Sculthorpe Mill Restaurant in North Norfolk

When we visited with some friends today, I was very impressed about how accommodating the staff were as I have a dairy intolerance. The only reason why I haven’t given it a 5 is because unfortunately there wasn’t anything on the dessert menu I was able to have although having said that they were able to provide sorbet as an option for me

The Sculthorpe Mill is an absolute gem of a find. From the welcome to the check out, service is 100% - there's a genuine warmth from the staff towards guests. Food is amazing - we ate dinner and breakfast - having both a varied menu that changes regularly depending on the season. Good to see local seasonal produce being used wherever possible. Rooms are v. comfy and a perfect retreat after a fab. dinner.

We were there for dinner (as in lunch), great food, great service, great accommodations for my two year old niece, love the little nets to catch fishes! Extra special mention to the wonderful Zoe! Despite it being a relic, she took 90’s nostalgia photography in stride, and took two very special and sentimental family photos on my SpiceCam without any bloopers! A great visit, I would highly recommend 🩷

Outstanding location on the river Wensum, however on this visit the food was very poor three of us had the rump steak, all three steaks were very tough and hard to chew although the flavour was reasonable and cooked as ordered. The chips looked good but unfortunately very dry as if they had spent to long under heat lamps or similar. One of our party had the fish dish which she enjoyed we all looked on her enviously. Our to grandchildren well catered for and the staff very friendly and enthusiastic but not efficient probably students on vacation jobs. I regret not complaining about the steaks. This was in no way up to Michelin Listed standard.

Beautiful location and gardens ( without children’s play area ) but shame about the food . Came in March when had a brilliant lunch in the restaurant, but today burger was overcooked and cold . Herb crumb Sardines tasty but very expensive. Chicken pie to share was £40 !

We had an enjoyable meal until the dessert arrived. We had ordered Tarte Tatin for two people. It took quite some time to arrive at the table but when it did, unfortunately it was burnt. It was completely rock hard, and when I tasted a little of the 'caramel' from the plate it was black and very bitter. I returned it and asked if we could have another please. 5 minutes later the same dish was returned to us, and I was told "the kitchen says that is how it supposed to be"! I enjoy cooking myself and certainly know the difference between caramelised and burnt. We told them we did not want it thank you. We asked for the bill and on leaving I spoke to the manager and explained what had happened and was expecting some kind of apology but he said that they had experienced chefs and they cook how they wish. There was no attempt at conciliation whatsoever. There was a very pleasant lady on front of hours who was apologetic but said she had no control over the kitchen staff. It was a special Anniversary for my husband and I, and it certainly spoilt our evening. We have been dining at Sculthorpe Mill for 35 years, and have always enjoyed it, but it will be a long time before we visit again.

What can I say, the settling of this place is amazing, possibly one of the best in Norfolk. I ordered the pea and wild garlic soup (with goats cheese bread) and my brother ordered a beef burger with chips. When the soup came out the bowl was very small and the bread was the size of a matchbox. I asked for bread and they said I'd have to pay and when they brought me more out it was matchbox size again. The soup did not taste if wild garlic at all. My brothers burger was very dry but at least the chips were OK, one thing at least... All in all the chef comes across as lazy and this isn't good for such a lovely setting.

We had a fantastic dinner here on a Sunday. Regardless of whether you are inside or outside the surroundings are beautiful. The staff were all lovely and super nice to our dog too. The venison pie was incredibly tasty and the Guinness bread is definitely worth having as an extra! Would 100% recommend and can’t wait to come back.

We were in the area for a short mid week break and so pleased to find Scunthorpe Mill open for dinner as many pubs in the area shut Monday and Tuesdays. We received a very warm welcome and the Mill has been lovingly restored and is quite modern. Because we had the dogs with us we had to sit in the snug which unfortunately lacked a bit of atmosphere. But the meal was very nice, we started with the wild garlic soup and pear and Bingham blue greens before choosing the sea bream fillet and pork cheek masala for mains. We finished with the custard tart. The staff were friendly and attentive and we enjoyed the evening but did feel it was a little overpriced. I imagine this would be a lovely venue sitting outside on a summers afternoon.

Fantastic food and great service. Ginene served us and was absolutely lovely, very friendly and made us feel welcome. Food was delicious and fresh. The location is wonderful and the gardens are very pretty.

We had eaten here before and really enjoyed the food so decided to stay for a couple of nights and were not disappointed. We stayed in one of the small rooms and it was very compact. However, we had a pleasant view over the gardens and the bed was very comfy with lovely linen. We ate both breakfast and evening meals here and enjoyed them all. Special mention must go to the fabulous vegetarian breakfast - with lovely additional items such as avocado along with a big selection of other more usual items. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful and enjoyed the atmosphere and pleasant gardens. There are also some lovely walks straight from the hotel. We would certainly stay again but this time would choose a larger room.

One of the best restaurants we have been to, drinks and bar was very relaxing, staff really friendly. The Peytons pilsner really tasty and the bar snacks were really good quality, it’s worth taking that extra little time to visit this restaurant

Fine local produce cooked with flair and a sure touch. Intense flavours, elegant presentation, no fussy embellishments. The slow roast lamb, served as a whole shoulder for diners to help themselves, was outstanding. Interesting and extensive wine list. Attentive, friendly and caring staff. Beautiful riverside location too. The latest of several enjoyable visits and certainly not the last.

our third visit to this restaurant and another great dining experience. we love the top floor in particular so cosy and buzzing. despite it being full when we go there the service was prompt, thorough and perfect. food and drinks all delicious and even though the waiting staff were young they were warm and informative. great training going on here obviously and we would recommend SM. oh and the location is so suggestive and pretty.

We had a fantastic New Years Day lunch. The food was extremely tasty and we loved the decor and atmosphere in the upstairs restaurant. Only note is that parking is quite tight during busy periods! If you're part of a larger group definitely share cars where you can!

Delicious food - I would describe it as a modern take on trad English with local specialities. I cannot understand why some reviewers think the portions small! We (two greedy adults) certainly went away full and satisfied

Amazing. Very last minute lunch booking - 10 minutes notice after Wells was just too busy. Very warm welcome, super food, beautiful location, excellent service, dog friendly. This is how pubs should be. It’s on our list to revisit for sure.

Nothing is too much trouble at this place, all cocktails are made to order, so if you want a substitute spirit, just ask. The staff make you feel very welcome and service with a smile is in abundance. Menu choice is wide and includes sharing dishes, if you wish. All the food from starter to dessert were superb and so tasty. It’s a relaxed environment and not a rush to get fed and out as soon as possible. Well deserved place in the top 100 Gastropubs and such a lovely location on top of the river.

I'm so glad I decided to lunch at The Mill. I had a very enjoyable experience sat at a table by the window, looking out on the willow and the river. The staff were quick, attentive and friendly without being over bearing or intrusive. The menu, as in many of the country gastro places in Norfolk, was limited but there were vegetarian options and fish on the menu. Enough to choose from. Our lunch was well presented and delicious from the starter, potted duck with pickled cherries, to the chocolate pot dessert. I would recommend Sculthorpe Mill and will dine there again.

The Aviator at Sculthorpe newly refurbished & named.Friendly welcome.
