The Ladore Falls is a lovely old hotel which we have enjoyed a number of times over the years. My wife and I are an elderly retires business couple and booked a three night stay from September 8th 2020. Jane is recovering from major abdominal surgery and the trip was her first few days away after many weeks. We arrived after a 120 mile trip at 5pm tired and parked my wife’s modesty sized red sports car outside the main entrance while we unloaded our luggage. we queued at the reception desk and I asked if someone could help with 2 suit cases and 2 suit bags. A member of staff said she would try to accommodate us. At this point we were unfortunate enough to meet the General Manager although he did not introduce himself as such. “No we cannot help with luggage it may be contaminated” was his response. We moved towards the lift and he said “ I hope you are not going to leave your car there too long”. He was not impolite, just cold and totally disinterested. I asked how would people with more serious disabilities would manage. His response was “They simply wouldn’t come here”was his response. The lift holds 2 people and with luggage is very difficult especially as I have a chronic back condition. We arrived at room 331 and as we opened the door found another flight of narrow stairs to the room. By this time we were both exhausted. The room was comfortable but a little dated and there was a magnificent view over the lake. We found no soap in the bathroom and the shower tray had black mould around the edges. We found the bar area comfortable and the staff friendly and attentive if a little over familiar. As we sat there over a bottle of wine it was obvious that there was a training program. A number of people complained about wrong orders and excessive waits. Dinner on the first night was excellent. Food quality was good and the restaurant manager was first class. Dinner on the second night was also good but we waited 40 minutes between courses. Breakfast on both the mornings of our stay was first class. When we arrived back to the hotel after our first day we found dirty towels, dirty wine glasses, still no soap and an unmade bed. I tried for 10 minutes to contact reception with no response. We were eventually told that that because of COVID rooms were only serviced every third day. It was at this point we decided to go home and forego our final nights stay. We asked to see the manager and eventually a gentleman called Ritchie interviewed us and agreed to refund £320. He said COVID had presented great difficulties, which of course we understand. East European staff had returned home after lockdown. New summer staff had been recruited on the hotel reopening but with little or no time to train them properly. Government and head office policy was changing daily which was causing difficulty in running the business. Our conclusion is one of understanding, but also disappointment. £960 for a three night stay under these conditions is not acceptable. Had the general manager been more understanding and informative at the start we would probably have stayed the three nights. Our 6 star hotel in Beverley is the place we will remain for the foreseeable future. We did get one night refund for £320 for the night we didn’t stayRead lessDate of experience: September 2020

We had not been to The Riverside Bar for a couple of years and we were delighted to see that it had been refurbished recently making it a welcoming place with excellent food and service. The choice of food was great a day we enjoyed our dinner there. We will definitely go back there when we return to Borrowdale.

We were staying at the Scafell Hotel, where we'd had a superb meal in the restaurant the evening before. We visited the Riverside bar on site for an evening bar meal this time, and were disappointed with the food. I ordered homemade parsnip soup, which was like a tasteless parsnip puree and came with a very dry piece of ciabatta bread, no butter, and my husband had an average-rate hot-pot which he was surprised to find contained pieces of black pudding. If we return to Scafell hotel and want a bar meal, we will travel elsewhere for it, and preferably not to another dog-friendly eating area.

Staying at the hotel with our pet the riverside allows pets. Note you can't use the main restaurant located in hotel with pets. Food orders taken at bar and they do not take reservations. There is a specials board and regular menu, most dishes priced at £12.95. Particularly enjoyed lamb hentry served with mash and veg. Good portion sizes. Desserts around £6 Good too, loved sticky toffee pudding. Servers attentive and quick to remove finished plates. If staying in hotel you can charge to room. Liked the water bowls left out for dogs and dog treats sold £1 A bag.

Come here every year with friends while camping in keswick, always loved it! However on this occasion we were a little disappointed it was just getting on 10pm and we asked for coffees and were told the coffee machine had been cleaned and switched off! Little strange considering there were signs all over the bar advertising liquor coffees etc, so i asked for x4 teas again was told the coffee machine was off, im pretty sure tea only requires hot water, i work in a restaurant my self and would never use such a lazy excuse.

Ate here with some friends at the weekend. Have been here quite a few times over the years and it's a nice place which can get a bit crowded at times. Very dog-friendly. i don't think I've ever seen so many dogs in one bar so don't go in if you don't like dogs. The food was nice (i had the game caserole) with a big portion. the plate was scorching hot but unfortunately i couldn't say the same for the food in it which was lukewarm. Decent selection of beers and friendly enough but a bit more attention to detail, when it comes to serving the food. pity as it slightly spoiled a pleasant evening.

We have eaten here 4 times and found the food and service excellent. A little expensive at the menu price, but if you can get a Travelzoo (or similar) voucher for dinner b&b you can be sure of great value. If you are a real ale fan, visit the hotel's public bar where several draft beers are available.

I have never been to a restaurant where staff were so little service minded. Customer first does not exit here. We were 13 to celebrate a birthday. 12 ordered a dessert and the one (the host who had birthday) wanted a coffee for dessert. This was refused due to processes dictated by management, and management was not available. Coffee can only be served in the lobby. This would have ment that the host would have to move to the lobby to get a coffee when the rest would have been served the dessert. Finally, after discussing also with the guys at the reception, who was apparently the most senior member of staff available, the waitress served the coffee and was shouting at us and blamed us when serving it so all other clients looked at us.Unfortunately, the place does not only look like middle ages but customer and service policies seem to also date form those times.

We had a fantastic evening meal whilst staying at the Scafell Hotel - not usually a 4 course meal fan the balance the chef conjured up for our menu choice was a great credit to him and his team - a brilliant meal (and very enjoyable)

We only had a drink here but it seemed like a nice traditional pub. I have been told when the fire is going on cold days it has a very cosy feel to it. With only 3 benches by the river garden we were happy to get one and it was lovely to hear the water whilst having a drink.

We often pop into the Riverside Bar after being out on the hills. It's hit and miss with the bar staff, but today we had a barman who was polite and helpful. We had a couple of sandwiches (steak sandwich and a bacon and brie) which we asked for with wholemeal bread. We didn't expect the bread to be thin cheap sliced brown bread so that was a bit of a let down although the actual fillings were OK. Certainly not worth the price though - you'd expect quality bread in a sandwich costing over £5!There are also problems with flies in the bar - and this is something we noticed last time we were there too so not a one-off. Puts you right off your food when you have flies constantly buzzing around you.And also - as noted in other reviews, the gents needs looking at - or do they think that men don't wash their hands unless they are going for a 'sit-down' visit?

The bar at the back of the Scafell Hotel is just about the only place to eat at night if you're staying in the area and don't have transport, as we were when doing the Coast to Coast walk. So first piece of advice to anyone reading this, if you've got a car, drive somewhere else. Why?First impressions - the tables in the pub are filthy, the varnish/paint is coming off in places and there are flies everywhere. This is an establishment that serves food by the way.The staff are disinterested, and apart from one exception, miserable and unfriendlyThere is a strong signal for wifi - but mere customers aren't allowed to use it. After quizzing the one member of staff who could do something other than grunt I think I worked out that wifi is for staff use onlyFood is at best average, at worst poor and, of course, this is the heart of Lake District honeypot country so prices are sky-high for what you getSame goes for the beer - a reasonable choice but £3.60 a pint for beer that's not very well keptGeneral ambience of the place - it's just miserable in there and devoid of life and atmosphere.Usually I can think of at least something positive to say about places I visit, but I really am struggling to find something good to say about the Riverside Bar. I just wonder what overseas visitors think when they come to the UK and find beautiful locations like Borrowdale ruined by places like this.

Ate dinner here twice in a week as it was close to our campsite. Both dinners were good, especially the trout. On both visits we were lucky enough to get a table outside by the river. Staff on our first visit (Monday) weren't great, especially a rather snappy man. I figured he might have just been having a really bad day, so didn't let him put us off returning. Staff on our second visit (Thursday) were all different, and much, much better. It goes to show how staff impact on the overall experience. Inside of the bar looks like it would be cosy on a winter's night, but in the good weather the seats by the river were nice.

Good choice of real ales (reasonably priced) but the food was a little expensive, £12.00 for a burger? Staff were ultra friendly although very busy serving meals as well as beer. The menu was more or less the same as several years ago and the "specials" were the same each night we visited. The gents could do with a refurb, only cold water and the basin is in the cubicle so if that's occupied you can't wash your hands without a wait. Tip : give the battered fish a miss unless you like undercooked mush

Having searched for an hour or so to find a restaurant that was not a place that needed to be dressed in a suit and tie, the wife and I found Scafell Hotel and Restaurant. The surroundings are lovely and its location is great and I cannot comment on the hotel, however the restaurant leaves a lot to be desired and we were very disappointed at the quality of the food presented to us.I ordered the food at the bar as instructed and was surprised to find that payment was demanded prior to the food being served, however I ordered Codling fillet and chips with peas for my wife and a 8oz Sirloin steak for myself.Starting with the chips on both meals, they were not fresh and judging by their appearance I would have said they had been reheated from sometime before, maybe hours. The fish was undercooked and was raw in the middle and had not been filleted correctly as there were numerous bones that needed to be removed on each and every mouthful. The peas were hard and were undercooked. The steak was very thin and was quite tough however its flavour was OK, but was certainly not worth £15.95. A steak in my local restaurant this size would have been cooked better and would have been about £10 to £11.Although the meal was edible it really was not what I would expect from a restaurant that has the propensity to be a gold mine.We left very disappointed and after careful consideration we decided not to complain as they had already taken payment and the chances of a refund would have been small. It is therefore with some regret that I feel it necessary to publish this report on Trip Advisor.

We are regular visitors to Borrowdale and enjoy superb walks with groups of friends. More often than not the day is rounded off by a visit to the Riverside Bar for drinks and food. There are always a number of real ales available and a good choice of standard pub grub, on our recent visit I tried the special beef burger with blue cheese, it was delicious! Visitors need to understand that this a walkers bar, there will be dogs and people wearing wet hiking gear and yes the gents need updating. The bar is a great meeting point though and we have had many happy times there.

We called in here for a quick drink one evening as we have done many times on previous visits. However this time it was very disappointing due to the unfriendly staff who did not acknowledge me when ordering drinks. When they brought the hot drinks to the table the tray was put down abruptly again with no acknowledgement. Also the tables were untidy with dirty plates. Will think twice about calling in here again when there are places you get a much warmer welcome and made to feel like they want your custom.

We walked to this 'pub' which is actually the back bar for the hotel. Flagstone floors mean you don't have to take your boots off and the open fire kept us warm and allowed some in the group to dry their boots. Food was good - just what you would expect from the extensive bar menu. Jennings on tap rounded it off nicely. A good destination for a walk or stopping off point on a drive up Borrowdale.

We visited the Scafell Hotel for an evening meal whilst staying in nearby Seatoller. It turned out to be a good choice, and what one would expect from a country pub-like meal. The beer was cold and well priced, the food hot and filling. No frills but a good atmosphere.

My husband and I called for lunch today. There was no welcome to speak of, two girls serving need training in customer service. The food was ok, basic pub grub fare. But the decor and presentation of the Riverside Bar is what really needs attention. It is one of the many pubs in this country that is playing the " ye olde worlde pub " card ....when in actual fact it just hasn't been decorated, carpeted or given any TLC since the 70's ! Missing shades on the wall lights, bulbs out not replaced and general shoddy lazy presentation. I am afraid to say we will not recommend or return.

We ended up here at 3pm on a Sat in November, and they were still serving food...which is a note to point out if you are in the Borrowdale area looking for a late lunch! Good choice of drinks and lovely staff. Food was of a really good standard. The Homemade Steak Pudding was the best I have had in years. They also do a 2 pint beer carrrier to takeaway, which we thought an excellent idea. Highly recommend this pub.

My husband, myself and our 13 year old son visited The Brasserie two days ago on a Saturday evening. We were able to walk from our cottage accomadation to the Brasserie. On arrival to the venue we were very impressed by the beautiful driveway leading down to the Brasserie. The whole establishment is obviously very well kept with beautiful spring flowers and plants and lovely lighting down the drive. On entering the Brasserie however, we were suprised that the decor didnt appear to match the rest of the hotel. We were approached by a friendly waiter on arrival who took our drinks and food order promptly. He checked we were all ok during the first half of our meal and we felt his interactions with us were appropriate, not too overpowering or disinterested. My husband ordered the mushroom stroganoff. He felt it was quite ordinary and bland. I ordered the brushetta and a side portion of fries. I felt the brushetta was overpriced but the fries were beautiful. My son ordered the pizza which he said was really tasty! During the meal.another member of staff( female) arrived and we have to say it was quite an experience! We had ordered a second round of drinks. I had ordere a lakes gin and a small bottle of fever tree ginger ale to mix it with. I was allowing my son to taste the ginger ale from the bottle. The waitress appeared out of nowhere and snatched the bottle from his hand with a resounding"no!" It shocked us all! We reassured her that this was not an alcoholuc drink. She then commented in quite a rude manner when my husband wiped his nose gently on a napkin and also told us later on during the meal that she was used to working in the " posh restaurant". During our meal she stood over us on several.occasions which we felt was inappropriate and a bit unnerving! We felt she would benefit from some more training from more experienced members of staff. We did realise she was young and and was probably trying to.please (.a little too much). We were very patient with her but felt there may be future guests who may not be quite so tolerant! A little later during the evening my husband and our son went to use the toilet closest to the Brasserie. They came back and both told me there was smashed glass on the floor and a dirty nappy. My husband reported this to a member of staff from the spa team. On leaving the Brasserie we walked through to the hotel reception as we were all so concerned about the state of the toilet and wanted to ensure it had been sorted and the message had got trough. The lady on hotel reception didnt appear to know anything about this but we did see her promptly speaking to another hotel member of staff after our conversation. The only other disappointing part to.our meal was the cheeseboard. It sounded fantastic on the Brasserie menu but when it arrived we were informed that some of the cheeses were not available. The waiter did however add a few extra for us but we felt this could have been mentioned before we went ahead with the order. Sadly it was a disappointing experience as it could be a fabulous setting within the grounds of an obviously gorgeous hotel.

We were staying in Keswick on the first of November 2024 to celebrate two 50th birthday’s. Keswick was extremely busy and four eating establishments we went to couldn’t accommodate our party of seven. However the Lake road inn had vacant tables which was great and now I understand why. It was 2.30pm and the kitchen was closing at 5.00pm so they explained the menu was limited (fair enough). After viewing the limited menu we decided it couldn’t accommodate our party so thought we would have a drink whilst booking another venue on line for an hours time. Ordered a Guinness then a glass of Malbec. No Malbec and then discovered a lot of the ales were unavailable too. We decided this just wasn’t for us and said to the bar it doesn’t matter and left. We were chased across the pub by a member of staff with a card reader to pay for the half Guinness that was settling (the first drink on my order) he said I had to pay as it was wastage? Like nothing ever gets spilt behind the bar??.I reluctantly paid for it and asked for an additional empty half glass in order to share it so we could quickly move on. We moved out side and found the empty half glass was dirty and the Guinness had a black hair in the head. We poured it down the drain. We love Keswick and the people are lovely, friendly and accommodating. So please don’t waste your money at the Lake Road Inn. There are so many better establishments than here!! Avoid!! As a party of seven there for food and drinks we would have spent £200+, so their loss!! We had a lovely meal at the Pack Horse Inn. Lamb burger special was tremendous!!! I highly recommend the Pack horse inn, the pheasant, or the George. I can only hope The lake Road Inn falls into administration and a decent proprietor takes it over. Harsh but fair.

The state of this place continues its sad decline. Standards have dropped significantly since my last visit a couple of months ago. The men's toilets are an absolute disgrace. There's one serviceable cubicle- but the toilet bowl is hanging off the wall and the door lock has been bodged up so many times it barely provides the necessary privacy. The stench from the urinals is so bad - you can tell when the toilet door opens as it wafts into the pub. Not really what you want to be smelling when you're eating and drinking- it's bad enough when you have to go to the toilet . The staff are great but completely up against it as there are so few of them. Dirty glasses pile up on tables untouched. This place is desperate for a makeover. I for one won't be rushing back. I know the beer is cheap but, I'm afraid I'd rather pay "proper pub" prices and have a degree of comfort rather than sit in a what effective looks and smells like a cattle market. Come on 'Spoons. You can do much much better than this.
