Senators Public House in Stockton-on-Tees

Used to come here years ago and were driving past and thought let's pop in. Decor is definitely a bit dated but the place was clean. Staff were nice. Ordered food and it came very timely .... and what a delight! Absolutely wonderful home cooked style food. My steak pie was like a Sunday lunch and my wife's fish goujons were plentiful and really lovely. Went out of our way to tell the staff how nice it was and they were delighted .... always give praise when praise is due!! These local places need to be supported because they are an absolute delight.

Looks a bit outdated from the outside inside a bit dark but with lots of memorabilia spread all round makes it a bit perky the food was to die for especially the steak pie and you get ample portions friendly staff willing to help with our needs

Looks dark and dingy but every corner has a theme from aush to America menu is simple bit the food is the best we had in stockton. I had the steak pie it was home made full of mouth watering meat and the chips perfect ,my wife had the chicken curry with rice and the same beautiful chips

Used to be a regular place to visit for a quick lunch. No idea what is going on nowadays! Visited recently simply to grab lunch and be away again. After taking our order for food and drinks and taking payment the waitress came back over to tell us one of the dishes was unavailable (This happened on two consecutive weeks). Having started our drinks we stayed and ordered a different dish. Three weeks later, we are back BUT this time ask if the dishes we want are available BEFORE we order drinks. Barmaid checks with kitchen and yes, all good. Ten minutes later, we hear her tell other customers who are ordering 'Everything is on'. Twenty minutes after ordering she comes to the table and tells us the meal we ordered is not available, also telling the other customers the same! Absolute con, a perfect way to get drinks money out of people who are purely wanting something to eat, drinks being the add on. Brilliant way to fill your till - take people's money for drinks they don't want if food isn't available .... only customer doesn't know that until after handing over their money! Will not be wasting my time in this place again.

Always very good home cooked food. Never been disappointed. It’s a clean and friendly pub. I highly recommend it for couples families and groups of friends.

It was nice to have our local pub back open and back to serving good food. The pub reopened last night. We went tonight for tea and it was like we had imagined. Lovely food and service, the covid one way system made it a different experience. Did we're feel safe, without a doubt, very safe. A thoroughly enjoyable tasty aell cooked meal for both of us, cheers Dave and the rest of the staff.

Not sure what has happened to this pub, it used to be so so friendly.. It now seems to be ran like an old fashioned social club.. The general consensus is that this place now is extremely unwelcoming to non regulars, this certainly is my opinion also.. Of particular note should be the absolute appalling attitude of the barmaid (who I would say is in her 60s), she will literally go out of her way to make you feel as unwelcome as she possibly can.. Which is interesting as Senators1974 limited has made a loss every year since it was incorporated in 2013, and is currently insolvent... Just seems very odd behaviour for a business losing money every year.. I would say that the barmaid as mentioned above should most certainly not be working in the service industry.. Senators.. you are simply alienating your customers that stick cash in your till.

Had 2 meals recently , Gammon one week and Chicken, ham and leek pie 2 weeks later, both excellent meals. Well cooked and served in a timely and efficient manner. Overall the chicken, ham and leek pie edged it, nice and tasty, not on the menu all the time, so keep your eye out for it

Twice called in this modern build pub, it looks as bad as it sounds, tried the real ale on each occasion and found it disappointing and not well kept, they have some interesting decoration with old LP sleeves and signed footy shirts but got a better pint in Stockton FCs club house opposite

I called in and had lunch the staff are always very friendly .the food was delicious .the only problem on that day was they had a crowd of young people in who had been to a funeral .they were over the top loud .to say they had been to funeral was a bit disrespectful to the deceased .they were reminded that it is a small pub and on a Saturday can be busy .1of them actually jumped over the seating to sit down and they were told not to bring their own food in which they totally ignored .they were so loud some of the regulars were not going to stay .it's a shame really because senators is a small friendly pub that tries to accommodate everyone .I am sure that they will not be missed by the staff or the customers if they never return .

The couple that run this pub are truly amazing people, they care for the people in the area, nothing is to much for them. They do so much for different charities it truly is an amazing pub to visit. The staff are very polite, the food is excellent even if they are feeding 20+ people all at once which they have done on many occasions for our Branch socials. The portions are a very good size and prices are very good. I have yet to eat anything on the menu that is not amazing. try the steak pie, or fish and chips, the quiche , the curry's everything is amazing. Thank you for all that you do for our Branch and The Royal British Legion

My mum and I visit this pub most weekends for lunch. The food is always lovely and good value for money. There is a range of home-cooked meals and a daily specials board that includes at least one type of roast dinner. The service is efficient and staff are friendly and welcoming. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this pub for a great value meal!

After a family funeral on Saturday we decided to go to this pub for food and drinks (unsure if pub is the right word maybe library?). We arrived about 12pm and as there was about 15 of us you can imagine the money we put behind their bar in food and drink.. the staff (although the girl behind the bar looked like she was at a funeral herself) didn’t have any problem in taking our money all day. However when the pubs regulars come in we had a very rude member of staff- the owner, bar staff I don’t know who he was? come over to us and say in a very cocky manner I may add ‘can you keep the noise down it’s not a private party’. I obviously told him what I thought of him speaking to us like that. For one nobody was insinuating it was a private party and for two I, along with the rest of my family, was absolutely appalled at how very rude he was. I could understand if we were all arguing and shouting causing a scene etc but when all we were doing was sitting talking between us I think it is absolutely disgusting to be treat this way. Especially when we put hundreds in that till throughout the day and he had no problem until his regulars came in we got treat and spoke to like dirt. Needless to say after he came over we all walked out and went to another pub where we could talk without anybody having a problem. Disgusting customer service with very rude staff, unless you’re a regular or want to sit with your family in complete silence I would strongly not recommend this pub.

Called in for tea time after quite a hectic day. The gammon was superb, not one of these performed gammons the real Monty. Wife had scampi which was as generous a portion as you will ever get. All in all excellent

We visited this pub after a family funeral 15 of us in total.Most of us ordered meals so needless to say we spent a lot of money between us all .This being a pub we were sat talking between us then a rude little man,a member of staff came up to us and said this is not a private party! He said we were talking too loud!.We were not causing any trouble or arguing or shouting just talking amongst ourselves.He was quite happy to let us talk when we were the only ones in the pub putting hundreds of pounds in his till but as soon as his regulars walked in we were treat in the most disgusting way with this little busybody vile man talking to us like something he had just stood in.The staff at this pub want to be reminded that this is a pub where people socialise not a funeral parlour!!! If you are not one of the regulars you won’t be made welcome at all.The bar staff are also miserable and you won’t be greeted with a smile either.I would also avoid the chicken Parmesan as it was more like pedigree chum even my dogs wouldn’t eat it when we took it home for them.We all walked out of the pub to go somewhere that was more like a normal pub and not a funeral parlour.Would never return to such a disgusting place.

Always a fantastic time in the Senators. The staff and particularly the landlord and landlady are especially welcoming and can’t do enough for you. The pub has a very comfortable atmosphere no matter when we go in. They all go that extra mile to make sure customers are happy and enjoying themselves, whether it’s just for a drink or a meal. By the way the meals are excellent.

I had lunch there today (28/12/18) with my wife and 2 friends. The landlady took our order in a courteous manner. The home cooked food arrived together and we all enjoyed it. A warm friendly welcoming pub. Clean and tidy. I've never had a bad meal in there. Value for money too.

Visited today for food with family. Was greeted by friendly staff as always. The senators provide a warm welcoming atomosphere and the food was homemade fresh and tasty. Would highly recommend.

Food was superb as always. Never disappoints, friendly helpful staff made to feel very welcome. We had the Christmas fayre menu.

As paying customer's we expect to be treated with a certain amount of basic respect. We bought 4 drinks between us in an hour. From the moment we walked in the barmaid was shooting us furtive glances for no clear reason. I do believe it is quite normal to seat yourself before going to the bar. You say we "made ourselves comfortable" as if you don't wish your customers to be comfortable. I think that speaks volumes. Please see the below response to "poor customer service" and decide if this is a place you really want to visit with such a disgusting response- and from the "management" no less! Not only is the response entirely inaccurate but also exceptionally crass. An otherwise reasonably located and well priced pub let down by staff with personality problems.

We had family visiting and being totally bored of “ chain pubs” all serving identical food, we were looking for somewhere that served homemade meals. A friend recommended Senators, so we gave it a try.

I called in as I was on my own for tea. Called in to watch the second half of Germany's exit. I ordered rosary pork dinner and not what a delight, or wad as good as seeing Germany very breast. The pork was the best I had ever tasted, superbly tender, it melted in your mouth. ☆☆☆☆☆+.

Great home cooked food served with a smile. Chilli, Steak pie, Chicken goujons - all superb & great value. I would thoroughly recommend this family run pub. Plus Liverpool 1 up in Champions League!!

Senators never fails to impress, we cannot fault the meals on every visit the specials menu as well as the standard menu offer tasty homemade VFM. If you have not tried it you are missing out.

My wife and I called in for lunch after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor and we were most impressed with our visit. As we walked in the tables and chairs reminded us of a working man's club but everything else was great. The staff were friendly and attentive and gave us good service throughout our lunch.There was as good range of meals and snacks available on the menu plus a variety of specials - all at very reasonable prices. Our meals - chicken parmesan and mince with dumplings were fantastic! The portion sizes were really generous and amazing value for money. The drinks prices too were very competitive. We will definitely make a return visit when we are next in the area.

This is a regular treat for me and my wife for lunch, super friendly staff and the best steak pie ever made.

This is a good pub with good beer and clientele too.

Visited with an old friend for lunch. Thoroughly enjoyed the freshly prepared meal. Had the home made steak pie, which was delicious. I would say the portions are very generous. Friendly staff, nothing too much trouble. Will definitely visit again.

To look at from the outside it is not somewhere I would choose as it looks (to my eyes) like a private social club. However, friends had invited me to dinner there and inside it is quite a different matter. The lighting is discreet, the service is excellent and the food (although not terribly adventurous) is very tasty, well cooked, MASSIVE portions and incredibly cheap.

Took my Mum for an early dinner. She had prawn and salmon salad, oddly with roast potatoes but she enjoyed it. Mince and dumplings was pleasant but nothing special. My Mum had cheesecake for pudding. The plate was warm, suggesting it had been defrosted in the microwave. My latte didn't taste very authentic. Reasonable food, reasonable value, good service.

Can't fault the Sunday lunches. Generous portions & value for money. Friendly staff, nothings a trouble even with a boisterous 3 year old in tow. Will be back to sample the meals during the week.

Popped in for our lunch as we had the decorator in. Opted for the liver n onions, it was lovely. Nicely served by our waitress Andrea. Good food, good atmosphere, excellent staff All in All a bloody good pub

I don't eat here as often as I should.Nice sized menu the most expensive meal is the Gammon steak at £7.99(I think).The daily specials are my favourite proper meals Roasts,mince and dumplings that real home made smile on your face lunch.Family run and they always have time for you. Give them a try I know you will like it.

First off, i would love to give them 5 stars, but i find the menu is a bit small, but pub classics are alive and well so to speak ! They also do specials and a pretty good chicken parmo :)What you get is freshly made, using excellent produce and you get great value for money,The staff have changed over our many visits, but they are always friendly and helpful and patient !

Friendly, down to earth atmosphere in this family run pub. Food is truly home made by the family who run this place, good food, well presented and well cooked, good portions without being overwhelming. Just perfect!

Decided at the last minute to go for a dinner and opted for Senators, wide range to choice from the menu as well as the specials board which is outside near the entrance door, went for the cornbeef pie which came with potatoes 2 veg and a Yorkshire pudding. Food served in good time ,very tasty and value for money

We went to the Armistice remembrance night las night and it was one of the best nights out we have had for a long time.Dave and Andrea put on another cracking celebration. Comprising of wartime food and the Lancashire Belle who was as great as ever, singing all the old time songs - Brilliant. Dave and Andrea obviously put a lot of work in to making it a great success. A classic example if you put a lot in, you will get a lot out. Roll on April 23rd next year for St. Georges night

Been here a few times. Always very friendly. Strange but quirky decor which keeps conversation going. Great drinks prices and the food is great. Just finished the Parmesan and really enjoyed. Also helped out with the goujons which were equally as good. Few more pints then off home. We will be back.

Wanted to eat out on Saturday tea time. Came across this place after visiting supermarket. I have coeliac disease and wasn't sure if they'd be able to cater for me My fears were soon put to rest as soon as I spoke to the landlord. So friendly and helpful and had time to discuss my requirements fully. I was with two friends on this visit and I must say the food and the service was about the best I've had and the cost you ask. I was well impressed. Excellent value for money A great place to go with friends. Looking forward to returning soon. Gets 5 stars from me.

Senators is a handy place to have lunch before or after doing the supermarket shop. The pub is pretty quiet and a bit dated but we find that relaxing as you are not rushed out. The food is well cooked and reasonable price. Usually there is a roast of the day, and home made pie of the day ( they are yummy). The sandwiches also look nice although I have never tried them. They also make a good pot of tea, a must for ladies that lunch. Staff are pleasant and make us feel welcome

Food was excellent bit pricey but you pay for quality, service the same , atmosphere all friendly and a laugh. Strongly recommend

Called in to "Senators" again for our Friday tea. The homemade corned beef pie was so lovely, one of the best I have had. It was cooked absolutely splendidly and served with potatoes, cabbage, turnip and a little side salad. But importantly with a smile by very pleasant, happy staff. All washed down with 4 great pints of "Hobgoblin" real ale. Good pub food, and excellent variety for kids, who also get colouring in pictures and crayons to occupy them.

Called in to "Senators" for our tea on Friday 6th Feb, what a really nice surprise. It wasn't just Cod & Chips. You had a choice of Cod Loin or Fillet. It was cooked absolutely splendidly and served with a smile by very pleasant staff. All washed down with 4 great pints of "Old Thumper" real ale. Good pub food menu and excellent variety for kids, who also get to do a bit of colouring in to keep them amused. Defo will be going back for lunch or tea, something her for everyone. Daily specials can be Liver & Onions, Homemade Steak Pie, Sunday Roasts. A little gem on my doorstep and I didn't know, but I do now.
