Shahi Raj in Test Valley

We have been coming here for years and there has always been a large group of us. The pre-orders are always spot on, food is gorgeous and the team at Shahi Raj are always very welcoming, attentive and friendly. The setting is humble and a relaxed atmosphere but we can’t fault it for a group get together & BYOB is a massive selling point too! Our group favourite is the Garlic Chilli Chicken - would recommend.

I Found it quite salty and Luke warm at best We had lamb shank and chicken dish (of which the chicken was hot) Service is slow unless you're a regular customer Drinks no ice offered so warm coke yuck 🤢🤢 Would I come here again no sorry it is not worth the money

I ordered a takeaway after working late on a Friday . Unfortunately the meal took an hour and 26 minutes to arrive against the hour quoted , not in itself a problem , but when I sat to eat it it was not even luke warm , as I was ravenous I began to eat it , I called the restaurant who said if I hadn’t touched it they would have sent another one with no specification on the time it would take , but instead said they would tell the chef off. I explained that that didn’t really help me and was told to put it in the microwave. Very disappointing service and a shame because it probably would have been a nice curry but cold was just something that filled a hole. Upset by my experience to be honest!

Best curry I’ve had in ages! Flavours were good and tasted properly put together. Like the thinner naan bread they make.. it’s flavourful and crisp like they make in India.. not the doughy thick chewy bread you get in many restaurants. Really good meal.

Great place and lovely people working there but £4.95 for a bottle of water is taking the p*ss. Increase the other prices instead. Great food though.

Food was very good. Don't sell alcohol so bring your own (Asda round the corner). Quiet during the week but takeaways were leaving regularly. Good value and very tasty.

Pretty average place, I was served a single Lamb chop as a starter!? Everywhere else you get 2-3, and the mains were fairly tasty but again nothing I’ve not had a thousand times before. Probably won’t be in a rush to return here to eat.

Worst biryani that I ever had in my life. We have ordered chicken and prawn biryani from this restaurant this evening. First biggest mistake I noticed is that they used some cheap quality normal rice instead of biryani rice. Secondly it was full of colour. Taste was okay so we ate it. But there was nothing authentic about this biryani. There was not even basic biriyani spices.Avoid this place if you want good quality authentic biryani.

First time we've tried this indian. Honestly the best Indian we've had! And we eat A LOT of Indian food. Very reasonably priced. Lots of flavour. Will use this Indian every time now! You'll never look back! Amazing!

Fancied a takeaway. First time I’ve ordered from this restaurant. I can t tell you how tasty it was! The chicken was so tender. Onion Bhaji was perfect. Nan. Perfect. Only one thing I have to have a pick at was the vegetable curry side dish. Yuk. No taste and watery. So I threw it away.

This was the meanest, dryest, worst quality Indian meal i’ve had for years. A portion of samosa was just two minute triangles for £3.95 plus delivery with no meat to speak of, onion bhajis also £3.95 just two in a portion and a portion of bhindi was a couple of spoonfuls for £3.75. Aprawn on puri was two something or others slightly larger than a pringle with a few old badly sauced dry shrimps. Tandoori mixed grill pictured below was £12.95 - for just two very dry sugar cube slices of lamb and two sugar cube slices of very dry cold chicken tikka and a finger size seekh kebab and a nasty bit of chicken that look like it had been cooked with everything else a month ago. Would anyone be happy paying £12.95 for that? Never again, as virtually everything was cold and dry and lifeless and nearly all was binned. A meal costing over £45 was binned. I wish TA allowed zero ratings.Not even a free poppadom! Their heart really isn’t in this and no one would find what they delivered to us acceptable.

Always very friendly staff and great food, fantastic choice if you are on a budget as you can bring your own alcohol, they will provide glasses and soft drinks too!

No confirmation e-mail. So had to phone them up to be sure they had our order and when it would be delivered. They were so late, I had already gone to bed when they delivered. And on top of that my partner reported they got the order wrong. Miserable performance.

I have been using this establishment for over 40 years and have always had good food. Tonight our takeaway was shocking. The paratha bread tasted as though it had been fried in cheap cooking oil, the naan bread was so stale that it was impossible to tear it. I had 3 vegetable curries, Okra, potatoe and cauliflower and potatoe and spinach. The okra and the spinach tasted as though they had been stored in plastic for a long time. The potato and cauliflower had no flavour. My husband had a king prawn balti that was fine, as was the pilau rice. It’s very disappointing and I wonder if the Shahi Raj are doing what a lot of restaurants do and outsourcing the cooking of takeaways because this was light years away from their usual standard.

Excllent meal for Four on Saturday night, good food, good service, good value. Bring you own booze means we will be coming back, as we want to spend money on the food not inflated booze prices. Quality nan breads

The place itself is very easy to find and well signposted. Once you enter you are warmly greeted by the friendly staff on site. Although the place is “bring your own beer”, the staff are happy to keep your drinks behind the bar and serve you your own beverages, making it a great place to entertain guests. The food itself was great quality and served quite rapidly. All of the 7 persons at the table were able to start their main course at the same time, which is always a bonus! Will return if I am ever in the area.

Turnt up late. First my husband had half a tin full of lamb curry with only 4 pieces of lamb rock hard chips No flavour my curry had no flavour pieces of chicken hadn't been cut up. So had massive pieces but there was only 4 big pieces in my curry the curry sauce was very lumpy not how u would have expected it to be. And nan bread hadn't been cooked propley and tasted doughy would not recommend to any one. Yukkkk what a waste of money.. Mm

Very insightful cold restaurant, the service was great but the food was average, the drinks were dreadful (flat) it’s smelt of damp (no heating) was just an awful experience. I think they need to consider a takeaway service only or renovate the restaurant. You will see when you visit!

we have recently moved back to Andover and decided to give Shah Raj a go. Disappointed to say the least. 40mins to get poppadoms, then 45 mind to get starter which for mine was bland. waited a further 30mims and main still didn't arrive. my wife way getting tired and quite fed up so I said just go home and I will ask for take out for main. and a further10 min. And got home opened up and have just four pieces of chicken and a bunch of onions and sauce. yes we were discounted 10%, And his excuse staff refused to travel down from London due to covid. Really! never again awful dining experience first night out.

Our experience was brilliant, it was really busy but the waiter worked hard, was friendly and we all really enjoyed our food. The garlic naan was the best we’ve had. No frills restaurant with excellent food and friendly staff.

Thought we'd take advantage of the 50% off offer by visiting one of our local eateries, but unfortunately it was not the evening we were expecting. Despite ordering food in advance, it took forever to get any! Starters didn't arrive together. Then it took over an hour to remove our plates. We didn't get our main until 8.45 (table booked for 7). We daren't ask for a second drink as it had taken an eternity to get the first. . We had to ask for napkins as there were none on the tables. All the food was incredibly greasy. and to be honest fairly inedible. Such a disappointment, things would have to change greatly for us to consider visiting these premises again.

We thought it would be nice to help out some restaurants by having a early week meal for the family,seems this was a mistake the restaurant was very empty when we arrived and soon filled up seems like they had booked everyone in at the same time It took a wile for the waiter to ask if we wanted popadoms and drinks ,we ordered popadoms and before we could give our drinks order the waiter went I had to grasp his attention to order our drinks also had to reorder our popadoms The popadoms came and the drinks . We ate these but they didn’t take our food order until we had long ago finished the popadoms We waited waited for mains now on a second lot of soft drinks still no food we had now been their for one and three quarter hours and we was now past hunger eventually the waiter finally noticed out discomfort and said sorry your food is coming We it did about 9:10 we arrived at 7:00 Now to the food well I would love to say it was good and worth the wait ,sadly it was not good ,my keema nann was over cooked crispy horrible my curry bland ,the rice greasy My wife ordered chicken tikka masala,they got that wrong and sent chicken tikka we complained And they said they would sort So we had some food on the table but no forks to eat with the food was getting cold finally my wife got her chicken tikka masala,it was the worst I have ever seen it was full of red food colouring and tasted awful it was more like the chicken korma my some had ordered with red food colour Her plain nann was now cold and tough as an old boot We really didn’t eat out food paid and left as quick as possible they knew they had let us and others down the couple next to us waited even longer and others who arrived after us had long gone never again would I visit this restaurant

Looked at the reviews on this restaurant and decided to order a takeaway last night. Was really disappointed with our chicken tikka masala and chicken korma. The sauces were really bland, and tasted watery. There was water left in the bowl after we'd finished eating. To be honest the only reason I can think for this is that they were frozen, and not cooked fresh to order. Will not be using them again.

Main part of this restaurant is the warm welcoming, knowledgeable staff. The food is also delicious! Please don’t judge the restaurant on the tired decor. It doesn’t reflect the warmth you feel as you enter and dine there. Felt very relaxed and well cared for.

90 mins after we're ordered, we ate. Food was mediocre. One family member found a sliver of metal in her food (we were not charged for the food) but had she eaten it she would've ended up in A&E. Decor is tired, they seemed to focus on their takeaway customers rather than sit down customers. The stairs are very steep so you've had it if you have a chair. Overall 1 out of 5. Won't be returning.

Plenty of good curry restaurants in Andover but in my opinion the best. Added bonus of taking your own drinks which saves money on the bill. Always delicious.

Friendly staff and great food, will be back for more. Took our own drink, which made it a cheap night and the Vindaloo is recommended.

Had a Tandoori Mixed Grill with Nan bread, absolutely sublime traditional Indian food.

Of my many years on this Planet, it is fair to say I have put away quite a few Curry's from around the Globe. My sister-in-law lives in Andover, Hampshire, and when we visit we always get a takeaway from here. I don't know what they do to create such sublime tasting food, but the last time, when I ordered for 9 people, everyone and I do mean everyone, said it was the best takeaway they had ever had. Coconut rice, samosas, kormas, pasandas, nan and sag aloo are my personal favorites. As a result, my sister-in-law sees a lot more (than she would probably like) of us

I love this little restaurant. So warm and friendly and the food is delicious They don’t have an alcohol licence so you can take your own and buy mixers Most restaurants bump up the price of alcohol which is where the high bill usually comes from. The menu is varied and great value for money.

i came here with my boyfriend for our 1 year anniversary and the food was just amazing. the staff were friendly and helpful. Its bring your own alcohol but we don't drink so we jus had soft drinks. I would strongly recommend this to anybody who wants good food and good atmosphere.

When reviewing any restaurant, food must always be the first consideration. Food here is generally of a good standard but not served in generous portions. Service can be very slow and the restaurant can be very cold during winter months! Improvement to portions and heating...
