Shanghai Takeaway in Wokingham

We thought the Chinese where we live (rural Scotland) was bad. Surprised that the food was very similar here. Bog standard stuff

Lovely food , would defiantly order from Here again. We had chicken balls, beef black bean cashew nut dish, prawn chow mein and prawn crackers. Was around £22 pounds which I thought was reasonable.

After exhausting all of the Chinese takeaways in wokingham and being thoroughly disappointed we found The Shanghai. We have been greatly impressed and pleased with all of our orders over the past three months and will continue to order. This takeaway is just by the Fire service station in wokingham. Definitely worth it, recommend ordering in advance for weekends and special dates. Thank you Shanghai Team.

On the basis of good reviews I decided to give this place a try. I phoned I order through and went to collect it. I was actually impressed by the takeaway containers they look quite posh with their plastic lids! Portion sizes are generous although this Chinese is also a little bit more expensive than my local. The food was a little underwhelming to be honest but in a strange way I was kind of pleased because that meant my local is still better and I wouldn't have to drive out here to get my Chinese fix! The chicken curry tasted a little dumbed down and oddly had whole green beans in it. The sweet and sour chicken had a different type of chicken it was a different shape to what was in the curry the sweet and sour sauce could have been a bit more plentiful. Overall it wasn't bad - it was good rather than great I don't think I'll be back, as the Dragon House in Birch Hilll is better than this place.

Have been enjoying takeaways from here for a long time but on Saturday night the food was so disappointing. The king prawn balls had soggy batter and barely cooked. The crispy duck was not crispy .

Having not had a takeaway for the last 18 months was very disappointed in the quality. The Sweet and Sour King Prawn balls were hard and dry, not up to previous standard. The Chicken and pineapple was bland, did not enjoy the meal at all,and threw most of it away. Will not be going back there any time soon. Will carry on doing what we have been doing during Covid - going back to M & S for their £10 takeaway box, much more appetising and much much nicer.

First meal from here and it was hot and delicious. Very friendly and I will definitely order again..

Staff here are always very friendly and polite, portion sizes are very good and it is one of the cheapest takeaways in the area. Some of the best Chinese takeaway food i've had. We have never had a bad experience with shanghai and order more often than I am happy to admit! Does make you wonder if the bad reviews are just from jealous competitors?

Really like this restaurant there service is always impeccable and very friendly staff. The food portions are generous, and so far our orders have always been fulfilled correctly. The flavours are delicious and we have never had any issues. Despite Covid they made it extremely easy and were very efficient.Very fast turnaround and everything was piping hot.

I have been to this takeaway multiple times and it never fails to impress. The portions are very generous and the staff are very considerate. When they give you the time when the food will be ready, it is ALWAYS on time. There are some miserable people who give this spectacular family business bad reviews, which is so unfair considering that I would give every single experience with Shanghai 5 stars. One time, we got one different packet to what we had ordered, but I couldn't really complain because it was so delicious! I am really looking forward to getting my next takeaway!

Very popular so wait times can be 45 to 60 mins. Order by phone if you can get through. Well worth the effort and patience though. Sometimes order not quite right, but nothing is bad so even if not quite what you ordered, its still worth it And to be fair, rarely goes wrong anyway. Never actually managed to eat a whole meal and I am a big lad with a hearty appetite

Extensive menu with all food freshly cooked. It is a very busy takeaway restaurant so order your food in plenty of time.

Shanghai has finally opened post lockdown, and it was good to see they were busy. Extensive menu. Their Starter box has salt and pepper ribs, chicken kebabs, small spring rolls and prawn on toast. Good value.

First visit in a few months (wasn’t open during lockdown) fair to say the quality for me has remained the same which is great! Staff friendly and helpful, it’s great to see the place open again! Looking forward to the usual suspects of crispy chilli beef, Kung po chicken, Singapore rice noodles and duck!

Terrible restaurant. After waiting for an hour was given completely wrong order. They refused to deliver correct order even though they admitted it was their mistake . Refused to refund the money and they hung up phone . Terrible service . Will never use again . Beware !!

Food is very good and served in generous portions. The only problem is that they are victims of their own success with wait times st the weekend running up to an hour. If you are willing to wait the food you receive is worthwhile.

After waiting about 2 hours for a takeaway and getting home very much later only to find that the food which was ordered was nothing like the food in the containers.

This is a family owned takeaway which I’ve been going to for at least 8 years. The food has never been less than awesome and they work hard to cater for dietary needs. I don’t like added starch or msg in my food and they always cater for my needs and create light and seriously addictive food. The main reason I’m a Shanghai addict is the prawn toast. (See picture). It’s light, meaty and not greasy like others. Once you’re hooked, you will judge every other against it. It is the absolute best of the best. I one thing I struggle with is when they shut for their holiday, I can’t eat Chinese food from any of the other takeouts. I have to go cold turkey during their holiday!!! The people there are lovely, their food is awesome

Had a lunch at work for the staff and purchased several of each of the dinner boxes. The food was fantastic, in great quantity and a very reasonable price. We will definitely be back.

We have used this Chinese takeaway on two occasions now and on both occasions have paid for items that have not been included.please tell me it's not rocket science for the owners to double check your order before letting you leave thinking everything is there before you drive ten miles home. Tonight we paid for a large pancake roll and my wife had duck which came without its sauce. Although the food is passable the service leaves something to be desired. How many others have found this I'm sure it helps their profit having food payed for they don't include. Would I use it again very unlikely. Make sure before you leave you have everything you paid for.

Fresh, great food served fast. Friendly staff. Our food was ready in 15 minutes. Sometimes it's hard to get through on the telephone but still worth the wait.

Normally pop a bit further down the high street but this has leapt to the number one spot ! Really great takeaway with lots of choice and all cooked very well . Chicken and cashew nut in yellow bean was an absolute delight !

We had a lovely mixed starter box, special fried rice, crispy chili beef, and king prawn with cashew nuts tonight. The staff were friendly, helpful with ordering and very polite. Everything was fresh and very flavorful. We are looking forward to our next meal!

This Chinese takeaway is the standard by which I judge all other Chinese’s! My family started getting a Chinese from here every week when I was 8, and at 28 now I still go as often as I can. The rice is always perfect consistency, meat dishes come with perfect amount of sauce in them, they add free prawn crackers, the beef is always tender and the duck is never dry. I can’t eat Chinese anywhere else now because it’s not Shanghai’s.

you simply can't get better take away food than this. I always go for set meal for 3 or 4. 3 feeds 4 and 4 easily feeds 5 people with large appetites. The price is low for such amazing tasty food. THANKS

We always enjoy their takeaways - and the reaspnable prices. The duck with vegetables is packed with duck and could actually do with more veg! Friendly staff. They get very busy Fri and Sat evenings so be prepared to wait.

This is our favourite place to go for Chinese. The service is very friendly and always quick. The portions are huge and we love the duck with pancakes, never any bones or fat. We always feel like we have had value for money.

Great food at a reasonable price however they cannot cope on Saturday evening. We phoned 24 times to find them always engaged. They had a wait time of over an hour and yet fail to mention this to customers when they make an order, so you take a seat or find a place to stand and get left there waiting none the wiser.

A good bet for when you don't want to cook - decent food, good value. Gets busy when commuters arrive & Friday eve so we always order ahead and pick up. Friendly staff.

First time here. Tried on recommendation from a friend following some disappointing meals from another place nearby.Very happy with what we had, not at all greasy as some others have been. Tom Yum soup good, Crispy duck very good, lots of flavour. Meal was ready for collection at time promised. Free prawn crackers.

Mediocre. The food is ok, ordered a few times from here in the past 3 years as close, on a number of occasions we have been given in the wrong meal and had items missing which is a faff to sort out. Not the worst food but by no means good...a bit of a last resort.

We've been using Shanghai as our go-to Chinese takeaway for some time now. The food is very good, and we think it's the best in town. We did, on occasions, use other places when we were too lazy to leave the house (Shanghai don't deliver), but each time we regretted not going to collect our food ourselves. We won't be using other places anymore - we've made the mistake enough times.If they offered delivery (even if it was expensive), this place would get 5 stars easily - the quality of food is excellent for a takeaway and the prices are reasonable too.

I first tried this takeaway in November and had a very long wait for my food. I read the feedback posted here from the venue and decided to give it one last try. The food couldn’t be faulted last time and I’d hoped that maybe the service and turn around times had improved. Sadly I was wrong.Part of the enjoyment of a take away is the stress free ease of quickly getting food. It would have been quicker to go to a supermarket and pick up a meal to cook than wait for a takeaway from here. I called at 6pm to order my food and I was told it would be an hour. Disappointed, but looking forward to the food, I went down 50 minutes later only to have to wait a further 30 minutes for my food, a total of 1 hour 20 minutes from order to collection all in all. During the time I was waiting, other people came in, ordered food over the counter and left with their food before I did. Other people had been sat waiting for their counter ordered food for close to an hour. There honestly doesn’t appear to be a systematic way of taking and processing orders. If you’re calling to order, the person you’re speaking to is the same one serving the many customers in the shop. If you’re stood in the shop, you have to wait for the assistant to process telephone orders before attending to you. The food is good, and that cannot be faulted, but this place honestly isn’t worth the hassle of a takeout. I’d rather drive further afield to a takeout.

Top takeaway in my view, very clean with top notch food at sensible affordable prices, only bind is to get there via the round robin one way system, car park both sides of the road though so easy to park

We found this gem of a takeaway a few months go and think the food is excellent and incredibly reasonable. I'm also pleased to say that if you visit the National Food Standards agency, they score 5/5. My daughter is a vegetarian and they always know who we are by our choices which just adds another dimension to our takeaway relationship. We order from here not only because of the wonderful food but because of the wonderful staff. Order early on a Saturday - it's always packed out.

Well this is the second time I have eaten here, am a very fussy eater certainly when meat is involved however this is hands down one of the best Chinese establishments locally.. I live over in farnborough and have used this twice whilst visiting family however I will not hesitate to drive all the way back over too Wokingham to pick up Chinese in the future. Keep up the good work!

A friend in Crowthorne asked us over for a takeaway on Saturday night. As we are Wokingham based, they asked us to collect a pre order on our way over. Our friend had phoned the order through at 5.30pm and was advised it would be ready for 6.30pm. I popped in an hour later at 6.30pm expecting a quick payment and to be on my way, but it was CHAOS in there. I counted over 20 people waiting, some had been served, some were waiting and others like me were waiting for a phoned through pick up. There was one lady covering the phone orders (the phone was non stop and she prioritised the phone over those in the shop), issuing food, taking orders everything. Our order had not even been prepared when I arrived, but I was assured it would only be a brief wait. A whopping 25 minutes later, I was finally on my way. I would not use this place again. The joy of a takeaway is the convenience and the food. This was just pure stress and I parted with £35 for the joy of it. Considering Hakka is closed at the moment, and how business is clearly booming, you would think they could organise themselves better than this and take on extra staff.

We've tried lots of local Chinese takeaways but this is definitely the best. The crispy duck is delicious, super sesame prawn toast and all of the dishes we have tried have been flavoursome without be too greasy. The other big advantage is this is the only Chinese takeaway we have eaten locally that doesn't result in us feeling very thirsty or having an uncomfortable tummy later (which I think is testament to the fact they avoid using too much MSG). We had some family over and placed a large order with Shanghai and everyone commented on how nice it was. The only downside is there can be a bit of a wait sometimes - but I'd rather wait and have good fresh cooked food.

I have been a customer of the Shanghai for 15 years and it is hands down the best Chinese in Wokingham. The food is consistently brilliant. I never had a long wait (and I never phone in advance). The staff is friendly and welcoming. If you have any special requirements, they are more than happy to sort it out for you (e.g. no MSG, low sodium etc) I have been to other establishments in town, and found their dishes lacking in vegetables, saturated with food dyes or claggy with cornstarch - never in The Shanghai. It's fresh, the veggies are crispy, the food is always hot and yummy. Five Stars from me!

This was the 2nd visit since moving to the area. 1st visit was average.2nd visit resulted in being told a 50 min wait in the phone. On arrival to pick up the take away it was chaos. Many unhappy people. We had to wait another 35 mins. Was offered no discount or even free prawn crackers.Got home (5 mins away) and starters were cold and remaining meal pretty average.I could have gone bought the ingredients and prepped and cooked it quicker.Will be going elsewhere from now on.

We ordered a takeaway from Shanghai on a Friday night. We were told to come and collect it in 30minutes. When I arrived the queue was out the door. On a positive, this suggests that the food is good. However, I had to wait a further 45minutes before the food was ready. Annoyingly, payment had already been taken when I was told that the food was not yet ready. Otherwise I would have left.The takeaway was fime. No better than other Chinese take-aways in Wokingham.

Friendly pleasant staff. Food often ready within ten to fifteen minutes of ordering. Food quality is good. Try the Salt and Pepper spare ribs and the Special Chow Mein. The food is always hot, and good value.

Having lost faith in our old Chinese, delighted to have discovered Shanghai! Best Sesame Prawn Toasts around, lovely meat in the dishes and packed full...& steaming hot! Friendly too. Been several times in past few months and each time, all the family have enjoyed very much. Thanks Shanghai!

The guys are very helpful and often busy so you may have to keep calling through. They always say that they will not add MSG if possible to the dishes I have ordered and the food is a good standard for the local takeaways. Current Chinese takeaway of choice.

Perfectly acceptable. Tasty although chow mein was a bit gloopy and the sweet and sour chicken balls weren't crispy how I would expect from a batter bit nice touch to pop in some prawn crackers free of charge.

Phew....found an alternative to the now awful Haka and must say the food was as good as Haka in its prime, before it changed ownership. Really helpful staff and food excellent. Very busy when we went to collect, a good sign, and when we drove past Haka only one person inside, not a surprise based on our last experience. Thanks Shanghai, we will be back.

In common with other reviews I too was looking for an alternative to the Haka as it has gone downhill since change of ownership and I think I've found it with the Shanghai. Maybe, taste wise, it is not quite as good as the Haka of old but it's still pretty good and will certainly be returning for future takeaways. Hadn't tried it before as didn't know of it's existence tucked out of the way on Easthampstead Road. In common with others I found the staff at the Shanghai pleasant which is in contrast to the previous to current staff at the Haka where dealing with the slightly frightening woman could be a bit of an ordeal!Four stars for my first visit to the Shanghai...maybe will be 5 in future - maybe other dishes will be more flavoursome.

The lady taking your order may appear to be on her mobile phone during you're order but the service is quick and the food is tasty and good value

The food is always prepared and cooked fresh that day (unlike most other Chinese takeaways in Wokingham). They are more than willing to change the dishes to your preferences. Would not go anywhere else. The food is always fresh and good quality. The staff are friendly too!!!!

This was the first time we tried this takeaway and we were impressed. We needed to find an alternative to Haka which has gone downhill in our estimation since a recent change of hands and I think this is it. The food from the Shanghai was tasty and nicely prepared, the portions are generous and good value. Vegetables were nice and crisp and not overcooked.I think we have found our new regular Chinese takeaway.

We've been shopping around since Haka changed ownership. This is easily the best we've found locally and on a par with the Haka of old. Recommended.

We used to use the Haka all the time for our weekend takeaway treat, but it has changed hands and quite frankly it has gone downhill and not as good as it used to be. So on recommendation we tried the Shanghai and the food was just as good if not better than the Haka used to be, we are now converts and over the moon that we have found our new weekend chinese take-away.

This takeaway is consistently good. I particularly enjoy the noodles which have a nice smoky taste. Quick and efficient service.

As far as unhealthy takeaways go the Shanghai is consistently good tasting and good value. We've visited here over 5 times, the food is decent and way better than any other Chinese takeaway in Wokingham. Don't waste your money on the others.

Just great food every time. Tried the rest over the years but always come here now. Service excellent and normally just 15 mins wait for collection.

Generally, we don't do takeaways and consider myself a novice, but this was good value for money. We had a set menu for 4 people and there was easily enough food for 6 people. All the food was of good quality. I rang them 10 minutes before and as promised it was ready and waiting for us. Pleasant staff too.

While it has a 5 star hygiene rating, the quality and taste of the food is very average. There is plenty of competition in the area and both Beijing and Haka have the edge.

Having read the favourable reviews we tried this takeaway. Sorry to report we were very disappointed with standard of the food which was unremarkable and very bland indeed. It was a pity because the lady who took our orders was so polite and friendly and the service was very quick. Perhaps the speed that tells you something about the popularity of this establishment.

By far the best Chinese takeaway for miles , we drive from Sandhurst to get our takeaway from here, fresh well cooked food and plenty of it and not to many additives , our friend who was visiting also said how nice the food was and one said it was the best crispy chilli beef he had ever had, my favourite is the chicken cashew nuts and yellow been sauce so so good .

From my experience the best Chinese takeaway in Wokingham. From the very friendly service from the lady on the counter, to the quick turnaround on orders and the fantastic food quality. Be prepared, portion sizes are large, but everything tastes fresh and full of flavour. A must if you fancy a quick Chinese.

The first time we got a takeaway from Shanghai, we ordered must too much, their portions are huge, but have been there a lot of times since, and would thoroughly recommend this place, such good value and the young lady on the desk in front is lovely

Thanks to the two reviews listed, we decided to try this takeaway. It is actually next to Papa John's pizza shop just off the high street.The food was incredibly good, restaurant quality! We can highly recommend the spare ribs and crispy beef.All in all great food, fantastic value for money (5 mains and 2 sides for £26).

Use this takeaway regularly and always get a warm welcome. The staff and food are first rate. Usually have the same meal but the shredded chilli beef and chicken chow mein are great.

We like the food here and sadly seem to go for the same thing every time! Have over the years tried most dishes and I think the crispy shredded beef is by far the crispiest I have eaten. Delicious Singapore Noodles, I like them extra hot - not a problem!
