Visited on the Bank Holiday weekend, which - to be fair to Semz, and indeed every other cafe on Roman Road - meant they were clearly up against it in terms of delivering food orders. Very friendly staff member took our order, one of which was the vegan breakfast, known on the menu as the vegan delight. The items on the menu for this dish were listed thusly: hash browns, sautéed spinach, vegan sausage, bubble & squeak, grilled cherry tomatoes, Heinz baked beans. What arrived was a fried egg, spinach that was visibly dripping in butter, a 'vegan' sausage that appeared to contain an unholy amount of dairy-based cheese, as well as most of the above items. There had already been a (somewhat understandable) wait on food, and the server was already visibly flustered with other tables complaining and or indicating that they would like to be served. It seemed incredibly unfair on them having to be the face of a kitchen that can’t work out basic things such as whether a fried egg belongs in a vegan breakfast. Looking at the wider menu, it might be that this place tries to cover too many bases, and would be better off honing its craft at a few select areas, rather than promising grill, roast, sandwiches, wraps, breakfasts, pancakes and anything else under the sun. Dietary requirements need to be taken seriously before you can expand into those areas.

As a young 24 year old - I take pride in the beautiful places I get to sit and eat/drink. Upon arriving I was not greeted, instead stared down by the manager as soon as I approached a place to sit. I then proceeded to unpack my things and my charger so I could charge my phone whilst I order a coffee; something humans should have the ability to do. The manager stared me down making me so uncomfortable, I then questioned her and she responded ‘ I’m not staring’ (whilst she was quite obviously staring) she proceeded to walk over to me and ask if I was buying food. I said no and then she said I cannot charge my phone here and I asked if I should leave to charge my phone and she said yes. I then proceeded to telll her that it needs to change and her attitude towards me was DIRE. there was no ambience in this cafe / these people do not care about service. Please save yourself a trip to this cafe - there are so many wonderful cafes around east london. We really don’t need to be giving our money to institutions like this that do not care and are simply rude to customers.

My 16 year old daughter has just left and was eating in the cafe and found a large piece of plastic wrapping in her food. She informed staff who just told her it must be from the salad covering and no other assistance offered, she had to pay in full and they removed her plate and never offered her any more food and she hadn’t even finished her meal. My daughter being half Turkish doesn’t look it but understands and she heard the lady tell the man that she found plastic and the man called her a ‘ silly girl’ in Turkish. She sent me a picture of the plate when she found it underneath the pot when she moved it that contained the beans. I’ve been there once before and have been treated well but they seem to take advantage with younger people who feel to uncomfortable to speak up. If she had of ate it they would of had a problem then so how dare they treat this issue so poorly. Silly girl.. how rude

Went with a friend on Saturday just past midday. Was super empty which was quite a pleasant surprise - most likely caused by the rain. The host was lovely throughout. I got the halal breakfast as did my friend - it was huge! Very large portion - most likely will not be getting that again but it was nice. I prefer my eggs less runny hence the 4 star. Place was clean, food was good and the service was great. Also pretty good price too so all round, lovely start to a weekend! Thank you!

My partner and I have eaten here manu times as it is local, reasonably priced and the food is good. The staff have always been very friendly and we feel very welcome everytime we go there. Although we love living in East London, it is difficult now to find many cafes that don't charge you a ridiculous amount or throw avocado on everything. Cafe Semz is a 'proper' cafe.

My friends and I try to find nice, local cafes at which we can do work in the area. I won't be putting this place on our list. They boldly advertises free wifi on their storefront, but once I ordered I was informed that it is only for customers who spend 7+ pounds (the same thing happened to a pair who arrived shortly after me). What's more, almost all of the items on their menu are well below 7 pounds. Why discriminate against customers who don't want to buy the most expensive things on the menu? As they call themselves a 'cafe,' it should be completely normal to order just a coffee and something small to eat. At the very least this should be made clear to customers before they order. Quality of food was OK for the price, but it was very cold inside.

This café is run by two friendly sisters, Sema and Semra. Along with their staff, customers are assured of a warm welcome. All food is cooked on the premises and portions are plentiful. As well as the menu there are also daily specials available along with hot and cold non alcoholic drinks. Many customers return daily and are on first name terms with the sisters. there is an accessible unisex toilet and entry to the café is step free. There is an eastbound bus stop served by routes 8 and 339 outside the café. It is open every daily from early morning to around 5pm. A meal and drink will cost around £7.00 and represents great value for money. Turkish breakfasts are also available. It is an ideal pit stop if visiting Roman Road Market. A newspaper is sometimes available and a T.V. is sometimes switched on. I have been visiting Semz for many years and will continue to do so.
