We literally came to look ahead for coming here on a quiz night, it seems quite underhanded in precooked tables for supposed owners as one of the bar staff asked what the table staff had done with the reserved sign which he said was niw in his pocket!! What hope have ordinary members of the public??

We popped in for a drink but left due to the poor attitude of the woman behind the bar who appeared to be annoyed that due to no seats available we would go elsewhere. Looks a nice old pub but won’t return. Looking at previous reviews perhaps the owner can remind this lady that being rude isn’t in the job description.

Old waterfront pub owned by Ian McKellen. The staff he carried as Gandalf from LOTR is displayed behind the bar. The food was tasty, and they had a number of nice ales on tap.

Fabulous old riverside pub. Previously part owned by Ian McKellen who lived close by, hence there is some tribute memorabilia such as a gandalf statue. The pub also has dickens links and has many pictures on the walls related to him. The balcony is a lovely spot overlooking an Anthony Gormley statue which is uncovered at low tide when a small ' beach' appears. ( Similar to the ones in merseyside). With the sound of the waves lapping on the shore you could almost be beside the sea.

We couldn't get in because our son is under 18. This should be communicated somewhere, otherwise you won't notice it until you're standing at the door. In the city center we didn't have any problems with a 16 year old coming in at any pub.

Lovely pub with great drinks options, reasonable pricing and a great view outside. Felt very peaceful. Only downside is the very strong smell of cooked fish that hits you when inside, think kitchens need proper extraction and double doors.

I got a burger, my wife got salmon linguine and our friends got fish and chips. None of them was good. The linguine was overcooked, dry, and had a strange taste, My friends didn't even manage to eat all their fish. They said it had no taste at all, and the crust was smushy. Only the chips were good. As for the service... I haven't been to another English pub, so I don't know if this is a thing in English pubs, but at this one no one bothered to tell us that it is basicly self-service. No one cleaned our table, and both the bar tender and the waitress seemed to have an arrogant attitude. I had to pay at the bar when I gave my order, and they didn't give me a receipt (which I forgot to ask for, though)

The Grapes Pub in Limehouse, London. Where the beer’s as dark as the Thames on a moonless night and the floorboards creak with the weight of 500 years of bad decisions. Imagine this. Sir Walter Raleigh supposedly set sail for the New World from right below this joint. Maybe he needed a stiff drink before the voyage or perhaps he just wanted to avoid the tab. Either way, history oozes from these walls like the ale from an unclean tap. Fast forward a few centuries and who do we find holding the keys? None other than Sir Ian McKellen. That’s right, Gandalf himself presides over this establishment. One wonders if he stands at the door, staff in hand, proclaiming “You shall not pass” to underage drinkers. The pub’s interior is a tight squeeze, much like the waistband of a man who’s had one too many of their famous fish and chips. But what it lacks in space it makes up for in character. The wooden paneling and low ceilings whisper tales of sailors, smugglers, and the occasional literary figure. Charles Dickens himself was a patron, perhaps finding inspiration for his dreary characters in the bottom of a pint glass. Venture out back and you’ll find a deck overlooking the Thames. On a good day it’s a picturesque spot to contemplate life’s regrets. On a bad day, well, at least you’re close enough to toss them into the river. In summary, The Grapes is a place where history and alcohol intermingle like old friends who can’t quite remember why they stopped speaking. It’s worth a visit, if only to say you’ve been and to ponder how a place so steeped in history can still serve a pint that’s just a tad too warm.

Lovely quaint pub, of course the thrill and it’s reputation entices a LOT of people so the turnover of people is relatively quick and it does get quite noisy in here. Obviously, being in London, I feel it’s more expensive than other places. Despite it being delicious, the portion of the fish and chips isn’t £17.50 worth in my opinion. PSA: If you’re tall and need to go upstairs to the toilet, mind your head 😂

We were very disappointed with our visit to The Grapes today (24/02/25). The smell of disinfectant hit us when we arrived at about 12:15, but after a while you seems to get used to it... However, shortly after sitting down, the landlady sat on the seat against the opposite wall, so that we were about 8ft from each other. She then took a telephone call from somebody doing a survey. This call lasted the best part of 20 minutes, to which she replied, in a loud voice saying either "agree", "strongly agree" or "i'd rather not say". It is bad enough when a customer makes a phone call, but when it is the landlady, that is exceptionally bad manners and rude. The outcome was that the whole experience at The Grapes was ruined. Would we go back? No, certainly not!! Would we give them a second chance? No, certainly not!!
