Saracens Head in Babergh

Interesting and varied menu, good price, friendly helpful staff. We have small appetites, so just had a starter and dessert. Both were excellent, the dessert was light and fluffy. The pub had been recommended by a friend, so we tried it but it was so good we went back again the following day.

Excellent food and service, good range of drinks and easy to park. Location is easy to find as it's along the main road to Sudbury. Ideal to use before going to lavenham.

In all my years of dining out, the Saracens Head has to be the best home cooked food I have ever eaten The service was first class, the staff were happy and nothing was too much bother I cannot recomend Saracens Head highly enough, thank you for making my dads birthday a very enjoyable experience.

I liked the look of the Saracen's Head and after a medical appointment myself and my friend decided to have a little pick-me-up type of treat..Both the pub and the lovely barman were very welcoming to us...I enjoyed their beer battered cod and chips, from their Specials board and my friend chose Scampi and chips..The food was very filling and tasty..We would both highly recommend dining out here...Especially to our families and friends 😀 😊 🙂

Was thrilled to be revisiting one of my old regulars after many years. A family get-together over lunch. But have left in total shock and disbelief at the lack of customer service. At the end of the meal, we were asked if everything was OK. We reluctantly mentioned a small issue. Which followed with a totally defensive rude response from the waitress. The rudeness continued into a verbal personal attack without a single sorry spoken. We were then accused of being rude to the barman earlier when ordering drinks. Which was actually light banter between us all. But the most shocking ending to this is when 'said' waitress pushed past me to continue to clean tables, without a excuse me. Which led me to stumble! Probably best to mention, I was actually on crutches due to a severely bad back.... but still not a single sorry was spoken! Never have I ever seen such poor customer service!

We went here to have a nice family meal but as we were finishing our meal we had a waiter come over to see if everything was ok, we politely mentioned a small complaint regarding one of the meals we ordered, which then proceeded with rudeness from the waiter. Then when we went to pay and re-mentioned the complaint, this lead to a verbal attack on my family and I. We then got accused of being rude to another waiter which wasn’t true, we had actually had some banter with said waiter. We wouldn’t recommend this place, no focus on customer service at all.

We had a family lunch and wow I never knew I could be so shocked… we ordered our food and all was good. When food was delivered the chicken was a little powdery and at the end of the meal a waiter asked if everything was good with the meal. So we just politely brought up the little issue and she got very defensive and didn’t even say sorry. As we went to pay, the chef then said that she had tried the chicken and it was fine and there was nothing wrong with it. The waiter then was very loud about it and then pushed past us all to go and clearly the table and didn’t even say excuse me then accused us of being rude to her fellow colleague when we was previously having light banter with him.

I called in for lunch and had a really fantastic experience A great genuine warm welcome The real fires were brilliant on a wet miserable day Huge food choices and specials Sadly I only had time for a sandwich, one of those visits when you wished you could kick back and really indulge The food served to other diners looked great Can’t wait to return

We had lunch here yesterday with my brother in law and sister in law who live nearby. We were greeted warmly straight away and shown to our table, the barman/waiter was very friendly and helpful, there were several gluten free options for me as a coeliac, including chips cooked in a separate fryer, and several gluten free desserts too. Good vegetarian options and all four of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Would highly recommend and will definitely return.

Having just moved to the village, we scoped out our local pub and we’re pleasantly surprised it has a cafe too during the day. I love grabbing a coffee to go in the morning. The owner and staff that I’ve encountered are all lovely. The pub feels like a hub to the local community.

Just came back from a lovely meal, the food was tasty and a perfect portion size for a large amount of guests, the staff were really friendly and helped us with every request. There was 5 of us and we ordered steak and kidney pudding, fish and chips and the mornay…. pudding was massive so couldn’t eat any potatoes but I didn’t like the mash anyway, meat was lovely and soft in mine but the other person had meat that was quite tough …fish and chips was ok and the mornay came out as the winner my picky 97yr old mum ate nearly all of it but she couldn’t manage the salad and all the new potatoes lol

We were staying nearby but the gastropub and restaurant in Stoke by Nayland were a bit upmarket / expensive for our subsistence needs. Had we found this place at the outset then we'd have eaten here for each of our four nights, but in the event we only ate here twice. No website (so I had to call in to look at the menu) but they have a genuine 'specials' board which is tweaked daily depending on availability and their commendable desire to ring the changes. On our first visit we both had the steak pie as our mains which was exemplary - so good in fact that the obvious choice of chicken pie next time round was a disappointment by comparison (and £1 dearer, surprisingly) - but I've given them the benefit of the doubt and rounded up to 5* regardless for trying to please and having pleasant staff!

Lovely staff, got served straight way food came out fast. Been using this restaurant for a few years and never disappointed with the service or the food.

Great evening at the Saracens head at Newton Green wonderful hospitality from the staff and A friendly landlady behind the bar when we came to pay the bill There was four of us in this evening for a Christmas party menu which two of us had the salmon Parfitt and one of us had the Beef taco and the other one had halloumi fries with sweet chilli dip followed by two lemons souls and two turkey dinners with stuffing Chipolata and seasonal vegetables And then for desert we had traditional Christmas pudding and a chocolate and blackcherry torte was amazing the pub was decorated inside and out with Christmas lights and decorations which gave it that festive feeling highly recommendable

My wife and I had Sunday lunch there yesterday with my parents ... we have been before , have to say the experience was not as good as last time ... was very busy and service was very slow .. we had to chase up our main courses... and still 10 mins after that ... food is ok generous portions we found vegetables a bit dry ... seems a very popular place so maybe we were unlucky this time

Attended a Diamond Wedding celebration party the the Saracen's Head recently. This was our first visit to the pub and on a busy Saturday night. The friendly staff coped admirally and we found both the service and food to be excellent. Well done to all concerned, we would definitely visit again.

Had a lovely lunch at the Saracens Head - very busy - food was very good - had Chicken and Mushroom Pie with a puff pastry lid with veg from the specials board - it was delicious. Good sized portions. Service was a little chaotic due a wake being held at the same time. Overall a very nice lunch

Lovely old coaching inn with great character. Huge choice of food on the menu plus plenty of specials and vegetarian choices. Good prices and prompt, friendly service. We have had several good meals here and they are able to cope with a large group booking.

The Saracens Head is a 14th Century Coaching Inn at Newton, Suffolk, on the A134 road to Sudbury, it overlooks the Village Green has a classy interior decor and is rich in history with and abundance of original oak beams. It's a 'family run'' business with Landlady Beverley Faulkner happily overseeing the operation, her two daughters Hanna and Lisa provide an efficient waitress service and other support staff are Philip and Emily on the bar.

First visit tonight 7 of us for family meal for dinner . Excellent all round Quality Food great service and great value for money . Will be going back again

Forget the menu, look at the specials board, because they are just that, special. Be quick or your choice will disappear.

My husband and I along with three other friends met in the Saracens Head Newton Green Suffolk, we meet up every month. My husband and I have visited this pub several times and have been happy with the food and the service and so we felt confident in recommending the pub. One of my friends started of with whitebait and had eaten several bits when she noticed a dead hover fly sticking to the side of the bowl. We asked one of the waitresses to ask the chef to come and speak to me friend, my friend gave her the bowl to show the chef what was being complained about. The chef was quick to attend, she had her hands on her hip and said “ these things happen “ and repeated the phrase several. She never once apologised and as a gesture of good will offered not to charge her for the started. Quite honestly I felt her manner was a hostile one as she stood at our table and I think she felt good about herself not charging for the starter. I think she could also offered a drink. We know these things happen, she could have taken the “hover fly” to the authorities and let them deal with, one wonders if they would still score 5 in the rating. We all have worked in the public sectors for many many years and know how fickle people can be and we often let things slip by with no comment. Saying sorry really helps and I think she should have been offered and given another drink.

I did here good things about Saracens Head,but I was expecting better. You can get Ham egg and chips and steak pie and chips and lasagne too, but it's all conventional fare. Nothing like Fillet steak,Crab, Duck, Trout, Rack of Lamb or Monkfish you know dishes that make dining out a bit special. The service was very poor although the girls were polite enough they were inefficient in a dreamy way,nothing offensive just square pegs in round holes. All in all not good at all. The place was done and dusted and empty by 9.30, the salad bar being closed at 9. Certainly not going back on a Saturday night.

We called in for a pint and a light lunch after a morning's country walking.

We had passed this pub many times on the way to Sudbury and the car park always looked full, a good sign, so we decided to try it ourselves. We booked for four people and although during the week it was fairly busy. We were served by a friendly waitress, and the food was bought out in good time. The portions were large and the food good quality. There were no complaints from any of us and the only surprise was the bill, it was lower than expected ! Not often we say that these days, so if you are looking for good food and service at a reasonable price its well worth a try.

If you fancy a good, hearty meal in a traditional pub, The Saracens Head is just the ticket. I've visited here many times over the years as a couple, with family or as a big group of friends for some traditional 'pub grub' and I've certainly never left hungry! The portions are generous, providing good value for money, with lots of the dishes having the option of using the Salad Bar which is a nice touch. The pub is conveniently located just off the A134, overlooking the golf course, with a pleasant beer garden to the side which is lovely if the sun shines. I've always found the pub to be clean throughout with friendly, attentive staff and a laid-back atmosphere.

I visited here last night for my friends birthday and I found the customer service and food to be great.

The pub has an outdoor garden and is very pleasant. There is a specials board and full menu offering a range of food some of which come with the option of the salad bar. The only negative is that the salad bar looks like it is left out at night with celery curled and dried out food. If you are trying to eat healthy there is a very limited choice

We were visiting from France and had been to this pub 2 years ago when we had a really good meal.

We were searching for somewhere for a family meal in a busy bank holiday when we came across this gem. Welcoming staff, fantastic relaxing surroundings. Very good food which was very reasonably priced. Varied menu plus a large specials board. Well worth a visit but be aware on a Sunday we were told they stopped serving food at 6pm

Visited with my wife, sister-in-law, niece and her husband. The place is well presented and clean. has a nice feel to it with lots of space. There is a good menu to chose from and a large 'specials' board. Food was nicely presented and plenty of it. Two of our party couldn't finish their meals as it was too much.

We have been to the Saracens Head more than any pub in the area. Firstly it’s close to us, but mostly the food is always good, with a good menu. We had two lots of family call recently, fortunately we were able to book at short notice. Pity there is no carpet as the chairs make a hell of a noise when being moved making conversation difficult at times.

We had an excellent meal here with friends, friendly and helpful staff and a good choice on the menu as well as on the specials board, highly recommend the salmon and prawn gratin (this was on the specials board), and a good selection at the salad bar. Will definitely eat here again. The pub it's self is very welcoming too.

Aways a warm welcome at the Saracens. Good wholesome food with vegetarian options also available. I have read that it has recently been refurbished but to be honest it didn't look a lot different to my last visit 2 years ago. OK surroundings nevertheless.

Went here with my mum and grandad. Everyone had a lovely meal. They happily made a starter into a main meal size for us. Waiting time wasn't long at all even with large groups there too.

Visited with friends again last night and got a warm welcome and fast friendly service as usual. The normal, excellent menu was complimented as always with a wide array of dishes on the specials board so I was totally spoilt for choice. As it was our last meet up before Christmas we opted for the Roast Turkey with all the trimmings. One of my friends is not to biggest turkey fan but loves all the pigs in blankets etc so asked if she could swop the turkey for a non meat option. They could not have been helpful enough and offered to subsitute it with a choice vegan or vegetarian roasts. The food was really tasty and beautifully cooked. Enjoyed a fantastic raspberry and white chocolate roulade for dessert which was full of flavour.

Wonderful service and impressive selection of vegan options. I highly recommend the vegan caramel and chocolate brownie!

Went to the Sarcens head for Sunday lunch had roasted minted lamb roast dinner lovely and melt in the mouth lamb super service and friendly staff when I went through to the bar I saw a Christmas party menu which I was looking at great choices so i grabbed a copy of the menu and spoke to the young ladies behind the bar about booking it for our next visit in December while it is on highly recommended a visit we love it at the Sarcens head and always plenty of choice on special boards and printed menu and always a different selection of desserts

Have been to this restaurant before and the food was good. Apart from rampaging children that were annoying a pleasant visit. Planned another visit this December with several friends and told Xmas meal or nothing. Having problems with different foods would make it impossible for us to eat the selection on offer. No movement on food offered. Will not be going here again.

My husband and I came here in passing. We had a pleasant greeting from the lady behind the bar who showed us to a table for 2. I said we have a baby with us and therefore would prefer the space a table of 4 provides. She directed us to a table by the fire. Said fire wasn’t lit, well turned on as it’s electric, which was a shame as it was a cool autumn day and would have given the restaurant at least some kind of atmosphere

This beautiful family run restaurant is amazing. Great home cooked food and very well priced. I would recommend to friends, family and business workers. They cater for every person and every occasion.

Been here a few times, generally for family lunch, occasionally for dinner with friends. Very informal, but in a pleasant relaxed way. Happy and able to cater for all ages. Menu is fine - not the finest haute cuisine, but good pub grub. Carvery sometimes available. Good beers. Overall, worth a visit.

On arrival the newly painted outside is a beautiful colour. On arrival staff were friendly and after ordering our drinks we were told to take a seat and out offer would be taken. Great choice of menu and special boards. We decided to have the lamb moussaka with chips and we were not disappointed. A large hot fish of moussaka, chips and salad bar. Very delicious and very filling just what was needed thank you.

This used to be our favourite local restaurant but we've noticed recently that standards have dropped. A booking we made a week in advance wasn't booked, the specials on the board used to be good value for money, now they work out quite expensive and today our chips were barely warm. We complained and their answer was to microwave them hot! Yuck So much for crispy fresh chips. No More.

Four of us went for a lunchtime meal yesterday, 17th August 2018, to celebrate my auntie's wedding. We were all very pleasantly surprised at the wide variation of the menu plus the specials on the wall. The food was absolutely fantastic, piping hot, really tasty, loads of it and all served by extremely cheerful, helpful, professional and friendly staff. The prices were very reasonable too. Next time we make the journey down to Suffolk from Lincolnshire we'll make a point of coming back. Excellent!

Lovely to revisit the Saracens Head again last year we went by and the roof was being done so we pop in this weekend while with some family for lunch with the dog, As dogs are welcome in the bar area. When we pulled up it was nice to see the pub had been painted, it’s like a postcard image of a lovely pub with the golf course close by,Once again our meals where spot on and perfect. Highly recommend a visit.

Well I started with the tomato soup on a family meal out and it was hotter than the centre of the sun. I suspect it tasted nice but once I’d burnt my mouth my taste buds were living in fear.

The food would have been so much better if they had nor smothered both in so much melted cheese . service was good and its a nice pub to dine in but based on the meal we had we wont be returning .

Coming back from a morning out we decided to stop at the Saracens for lunch. We were not disappointed. The menu and specials board offering a great selection of dishes. I had a lovely grilled fish and opted for a visit to the well stocked salad bar. Fabulous. My husband had a meat pudding and veg which he thoroughly enjoyed. He didn't really have room for dessert but had one anyway. Can't recommend highly enough. We will be visiting again soon.

Good menu and specials boards with various choices. We both opted for beef and vegetable pie, with peas and roast potatoes off the special boards (turned out to be minced beef and not diced beef) but was very tasty. Service was good initially but we finished our meals expecting our table to be cleared after the main course, but with a wait of over ten minutes no waitress appeared so we decided not to have a sweet, went to the bar, paid up and left.

Evening Family meal during the week. Food was amazing, staff very accommodating. Delicious food, great surroundings and attentive staff. Highly recommend.

We were a table for six for this happy occasion. The service was very good, lovely waitresses. The food was excellent, hot, well cooked, large portions which beat a few of us. A really pleasant family atmosphere. It made the day very special.

On Sunday,29th October our family booked a meal at Saracens Head. The starters were Ok however when it came to main meal one persons meal was forgotten. When they did deliver this meal it was incorrect and had to be sent back. The steak pudding when it did arrive was not heated all the way through. This was not the issue. Two members of our party had steak and kidney pie both were extremely sick Sunday evening. I would not return to this restaurant

Made a last minute booking for 10 which pretty much maxed out the restaurant. This did not phase the staff in any way whatsoever, the selection of pub classics ordered all arrived well cooked, nicely presented and served within a few minutes of each other. They obviously know what they're doing. Nice surroundings and very reasonably priced. Recommended.

Had been out all day with family from York & once again we all went to the Saracens Head & once again everything was perfect.

Los precios han subido, las raciones han bajado, los platos de ensalada tienen más pequeñas y para colmo de males, no volver a la barra de ensaladas" nos dejó a todos desorientados. . . ¿Qué hace una porción de costo ensalada. Así podremos.. . Pero se dejó harto con la actitud. Así que ignoró. .

Llegamos para una comida a las 5 de la tarde del domingo 23 de julio y en principio todo fue perfecto. Pronto después de nuestra comida a un grupo grande de hombres borrachos llegó y me senté cerca de nosotros. El idioma era asquerosa un montón de insultos y hablando de juguetes sexuales. Dos parejas vinieron inmediatamente a la izquierda. Un hombre en el grupo mantuvo disculparse pero el personal no hizo nada. Porque sólo estábamos bebiendo que deberían haber sido pedido ir en el jardín. Nos preguntó si todo estaba bien cuando pagamos y me dijeron que estaban lejos de ruido y molestar a los otros comensales. El personal de respuesta era "no pasa muy a menudo".

Cant fault it. Its clean food is good and they have the much sought after salad bar!Can be cold out the back though bring a cardi!

Had a family meal last Saturday evening here after giving the place a miss for a while due to a really unpleasant owner at one point.Staff are all new...and more pleasant by far. Food was quickly served and at fair prices of a good standard. Value for money I call it.Only complaint was that I was overcharged by a starter too many on the bill but I was given the opportunity to check the bill before paying.... and I never did that. Then got home and checked to find four starters for three people.Otherwise...a good experience and we will return again. Clearly ...a work in progress but on the right track for sure.
