Eaten here many times, service is impeccable friendly and professional. There is always reasonable time between courses .The food is authentic fresh,and flavours are distinguishable between dishes. Though toilets require some TLC this shouldn’t put you off. If you are looking for an Authentic Indian meal that is unrushed I would recommend.

I cannot thank the staff at the restaurant enough. When one of my colleagues collapsed a couple of times(not alcohol), they were great in keeping the restaurant open into the small hours whilst we waited for the ambulance. In the end, due to delays with the ambulance, we sorted out alternative transport and got him to A&E, where subsequent tests showed it was an issue with blood pressure. He is now fine. Anyway, a big shout of thanks to all of the staff.

It is not authentic Indian food.

A group of 10 of us visited The Shahenshah after a round of golf. The whole atmosphere, staff and food were terrific. I cannot recommend a visit highly enough.

Visited restaurant last night - first appearance was that it was in need of new carpets and ceiling redecorating which made it look grubby. However the food and service was exceptional- would definitely recommend.

The food is delicious, it’s important to note, but the overall dining experience is let down by other factors when eating at the Shahenshah. The restaurant is one of Hertford’s oldest and this shows when you’re seated inside. My friend and I were placed towards the back of the restaurant close to some storage of cardboard boxes and the decor is bleak. I was irked by the staff asking for a tip. While I was intending to add a tip to my payment anyway, I was mentally calculating how much to add and the waiter challenged me for not adding service charge, which I considered rude.

Haven’t been for a while, but I’ve been coming to this restaurant since it opened in 1987 (I think…?) The food was delicious and the service very good. My only gripe — the gents’ toilets leave a lot to be desired. Overflowing sinks, wet floor and ‘that’ smell. A better hand cleaning station wouldn’t go amiss either.

There are better places to eat and the staff aren't particularly helpful. They seemed very put out that were were there but added a service charge on without asking. Sticky carpet and dirty toilets too.

Mediocre food, with some helpful staff and some not. Felt like they were living in the past and needed to have a bit of a rethink on quality of food and on customer service, and not to be so pushy.

Staff are welcoming and engaging, the food is fresh, tasty and good portion sizes, nice atmosphere, comfy seats. Great evening 👍🏻

Mixed reviews reviews for this restaurant. Was quite a busy night so the service wasn’t great. Ordered popadoms which were a bit soft, not the best but the pickles were generous. Went to the toilet and straight away I could smell mould, looked around and I can honestly say it put me off the restaurant straight away. I always believe if you have clean toilets so will the kitchen but this was not the case. They really do need to deep clean the Loos. Drops coming from the ceiling so the floor is wet which is prob causing the damp issue. Overall the main food was nice but I kept thinking is the kitchen dirty. My first time here so not sure I’ll go back. Sorry guys. It doesn’t take much to keep toilets clean.

Don’t order online. Turned up 2 hours 20 mins later, despite ringing to chase after an hour. Apparently they don’t check their system ….don’t have an online service on your website then!

This is an old favourite, from when I lived in Hertford. Maybe a little bit worn for than in the past. Food was lovely, and service efficient. The only downside was, on a Saturday night, it was VERY noisy, and some of our fellow diners were behaving disgracefully, which sadly seems to be the norm in Saturday night Hertford :-(

Ordered a long time in advance and selected a timeslot. Chased after the slot was missed by over half an hour. Eventually arrived an hour late, which disrupted the evening. Apparently only one driver working on the night, but this was not communicated beforehand to explain that the order was likely to be late etc. Food was very good, but was eating far too late in the evening.

First time here and it was amazing. One of the best in Hertford. We were a party of 12 and they were very attentive, service was excellent. Our server was so friendly and funny, he repeated the orders since we ordered a lot of food. The food was so good, fresh and the right amount of spices. No one in our party complained about the food, everyone loved it. The naan bread was lovely. Everything was excellent. The servers went above and beyond for us even though it was busy. It is expensive but well worth it. Would definitely 100% come back.

We've been coming here for more than 20 years and the food is always excellent, the staff are so friendly and welcoming and its great value. This is not your average Indian restaurant as it has more choice, the food and wine are excellent quality and Mr Miah is such a great host. They are also so accommodating and provided fabulous food at home for my 60th birthday party which was just fabulous.

Best curry restaurant in and around London. Make sure to order the lamb Bhuna and prawn delight. Beats the stale popadoms and dry meat you get in most central London curry houses…..we’ll worth the visit.

Fantastic curry house. I have been coming here for many years and am always impressed with the friendly welcome and great food. The green murg curry comes highly recommended if you like olives.

Actually impressed this time around. At 9pm they catered for our group of 11 in spite of us not booking. Food arrived within 20mins of ordering. Prices v reasonable. Nice service and atmos.

Nice meal, but the restaurant is far too noisy for an enjoyable catch up with a friend. But my biggest bug bear was with an an astronomical £6.50 for a coke. That sir, is an absolute first for me and is a complete rip off. Pubs, bars and restaurants need to be more mindful of the non drinker and not fleece them is they are the designated driver. For this reason alone, I'll be giving this place a wide berth in the future!

Stale /soggy poppadoms, rubbery chicken, watery curry sauce with no flavour and to top it off everything we recieved was cold. Very disappointed as this used to be my favourite restaurant. I won't be ordering from here again.

Was really looking forward to a curry from Shahenshah as have not had one from here in several years. Unfortunately it will be another few years before I order again. Although the food quality was good, it needed to be heated up as the food was 1/2 hour late. Took 1:40 in total from ordering to delivery (after I chased the delivery).

A late evening dinner, we were satisfied in every way, excellent environment, very kind and friendly staff. Advise. 4 of us ate, good price.

Starters good but when my sashlick arrived it as tough as mutton, perhaps it was mutton! Everything else was ok, I think it was not as good as the last time I was there, a while ago now.

We ordered and had confirmation at 610 for meal at 8pm finally delivered after phone call by 840. As far as I was aware the set menu option one (minimum two people) for £21-95 seemed the rightway to go as it appeared to be offering mixed starter a bread and rice to share and two mains. I rang because I said one of the mains was missing and got told you have to order two, I said I did they said no it's £2195 each but even if that was my mistake the promised naan wasn't included. Staff on phone totally uncaring even when I explained we had some time ago (pre covid) eaten in restaurant and left disappointed and this was a second chance for them. AVOID

First off, no issues with the service at all. The staff were attentive and kind. They even packed up the leftover food and gave us some extra rice so we had enough. And gave us a recommendation for a vegetarian restaurant in Angel. All of the f6ood was good, some of the food was great. I feel that they really shine with their off the beaten track menu items the Chicken Phatila and the Village Style Begun were both delicious, well spiced and had a chili heat that added to the dish without dominating. The Lamb Pasanda was nice, but on the blander end of Pasanda's. I would definitely recommend as a place to go in Hertford and would come back. But I'd push you towards their specials.

Got one of the dishes wrong, ended up with (what i think was) a Lamb Balti instead of a Duck Masala. whatever it was, it was very nice, just not what was ordered…

First time I had been here, and when I walked in I was a little unsure as it was empty (we went at 7pm) and the decor was tired. That said, as soon as the food arrived, it was incredible - you could taste the freshness of the ingredients. We ordered a selection and everything tasted varied and had a depth of flavour that you don’t often get in curry houses. Genuinely so impressed with the food. Excellent! Would come again.

I ordered sag aloo as the side and received Bombay aloo. It was still nice but would have preferred sag aloo.

I eat here near enough every week or at least twice a month for the last 15 years, and i can personally say that this is by far the best Indian restaurant in the entire area! (KING PRAWN DELIGHT) 🤤 I’ve NEVER heard a bad word about the food, it’s TOP CLASS if you know your food. People that write some of the reviews here are just talking bs! You won’t find a better Indian in Hertfordshire period.

First time at Shahenshah and will definitely go back. Great location in Hertford and usually looks like tables available at short notice. Had the mixed starter for two, lamb passanda and lamb jalfrezi with garlic naans plus rice - all very tasty and generous portions, with good amount of meat! Couldn't finish it between two of us so got to enjoy the doggy bag the day after too!

The staff were very rude to us…the food was ok, but not enough to compensate for the staff who were very rude to my husband, and then to both of us as we left the restaurant. A very odd experience.

The food was good - not amazing - but ok. But the stars are for the service. It took forever to get food to our table. Despite being booked in for 5:30, we did not get our food until at least 50 minutes after we ordered. And I believe that was only because we asked where the heck it was. We had a later appointment to get to, so in the end some of us had to leave to get there so we didn't lose our table. It wasn't busy. It was just bad service. Would I return? Nope, sorry I wouldn't.

Avoid - Chicken served was off & suffered diorea the next morning. Others at the table complained of bland & stringy dishes.Informed manager that chicken was off & was offered a different dish Tol

This is by far the best take away in Hertford. They serve delicious food from tandoori range, utterly mouthwatering. Would recommend to anyone.

very disappointed with the takeaway from Shahenshah this evening. I was hungry a looking for a really satisfying quality curry. Food is not cheap here so you expect quality but instead was bland, no spice or tang, quite greasy and well below average. Cuts of chicken and lamb were ok but the sauce let the meals down. Chicken biriani should contain a wonderful fragrance and taste from multiple spices and the Rogan should have a little bit of a chilli hit. Sadly very lacking in flavour.

Felt like the safest restaurant I'd been in for a long time. There's lots of space, lots of hand gel and the staff / chef had face masks.

Visited the Shahenshah for the first time last week and was really impressed by the quality and taste of food on offer. Had a Lamb Korma, pilau rice and nan and all were absolutely delicious and the best curry I've eaten since I last visited the curry mile in Rusholme.Only slight disappointment was the service which was lacking, my friend had to ask for a jug of water twice only to get a small glass of water after 15 minutes of waiting. Also other tables that came in after us got served before us which was a tad unusual.That said if you like your food this is the place for you. It gets 4 out of 5 for me on the food alone and if the service was a tad better would have got a solid 5.

This used to be our favourite restaurant but we can no longer overlook this restaurants blatant disregard for basic food hygiene and the health and well-being of the general public. It’s not acceptable to be sick after eating at a restaurant. There is no excuse for poor hygiene, sort yourselves out!!

Good food, nice selection, fair price and they always try their best to squeeze you in if you don't book. However, my ultimate Indian is always the Taste of Raj in Stanstead Abbotts

We booked this Indian for our New Years Eve get together with friends. It was very busy. I ordered king Prawn Dopiaza....which was the worst one I’d ever tasted! The prawns were virtually non existent ....evidently they get a couple of prawns and chop them into tiny pieces....in fact 12-16 pieces we were told. I did complain and they brought me two more king prawns to add to my sauce! The onions were undercooked and tough to eat and the rest of the vegetables weren’t very hot either. Our friends were also unimpressed with their meals. We sat for almost an hour before they cleared our table. Very unusual for an Indian restaurant. We will not return and feel totally robbed.
