Disgraceful over priced food. Watery curry and overcooked noodles. Beef tasteless. All of itvwas bland - Would certainly not return for takeaway and would not recommend. Waste of hard earned money.

Have used this place for years, regularly, but we’re disappointed with recent delivery. We rang to order and the lady who took our call wasn’t very helpful at all. Firstly she couldn’t tell us what was in any of the dishes (why don’t they say a bit about each dish on menu, as we don’t know what’s in everything), and when we ashes she said ate didn’t know, she wasn’t the chef! Then we put the order through and realised we’d ordered too many rice dishes and could we cancel one of them and she just acted like she couldn’t understand us, made a lot of huffs, puffs and eventually it was such a painful salience we just said “oh never mind we will keep the rice” and she giggled and said “ok”. Not great customer service this time! The young girl who normal answers is lovely and so helpful. Frustrating when you know somewhere can be good, but one person ruins it! If she doesn’t know what’s in her restaurants dishes….get to know! And if she can’t remember, ask the chef! Not like it was peak season!

Found this Chinese online after reading reviews and was not disappointed! Easy to access on the high street with parking and fairly priced. Food was very good especially the sweet and sour sauce and the curry sauce! Would definitely come again when I next visit Newquay.

Had the Shanghai Ribs, 1/4 duck, seaweed, chicken balls, yung chow rice, soft noods, crispy chilli beef, sweet and sour pork and Shaolin Veg - holy smokes the whole meal arrived hot, really tasty. Highlights were the Ribs and Veg so moorish we want more next time!!! So tasty. Lovely service! In all honesty, we eat here every week it’s amazing!

We decided to call for a takeaway to take back to the van with us, there was a couple in front of us who placed an order and I then moved forward to place our order. The lady behind the counter completely blanked us and started to walk off I asked her if I could place an order with her. The lady rudely responded with " it will take a while so cant take your order" and just walked off. We left at this point after how rude she was to us and went further down the road and got a completely different response and the staff were lovely and friendly, we certainly wont be calling again I work in hospitality and there customer service certainly needs looking at.

Picked this place based on other reviews and glad we did. It’s hard to spot - no shop front just a sign in the street and a set of stairs. Food is really really good - proper Chinese takeaway. All the usuals were good (curry, sweet & sour etc). The only slightly disappointing dish was the lemon chicken (hence 4/5). The sauce was a bit thin and not very lemony plus it was served on a bed of lettuce which overpowered the chicken. Everything else was delicious. Note it’s currently take away only.

It was nice as a quick takeaway but not expecting much more. It was ok but the curry sauce was very bland. The chow main was very nice as was the chips but the chicken curry wasnt great.

Can see why this is the best Chinese in Newquay, well worth the drive, waiting time was about 45mins from phone ordering, safe and hygienic waiting area

Very natural flavours. Others in Newquay come close, but they normally add too much sugar and soy sauce to dishes and have a very unauthentic taste to them. Also it is slightly cheaper than the others.

We eaten here regularly for nearly 15 years. Food is Always superb. Great menu to choose from and great friendly staff. We're locals and wouldn't eat anywhere else. We have been using the delivery service and it also is superb. Food is piping hot. Highly recommended

They delivered a meal short and then asked us to collect because they had no drivers, I wish you had a 0 star for this dump, poor customer service horrible manger and crap staff

We decided to collect our takeaway. Couldn’t fault it. Duck was pre shredded and plenty of hoisin and salad and pancakes so tasty! They threw in a lovely chicken complimentary dish which was so kind. The chefs special noodles were also a bit hit. I’d definitely recommend.

During my stay at the local Parkdean site I ordered a timed order for 8:00pm it did arrive slightly late however the food was worth the wait and the portion sizes are not small.

Ordered the set meal for 4 and added a few dishes, they were happy to substitute from the set meal. Very nice, no issues with any of the dishes and tasted lovely, recommended,

Have used these as a takeaway over the years and even happier to see that the are now delivering. Lovely friendly staff, food arrived on time and was perfect as always. They even sent us a free complimentary dish along with free prawncrackers. The food is just the best. Have tride the other chinese in town but there is no comparrison. Yet to eat in the place which is small and some would say needs an upgrade but I think it adds to the atmosphere of the place so even if collecting a takeaway do not be put off as the food is bang on!

Collected this myself and it was ready for me at the arranged time. Fresh ingredients, generous portions and great value. This was better than our local takeaways! 5*

Just ordered a Chinese for delivery and can honestly say I’ve never met such a rude delivery driver as the driver who delivered our food over an hour, he abused my mum and sister with foul language on the phone and then on arrival at the driveway, we had dishes missing and food was average at best. The driver was completely rude and I could call him a lot worse, my family have had a great day and this experience has ruined our day. I’m waiting to see the owner’s response? Food arriving over an hour late without a phone call to explain what’s going on is not good enough, avoid restaurant like the plague.

Take out- Very nice & tasty, good quality food, free crackers & salt/pepper chicken. Would definitely return if we wasn’t here on holiday!

We had a delivery tonight. I called at 5,spoke to very friendly person and I arranged to have food delivered between 6.30 and 7. It was delivered at 6.45. The food was hot and fresh and we were given an extra dish with a note saying "here is a free dish to thank you for your custom. Take care and stay safe" which was a lovely and appreciated gesture. We were also given 2 bags of free prawn crackers. The food was very tasty and all four of us enjoyed it. Thank you Shanghai for yet another yummy meal.

Second week we’ve been and had a delicious meal at Shanghai express service friendly from the girls and the food was amazing found out that the owner Lenny is back in the kitchens so food is good again .Lenny and staff are now as one .

This unappealing and rather grubby little Chinese restaurant, situated above a pet shop hides a bit of a secret. The food is actually quite good. Service was also good. There is no denying it needs deep cleaning and redecorating but if you can look past that you shouldn’t be dissapointed.

Thought we would try somewhere new despite mixed reviews. First view of the steep stairs to the 1st floor and small reception didn't give a great impression. We were shown to our table straight away and order taken for drinks as soon as we were ready. There was a good selection of dishes and drinks. The food was delivered quickly and was extremely tasty with decent portions. The manager was polite and helpful. Prices were average but very worth while. Definitely worth a second visit.

We traveled to Cornwall for my husband's birthday and on our first night in Newquay we decided to go there, we looked for the reviews and as they were good we went.Well, we weren't disappointed at all, within 30 minutes the restaurant (which is above a shop, so you need to enter from a little door) was full, constant people are collecting their takeaways well.Quality of food was really good, good portion as well. We took a sharer to start, crispy beef and duck for main.The only downside point is that they are rushing things, so we didn't really feel that we could relax and take our time, but food and price I give 10/10

3 of us visited and really enjoyed our meals, it’s a small restaurant that also does takeaways and deliveries, the phone did not stop ringing whilst we were there, which speaks for itself. Recommended

First time visiting Newquay & fancied a nice chinese. Look at reviews online & this restaurant was top of the list for good reviews. Loved the food & service was good. Thankyou will be back.

We visited the shanghai express last time we were in Newquay 2 years ago and loved the food. It’s still just as good ,we had 4 main courses and they were all excellent and swiftly served. The restaurant could definitely do with a face lift and lick of paint and perhaps a new sign outside as it’s easy to miss but the important thing to us is the food and that is worth going for and it’s very reasonable.

What can i say 7 of our family went for a chinese at 8pm without booking and the restaurant found us a table without no fuss.

Ordered a take away meal for the family. Ordered a veg chow mein with mushrooms. Got home and the dish which should have been vegatarian had chicken in and no noodles! Consequently nice family meal ended with one member having no meal spoiling whole event. If you're happy for a Chinese lucky dip this is your venue. As for other meals okay at best

Me and my partner came here for a meal. It had a lovely atmosphere and the staff were nice and helpful. The chef was lovely and valued all his customer's feedback. The food was amazing, the beef was melt in your mouth and the chicken was amazing. Great value for money and quality food, would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a nice meal. Thank you!

Went in with high hopes as my partner has been here many times before and sung it's praises but we were nothing but disappointed. The food was bland. The service was substandard and they had atrocious phone etiquette when taking delivery order. The restaurant is dated and not particularly clean. We will not be going back.

I came In on a Tuesday to order a takeaway with my two children, the two girls behind the bar were amazing so friendly and just made me laugh so much. They were brilliant with my two young children aswell. The restaurant itself needs a good refurbish however the food it’s so tasty !! Def recommend

Luke warm duck but only in places ......the rest of it was cold. Chicken & cashew nuts had 'chicken' slices in it that we have never seen before - slimy and opaque in places. Service very slow. Overall cleanliness poor. Don't waste your money!

I found this place on trip advisor as it was the best rating we gave it a go. Food was fantastic, tiger beer was ice cold and the service was great. Will be back before the week is out 👍👍

Myself and partner decided to visit this "chinese" restaurant after spending most of the day out, we were hungry and after seeing the first couple of good reviews we thought we'd give it a go..

Had a sit down meal. Crispy duck was served cold. Pancake basket came out with no pancakes in it, just a cold saucer ( I Kid you not) Pancakes then arrived on a side plate - cold. Had to ask for side plates to eat off of and had to pinch cutlery from the neighbouring table as we weren't given any.

The food was quite good and plentiful. The first appearance is not good. You have to walk upstairs the carpets are filthy and worn. Surely it wouldn't cost too much to recover, maybe with something that could be washed? Inside seemed to be a bit disorganised, I dread to think how they would cope if busy.

The place was a bit dated but the lady who greeted us was friendly and had a lady in training who was very nice. Food was very nice and came out quickly but we were the only people in there. Only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 as needs doing up a bit

Just no style - feels like a dirty front room. Food was dreadful. Luke warm - just looked unappetising and tasted even worse. Would not recommend. Or visit again

Uninviting, shabby, dated - all words you could use to describe first impressions of this restaurant. But scratch beneath that surface, and you will find great food and service.

Ordered a delivery at 20.40 last night, called them at 22.30 for 20 mins with no answer. No call from them to explain if there was a problem. Just left me with no explanation and no food. Wow what a great service.

Food here is average, not horrid by any means, i just felt it could be a lot better. The main reason for the 3* is that the restaurant is in a shocking state, it also really lacks any type of atmosphere. Staff are good and attentive.

Well there is not 1 thing to fault, yes it looks tacky and out of date, but OMG do not let that put u off, we were staying at hendra holidays and popped here for a takeawy we got about 8 dishes and was only £28 for a damily of 5, the food was so hot fresh and tasty, and when we come back to newquay we will be coming here 100% again loved the place, and the staff were amazing with the kids

Waited over 2 hour. Spoken to like dog poo and cold food., blamed it on driver... food was shocking.. service was 0 out of 10 wouldn’t feed it my dogs what a waste of money..:

While holidaying in newquay we had a takeaway from Shanghai express. Very tasty food, good value and more authentic then we expected. Staff very friendly and the food was cooked fast while we waited. Would definately recommend.

This is a really good Chinese restaurant. The food is tasty and plentiful. Chef Lenny is a real friendly character. Highly recommended.

When in newquay we always have to eat in the shanghi.it wouldn't be the same if we didn't.staff are awesome.Chef Lenny is just the best.Food is out of this world cooked to perfection.Nothing is too much trouble for these guys always happy to help.Just love the Shanghi Express.

Don't get a takeaway often it is a treat for us. So after the the lovely meal we had from here in July.. I'm really disappointed. Special chow main very watery..chilli garlic beef the same. Sour taste to some of the beef too. Very off putting..so had to leave it.

Nice warm friendly welcome, love pms like it can do with a good make over but don’t let that put you off , the food is lovely , this is our second visit in a week to this Chinese, would recommend this as a great place for a takeaway , the price is very reasonable as well , the wait for the food was very quick as well ( must admit we where the first ones in ) but that said when we went for the first time the waiting time was not long , if you find yourself in Newquay this is a must try place , 10/10 from me.

Our third visit and still has good as the first time 3 years ago. The food, the service and the quantity is spot on. We had a party of 9 and all the food came out together. The chief did his usual greet at the end of our meal which is always nice as it make you feel that little bit special. Can't wait until January to visit again

Truly exceptional Chinese. Food is great, staff are friendly, situated right in the heart of Newquay. We tried quite a few dishes from their menu and nothing let us down, thoroughly enjoyed every single bite :) highly recommended. Well done guys.

Visited twice whilst on Holiday. Food is reasonable and tasty. Service slow and looked like takeaway orders taking precedent. The decor is awful

We ordered our food and were told it would take half an hour. So we took the children across the road to the amusements. When we returned the food was not ready and upon asking how long it would be. The young girl replied ' I don't know'. We waited a further 30 minutes before our food arrived. Food was hot and tasty. But not sure we would return again due to the wait.

We decided to try this restaurant after reading the trip advisor reports. Yes the outside and inside decor looks dated.The waitress took our drinks order and gave us the impression she didn't want to be working that evening. When the drinks arrived with one short and she had not realised that we ordered 5 and had only 4 drinks on the table.Maybe the second waitress should have noticed but she did have her hands full playing with her hair. Four of the meals arrived in good time but we had to wait an extra 5 minutes for the fifth onel.The portions are on the small side so you won't need a seafront walk after your meal.We gave this a 2 due to the fact that compared to the Chinese restaurants we have previously visited the the food is at a 2 out of 5 standard.

Me and my boyfriend chose here at random. We were served by a lovely waitress called Keisha very friendly and attentive and really added to the nuisance of the place. Oh and the food was divine. pork satay is amazing bask for spicy if you can handle it

Quick and easy, but good quality food. Gave us the feeling we were having a Chinese experience, without costing a huge amount. The mix menu we ordered lasted 3 days. Very good service, I would highly recommend it.

Upon arrival at Shanghai express we were a little uncertain as to whether or not we should enter due to the external appearance of the restaurant, I also noticed a couple of other dinners showed the same reluctance, however we had read great reviews regarding the food so decided not to judge a book by its cover and give it a go. We were not disappointed the service was good, the food was great and the prices were very reasonable, I would definitely recommend this Chinese .

Sweet and sour chicken nice ,but Singapore chicken was over cooked and bland it was so over cooked it was stuck together oh and burnt

As a local tend to stick to the same takeaway but thought i,d give it a change. All I will say is i won't be going back to the usual. Chicken curry was amazing and sweet and sour chicken Hong Kong style spot on. As the reviews say don't look at the decor proof is in the eating. It was good. If parking was easier i would have given five stars.

As one reviewer says dont be put off by the decor, the food was really good, the hot and sour soup was the best i have tasted. Make sure you are hungry when you visit, the portions are very generous, also staff really friendly

Called here on the reviews we read while looking for a Chinese. Don't be put off by the out side that looks scruffy with a side door leading upstairs. Then you are greeted with a very tired interor which is why I knocked a mark off. Because the food was delicious we had the banquet for two and everything we had was well cooked,tasty and good potions as usual the beer a bit on the pricey side. If you can ignore the outside and the interior you won't be disappointed. Their is a good choice on the menu something for everyone. Yes we would call here again when in newquay.

I wish this place was open all day because I went on my last night in Newquay and just wanted more. I ordered 3 things to takeaway and even after the 15min walk back to where I stayed it was still hot and delicious. Would definitely go back

We visited this Chinese last year when staying near Newquay so decided to go again this time. It’s even nicer than last time! We had the sweet and sour chicken and the sweet chilli chicken with salt and pepper chips and it was all cooked to perfection and very moderately priced. Will definitely return :)

I had today a schezuan beef with white rice, the food did not look appealing, but dont judge the book by its cover, it tasted amazingly good.

Doesnt look impressive on the outside but the food is amazing. I had chicken and sweetcorn soup it as loads of chicken in it. Good size portions. The main was really tasty. Would definitely recommend.

After reading trip advisor for a Chinese restaurant ,Shanghai express got great reviews so we gave it a go. We agree with what was said about the stairway to the restaurant not to let you be put off. We never booked on a Friday evening & we got shown to a table by a lovely waitress who was very polite, a credit to the restaurant. We both had chicken & mushroom soup, both had loads of chicken &mushrooms; in them. I had chicken chow mein & my wife had chicken curry. Both were filling & big portions. I would highly recommend & will use again if/ when in Newquay again

Literally the best chinese I have ever had !!! My top 2 favourite dishes are the ribs and chicken satay!! Would always recommend here :)

Where do I start.Amazing food,friendly staff they cannot do enough for you.Chef Lenny is the best,He greets you with open arms very jolly.If there is anyone in your party who do not like Chinese food Lenny will cook anything for them,thats why we love him and his food.Please give this Chinese a try you wont be dissapionted.

Ordered £45 worth of Chinese takeaway after travelling down to find a black medium length hair in one of the plates of food, and none of us have black hair! (Photo to show evidence). Gutted! Ruined the meal for us all, as put us off!

We came here to eat after reading the trip advisor reviews. It did not disappoint, foodwise it was outstanding cannot fault it. Yes the entrance is not appealing and the decor could do with a revamp, plus it’s a little cluttered around the little bar area, but we were happy to overlook this for the food and we are happy we did. Would definitely come here again, all the staff were friendly.

Was a bit dubious going in as looked v shabby. Couldn’t have received a Warmer welcome with our 3 kids. They served us quickly which was very helpful as the kids were getting tired. Food was amazing. We literally ate everything that was served to us, even the kids who sometimes can be fussy. Made to feel v welcome and wouldn’t hesitate to return when in the area again

Five of us ate here after a days drinking in town and had a very good meal. The food was excellent and the service was good.

Was on holiday, fancied a Chinese take away.....looked for recommendations and found Shanhai Express. Was almost put off by the entrance but once inside the delicious smell and gorgeous looking food was everything we wanted! Delicious food ....don't let entrance stairs put you off !

Fast and efficient service, food came quick and was well cooked and flavoursome. Was served on a candlelit hot plate which kept it warm. Prawn crackers on arrival a nice touch. Reasonably priced soft drinks. The decor was not as bad as some reviews make out but prepare yourself for 70s carpet and yellow walls! Waitress was very friendly, it was like going round your mates for a Chinese!
