Having stayed a couple of months ago, lovely hotel, strange that the hotel doesn't provide Dinner on a Monday evening, also having to pay an extra £12 for a full breakfast of which was unremarkable

Me and my new husband got married at the Montagu Arms. We decided to go for the exclusive package so that we could offer up the rooms to our guests. We also ended up taking up 18 rooms the night before our wedding. I have so many good things to say, where to start! The venue. Simply amazing, stunning, beautiful. You walk inside and you feel at home. It's beautiful with personality. In the winter they have fireplaces going and in the summer they open up all the doors to their gorgeous back garden. This venue is beautiful no matter the weather, so I knew that come rain or sunshine we would have an amazing day. All of our guests told us they really could see why we picked this venue. Rooms are so nice, clean and spacious and really have personality. The courtyard suites all come with a little bottle of sloe gin, which we enjoyed. The people We can't quite get over how wonderful everyone at the Montagu are. Loving, attentive, caring helpful. Absolutely amazing people. For the wedding preparations we dealt with Clara. She's so organised and really gets it. She helped us when we needed it and listened to what we wanted. She's really quick at responding and I felt very well looked after. Every time we went to the venue beforehand we were well looked after. We have had a few afternoon teas, a couple of dinners and stayed there once for my husbands 40th. Everyone was simply great. Having great people to look after us for the wedding was very important to me as I'm a bit of a doer. If I see something that needs doing, I will do it and I didn't want this on our wedding day, which meant that everything had to be taken care of to remove the need for me to feel like I had to something and they definitely came through on this. The food. We really wanted a slightly more casual feel to our wedding and opted for a bbq. Weather was amazing on the day so the bbq was set up outside. Everyone was raving on how amazing the food was. We had different types of meats, potato salad, salad, corn on cob followed by 3 different type of desserts. Tasted amazing and the timing of everything was spot on. In the evening we got bacon and sausage baps which went down very well with our guests. I see alot of people at Montagu who have been there for years and people have told me they love working there. This speaks volume for a company and that is a company I want to support. Another thing which is great with this venue is that it is a hotel and all of our family and friends were staying the night, which meant we could spend more time together, no need to transport people on the wedding day between places and the next morning alot of us simply hung around the hotel, enjoyed a few drinks, the garden and the sunshine. Other non-hotel venues will not be able to offer this. It gave us more time with our friends and family which I really appreciated. My husband and I had an absolutely amazing day which we will never forget. Our guests truly enjoyed themselves. We will come back, for afternoon teas (which I highly recommend), for dinners, birthdays and anniversaries. Couldn't ask for anything better. If you are looking for a wedding venue, look no further than the Montagu Arms Hotel!

I would like to recommend this beautiful hotel to anybody who visits the New Forest. Located in the Centre of Beaulieu, this warm welcoming hotel will not disappoint. The experience from start to finish was of the highest order from our welcoming through to our departure. We got the package which included breakfast where you could get either cooked or continental/ both, this was a great way to start both days. I cannot fault the rooms decor or onsite dining and it staying here gave me the feeling of being at a large cozy home. Although there is great walks and scenery at the Montagu arms, Another benefit to staying here included free use of the sister hotels facilities a few miles down the road which included a decent sized swimming pool, sauna & steam room. Overall, no complaints, and cannot wait to return in the near distant future.

Went with friends to celebrate our wedding. Had emailed the hotel in advance to explain we had 3 tables and would respect covid rules. From the beginning no welcome, no warmth, no pleasantries despite being dressed as a bride. Service very lack lustre, seated on sofas despite being told we would be in the restaurant and waited ages to be served. Sandwiches and scones were served separately and we were never asked if we wanted more tea or champagne. Very snotty approach from the mgmt who made us feel extremely uncomfortable and not valued as customers. Our friends insinuated it could have been due to our colour... surely not in 2021?? Would never recommend.

Attended an afternoon tea to celebrate a friends wedding. Coldly received no greeting or welcome to the establishment. The service was extremely slow, fragmented and dismissive. The afternoon tea arrived in stages with long interludes especially awaiting beverages. The staff were nowhere to be seen probably because there was a large wedding going on at the same time. We were never asked if everything was ok or would we like anything else. In fact the whole experience was unpleasant and I would go as far as to say hostile. I have no idea why . I have spent over 30 years in hospitality around the world and this establishment fails to even get the basics right where service is concerned, so disappointing . I have no desire to return and would never recommend it.

What a let down!Having arrived for afternoon tea with our young daughter. We were led to a small table with some very tired and uncomfortable sofas to sit on. We were then bought out an empty cake stand and presented the tea options. We were given a few mins to select our tea choice. We decided on our tea and waited well over 40 mins or so for the tea to come out along with a very disappointing plate of sandwiches which comprised of 12 fingers and a desert pot.By this time our daughter had already had enough of waiting.Having consumed said sandwiches we waited again for what seemed an eternity for something to come out, we ended up having to ask for extra sandwiches, the response given was along the lines of “we will see what we can do”Eventually we got an additional plate of sandwiches which was smaller than the first, three small cakes each and some scones but by this time we had all had enough. We asked for the remains to be boxed up and left.In essence Poor value for moneyPoor serviceUncomfortableThe food was nice but just a shame about the above points.

We were given a voucher by a friend for a savoury afternoon tea as a wedding present. They had specifically gone for a savoury afternoon tea as I do not like cake or chocolate. The Montagu Arms is about an hours drive from home but as our honeymoon had been cancelled we had the spare time and we were very much looking forward to it. When we arrived we were taken to a small table which was less than a meter from the entrance and more like a waiting room with people walking past carrying their bags.We ordered our tea from the selection and it was very nice hence the 2 stars. Next came some sandwiches which were also ok.They then brought out cakes and chocolate brownies, we pointed out that we had booked the savoury afternoon tea and they initially blamed us and fobbed us off by telling us we should have mentioned it when we booked and that there was nothing they could do now as everything was pre made in advance. We had booked by email and in the opening line of that email we said it was for the savoury afternoon tea. We were then offered a glass of champagne (still no apology though), but seeing as my wife doesn’t drink and I had an hours drive home ahead we declined. Again we were told there was nothing else they could do.I can’t speak for the food but the service was really disappointing. There was little effort to put things right and they’re general attitude was of disinterest and that somehow it was our fault. We left the cake and went home.

....... we recently had afternoon tea in this lovely hotel. The social distancing rules were all in place and we felt comfortable in the hotel. There is a good selection of teas and lots of teapot refills if you need them. The afternoon tea it’s self was a bit of a let down. Undercooked cheese scones, over sweet macaroons, and dry lemon cake. The staff are friendly, professional and very helpful. However, a bit of polish on shoes would go a long way, as neat uniforms don’t look good with scruffy shoes. We will visit the hotel again as it has that old world charm so lacking in other establishments. We just won’t have afternoon tea.

My husband and I have enjoyed a few afternoon teas but discovered mum had never experienced one so we thought the Montague Arms would provide something special. Unfortunately not so. We were seated on sofas with a coffee table which wasn’t the most comfortable for my elderly parents and situated in what must be a lounge area rather than in the restaurant. There was a lack of atmosphere here. The choice of teas was good but the finger sandwiches amounted to 2 per person and were refrigerated rather than freshly made. There was a choice of cakes and a mixture of fruit and plain scones - the fruit scones had 2 currants so not really. Jam was not homemade as described on the website with one tiny pot for 2 scones and a teaspoon of cream each. I felt there should have been tongs for the cakes, particularly in the current climate, and in order to box uneaten cakes to take home. On booking the hotel had asked if it was a special occasion so produced a plate with happy birthday written in chocolate and a slice of brownie taken from the cake tier! Not even something additional to mark the occasion. Staff were pleasantOverall I felt the afternoon tea was stingy and disappointing and not the birthday treat I’d hope for

My husband and I had an afternoon tea as a birthday treat at Montagu Arms. We were seated in the dining room where people were finishing off their lunch. Our sandwiches arrived with a pot of tea and after a long wait the the cakes and scones arrived - by this time the dining room had emptied and the resetting of the tables around us took place - I felt uncomfortable as if we were in the way. I am afraid I was disappointed after having such high expectations - food was fair. On my experience I am afraid I can only rate the experience as distinctly average - which is a shame,

Afternoon tea Thursday 3rd May. High expectations having heard good reviews. Started with an amuse-bouche?! Why? and the selection of sandwiches. Usual traditional selection. Coronation Chicken, Salmon, Egg, and Cucumber. Tasted alright but nothing to write home about. After the sandwiches, the scones and cakes were brought to the table with a fresh pot of tea. I know competition requires new ideas to be tested, but I prefer my sandwiches, scones and cakes to be presented simultaneously, on a cake stand, at the start. The cakes were presented forlornly on the table and not on the cake stand. Very odd. The scones were very good. Praise where it is due. However the cakes, (some of them) in my opinion were not made on the premises, but were bought in. I have had those cakes exactly the same in every aspect, elsewhere. Maybe the reason being there was just 2 tables booked for Afternoon Tea on the day, so economically, cake making was not viable on the day. 3 rather small cakes, do not an Afternoon tea make. I tried the Savoury Option as an alternative, and probably would not go down that route again. All in all, sorry Montagu Arms, we love an Afternoon tea, but not impressed.

Dire from start to finishI will start by saying that I am extremely cautious about writing a bad review as I know how damaging it can be but I wish that someone had done it before I paid £55 for two 'Festive' Afternoon Teas. Our booking was for The Terrace Restaurant.I will start at the beginning - we went into reception and couldn't find out where to go. We waited for a lady to finish her telephone call and she then found out where we were and showed us the way - not to The Terrace Restaurant but to a conservatory. Our 'festive afternoon tea' setting was two old, stained narrow conservatory 'sofas' with a conservatory very small 'coffee height' table and beyond that another 'lower' yes lower than a coffee table second table holding an afternoon tea stand. In this luxury hotel nobody offered to take our coats so we folded these up and placed them on the stained cushions beside us.A gentleman came and introduced himself and explained that he had put a heater beside us to take off the chill - we noticed that the restaurant was practically empty and we were left wondering why we had been seated in the conservatory. In the restaurant there were traditional tables, with white tablecloths - everything that you would expect from a luxury afternoon tea. I can't get across how difficult the seating made the event, we had to lean forward to eat as the table was so low, we had to lean over hot teapots to reach the food on the tea stand - not one thing resembled the four star experience we were looking forward to - and paying for.The tea selection was very small and very routine - I can honestly say that we have a larger selection in our kitchen cupboard - yes we like teas and have experienced afternoon teas throughout the UK and overseas so perhaps we do expect a higher standard than some/most.The tea and sandwiches came - nothing to light your fire, sandwiches from M&S are better and I could have had the tea in the comfort of my own home. Then there was an extremely long wait for the scones and 'cakes' - a waitress came this time, it appeared that we had been forgotten as she came hurtling in with everything. In this selection was the only festive element - scones in which the raisins had been exchanged for cranberries, this wasn't our observation but the waiters at the outset. We are very easy going with food and there isn't much we don't like but the desserts were odd and we left most of them. All in all our luxury, festive experience lasted around an hour - what a total disappointment. What should have been a lovely start to the festive season was dreadful.https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g503851-d253372-r546446029-Montagu_Arms_Hotel-Beaulieu_Brockenhurst_New_Forest_National_Park_Hampshire_Hamps.html#

A Michelin * restaurant with a celebrity chef and firing on all cylinders. Front of house staff as well-trained as those in the kitchen and so service and food were correct except for truly abominable coffee.Sounds highly recommendable; yet we found the experience rather less than memorable.Firstly, the staff were too anxious to please. If they relaxed a bit more and showed more confidence and less anxiety that would greatly add to the enjoyment of their customers who are not all restaurant critics.Secondly, we both ordered scallops and turbot. The predominant flavour of both dishes was remarkably similar and it was not of fish but of the now ubiquitous fusion style which some of us are getting tired of. A fine chef should bring out the individual quality of the ingredients he is cooking instead of submerging flavours in an all-purpose dreary oriental blend. We may be biased as we have just got back from Paris where we had been eating meals cooked with more individuality and flair. We also drank wine from lists of much better value. (in Paris!) There is little here under £50. We chose a White Bordeaux which was dry and austere and didn't match the turbot. The sommelier should have steered us away from it. For this style of cooking he needs to get in a few cases of Gewurtztraminer.

Homemade scotch eggs with molle yolks, black pudding, various pates, smoked salmon, artisan cheeses delicately sliced, 1 blue ,1 goats, 1 hard cheese, all served with artisan bread and butter, and fresh grapes. The chocolate ganache small cakes were sublime as were the vanilla and jam macaroons. The coffee and tea was served too early so was a little cool by the time we were all ready for it. I must firstly preface this by saying that for someone a bit older than myself and my wife (We're early 40s), they'd adore this place - instant five stars. And if I was just judging the hotel, five stars instantly. So, firstly the hotel: Lovely, old world rustic. They upgraded our room to a four poster because it was my wife's birthday which was a lovely touch and made her feel very special. Drinks in the lounge were a delight and the service was attentive without being intrusive. It was instantly relaxing and special. We chose the tasting menu as a treat and this is where it felt underwhelming. The service is very French and very formal. There was a distinct lack of flavour in the first three courses - a mushroom consome that tasted of watery mushroom tea and a scallop and rabbit dish that were fine but unexceptional. Our chicken dish was wonderful, however. The cheese trolley is a cheese adventure. The enthusiasm and knowledge of our server was fantastic and we got caught up with it. And the two desserts were fine, but again, nothing special. The menu seemed to go out of its way not to give you anything hearty or decadent - no red meat really or chocolate. It was pretty sterile and functional - the Switzerland of Michelin star cooking.Overall, the meal was OK and for the most part, the service was stiff, lacking in warmth, no smiles, no attempt to engage, just a general attitude that made me feel vaguely like I was back in school. Apart from the cheese guy, who was great. The dining room is a bit tired and in need of some decoration. But the couple beside us, who were in their 60s loved it. The whole silver service, sir/madam thing. I just would've liked more flavourful food and warmer service. So, yes. We much preferred the hotel to the restaurant. We'd definitely stay again, maybe eat somewhere else.

This was an unexpected (pre) Valentine's treat in the form of a 7 course Tasting Menu paired with a selection of Classic wines designed to perfectly accompany each meal. All of the dishes were custom made not available on the regular menu and each one was absolutely fantastic. I wont go into the detail of food itself due to the custom nature but let me tell you, if you going to try a high end food experience once - this is the place to do it.On a side note, our courses were further customised due to some allergens that we stated so brownie points for that too!The service was discrete, helpful and unobtrusive - exactly what you want when dining in an intimate setting.Negative points? Just the one, the wine waiter(s) descriptions of the wines were a little scripted but you could see the passion when you asked further questions around the wines they were describing so no lost marks there. All in all, a fantastic experience that everyone should try at least once in their lifetime.

We ordered the cheapest bottle, English white, at 38 quid a throw and it was horrible. Shame cos sommelier was lovely. Cheese guy gave a twenty minute lecture before serving rather ordinary cheese. Lovely hotel though. Very old world. Perhaps eat elsewhere?

Having visited this restaurant 3 times during 2015 including a nights stay I have to say this is truly a wonderful treat and a fine dinning experience at its best! I would highly recommend the Dégustation option with matched wines. The staff are excellent and friendly, they really know their customers and have remembered us each time on our return. My mother in law was most impressed! ;-)Beautiful grounds to enjoy an afternoon tea during the summertime too!An anniversary must!

Our lunch in the main dining room at the Montague Arms Hotel was a first rate fine dining experience. There was a very good selection of courses on the menu, and all four of us in our group were highly complimentary about our various selections. The delicious courses were all beautifully presented by considerate and attentive staff. Certainly a lovely experience to be repeated in the future! (We have used the dining room with great success in previous years on our visits to the area, but last year were disappointed to find it closed and, consequently, we had to make do with a decidedly average bar meal in another part of the hotel. Lesson learnt - check restaurant is open before visiting Montague Arms Hotel in December.)

A pleasant welcome, and cocktails before dinner in one of the lounges. I'd no idea what to have so asked for a drinks menu, but we were instead brought food menus and a wine list! A good margarita, though would have preferred mine without the salted rim. Nice selection of olives, nuts and freshly baked nibbles. I did feel, 'though, we were slightly rushed to order our food, preferring instead to have taken my time and ordered in the restaurant.A Michelin-starred restaurant gets my attention, good and bad, but I hope my comments are taken in the spirit intended. I can't rate the value as I did not pay!The dining room was large and impressive, we were shown to a nice quiet table with a view of the lit garden, but there was a curious, stale smell - possibly remedied by good ventilation?Beautifully baked fresh bread for the table (though some of it a little salty for my palate), an amuse bouche, good ham hock starter which I could have done with a bit more of. The white wine was served too cold, the ice bucket to blame. Between 10 and 14C means you can taste more of the wine. The red was fine.Excellent duck for the main course, beautiful gratin dauphinoise, and delicious raspberry soufflé, done to perfection. Perhaps a palate cleanser after the main course?Good atmosphere, on the quiet side, but which you would expect on a week night. The servers at table were all charming, courteous and a credit to the restaurant. Recommended.

From the pre dinner drinks and canapés the service and the food was excellent. I was told that as much of the menu as possible was locally sourced from recommended and award winning producers. The menu offered an interestng selection of enticing dishes for each of the courses. Everything we ate was fresh, well seasoned and bursting with flavour. Although we did not drink alcohol on this occaission the wine list was extensive though quite expensive. We thorough enjoyed our relaxing meal in the delightful dinning room of the hotel. It is clearly a favourite place for many locals as we overheard many guest being greeted by name and welcomed back as regular patrons and friends. The full meal was above average cost but for us we felt worth it.

We arrived mid afternoon after a lovely drive through the New Forest. We parked in the more than adequate car park adjacent to the hotel and were treated to a lovely walk through the gardens. During the day there are chickens and a small "allotment" garden. The remainder is of a more formal yet still relaxed setting with a variety of flowers and shrubs. I would think that this is a superb wedding/party venue. From reception start to finish nothing was too much trouble - just ask!Our room was on the first floor and was comfortably furnished and spacious. The en suite bathroom was also very acceptable and with walk in shower facility, w.c., bidet, and basin. At no time could I hear "our neighbours".We had booked for the 7 course tasting menu (anniversary treat) and it was an adventure. There is no menu but the dishes are explained when presented. The Sommelier had hand picked the wines to go with each dish and explained how each "matched". Our particular favourite dish was the scallop and I don't normally eat scallops - it was wonderful! Can highly recommend this menu as a special treat or for real "foodies".Breakfast was excellent with a choice of cooked dishes and a variety of continental foods. The yogurt was particularly good! We then ended our wonderful stay with a lovely walk along the river accessed at the rear of the hotel. All in all another lovely memory.....

What a fabulous place to stay, beautifully clean tidy with plenty of character. The staff were just a delight and everyone seemed to be happy and proud to work there. Our first room was a lovely four poster room, unfortunately it didn't have a walk-in shower which I had forgotten to request in my original booking. The next day we changed to a lovely bright fresh two roomed suite it was superb. A lovely touch was fresh tea or coffee being delivered to your room in the morning at a time of your choice. The only downside is the fact breakfast is not included in the price, and it was one price whether you had continental or cooked. Beautifully maintained gardens complemented the hotel perfectly. Nothing was a problem to anyone

This hotel is one of the best we have stayed in and compares with some of the very best country house hotels. The standard of house keeping is top rate although some aspects of the rooms are perhaps needing a little refurbishment. Showing a little wear and tear in places.Free morning tea and paper was very welcome. The facilities in the suite were excellent - lovely comfy bed, good television, bottled water, slippers, robes - all the trappings of luxury to make us comfortable. The gardens are a delight and the staff welcoming and friendly. The four for three deal was splendid and good value for money. The dinners were fantastic - see my review.A great place to chill out with loved ones.

The restaurant looks old world but the food deserved the Michelin star so it's a charming combination. The lounge and conservatory are also very English- an advantage when you are entertaining people from across Europe. The garden is lovely- looking back at old photos somebody has been not only busy but inspired! This was our 45th Wedding Anniversary at a restaurant where I had spent my college vacations serving as a waiter. I knew the food would be excellent as we had stayed at the hotel for our 40th anniversary, and in this I was not disappointed. In particular, the warm salted caramel fondant with cider lolly sorbet and creme fraiche was as good as it gets. The choice of wines was first class and the Nuits St Georges 2011 was predictably delicious, though it would have been better opened at the table. The service would not have passed muster for Pepe, my erstwhile head waiter. I was assured by the management that this was a one off and I have no reason to doubt that. In my opinion, it is always right to make the management aware of such matters, so long as it is done with appropriate grace and clarity. It is worth reminding front of house staff that the excellent professional work done in the kitchen can so easily be undone by a lack of professionalism at the table. That said, I have no doubt that we shall return to what remains a place good choice for a special occasion.

Took my son here to celebrate his birthday. Saturday lunch table d'hôte selections looked nice so we opted for that. The terrine and velouté starters were both on a par. The plaice and bacon belly were also very tasty. I settled on two courses but my son had the cheesecake and it got a thumbs up. Four stars well earned but no WOW factor so not a five star choice in my view. Parking was a challenge as there was a wedding locally and I think the car park was being abused.

The Montagu Arms deserves its Michelin Star status. Simply great food and good service in a relaxed quality environment. We had the tasting menu which was fantastic in terms of presentation and flavours. The Head Chef Matt Tomkinson is a very talented chap and delightful to talk to. As such we weren't in the main part of the restaurant but a separate area. The staff were attentive through out the lunch and always topping up glasses. On a hot sunny Friday we stopped at the Montagu Arms for a light lunch. We sat outside in a most perfect setting, the tables were not too close together and all situated to give guests the best view of the most wonderful gardens. The two salads we ordered were fine, but certainly not outstanding, but vastly better than the service, which was very slow and impersonal. The best communication we had was with the very helpful and friendly gardener. What a great shame that such a perfect location was not enhanced by good old fashion customer service.

We asked our lovely waitress if the chef would cook them rare and his response was that's my interpretation of rare so we asked for medium rare and both steaks came cooked to our liking. However, they were all full of gristle and were not nice. The dessert of ice cream was pleasant but, overall, we were very disappointed.

L'hôtel montagu arms hotel à beaulieu, new forest - Hampshire possède deux restaurants.

As visitors from Australia attending a family birthday lunch/reunion, we found the ambience both relaxing and unpretentious with the warmth & welcome of log fires and staff in equal competition. Our party comprised of 14 guests in a nicely appointed private dining room complete with a separate bar area/lounge and access to a beautifully manicured garden area. The meal selected comprised of 3 courses with a choice of 2 for each based around a traditional roast lunch on recommendation. The overall coast p.p. proved reasonable and deemed exceptionable value. The chef's 'hunter/gatherer' food sourcing certainly hit it's mark. The true flavours of main meat and vegetables literally danced on the palate with perfectly cooked textures rarely experienced even in the most discerning of restaurants. Unfortunately hap-hazard plate presentation of main courses did little to compliment a perfectly cooked meal. Pork loin crackling was butted against steamed kale so no light crunch there, a single carrot looking like a snowman's lost appendage on top of the kale also marred any visual appeal. Fine dining went to pub grub in a blink. To finish on a sweet note, the apple crumble tart & hazelnut brownie were so overloaded with a sickly sweetness, almost too euphemistically to the point that most desserts of our party remained uneaten. My tart pastry was very thin, overcooked with a jaw-breaking caramelised crunch (I suspect icing sugar used to make a pate sucre) and even the 3 mean drops of vanilla bean custard did little to soften it's texture. Coffee was served immediately so a bitter blessing after sweet disappointment. Whilst food quality, cooking methods and standards of attentive service remain outstanding for the Montagu. The kitchen needs to monitor and enforce culinary criteria/standards of awards 100% of the time. Laurels can become a pain if rested on all too frequently...same goes for adverse reviewing!!

The waiter noted it down but his plate came out with deep fried potato on it. we told the waiter who removed it then we had to wait for one potato to come from kitchen which was a while coming so he had nearly finished his meal when it arrived. The food when we did get it was good. Forget the coffee though. It was the weakest coffee we had ever seen or tasted. You could see right through it. Must do better with that.

We stopped by for some refreshing drinks after a long walk, with a view to having some bar food or nibbles thereafter. I had wanted to return after last visiting a decade ago.We ordered drinks for adults and children and retired to the beautiful garden. From our view we could see the barman serving a succession of other customers arriving before he embarked upon our order making it take really some time to come to us.After consuming our beverages we addressed the bill.£8.50 for an orange & soda! More than it cost for a glass of wine or a beer. And for children (clear when we ordered). When asked if all was well, I explained that the venue was delightful, and one should pay to enjoy it somehow, but there was clearly a pricing issue with the non-alcoholic beverages, even if the orange had been freshly squeezed. I received a gallic shrug, although not from a frenchman. He couldn't have cared less.Star retention is about ubiquitous service I thought. Strangely enough we left, and never moved on to food, never to return again.

We never got as far as trying the food.We went yesterday for afternoon tea, but sat around for 10 minutes in the garden, while others who came after us were served first, mainly because the tables right outside the waiter station were occupied when we arrived, so I apprehended a waiter and told him we had been waiting long, and his response was not " OK Sir, I'll follow you back to your table and take your order", or even "I must apologise, we have been very busy, where are you sitting, I'll be over there in a jiffy". No, it was "I'll tell ????? (I Can't remember the name he used) you are waiting" and turned on his heel. Needless to say, neither he or her(?) showed up within the next ten, so we were out of there! As my wife was exiting the foyer the concierge, instead of taking note of her complaint, suggested we went over the road to the Old Bakehouse Tearooms, which we did, and where we had excellent afternoon tea!

We were able to choose the tea of our choice and there's a guide on the back of the menu to recommend teas with particular sandwiches etc. I chose the traditional English Breakfast and my mom had the Darjeeling, both of which were replenished half way through our meal to ensure we had fresh hot tea throughout. We had a delicious meal in the garden! We were then treated to an unexpected Appetiser of lemon posset with raspberry coulis. It was delicious and a great way to cleanse the pallet before our sandwiches and cakes arrived. Because it was tea for two there were exactly two of each item which was much appreciated as we both wanted to try everything! The macaroons were lime & basil- absolutely delicious and refreshing at the end of the meal. The scones, clotted cream and strawberry jam arrived a little while later...I think my mom would've appreciated them a bit sooner, but they were worth the wait! The manager came over to us to check on our meal and thank us for visiting, and then checked back later on and the bottle of sparkling water we ordered was given to us complimentary. It's the little things that go along way! The traditional afternoon tea is only available when booked in advance, so bare that in mind if you're visiting the New Forest and want to treat yourself! Regardless of the season I would recommend the Montagu Arms for tea because the have a lovely restaurant, lounge and conservatory where you can sit back and enjoy the afternoon.
