Gone downhill since being sold a few years ago.

I think it's about time you took notice of some of the reviews regarding food being uncovered where customers queue up for there drinks etc, it's very unhygienic.Also I think it's time you got some new coffee machines, yours are so slow.

Disgusting never will go again never will recommend it to anyone and very rude lady who serves on the till very disgusting and disappointing and not worth the money spent very sad to go to a place with rude woman serving on till disgusting

We have been customers of this restaurant for many years, our ‘go to’ restaurant when shopping in Eastbourne. We were very shocked at the decline in standards we experienced today. I asked a male staff member a very simple question about the menu and his reply was abrupt! My overpriced lunch was delivered before my husband’s. I was half way through my slice of toast with a thin layer of ham, cheese, a small portion of lettuce, quarter tomato and a few crisps (which cost me £7.50!) when my husband’s lunch was served. Several of the lights were off, creating a gloomy, depressing atmosphere. I am genuinely sad to say that we will not return.

Not bad but every time we visit we ask for skimmed milk or oat milk and every time we are disappointed. Not everyone can have full fat milk or semi skinned milk. Try thinking of everyone not just the select few.

Good variety of food to choose from. Nice staff. Clean and tidy environment.

Cheese scones to die for. Big enough to share but you'll not want to.

Open atmosphere in the middle of shoping centre next to mobilebitz.

Absolutely disgusting prices keep going up every few months

Popped in for light bite and drink,I asked lady that was cleaning tables what she was using to clean with,all I got was I don't speak English,I have sensitive skin and some cleaning stuff effects my breathing,shades please employ people who speak English and get them to learn about the cleaning products they are using.wont be going again

the cottage pie was absolutely horrid

The food is lovely. Not happy with how the staff in the cafe part prepare the food. For hygiene reasons the staff preparing food should be wearing gloves. This is very concerning. There's two staff members preparing salads, sandwiches and other food, both are using their hands with no gloves

I stopped here again today as was shopping in Eastbourne had a very nice cup of green tea as always the young girls don’t let you down with a warm welcome from them both shame about the mature staff members not the same they just don’t look happy I write as I see things on the day this site is in a prime location right in the middle of a busy shopping centre the other staff members should take a leaf out of the younger members of the crew not something you read a lot about normally it’s the other way round so girls you both are fantastic great customer service experience as always you both are wasted there thank you to you both keep up the great work you do love mr cheeky in Kent glen

I stopped here this afternoon 27/4/24 as was shopping down here so I had to stop for a cup of tea and a nice warm wellcome the young girls don’t let you down with a nice smile both the young girl polite and most helpful which is nice to see I feel they both do a great job not all customers are as nice as me so girls thank you to you both 100/100 stars to you both love mr cheeky in Kent Glen

poor service i can not eat a big meal so asked for a childs portion got a horrible look of the manager not good and i got given a big portion and my husband said childs he got charged for adult not good. Most of the staff have left which i dont blame them as the new owners are horrible they watch the staff like hawkes hate that. Will never eat in there again. We go elsewhere now and we have told friends and family not to eat in there again as well and why.

Lovely cup of coffee. The sausage rolls and desserts are nice, but they are out in the open right next to the queue. It puts you off, as after the pandemic, people are more concerned about germs, and you've got everyone filing past the open food. It would be good if the food was covered.

Just been here Saturday 9 March and for the second time experienced the rudest, most appalling customer service from the male member of staff taking orders for food. Put in order for food, then whilst we were at the till he shouted at us trying to give us chips. We hadn’t ordered any chips and it wasn’t on the receipt. I nicely said we hadn’t ordered any chips, was then given nasty look and massive eye rolls between him and the young girl on the till. Although I think she was just agreeing with him, as didn’t want to get on his bad side. I would’ve complained at the time and was thinking of complaining to a member of staff as they walked past, but was with my elderly grandmother and didn’t want to upset her. Tried going back later on, but it was too busy and I couldn’t see the Manager. Tried calling, but the phone number given on website does not work and no email address either.

I ordered a coffee (for a friend), scone and mug of hot water. I was abruptly told that i would be charged for the mug of hot water. I was OK with this as assumed it would be a small amount as I've been charged 50p to £1 on the odd occasion before. However I was then told it would be the same price as a cup of tea which was £2.20. I showed my surprise and was told people have been bringing their own tea bags. I explained I don't drink tea or coffee and was asked if I wanted a tea bag to go in it. I would happily pay if I hadn't ordered anything else but to be charged £2.20 for a cup of hot water is a complete rip off, and I felt I was accused of lying when offered a tea bag. I certainly will not be going back.

Went here for the fish and chips as in the past has always been good, but unfortunately today the fish and chips were reheated in the microwave (which I know they do with other hot food) but it came out soggy and unappealing and I had to leave the batter, the peas were cold and like bullets. Not the standard of past trips!

Excellent meals, drinks, staff, service and location . Spacious.

I regularly go to Shades for lunch. I have diabetes so cannot comment on cakes and deserts but look very nice. I have a dinner usually, love the steak pies. Roasts and baked potato lunches with side salad. The cheese is nice cheese.

Had a lovely lunch on a busy weekday. The staff were great, they were so so busy running around to ensure everyone was looked after. Food was served quickly and was delicious, will definitely return!

The problems with this place are that it's extremely noisy, because of the glass roof it's hot in Summer and cold in Winter and the space is bare and unwelcoming.

Visited on a Sunday when the main restaurant was closed and service provided from a small booth in the shopping centre. Service was slow and the food just okay.

I really really want to leave a positive review. I really do. But I can't. Food menu is OK, basic sort of fare, but it's really not prepared or served properly. We saw the sandwiches being made by a guy who wasn't wearing gloves and wiped some butter from his hands onto his t-shirt. The food when it arrived had about 4 crisps, a very sad looking quarter of a tomato and a couple of leaves with the sandwich. Very disappointing.

Lovely piece of cheesecake. Coffee great. Less noisy than lots of places which is great for me.

Good if you fancy a 'nibble' ;)

Good basic food without the fuss.

Came for lunch with my family and the food was very average. The menu is abit boring.. nothing new. The staff serving the food where lovely and polite, but the elderly women who works on the drinks and till area was so rude! Very snappy and abrupt. All I asked for was some sauce and I got the rudest look, no answer from her and she just walked away. I did eventually get the sauce but her customer service was terrible. The portion sizes have definitely got smaller too!

I have been coming to shades since my daughter was a toddler, she is 26 now. We both had lunch here yesterday and it was delicious! So fresh and nicely presented . The perfect place to eat whilst shopping. Will be back very soon!

This place is very dated, the menu is very boring and doesn’t cater for any dietary requirements, there was barely a vegetarian option so trying to find something vegan friendly was virtually impossible! Staff are incredibly rude and unhelpful - the manager especially so! Very expensive for very poor quality food that’s just sat there all day on a hot plate. Tables are only up to 4 people too, we came in a group of 5 and so had to sit apart. Won’t be going back and I definitely don’t recommend this place

Tiene muchos asientos en la planta baja en la Plazza, justo adentro, además de asientos en el piso de arriba para los que necesitaría moverse ya que no hay ascensor. Buen café . . . pero el personal debe conocer y reconocer la diferencia entre clientes masculinos y femeninos. . . Very popular place for me. Great variety of meals in the restaurant and also a coffee shop and cakes in the atrium seating area. Great place to relax and destress after shopping. Fair prices.

Normalmente vamos aquí para almorzar o tomar un café cuando visitamos a la familia.Su típico restaurante tipo autoservicio. Siempre está muy ocupado.La comida es siempre buena.Lo malo es que quizás tengas que equilibrar tu bandeja para subir, si el café está lleno.Y no parece haber un baño en el lugar.

This restaurant in the centre of the Arndale Shopping Centre has a good quantity of seating available next to Boots, unlike other restaurants in the area. It is a self service restaurant with a good range of choices. My wife had the cod,chips and peas and I had a jacket potato with prawns, together with hot chocolate. Cost was just under £16. The cod/peas were excellent, but the chips were somewhat disappointing. The staff were lovely...helpful and friendly.

Visited shades today with my elderly mother, seated my mother and I went to order. Being I've eaten here many times I knew the menu. When I got to till I realised I wasn't going to be able to manage the tray as I have splints on both wrist. I asked the girl on the till for help and immediately she said of course I'll get someone to assist you. It was extremely busy and she couldn't get the attention of anyone ,as there was an empty table near till she asked if I would consider moving tables. I said I would so she popped my food on the table , whilst apologising for not being more helpful. This young ladies is a credit go your establishment. Mothers jacket potato was huge how she ate it all I don't know. My bowl of salad was lovely. This is the 2nd time staff have helped me. Keep up the good work

Amazing value, good consistency meals, good classic menu.Love the roast dinners, steak kidney pie home made. Well done shades, have been visiting shades for the last 10 years, quality has been same good as ever. My wife loves the macaroni cheese. Lots of choice. Honest Kelv

Eastbourne has changed so much over the past 30 years.The town has seen so many changes with the loss of C&A, Littlewoods, BHS etc let alone restaurants.There are not many places in the Arndale centre that serve English food except Shades which is understandably popular and busy during lunch times.I love my traditionally home cooked old fashioned English food hence my regular visits to Shades.As well as food, the tea is strong which compliments the food perfectly.The dishes I recommend are roast lamb which is the best because it tastes like school dinners and the Marie rose prawns with baked potato.The only drawback is the service, I wish they could be a bit more friendlier, not all of the staff but some.

Nada notable sobre este lugar. Si te sientas en el área principal, tienes la molestia y el bullicio del centro comercial y si sale el sol, hace mucho calor bajo el techo de vidrio. La comida y las bebidas son promedio y solo usarán este lugar si otras cafeterías y restaurantes más íntimos están llenos. El personal también está bastante ansioso por aclarar tus cosas, por lo que no te demoras mucho.

I drove 2.5 hours to visit friends who live locally. One has a 6 month old baby and the other a 13 month old and a 2 month old. We sat down, I had looked at the menu options while the other 2 began feeding the babies. There was no menu, so I photographed the limited board for us and had been told we could relocate inside for more options. I sat back at the table and started helping with feeding the youngest. A worker then started mumbling to herself about having to get her trolley through. The manner in which she did this was quite rude. A chair was then moved so she could get by. While we continued feeding the babies and deciding whether to have something small or relocate inside, we then had another member of staff come over and ask if we “actually intend to buy something”, again in a rude manner. We said we had intended to, but had to feed the babies first. A few minutes later, the same member of staff came over and told us that if we do not intend to buy something, we should leave. We exclaimed that we found her and her colleague to be rude and now we do intend to leave without purchasing anything, despite having the intention to eat lunch there. The woman then snapped at us that we should have bought a drink first, rather than feed the babies. She then stood there while we gathered everything and left. I’ve never known someone be so rude to a customer.

Met my son in Eastbourne so stopped for tea & scones before hitting the shops. We found the staff very friendly & helpful, will Definitely go there again

Very nice cafe'restaurant in the heart of The Beacon shopping centre. It is internal but with high level glazing feels very open. Excellent range of food, especially in the reastauant. The atrium sitting area is more for snack,coffee, etc. Good location to meet friends or have a drink whilst the other half roams around.

Mi esposo y yo esperamos ansiosos nuestros viajes a Eastbourne y una visita a Shades para disfrutar de su maravilloso pastel de carne y riñones. Sin embargo, no hemos visitado durante algunas semanas cuando visitamos en nuestra última visita y nuevamente hoy nos sentimos muy decepcionados, ya que por segunda vez la calidad había disminuido y el tamaño de las porciones se había reducido. Creo que deben haber tenido un cambio en el chef, ya que los pasteles eran mediocres (no el sabor a mantequilla anterior) y el bistec estaba duro y molido. No estoy seguro si volveremos

Popped in for lunch with my friend. We enjoyed a cheese and onion toastie and brie panini. Good price, speedy service and friendly staff. Definitely recommend

A break frm shopping for lunch, we found the food good quality and reasonably priced. We were served quickly and efficiently and hot food was ready promptly even though they were very busy. Will go again next time we are shopping.

Íbamos de compras y pensábamos tomar un té. Eran las 3. 30. La mitad del frente de la tienda se cerró con un aviso de que estaban cerrados. Fuimos en el otro lado y el personal no estaba contento. Tomamos un té y mi esposa tenía un café muy pobre. Es una pena tener una cafetería tan pobre en el centro del centro. Definitivamente no es un café "destino"

Hace más de 20 años que nos hemos ido a la sombra, nunca he tenido ninguna queja sobre la comida hasta ahora, para nosotros es el café, decir que es desagradable, no estaría mal, es una pena, ya que hay tantas opciones de botones de presión. pero lamentablemente no el que están usando, mi café estaba amargo. Solo tomo 1 azúcar, pero terminé con 6.

Good all round restaurant offering simple food. Probably the best toast in the town, although the coffee could be improved.

Not sure why the person below was treated to such good service, we certainly weren’t. Our drinks order was mixed up, but instead of an apology, we were treated like dirt and had numerous eye rolls from the manageress and the waitress serving. Definitely a mix of staff here, some are very friendly, but we’ve noticed the ones who’ve been there longer, definitely are not. It’s a shame, as the food and tea, coffees etc are all very nice.

We visited Shades today for a quick snack, unfortunately there was a problem with our order, the manageress sorted things out, offered us complimentary drinks whilst we waited for our food and then refunded our whole bill.

I stopped here today for a drink and a cake I asked the young lady for a hot choc with out milk as I don’t drink it and was told it has to come with it why they coundnt just put the powder in a cup then just add water simple easy job made hard the young girl that served me didn’t understand it here self they have done it before so why was there a problem this time leave the Young girls to run it it’s when the mature one take over that’s when the problems happen will I go back I don’t think so

My mother ate here regularly and introduced me to the place. This is still a quick lunch place of choice for me. The food is hot, quick and inexpensive but not cordon bleu. It is invariable frequented by the older generation, but don't let that put you off.

El personal siempre está muy ansioso por limpiar las mesas y no un lugar para quedarse, ya que se siente como para tener que ir tan pronto como haya terminado su comida o bebida. Visité un sábado y me atrajo la enorme cola. Tuve la cena de cordero asado y era una carne magra encantadora con patatas asadas crujientes y verduras bien cocidas. Fue muy buena relación calidad-precio.

¡Esta debe ser la primera vez que he visitado un restaurante y no tienen NINGUNA silla alta! ! ! ! ¿Deben tener 50 - 60 fundas y no sillas altas? ¿Qué diablos? ? ? Terminamos teniendo que ir a otro restaurante familiar en la ciudad. Vamos, Shades lo resuelve, ¿en qué década estás? Los niños deben ser bienvenidos, no excluidos.

This restaurant situated in Eastbournes shopping center is a great value for money lunch venue. Having eaten there many times i find the choice of good home cooking to be of excellent quality.

Todo iba bien hasta que nos dimos cuenta de que necesitábamos ketchup, pregunté en el mostrador y un miembro del personal me indicó dónde estaba. Escogí 3 bolsitas pequeñas pensando que eran gratis ya que no hay precio en la canasta. Cuando comencé a alejarme, señora, hasta que dijeron que eran 10 p cada una. La comida, etc., era maravillosa, pero nunca antes me habían cobrado ketchup en un café, raro.

Fuimos a las sombras para el almuerzo después de una visita a un área de juegos suaves. Mi otra mitad y yo tenía bistec y champiñones. Pie vino con masas de verduras muy bien cocidas y una montaña de patatas asadas. Mi hija tenía una generosa porción de queso macarrones con un montón de patatas fritas. Dos nietos tenían pescado y patatas fritas. Le expliqué a mi hijo de 2 años que no comería ni siquiera las porciones de los niños a las que me dieron un pequeño cuenco con un poco de tarta casera con algunas verduras. Qué amable que se le ofrezca una comida realmente pequeña. Lamentablemente, mi nieta se había quedado dormida cuando llegué a la mesa, pero la metí en un recipiente de plástico y me la llevé a casa. El servicio era realmente bueno, aunque estaba muy ocupado y el personal era alegre. No dudaría en recomendarlo a la gente.

Acabo de tomar un par de cappuccinos durante un día en Eastbourne. He comido aquí antes y generalmente bien, pero creo que la máquina de café necesita un servicio. Buen trabajo, teníamos chocolate en la parte superior, ya que de lo contrario tenía poco sabor y solo parecía y sabía a leche morena y tibia. Definitivamente no hay patada de café aquí. Tuvimos una fabulosa cena de cordero asado con todos los adornos, mi hija que normalmente no come mientras estábamos fuera tenía el bacalao y patatas fritas terminado todo con un poco de ayuda de mi nieto. La comida era tan buena que llamamos a mi yerno para que se nos una. El personal era amable y servicial, y la comida era deliciosa, recomendaría esto a todos ustedes ???

I stopped for a cup of tea with my friend (we are both retired ladies) and we literally wanted one cup of tea each. I requested an extra cup and saucer (as the teapot contained enough tea for two cups) but was refused. The lady serving said "its more than my job's worth to give out an extra cup". What absolute rubbish. How mean of them. Shades will not be getting our custom again. Meanness does not pay in the long run.

I’ve lived in Eastbourne for 43 years but have never been to Shades restaurant. My daughter asked to try it for lunch today and it exceeded my expectations. Lasagne was delicious, veg nicely cooked, choc cheesecake was lovely and hot choc was excellent, nice and hot. The serving staff were friendly and well organised. I felt a little rushed by the lady on the till but never mind that, it was a pleasant lunch. Salad looked nice, I think I’ll get a salad bowl and sausage roll next time :)

This restaurant has been open in the Arndale center for years. Service and food remains very good. I just wish they would open earlier, 9am is just too late these days.

We haven't eaten at Shades for a number of years and it really has changed very little since then.

Menu good choice of meals at bargain prices. The fish and chips is hard to beat at quality and value for money. Excellent salad menu for those on a healthier regime.

A favourite haunt of over 25 years for our family whenever we visit Eastbourne for shopping. Ideally situated in the middle of the Arndale shopping centre it offers a good range of food from light snacks to full meals. The area is spotlessly clean and tables are cleared away and cleaned very quickly. Reasonably priced too which was important when we were feeding three hungry children. Staff are always very friendly and helpful. An ideal place for 'people watching' as you consume lunch or drinks. I highly recommend the fish and chips

had a coffee and cake was a little disappointed that a this big did not do barista coffee,but it is a pleasant café with friendly staff and the cakes are delicious!

Regular visit here for good quality food at a very reasonable price. A good choice of hot meals and a excellent salad bar. Freshly made sandwiches available too.

Aparecimos para un aperitivo y una bebida. El té y el café estaban bien pero el pastel era muy mala, era una masa produjo uno y sabía como uno. Es una pena realmente. Aún así, volvería a ir por una bebida pero nada para comer.

Tonos. . . Un refugio muy conocido popular almuerzo en el centro comercial Arndale.

Siempre aquí para almuerzos en pop básico y comidas rápidas. Sus sándwiches tostados son muy sabrosos y muy generoso. Siempre tengo de atún y tomate y viene con unas cuantas patatillas y hojas de lechuga. Muy buena relación calidad-precio.

El restaurante principal estaba cerrado, así que cenamos en el aire en la parte centro Arndale. El personal es excelente y nada es demasiado problema. El menú es variado y para todos los requisitos que pueda tener. La comida se sirve siempre en tiempo y forma, caliente y bien presentada. Las bebidas calientes son muy buenas, y una vez más para satisfacer todas las necesidades. Aunque estás sentado en la parte abierta del centro sigue siendo un ambiente agradable.

Stopped at Shades for lunch with my father as there is a complete lack of dining facilities in the Arndale Centre (until the extension arrives!) Shades always seems very busy and popular so we both ordered the macaroni cheese, mine with salad and my father's with vegetables. The food was nice.. but it felt expensive at almost £8 per meal. The portion wasn't particularly large and the salad garnish was minimal, to say the least, a little cress, two cherry tomatoes and a tiny amount of ice burg lettuce. Salad dressings all extra which I feel is stingy. The coffee was nice, the service was lovely and the atrium seating area was very bright and cheerful. I would return again because the quality of the food was nice and it was convenient.

5 out of 5, excellent customer service. A variety of different hot and cold meals to choose from. Definitely would come back!

Shades has an outer seating area, where coffees and teas with usually a small snack can be enjoyed. In inner restaurant area is cosy and comfortable, here more substantial meals are on offer such as hearty pies with veg, roast chicken, and fish and chips, as well as lighter bites like salads and jackets. All very competitively priced, you can have a break, without breaking the bank! The staff are quick, efficient and friendly. Perfectly located in the center of the Arndale Centre, Shades is great!

Went here for lunch around 1pm on a Tuesday and was surprised to find it extremely busy.My husband decided to have the liver and bacon but it had been sitting in the hot plate area and it the liver was quite tough and dried out, awful to eat.I had the ham, egg and chips which was cooked to order and I think that is the secret here, only eat what is freshly made as that is better. Mine was ok but nothing special but at least it was hot and not dried out!We had a diet coke each but it was the type that comes out of a machine and it really didn't taste very nice.Our meal came to £19 but what annoyed me most was that as we stood at the till paying, I noticed some sauce sachets were at the till, so I took 2 and immediately the cashier increased what we had to pay to £19.10! For the prices being charged, which are not cheap, I think sauces should be included.We managed to find one table free and it wasn't clean - there was food and a leftover serviette with gravy on it, still left on the table. The woman cleaning tables eventually took our plates away but didn't clean the table - so it looks like this is a big problem.There are no toilets either at this place, when I asked where they were, we were told to use the ones inside the Arndale - that's quite a long walk from where this place is situated. We will not be returning here.

We used this venue a few times during our stay in Eastbourne they do serve meals which looked nice, but we just had snacks, a toasted teacake etc. Service was good though not always with a smile.

We are regulars here for coffee and toast in the morning or sandwiches midday. Friendly service and keen prices. I just wish they would open a little earlier.

Good positioning for a cafe/snack place. Had coffee or tea here many times. The inside area is very 70's and desperately needs updating. It is a little overpriced in some areas. The cheese scone I had was very dry and I was not able to eat most of it. I find complaining difficult so decided not to mention it. The outside staff always friendly and I have noticed them helping elderly or disabled to get to seats with food and drinks.

I had a Tuna & mayo sandwich made to order as had run out of pre packed sandwiches & my dad had 2 scones - 1 cheese & 1 fruit. Both very nice & only had to wait about 5 minutes for my sandwich to arrive. Always clean & tidy. The staff are constantly clearing tables & wiping them down.

When me and my family go to shades we either have sandwiches or a proper meal e.g curry,sheperds pie etc.

Always a very good filter coffee here much better flavour and taste than Starbucks Americano friendly staff with no rush

Lunchtime meal good selection of value for money menu. No frills but efficient service cafeteria style in shopping centre
