Shanghai Brasserie in Arun

What’s happened? Ordered a takeaway and this is nothing like the old food. Noodles, rice seem the same but the meat… everything is considerably worse. Gutted to see this place move into bland microwave zone. Let’s see if this is the end for me here…

For years we’ve got a takeaway from the Castle Inn and it’s been fantastic but lately I’m a bit disappointed. One free bag of prawn crackers with a £60 order that now has 10 crackers in, it used to be huge! Buy an extra bag and it’s about £3!! And still tiny! Rice and chips have become extortionate, dishes have gone up to £8+ for chow mein to chicken dishes and quality is still good but this makes it a very expensive take away now especially once you add on a few bags of prawn crackers. We’ve had items missing or wrong in the past and it’s always been rectified but this seems to be an opportunity to con people out of money, watch out for the new price menu. £4 for chips! £3 for 10 prawn crackers 1/3 of the nav actually full (see photos) £6.50 for broccoli and garlic! £6 for seaweed! I’ve never minded paying £60 for a Chinese but our normal order has gone from £60 to £80+ for smaller portions doesn’t sit well with me. Very disappointed in this decision as we’ll now go to a different takeaway. Such a shame as we used to love this place.

Not good sweet n sour sauce could not eat tasted of nothing Pork balls coated in to much batter and I mean to much batter Special fried rice very oily needed help finding the bits in it Roasted steamed dumplings stodgy Lucky crackers all soft Prawn crackers nice Sorry guys sweet sour sauce is the worst I have ever tasted So Not ordering ever again

We had used Castle Inn for many years but our last three orders came missing mains, starters sauces etc. This time we went to collect and asked them to be extra careful. We spent over 100 pounds and when we arrived we asked them to check that everything was there. They assured us it was. On arrival hone, we were missing two starters, all the sauces, the lettuce for the wraps and there were no chopsticks - even though we asked for them. My husband was incensed no drove all the way back to them and really told them what he thought. He was told that they were working with cheap prices so sometimes things might get overlooked. They also said they were very busy. They offered us a fre bottle of crap wine which we refused. No apology and no refund given for time wasted. The quality of the food was disgusting and I have to say we threw most of it in the bin. Lesson learned NEVER GET FOOD FROM THERE AGAIN.

Really lovely food, but even better than that - great service. had a minor issue which was sorted very quickly and with no need to prompt for anything. Will continue to use again and again. Thanks for the lovely meal!

Had a Chinese take away from here , every dish absolutely caked in salt absolutely vile . We only use this place occasionally as no where else delivers there food is up and down like Katie prices knickers

Read some mixed reviews, some very good, some complaining especially about the wait. Well, we can only comment as we found - which was excellent. It seemed the food arrived (to our not easy to find address) almost before I put the phone down. The order was complete with some rather nice touches. The quality was everything you could wish for.

Just had a takeaway from The Castle. Told me to collect at 6.45 & they were spot on time. I had Sweet & Sour King Prawn Hong Kong style, Chicken with Cashew Nuts & Plain Noodles. It was absolutely, & I mean absolutely, gorgeous. Nuff said.

Got a takeaway for my girlfriend birthday last night this is the only Chinese we know that can do gluten free you have to give 24 hours notice but it was worth the wait. Will use again fantastic good and service

Hello, i called earlier to speak with the owner, whoever picks up the phone on your side has absolutely terrible manners. Terrible manners keep swearing at me, tells me to f off, f-ing retard, go and f myself several times. i am absolutely horrified with this kind of manner, you might make decent food but you might want to learn some manner. hopefully thats not the owner who i was speaking to, I demand an apology from the owner or you can keep this for call your customers to see.

Was told it would take an hour, which it did. Tasty stir fried Noodles, wasn't greasy at all, well spiced Szechuan Veg, crispy Veg spring rolls + damn tasty Satay sauce. All in all, we were happy!

- Ordered at 18:00 and was told delivery would be at 20:00. - 20:00 came and went and no food or message from Shanghai Brasserie was received. - Shanghai Brasserie left their phone off the hook so we couldn't contact them all night. - Went to bed at 23:30 with no food delivered. Even went outside to check (but surely they'd ring the doorbell) - Woke up in the morning with a takeaway on our door step. No door bell rang. Disgusting way to treat paying customers.

Ordered food to arrive (delivered) for 9.15 but after I'd paid was told it would be 10.15 - which had I been told before I'd paid I wouldn't have proceeded with the order and collected instead. It's now 11.25, no sign of the food, the text update promised by Just Eat didn't happen and - despite being closed - the restaurant phone is still engaged as it has been for over an hour and a half. This was supposed to be a NYE treat and now I have all the faff of getting the payment refunded. My advice to anyone thinking of using them is DON'T.

Can not understand this place - last Saturday quite tasty and hot - Yesterday cold, burnt chicken chow mien, tiny sweet and sour pork, left us very thirsty it must have been a different chef????

We thought it was a standard pub but when we stopped to ask if they did food, we discovered it was a Chinese restaurant & take-away. It still looks like a pub but with some Chinese decorations. At first we were the only diners but it was a Monday, then other customers arrived who seemed to be regulars. The restaurant was very busy with take-aways. We had duck to start, then sweet & sour chicken with rice, and chilli beef with noodles. It was nice and I wasn't thirsty after, as you often are after Chinese. If I were in the area again I would definitely return. Service was included in the bill.

Collection time kept getting delayed, chow mein was so greasy, duck was the opposite and was so dry, very disappointed and waste of money!

Tasteless cold food and well overpriced drinks £2,5 for 0.33 cola never again We have ordered take away with just eat and they delivered quickly

With some trepidation I placed an order at 5.30pm for delivery at 7pm, and at 6.55pm the very friendly delivery driver was at the front door! The food was hot, tasty and plentiful. Chopsticks, prawn crackers and fortune cookies came as complimentary. I was very impressed and will certainly order from here again.

MIne course came out before the starters and only 2 tables so not busy, wine cooler came 10 mins after the wine was on the table. Starter looked like it had been frozen, so asked to take the rest of the order home. Better chinese elsewhere would not go back very expensive

Also known as the Castle Inn. Have to say , Best chinese delivery we have had in a long while . Usually have a delivery from somewhere in town, and our usual has gone dramatically down hill . This was lovely and we really enjoyed it .

Went here for dinner as we were down this way for a friend's wedding the night before really enjoyed the food all hot good service very tasty

Spotted the place turning in to the stables at the horse place, and we are so glad we did. Amazing food and a very warm welcome. I'd like to say we would be back, but live 300 miles away in Yorkshire! 😢

Took my daughter there with her 7 exited friends for her 10th birthday party. They were amazing, and made us feel incredibly welcome. The only downside was that the kids loved the food so much there was none left for the grown ups after!

As a family, we had a lovely meal at this wonderful restaurant the other night. We loved the atmosphere, and Raymond really looked after us. He even asked the chefs to alter some of the dishes to suit our dietary needs, very thoughtful. Delicious and very tasty and healthy Chinese food. We are definitely going back.

I came here on a date and was extremely impressed! The atmosphere was spot on and the food was amazing. Despite being busy, the service was very friendly and fast. I would recommend this restaurant in a heartbeat. I will definitely be returning.

We go regularly, food is very good, Staff polite and friendly, I chose to have my 60th birthday party there, we took the whole place over for the night and it was just great in every aspect.

I've been a regular customer here for many years ordering both in-house and via delivery and have never had a bad meal. The food is good quality, has always arrived nice and hot and within the time scale given. Would recommend.

You kinda know when you walk in to a pub or a restaurant and it’s empty that things could be bad

Ordered large meal as treat. Awful. Crispy duck chewy and cold. Chicken balls batter like damp cardboard. Salad with duck limp and chewy other dishes tasted as though they had been reheated several times before. Will definately not be reordering.

We booked a table of 6 for my sons 14th birthday, we did say at the time of booking it was for a birthday, there was no need to book as we were the only ones in there!

We had a Groupon offer coupon and went for lunch with friends - a party of 4. The voucher entitled us to a starter & mains. The starter was a Chinese Tapas consisting off chicken satay, spare rib, 2 spring rolls, seaweed, 2 pieces of prawn toast - EACH - and all was freshly cooked and very nice! There are several main dishes to choose from - and all come with your choice of rice or noodles. The portions were huge - freshly cooked and very, very tasty! One of our party is a very fussy eater... but he cleared his plate! The man who served us was a very friendly & made you feel welcome. We will definitely go back..highly recommended!

We went for a lunchtime meal with Groupon voucher, lovely starter and a large portion for the main, plenty of choice highly recommend. Service was great. We will definitely return.

The Castle Inn Pub & Shanghai Brasserie Hickstead - Good food, good ale and good company. Lovely local pub & restaurant serving good drinks and delicious Chinese cantonese cuisine.

Live in Burgess Hill, had fiends round at the weekend and thought we'd get a take away delivered. Had collected from the Shanghai Brasserie (behind the The Castle Inn) before but had never had a meal delivered.

Restaurant area in back of a pub. Not the most impressive of venues, but the food, service and quality absolutely great. A group of about 20 of us at two large tables. Food presented on big platters in the centre of the tables. Six courses: chicken and shredded jellyfish, lobster, razor clams, crabs, small clams, fish. Because two of us don’t eat shellfish, they spotted this and gave us hot and sour soup and deep fried pork. For about £30 a head, the value and quality was great. A good 4 stars. Recommended.

Este es un restaurante en el Castle Inn. Fuimos allí para el almuerzo con mi esposo y realmente lo disfruté. Tuvimos una oferta de cupones groupon y esto le permitía un entrante y los platos principales. El primer plato era un chino de tapas que consiste de dos rollos de primavera, algas, dos tostadas de gambas, costillas y pollo satay y wow fue tan deliciosa y una gran porción. La red consta de unos cuantos platos. Elegí el pollo al curry arroz con huevo frito y este era muy sabroso y de nuevo buenas porciones de tamaño. El chico que nos servía era muy amable y te hacen sentir bienvenido. Recomendaría este lugar y seguro que volveremos.

Excelente comida china para la colección ordenados (entrega estaba cerrado) y debido a una confusión que no pude recogerlo antes de que estaba cerrada. El personal que trabajaba esa noche fuimos a nosotros mismo. Excelente servicio que va más allá de la llamada del deber! Sin duda se merece una promoción!

El Shanghai Brasserie es un restaurante con excelente comida. El restaurante está adjunto a la Castle Inn y ha estado alrededor de un par de años. El personal es amable y el servicio no es apresurado, así que no te sientes como si estuvieras en una línea de producción. La decoración ha cambiado pero con un edificio antiguo se debe esperar que la singularidad de la edad y disfrutar de ella. La comida estaba muy bien de precio y las bebidas no demasiado caro. También puede obtener un un modo que tienen y, de nuevo, la comida es excelente.

Super food excellent friendly service. Would definitely recommend it. Very patient with my elderly disabled father.

Pork Dumplings, Chicken Satay to start very tasty, Kung Po Chicken and Schezwan Chicken most delicious accompanied with Fried Rice with Beef. Would definitely recommend, a great find, have been a few times before and should have already done a review, but better late than never, tucked away off the main Road, Raymond the Owner made sure customer's were being taken care off, a big thanks to Wilson for cooking the meal to perfection, thanks to Adam who made sure our drinks were topped up and Lottie the new lady who served us well. Good food, Beer and on the way out you can grab a Chupa Chups Lolly.

They are not interested in reviews as nothing has got any better since our last vist a few years ago . Staff , although helpful, were wearing jeans and black shirts not dressed for a Chinese restaurant experience . Where have the Chinese girls gone...

Because it was a Groupon offer we were directed to the bar area (not the restaurant) which was just like an old fashioned pub with no atmosphere and not in the slightest like a Chinese restaurant. Although very hot and served in good time, the starter looked pre frozen and out of a packet. I then had chicken curry, the chicken being quite stringy. I was very disappointed and won't be returning. Surely the purpose of Groupon offers is to promote the business and give a good impression so that customers would want to return. We were not impressed!

After a day trip to Brighton we passed off at this place on the way home yesterday. We were incredibly impressed by the meal we had so much so i felt compelled to write this review. One of the best Chinese meals i've had in a long time and fantastic value for the quality of food. We had the set menu with the addition with some lobster with ginger and spring onion that we were told was fresh in that morning. All dishes were fresh, tasty and arrived at the table promptly and well presented. Staff were friendly and couldn't do enough to help. I really couldn't fault this place and would highly recommend it.

Went here for my mums 60th, the staff were excellent they even had birthday tune to play when we sang. The food was lovely we had a variety of dishes all tasted wonderful. After the meal we all went into the bar for after drinks.. Will be visiting again!

We went here for lunch on a Friday. The staff member looked as if she just got out of bed. We were lead to the bar area which was extremely filthy. I could've just walked out then! Food was ok. But the food came out very quickly, so it seemed like it was pre made. Real shame! As the pub looks like it has a lot of potential.

I had to write a review on this place as I feel it is my duty after having two absolutely disgusting orders, and one order not turn up even after a two hour wait and after I had paid via card over the phone!The first order we placed, I had ordered a vegetarian dish and my partner had ordered prawns. When it arrived I found a rib bone (with no meat on in) mixed in with my vegetarian dish!The second order I placed was as a last resort one evening after a long day at work; my partner ordered chicken and I again opted for vegetarian; this time my dish and his both had a prawn in it!The third and final order I placed with them never turned up. After a two hour wait I called them and they apologised and offered to make my order again. I said to refund me the money and that I would not visit or order again. They had a bad attitude about the whole thing even though it was their mistake. Do not order from this place; it is a health hazard for allergy sufferers and has poor quality food.

could not fault the food and service both were excellent ,will be certain to go again we got the Groupon voucher which was real value ,food was very tasty and hot ! What more can you ask for

I bought a Groupon for lunch for four but after reading some of the reviews we were in two minds about going but were glad that we did. It was a Monday lunchtime so rather quiet but both the service and food were very good.

After receiving a take away leaflet for "The Castle" and also hearing its advert on the local radio boasting of its fine dining etc, I thought I would give it a try. Am rather confused as it appears to have two names but is one and the same. My original thoughts were that if it was as delicious as the advert promoted I would then consider going there for a celebratory meal (its not exactly on my doorstep so it would be a chance I would have had to take therefore a delivered take away is less of a risk). The food turned up at a luke warm temperature and have to admit I would agree with another reviewer that it all resembled a variety of brown hues. (I could choose a better word here but would not wish to offend). There was enough food for 2 adults and one child and it cost a reasonable £35 but that is were the good points stop. My daughter initially praised the noodles but then that was because they were at a temperature she could eat them and they had nothing added to them, she soon though got fed up with the blandness. The ribs were a congealed matter that looked like they were possibly reheated. The duck had definitely seen better days and the rest of the food I was unable to identify. Each to their own but I would certainly not recommend dining in this establishment. Very disappointing.

the most disgusting takeaway I have ever seen. We ordered a delivery for three people and everyone was left hungry and disappointed as we dare not eat the food in the boxes that arrived. A complete waste of money.Awful food and service this place should not be in business. Why on earth do they trade under two names...something to hide?

We had lunch at the castle inn which is the pub part of this restaurant and I cannot tell you how unwelcoming and filthy this place is. From the entrance to the was etc etc. I wouldn't want to see the kitchens

If you think you`d like your dinner served in various shades of brown & all stuck together then this is the place for you. In their own words "A gastronomic experience like no other" no truer word has been written as be assured that once you have eaten here you will certainly not liken it to any good experience you have ever previously had, in fact quite the opposite. What tops it all though is the amazing customer service because if you dare complain that the meal is not up to scratch you will be asked to provide a history of all previous places you have eaten and then told regardless of what you have been made to explain that they will be keeping all of your money as that is their policy...Magnificent.

We went for Sunday lunch. You could never run out of food at this restaurant. The quality was fantastic. Probally best to forget breakfast as they will keep making as many dishes as you wish to order so its not sitting around.

We had a great family meal over at the Shanghai brasserie... The restaurant was quite so we're very dubious...the service was brilliant the food was far better than any other Chinese in the local areas! I will be going back as this was a great meal..

We visited a week ago. The meal came to £60 for two. Very poor value for money considering the food was below average. The restaurant was very cold, proven by the fact that the waitress kept her jacket on throughout service! !

I visited this evening with a large party. Bill was £345 for four people and we only had two spring rolls and small bowl of rice with few bits of beef!!!! Complete rip off and the food wasn't even great!!Avoid!!

I have not written a poor review before and to be fair if it was the food that was poor, i would have assumed it was a bad day for the chef. My complaint was the value for money. We had the Hor d'oeuvres for 2 persons which were £9 each = £18 however, we were served 2 small spring rolls, 6 battered king prawns, small crispy seaweed and 2 portions of crab noodles. The duck was fine but the 2 main courses were poor particularly the chicken satay from the sizzling section which was 2 chicken satay kebabs. With rice and noodles and a couple of drinks our bill was over £72 and we were in and out within an hour and half!

There were alot of us & the staff accomodated us all.......Lovely food & atmosphere. The restaurant had put together a long table for us which was great.....x

We've not only visited this restaurant on several occasions, we also use their home delivery service and I have to say the food is equally excellent whether you dine there or at home! The staff are definitely on the ball and do all they can to keep the customers happy. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area, or - if you live around here - try their free home delivery service!

Visited this establishment twice in November mid week. The staff in the Pub & Restarunt were customer focused, friendly and could not do enough to make sure our meal was pleasant. The food choice is very good and everything was cooked fresh. Wa had a starter of Hot & spicy chicken wings and Squid and Barbecue ribs which was the best we have ever had. Followed by chow mein and Fillet steak cooked in tea sauce which was devine, steak was melt in the mouth. Great restaurant!When my son and I are in the area again we will make sure this is on our visit list.

Only restaurant in Hickstead (apart from little chef!). Food and service were great. There was 9 of us overall and most had a banquet set menu. Lovely. Definitely recommend

we had a very good sunday special menu, all you can eat, there were seven of us.We had a leasurley meal anjoyed by all of the three generations.a good family lunch.

The restaurant certainly could do with some updating, but is a very acceptable takeaway choice (this review is based purely upon our takeaway experience)We ring our order through and the timings have always been correct, with little waiting upon arrival.On Friday and Saturday night they are very busy with takeaway orders. What they lack in personal service, they make up for in efficiency. Last time we ordered they were taking an order on the other line.... They said they would call me back in 5 minutes (I did not know the landline number from where I was ordering - at a friends) they called me back as promised, using the number from their phone system. I couldn't fault that! The food comes in proper foil containers and I would describe the portions as generous - the noodles are filled to the brim :) The food is of a good standard and unlike some other chinese takeaways we have tried is not full off grease and extreme food colouring!

We always get our Chinese take away from here - the food is always lovely (obviously not the healthiest meal but tastes great.) They don't use MSG in some dishes so it's healthier than usual too. The noodles are always crammed into the foil container which is great value! Service usually with a smile & quick to cook so not a long waiting time.In my opinion the best Chinese take away around Mid Sussex.

Both my wife and I decided a nice local Chinese would be great as we don't go out very often due to a young child, on turning into the car park that was poorly lit we couldn't believe that on a Thursday evening at about 8pm there wasn't any one else eating after being seated, next to a calor gas heater that was positioned closer so cast even more fumes over us we ordered. The mixed starter for two wouldn't even have done for one, consisting of 2 very small BBQ ribs'2 even smaller spring rolls and one piece of sesame toast, and not forgetting the pile of indelible seaweed! Or mains came out egg fried rice, chicken noodles sizzling satay chicken and Kung po chicken, well the only thing I can say is the rice was ok, as we're the noodles as they actually had real chicken, as for the two main dishes it looked like something that had been poured from a tin and the use of reformed rubber chicken was about the limit, the total meal lasted for aprox 45 mins of which 40 of those was to long,, two. J2o drinks, 1x starter and 2x unedible mains came to the grand some of nearly £60.00 of which was the compulsory service charge, please don't waste your time or money, not even a take away ............

Recently ordered the takeaway for delivery. Order arrived missing items and for the £45 I paid did not feel like I got value for money portion size or quality at all. In general very under par meal

Having read the 1 revue of this place I arranged for four of us to try it last night,what an experience.The car park was pitch black and full of potholes with 1 car in it,that should have been a clue.We had a drink in the pub while we waited for our friends,2 customers.What a dreary place.When our friends arrived we went into the restaurant,it was empty,another clue.We were greeted by a Calor gas heater in the aisle which provided a cheery glow.After perusing the menu we found the prices were far higher than on their web.when we queried, this apparently is their take away pricelist.The B menu is £22.50 not £16 each,Decidedly average food one course looked like a plate of lumpy grey sick but it did come with 4 lettuce leaves so that was all right.A glass of Coke cost £2.45 and the final bill for 4 was £108.Never again.

Been eating here for several years. The front of the building is a pub (Castle Inn) and the rear is a chinese restaurant. Both are owned by the same family who have been running the business for years. Its next to the Hickstead show ground and can get bery busy when an event is being held.The fish options and specials are usually very good as the owner goes personally to market in Hove to buy fresh fish. If its not on the menu ask as they can often cook it for you, although the menu contains nearly all the options you would expect.In the bar you can order from a limited bar meal menu, which includes various bar favourites.They are probably the only restaurant that will deliver food throughout the Twineham and Wineham area.Its well worth a try.
