I don't have too many issues with the food served here, but the value for money seemed amiss compared to the quality. If you're staying at the hotel this isn't a bad place for dinnder.

We haven’t been back for a couple of years after a previous so-so visit. But thought we’d give it another chance. We’re wishing we hadn’t bothered. We went on a Friday evening and there were only 2 tables occupied. Not a good sign. Starters were all ok. Mains were decidedly average. Style over substance is the phrase that comes to mind. The desserts were the most disappointing. The choices were - sticky toffee pudding; pavlova......or three scoops of ice cream. Really?? Very very limited for such a restaurant. I’ve emailed to suggest they update their website with the actual menus (no relation to the presented menus) and pass on my comments from our dinner. But no reply. I’m afraid to say we won’t be giving SG4 yet another chance.

I found the menu rather limited for vegetarians in comparison to similar venues but the food quality was excellent and the kitchen and waiting staff excellent. I loved the fact that diners can see right into the kitchen and admire the skills of the fabulous chefs.

Was such a surprise how lovely the food was and the effort that the chefs went to! Same menu for lunch and dinner but still fab. Preferred the dining room we sat in as part of spa stay instead of the main restaurant but still fab food. I had the pork for lunch and it was amazing! Had the duck for dinner but wasnt as impressed with it as the pork

Came here on a deal that included a glass of prosecco. Food was surprisingly good (recommend the risotto) although the service was a bit random. We ordered extra drinks and then when we came to pay no-one knew what we'd had. Also the staff have a habit of standing around chatting in groups by the door to the kitchen. Which isn't great if, like us, you have a table by the kitchen. The staff were pleasant but a bit amateur.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Had bought a Groupon deal for Sunday lunch here last year on the recommendation of a friend, and went today, but unfortunately didn't live anywhere up to our expectations. Venue from outside is really unattractive, however inside, very lovely. We were seated at a booth and having had our young daughter with us, we asked for a children's menu and we were told they didn't have one and all they had was the bar menu. When it arrived there was only adult meals on there, so I had to call waitress back to double check if we could have a children's portion of any of them as she didn't even think to tell us this when we asked for menu- my 3 year-old daughter isn't going to eat a full steak of adult burger and chips and I'm certainly not paying the full adult price. Waitress didn't even know and had to go ask. What restaurant doesn't have a kid's menu especially for Sunday lunch which generally is family based? Thankfully it was fine and she had a half size of fish and chips. My husband and I had chicken liver parfait to start which was tasty, mains were roast beef and roast pork which was burnt the whole way around and inedible- crackling as tough as old boots. Kale and carrots were served on the side- chef must have accidentally dropped a whole pot of salt over kale- it was ridiculously salty and this is from someone who likes plenty of seasoning. Yorkshire puds were enormous and I think were supposed to be the talking point of the meal, but basically the plate was taken over by an air filled lump of batter. I literally had to hunt a waitress down to get a wine menu and then had to chase further for them to come back and take order. These didn't seem to be a lot of common sense running around the place. The waitresses were very sweet when you eventually got talking to them but totally untrained, very young and lacked confidence and it seemed like they had been told not to look any customer in the eye. They didn't seem to be looking around to see if anyone needed their attention. Might I add that the restaurant was no where near busy either so this could have easily have happened. Lack of customers should have been a giveaway from the beginning. My husband left the majority of his food and when plates were cleared, all we got was, "finished?" Not even a full sentence and not even an acknowledgment the food had hardly been touched. Petit fours followed, which were ok. My husband compared it to a Brewers Fayre and said it was like where you go to eat your last meal before you die- given the absolute lack of atmosphere from no customers, mute waitresses and what sounded like a radio on the lowest volume in the kitchen. Visit was topped off by my husband reversing out of our parking space and hitting a number of wooden panels on the ground from building works - they were low enough for car sensors not to pick up, and were in a really inconvenient place with no cones or appropriate signing to beware of them. Safe to say we've given it a go, but will definitely not be going again.

Visited restaurant with several friends. We were given a menu that in no way resembled the sample menu previously received. Just bog standard boring pub grub with little choice. Two of the meals had to be returned as they were not cooked through. Starters were very tasty and my own meal was good. We did receive a generous refund but that is no compensation for a disappointing visit. Shan't return.

We had a Groupon deal for 2 nights with Dinner and Prosecco included on the first night, breakfast on both mornings and 'spa' access for £139. For that price there's very little to complain about, the one and only gripe is the 'spa' is not a spa... it is a small sauna (4 people MAX) and small steam room. To me a spa, as per the definition of the word, involves water, perhaps a Jacuzzi or pool etc. and not just the aforementioned sauna and steam room. With that out of the way, the rest of our stay was excellent, we were initially given a very small room (room 319) and upon raising this with reception we were then moved to room 307, literally twice the size with a bigger bed, and to be honest it was what we expected our room would be in the first place! The hotels customer service in changing our room with no hassle is why I'm giving them 5 stars instead of 4. The food in the restaurant is very good indeed, I highly recommend the Ham Hock and Pea Terrine to start, excellent quality. The chefs look like they pay a high level of attention to their work and I absolutely appreciate that. The staff in the restaurant were excellent too, friendly and attentive. A special mention goes out to Tom, he was one of our waiters and made an extremely good espresso martini for us on both nights we stayed. Top marks sir, your efforts are very much appreciated! I would definitely recommend staying here, however do not base your stay on the spa facilities. To the management: I would strongly recommend you install one or two Jacuzzis, to me, and everyone else that we talked to who stayed at your otherwise excellent hotel, it is a very much missed facility. It would complete your spa and it would actually allow you to use the word spa while being in keeping to the words definition. Kind regards and thank you for a very enjoyable stay! (More enjoyable had you of had a Jacuzzi!) R. Newton.

Ok, to start with, we visited the SG4 on Sunday evening and had pre booked. We needn't have booked as it was as dead as the dodo. We were the only ones in the restaurant for the majority of the evening and we even dressed up expecting a busy one!! Seated and served fast as there was nobody else to serve 😂 It was like our own private dining session, great. The food was excellent and the only criticism was that the portions are small and I had to get some chips just to fill me up. Can't remember the names of the dishes we had but I took some pictures which I added. Food is expensive but the quality dictates the price so £45 a head was worth the treat, drinks are fairly priced, so no surprises there. I think the decor in the restaurant could do with updating to bring a modern feel to what seems like a dated room. But really, I'm clutching at straws because the evening was great. Just need to work out when it's busy so I can get a feel of the atmosphere here, Sunday = dead.

I visited with my family yesterday after being reassured by the good reviews. The menu on Sunday consisted of a beef Sunday lunch, fish, a vegetable Wellington and one other thing I can't recall. We are vegetarians albeit my son is Vegan so when I called, I asked if the restaurant would cater well to us and was told they would. What a disappointment as we paid £100 for just the remaining vegetables on a Sunday lunch plate and to my shock, no gravy at all was provided. So my vegan son had a tiny plate of veg and we had the addition of a Yorkshire pudding. The only vegan pudding was sorbet which my son declined as they only had one flavour so he went home hungry.. not once were we asked if our meals were ok. I had to ask for some sort of gravy and was the only one to accept a tiny boat (I mean tiny) of meat gravy. My pudding was quite nice (bread and butter pudding, albeit it was the size of a brownie and I was still starving). Sorry but £100 which no offer to reduce the cost for the exclusion of meat on the Sunday lunch option was appalling. Had I known that the veg Wellington was a replacement for the veg only Sunday lunch option, (this was the same meal but with a meat replacement) I would've taken it as it could've certainly been more filling. I asked for some sort of nut cutlet and was greeted with a blank stare.. So my husband opted for this and luckily at least had more to eat although, again no vegetarian gravy offered so was very dry. What a bad choice this restaurant was and how behind this restaurant is for vegetarian and vegans.. are we that unusual? SG4 do you really think £100 was value for money for three small bowels of veg on top of a parsnip and 3 potatoes for four people? Sorry but never again.

Nice relaxed vibe, busy kitchen on show and consistently excellent food. The mains in particular are very well presented with imaginative combinations - I especially love the fish dishes, Stone Bass with peas a la francais is a delight (thick portion of bass pan fried with peas, lettuce, baby onions, cubed potato and cream) and sea trout with Rosti potato and pea purée also excellent. The food is not pretentious, reasonably priced for the quality and hugely enjoyable - congrats to head chef and team!

Why walk into SG5 (Hitchin) centre when you can walk to SG4 and work up an appetite. A fabulous brasserie withing Needham house hotel that a nice and up to date decor and lovely outside terrace. From beginning to end, the service was impeccable and timing superb. The menu offers a wonderful choice of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes and what we chose had great flavour combinations and was cooked to perfection. Try the duck liver parfait and don't miss out the English cheese board, the French better watch out. Good beers and wines a choice of lovely wines by the glass for incompatible couples like us where one does not like wine and the other can't quite manage a bottle. Fabulous night and now I know about SG4 brasserie, I will definitely be back.

This was a groupon offer for a two course lunch. Booking was easy and we even changed the reservation several times without a problem through groupon. Trying to get through to needham house however is a different story. The hotel itself is very modern and nicely decorated. We've stayed here before and enjoyed breakfast at brasserie sg4 so now we've tried out their lunch menu. We were seated quickly and drinks orders taken. We ordered the beef for our mains which was succulent and very enjoyable. This was accompanied by a Hugh Yorkshire pudding, a few roast potatoes which we didn't really enjoy, bit too dry and some tasty vegetables. There are no children's menus which is surprising as almost everywhere offers one these days. We ordered a burger and chips for a son from the bar menu. The chef was kind enough to swap the cucumber and onion relish for cucumber batons. The presseco went down well. We all enjoyed our mains and the desserts were great too. The cheese board was vast with five different cheeses, four types of crackers, frozen grapes to help cleanse your palette between cheeses and celery. The natural honeycomb and rose hip jelly were delicious. I opted for the chocolate and passion fruit cake and gelato which I enjoyed. The deal included coffee with petit fours which we didn't receive until our waitress noticed as we were waiting for the bill. We waited another ten minutes before leaving the table to pay at the till. I asked again for the petit fours and for them to be wrapped up to go. This was taken care of quickly. Overall we had a fantastic lunch in a lovely setting. Thank you to the lovely waitresses and the manager

The staff were very welcoming and obliging and that just added to the excellent experience we enjoyed. This hotel is fairly close to us so we will definitely return soon. Three out of four in our party chose steak for a main. I had to send mine back as it was overdone by a long way. The other disappointment was that steaks are served on ridged boards. It was therefore difficult to enjoy the accompanying sauce as it either ran off the board or into the ridges. I also feel boards are not particularly hygenic. The bread, all starters and the other main, guinea fowl, were excellent, as were the desserts. The cheese was apparently the best ever, and that was from a connoisseur.
