdoor tables look appealing. the area around the cafe could do with a tidy but ok, needs to be made more welcoming rather than a area of grass and stones with a couple of old reels as tables. we sat outside and I ordered at the counter. WE saw at least 4 orders being carried outside and then back in as they couldn't find the people for the orders (they did take table numbers). finally our drinks came out after about 20 minutes. the food followed some 10 minutes later and the drinks were at that point hotter than the food that arrived. Not an unusual event as the table adjacent sent their food back as cold. We ate what was served as we were under time constraints. Husband had full breakfast and I had wild mushrooms. His was good with a pile of scrambled eggs (albeit not hot) Mine looked fancy but the mushrooms tasted of nothing and the texture was like they had been boiled. no oil (butter for cooking wild mushrooms would have been preferential) the avocado was not smashed but in a couple of big lumps, the poached eggs over cooked and I saw after why the sourdough toast was so soggy watching the cook pick out poached eggs by hand and all the water dripping on the plate. it was a Sunday on bank holiday weekend, it wasn't packed there were empty tables and it seemed lots of staff who were incidentally very polite and friendly. It could be so nice. we will not be revisiting.

Called in the shappen cafe as we were having a hr around burley. Carpark around the carpark only £1 a hr that's great. Food was ok prices not that bad considering what we have paid in other place ok you get that much to what we used to were we live. Toast was abit hard for me and the egg had raw/jelly (i don't now what it's called) on top needed to push it onto another plate other than that was ok. Tea come i a pot tbh you just don't see anymore that was great as there's like 4 teas in that. The place is very upto date and modern stylish seats outside to

Went here a few times and each time was excellent. Good service and food food. Coffee was nice and the hot chocolate was the best.

Stopped here for a cream tea for lunch. Was able to ring and pre-book an indoor table. Friendly staff and had a tasty warm lovely scone with great normal & chai lattes. Plenty of outdoor tables and clean toilets.

I can only think they were having a bad day. Chaotic, tables full of dirty plates, 40 minute wait for a bowl of soup. Victoria sponge dry, decaf coffees were just like hot milk. Dreadful.

I met some mates here, for breakfast and a coffee. This was my first visit and I was not disappointed, in fact, I was very impressed! Friendly service, from. Honey, who looked after us extremely well, great food and drinks too, with local produce, which is always nice. The cafe is clean and welcoming, and the prices are reasonable. I’m sure I’ll be heading back there in the not too distant future. Keep up the good work!

A great cafe with good coffee and very friendly staff. The lunch offering looked good and great cakes made locally. Cafe was very well decorated which made it very inviting.

Have had brunch, lunch and Friday evening Pizza here over the past 18 months or so and always amazing food, great service and incredible value for money. We eat out a lot both locally and in London and Shappen Cafe is right up there amongst the very best we’ve visited. Had pizza tonight and it was excellent, much better than all the pizza chains and most Italian restaurants you’ll find in the UK

Popped in for lunch with my son, while we were visiting Burley. Lovely and clean, made to feel very welcome. The food and smoothies were lovely.

Booked a table for the Friday pizza night. Lovely welcome, lovely wine and delicious pizza . Gluten free option available. Will definitely visit again ( recommend booking)

Popped in for brunch with the dog! Lovely place, staff were all so friendly, the food was fab (so was the coffee).. and they even gave my dog a doggy donut. FABULOUS! Highly recommend

Went in for lunch . Nice place clean and staff helpful. Nice menu well presented food and it tasted nice. We had poached egg on toast . Eggs were cooked to perfection. Coffee was delicious too. Nice selection of cakes .

The staff in this cafe are lovely! Very friendly and helpful waiter who was very welcoming. Great cakes and scones after a long walk. Loved the Halloween decorations!

Ordered a take out chocolate which they said would be 5-10 minutes after 20 minutes I asked waitress how much longer. She said it was on its way but still waited another 10 minutes and although the lad who served me apologised it didn’t make up for the wait. Dread to think how long wait for food would be!

So happy that we stumbled upon this little gem whilst on holiday! Beautiful food, lovely staff, very welcoming atmosphere and very family friendly. We had lunch & coffee and then stayed for an extra coffee because we enjoyed it so much! Thankyou Shappen Cafe, we will be back :)

10 of us met at The Shappen Cafe for coffee and cake in the morning and then returned a couple of hours later for lunch. We had pre-booked. Everything was perfect. The staff could not have been nicer or more helpful, clean loos and facilities, both inside and out. We would recommend.

We came here with our baby after first trying the dated Burley inn who didn’t have a high chair and then the Queens head who had paused serving food for a 30 minutes at lunch time. Neither were also very dog friendly inside. We almost left, but gave Shappen a go and we are very pleased we did. The staff were very welcoming. The food was delicious and fresh, kudos to the chef! Cannot recommend enough and glad we found it.

Good menu. Food Good. Nice staff. A bit unkept outside, could do with a tidy up. Get your monies worth on the cous cous salad ita a massive portion ! Probably could be smaller !

Popped in here for tea and cake with family four adults two children and two dogs, we ordered at the counter and shortly after it was all brought out to us, lovely hot Coffee's Nice moist fresh cake , the Carrot cake was absolutely Amazing. loved it, I couldn't find fault it, Will be back 100% if in the area again...

After another wet walk in the forest we stopped here for the first time. Lovely welcome from the staff (for us and our black lab). Enjoyed our breakfast , simple but well cooked accompanied by great coffee. The staff are lovely ,welcoming and efficient . Perfect pit stop after a long walk.

From main courses (either excuses for ingredients they have quoted but don't have or a cook with no head cover or gloves cooking and serving with bare hands in everything) to toasties (doorstep cuts with little filling) and desserts/cakes that are poor quality. Owner not hands on and staff sub par with dirty tables. One does not mind paying a higher price for quality, but this is disrespectful to the community. It seems to be set up to catch the tourists or other trusting passers by for profit only.

We sat at an outside table, I noticed it was dirty, along with the cutlery. When the cooked breakfast arrived, it was disappointing to see how undercooked the sausage and bacon was, I also asked for scrambled egg and this was barely cooked and slimy. Would not go back.

Excellent coffee. Our third or fourth visit here, and we have not been disappointed. Great staff, good service and a lovely atmosphere.

Located near the bottom of the village, stopped at this place for breakfast. Had an amazing tasting fried breakfast with latte. Space to eat inside as well as an outdoor area. Parking spaces outside. Recommended.

Ordered breakfast very disappointed bacon was like cardboard pre cooked sausages where tasteless for 12 pounds 95 it was very poor quality would not recommend eating here

Great food. Lots of local produce used which is very tasty. Their coffee is very good indeed. Worth going back for coffee, breakfast or brunch. Service very friendly.

Great cafe , friendly staff, tasty food We visit the Shappen cafe usually when we have been for a walk in the New Forest and have either a late breakfast or early lunch. The cooked breakfasts are tasty and the bread delicious. We have had the lunch menu too and the focaccia with pesto, mozzarella and tomato is great. Coffee is nice , they allow dogs both inside and on the covered terrace. Without exception the staff are friendly and upbeat. Weekends are very busy as it is popular.

We only popped in for a cuppa with our grand son. Be aware when ordering’Tea for two’ The teapot is very small with just one tea bag which we thought was a con being as it supposed to be for two people. I’m sure the staff do not share tea bags at home? Apart from that, the staff are really lovely but we won’t be going back because of the one tea bag and small pot issue

Every Thursday and Saturday the cafe provides a family night dinner service with all the meat supplied from the butchers next door. Beautiful food and a must visit!! Kids food is provided on request too

I had the toastie (amazing varied dressed salad with it) and my husband had the ploughman’s. Both absolutely gorgeous with decent portions. The ploughman’s was only missing a bit of coleslaw to make it perfect and our son devoured all his huge portion of sausage and chips. Considering he is a fussy two year old- I would think that praise indeed. The Dorset apple cake was moist and perfect with a latte. What a lovely environment and friendly chatty staff. We even said thanks to the chef on our way out! Bravo! Definitely worth a visit.

We came here for a late breakfast (11:30) after seeing the new renovations and being excited when we entered to see such a lovely venue. However, when our food arrived (a Shappen Breakfast and a Wild Mushroom, Avocado, Eggs and Toast), we were disappointed that the poached eggs were raw, cold and swimming in vinegar, leaving both dishes inedible. Along with the eggs, there was a puddle (on the shappen breakfast) of runny egg white, vinegar, water and oil (see picture). We also ordered a Chia latte and a Strawberry and Banana smoothie; the Latte was great. However, the smoothie was watery, separated and flavourless. After 1/4 of the dish, we surrendered and couldn't stomach any more; after 15-20 minutes, a (friendly and polite) waitress came over to check how the food was and offered us new food, but neither of us (although being hungry) had an appetite for any other dish from the Cafe. We were left feeling nauseous and disappointed that we had wasted £28.80 on an inedible breakfast and won't be coming back for food again!

Such a lovely place. Staff are super friendly to both people and dogs. Breakfast was really delicious, very tasty local produce and well prepared :) .New favourite place :).

Great place, the food was very good, the place is beautiful in itself, and the staff was incredibly friendly! My friend and I loved it, we rarely meet a staff that is so nice and all smiles! The café is very nice-looking too, there was just a great atmosphere. I highly recommend this place!

Had the best time at this cafe, it’s great. Visited twice this week, once for a lunch date with my baby and second time as a family. Dog and baby friendly. The staff are really really friendly and welcoming, food was great. We couldn’t ask for more! We’ll be back

Disappointed by the cakes, thought they would have been homemade for the price? They are very similar to the ones you buy in Costco and came in the same packaging. Was shocked to be honest . The cafe itself was lovely and clean and the staff were nice and friendly.

We had a fabulous experience at Shappen Cafe - and had to come back on our way out of Burley the next day. Lovely home made quiche and wonderful staff who were kind and understanding of our very hungry and tired toddler. We then visited for brunch - mushrooms on sourdough for me and my wife, and a kids breakfast for our daughter - all of which were great. The friendly staff make the place!

Lovely evening live music, bbq and delicious pizzas. Staff always so friendly and helpful. Dog friendly always so welcoming to our dog. Thoroughly recommend the goats cheese pizza!

Wow what an amazing cafe, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and amazing food. On holiday here and the best lunch we have had. We had Toasted sandwich, cream tea and the brioche with bacon - all very delicious and good value for money.
