Not entirely sure why the GM man handled me and threw me out the place. Was on the phone to a friend who we have lost. Was on the stairs, he told me to move rather aggressively. Fair enough I did. Gave him a thumbs up. Then he ran after me and threw me out. Told the bouncer I was swearing at him 🤷♂️ Hope this chap is in a better place soon. Because that was not a reaction of a person who is in a good place. Id say avoid until this guy sorts himself out a bit.

I visited Shakespeare's twice this week, it used to be a Ward's pub when I lived in Sheffield in the 1990s. This Georgian pub was closed for 18 months from early 2010 , refurbished, and reopened in July 2011, and since winning CAMRA awards. They sell up to 9 real ales, many from local brewers, over 50 bottled beers, and a fair few crafty keg beers.

If you're looking for a delightful evening at the Shakespeare Pub in Sheffield, let me regale you with a tale of what you might encounter: Adam, the bartender. From the moment we crossed the threshold, Adam's demeanor was a curious blend of disdain and annoyance, like a tragic Shakespearean character who took a wrong turn and ended up behind the bar. Ordering drinks felt like a scene from a comedy of errors. Adam's huffing and puffing could have blown down a house of cards. His attitude was so sour that lemons would blush in his presence. But the real climax came after we paid—Adam, with the subtlety of a Shakespearean villain, turned to his colleague and dubbed us a "horrible group of people." Ah, the eloquence! Adding to the charm, Adam seems to have a deep, emotional attachment to one particular shirt. Every time we've visited, it's the same shirt, as if he's starring in a one-man show where the costume budget was slashed. To the management: Adam's customer service skills could use a rewrite. If working behind a bar doesn't bring him joy, perhaps he should exit stage left and find a role more suited to his temperament. Until then, I suggest potential patrons avoid this pub unless they're keen on experiencing their own Shakespearean tragedy.

We were here for a gig & one of my friends began to get upset telling us something, something actually quite upsetting to talk about (instead of the bar staff coming to check in on my friend - I work in a pub this is how I would have handled the situation - they just kept asking us to move down from the main bar, WHICH WE DID DO, but this wasn’t good enough and the staff had to make silly remarks about us still being in the downstairs area. When the manager got involved his attitude was appalling, offering to Chuck us out without any hesitation, made no attempt to check in on my friend, didn’t care that we were there for the charity gig upstairs (in fact mocked this) and told us to ‘go and cry outside’. If you’re running a pub, People should be your forte, for this man and his staff, customers are clearly not respected. After this, they refused to serve me bottles (we were on bottles of Prosecco prior to this) and forced us to by glasses instead. All very petty, I think he thought we were drunk, we were tipsy but as I stood at the back of my two friends when this situation occurred, I know for a fact he was just an ignorant arrogant man. I wouldn’t WANT to come here again after this poor poor experience.

Exactly my type of pub. Quirkily decorated, friendly staff and a great choice of ales. I’m looking forward to having a longer visit there!

It was wonderful to see the Ruddy Duck re-opening, albeit temporarily in the library - which was decorated beautifully for the evening. The 5-course tasting menu we enjoyed was exceptional, my particular highlights being the beef cooked two ways which came with a scrummy potato gratin and our dessert, a superb creation of rhubarb and ginger, showing off the best of local produce. The kale even came from the walled gardens at Wortley Hall! Our servers David and Brogan were both warm, friendly and knowledgeable about both the menu and the venue and we'll be delighted to dine here again. A week later and I'm still thinking about the homemade rhubarb cocktail that David created for me!
