The food was really nice. But the staff was a little weird, as one of the server gave off mean girl energy and was snarky with his little comments, quite frankly rude, as if he was looking down on us. He made us feel uncomfortable, every time he came to take the order. The set up was nice, even talked with the chef, super nice and good food. Could work a bit more of the service staff.

Me and my boyfriend came for a date night to san carlo about 2 weeks ago. Greeted by welcoming polite staff and shown to our table. Within minutes we had a drinks order taken and a food order followed by very helpful staff. My boyfriend had recently had a wrist operation and was in a cast and sling and he ordered a pizza, when the waiter brung over the pizza they offered to take it back and cut it for him, very lovely touch we thought. Amazing food and drinks, big portion sizes. Throughout the dining experience the staff were very helpful and polite and would Definitely recommend san carlo for a date night/special occasion meal.

Nice meal and served very quickly.only issue was I ordered the crab and lobster ravioli which was not hot.more like luke warm. Great atmosphere but real criticism was there seemed to be some new staff starting who dropped a couple of utensils to be greeted with distain looks by their more senior members of staff. A note to all.paying customers feel embarrassed if they see people being chastised.we all have to learn.

Lovely marbled interior. Very light and airy inside which was refreshing. Whenever I come here I always get the garlic butter scallops because they just never fail everytime. Also the Buratta starter is another good one that I recommend as the buratta is so creamy and pairs really well with truffle and cured meat. The staff are always friendly and I do think the prices are reasonable :)

Felt spoken down to by the bloke who took our order, like we were some kind of nuisance. Starters came quickly, but they forgot one, and his then finally appeared after we had all nearly finished ours. Mains took a very long time to come out (the table next to us, ordered, had starters, and mains and finished within this time!). I called "excuse me", for a member of staff who turned then continued to walk away, until someone else noticed and he finally came over. When I asked where the mains were he said they were made fresh and would be 3 minutes. Another 10 minutes later they finally arrived, warm, but no means piping hot. Friends were then made to quickly eat their last piece of garlic bread as the waiter needed the stand elsewhere. When I said I was disappointed with the service given for the price expected, I was spoken over, and then had the so called manager sent over. He told us we were given the best seats (at the front , chilled by aircon) and that he would see what he could do. He removed the "10% optional service charge" that is stated as optional on the online menu! Not exactly doing a favour! As a restaurant manager, I would be embarrassed with this experience. I definitely won't be rushing back, nor would I ever recommend anyone else to go here.

On Wednesday, 24th July 2024, we celebrated our son’s graduation in Physics from the University of Bristol by booking a table at this delightful Italian restaurant. As an Italian myself, dining here felt a bit like being back home. The starters were delicious, and the atmosphere was lovely, with really friendly staff. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience, although some of the dishes were a little too salty. Thank you, San Carlo, for the lovely experience.

Food was good - not great. This is definitely a popular place and appears to be frequented by a lot of celebrities in the past. Service was great. If you were looking for a little chili kick to your Italian, then this is the place to go for you. I am not a big fan personally, but concede a lot of people will like this place.

Had lunch at San Carlo with a good friend of mine. Minestrone was decent, Arancini was delightful with the sauce, although a little bit too oily. I also had their famous Spaghetti Frutti Di Mare (Seafood Spaghetti) and having ordered this before, it tastes just as good everytime! Highly recommend this main! The french fries with truffle and parmesan were also really nice and crispy. I'd say their mains and sides are better than their starters. Mocktails were good. Atmosphere and service is excellent, very welcoming. Most authentic Italian restaurant in Bristol, would recommend if you have a budget of £40pp+.

I have visited this San Carlo 4-5 times and whilst I usually have an exceptional experience, I was extremely disappointed. I took a friend for her birthday and initially the staff were lovely as usual, three of which I told it was her birthday after asking if there was any event on two separate occasions . However, service quickly deteriorated after my friend was brought the wrong dish. It took 5-10 minutes to bring her the correct meal, after which I had already finished mine as my pasta portion was significantly smaller than usual. We both just had to watch each other eat our meals while one of us had no plate in front of us, which was extremely awkward and looked very unusual. Two more staff members asked on separate occasions if we were waiting on anything, and to reply no just added to the awkwardness. Having finished our meals we asked for the bill, and they charged for the wrong dish my friend was incorrectly brought. We asked for this to be removed, and in all fairness it was. This would have left us with an overall ok experience, but then we asked to remove the service charge, for obvious reasons. And when the waiter asked why, I explained to him it was her birthday and we were very let down, especially in comparison to the many other times I'd been and loved it. He said 'oh, well you should have let us know' (offering a free desert) and I told him we did, three separate times. I was planning to book San Carlo for a large event I have coming up in a few weeks where 12 of us would have attended, so it is a big shame I have to change this lovely venue and food (with usually great staff), for elsewhere. Very disappointed.

Very good food was let down by poor service from grumpy staff. We came for a special occasion and encountered several issues. We waited 15 minutes to have our drinks order taken, and then the drinks took so long that they had to be remade for us. Our food order was taken by the maitre d', who was patronizing. One of our main dishes was missing when served, meaning one person had to wait 5 minutes without a single apology. When we asked to have the service charge removed due to the poor service, we had to wait an additional 5-10 minutes for the server to arrange this, again without any remorse. Overall, it was disappointing, and I would not recommend it at the price point of £50 per person.

A long established and popular restaurant on the popular Corn Street strip, this certainly has something of a bling factor to it and appears to be a bit of a celebrity hangout going on all the pictures on the walls. Although I did not study them, I did notice Tom Jones amongst them. The menu is very comprehensive and there should be something to suit all tastes, no matter what your preferences are. That said, the drinks choice was very disappointing, with nothing on tap and no beers at all, so I had to settle for a lager and even these were only available in small 330ml bottles. Service too seemed a little slow, we had chosen what we wanted for quite some time before anyone came back to take our order. I opted for the Ravioli all'Astice, ravioli filled with lobster and crab meat in a light creamy and pink peppercorn sauce. First impressions were that it was quite small, I think there were just three, or maybe four ravioli served up on an oblong plate. They were of course somewhat bigger than the usual ravioli that you might be used to, but even so, it seemed more like a starter than a main course. That said, it was certainly quite tasty and I enjoyed what there was of it. For desert I went for the Meringata alle Fragole, their “amazing” meringue cake with strawberries, although on this occasion the waiter advised that it was actually with maraschino cherries. I wasn’t too sure about this having been looking forward to some sort of Eton Mess type dish, but I needn’t have worried, the cherries were lovely and sweet and probably far nicer than strawberries would have been. The meringue cake too was very tasty, the meringue wasn’t really that obvious it was just crumbled up in amongst the other ingredients, but the overall result was certainly amazing as promised. Overall then, a bit of a mixed bag. A real buzzy atmosphere, friendly staff and tasty food, but slow service and small portions, at least for the main course, and a very poor drinks selection.

Table booked for a birthday meal. Waited around for someone to check booking and show us to our table. Person who took our order was bordering on rude when asked about certain dishes. We’re not made to feel welcome in any shape or form. Table was just under speaker and so we had to shout across to each other so we could talk. Food was overpriced for what it was. £5 for chips which tasted like fries from maccies. With so much salt on them they were barely edible! We all agreed we could have made better at home and would not return. Very disappointing birthday meal.

Food and wine were nice but there is a serious service/hospitality issue at San Carlo Bristol. Some of the service issues we had: - They got one of our mains wrong, and instead of rectifying this straight away our waiter first got the menu to prove he had given us the right dish (until the menu proved him wrong, awkward). - When our waiter took away the wrong dish, he also took away the cutlery but later ignored our request for new cutlery (which we shouldn’t have had to do in the first place) and then we had to get the attention of somebody else. - After receiving all our mains, we had to then chase for our side dishes. - Our waiter took another drinks order during our meal but the drinks never arrived and we had to ask somebody else. - The waiter who ‘served’ us a jug of water aggressively slammed it down on our table whilst walking past us at speed. - We were brought the wrong bill. - It took ages to get the attention of somebody to pay the bill, so much so we thought about getting up and pretending to leave. - When we asked for a new bill, they charged us for a Moretti we hadn’t had (or ordered). Overall impression - we were just annoying the waiters.

I was poorly after the ribeye steak, brought some home for my daughter and she was poorly after it too. The waiters were hovering and rushed us to get drinks when we had just stepped in... Would have preferred more of a smooth transition through meals and not to be ill after. Starter tempura prawns were small prawns wrapped in huge dough .. so was more soggy than anything. I did have some of my friend's chicken livers, that was delicious although her bread was burnt...Gin and tonic was quite nice and refreshing... Maybe it was a bad night as it was a recommendation, but I came out thinking...over priced glorified pub grub.... Not in a hurry to return...

Went here to celebrate a family birthday and based on reputation was looking forward to my first visit; it will sadly be my last. Firstly waited 20 minutes to order drinks, had to go and find a waiter to accomplish this. Then the wait for our starters and main courses was far too long. We had to send back 3 of the mains as they were cold and one of our party didn’t finish their “worst risotto they’ve ever had”. We ordered an additional garlic bread as the mains arrived being assured it would only take 5 minutes. 15 minutes later we had to ask a waiter where it was and then it promptly arrived, obviously left in the kitchen. Our mains were almost finished by then of course. The mains portions were also quite varied, some like the lasagne were generous but others like the Toscanini were more like a starter. When the bill arrived we had 2 random margaritas on there which we did not have so had to be removed. After the event we realised we had been charged for 2 glasses of wine that we had not ordered albeit the cheaper ones we asked for were not on the bill (sharp practice) and really should have challenged the 10% service charge but did not want to spoil the moment for the birthday relative. In all we were there for over 3 hours and whilst it’s nice not to rush it does reflect how long we waited to be served. Plenty of better value and more efficient service Italian restaurants in Bristol.

Booked a table for a special occasion having been here a year ago. First course, rare scallope with fish sharing dish which was definitely overpriced £35 for sharing our main meal veal which was wafer thin and cooked pan fried the main, was ordered wrong too! @ £48 each, wine was the Cantio Classico over £ 40 over priced too. Brandy had ice in… etc The guys in black Coates just wanted to get there bums on seats and not care about the Service to Customers and can we get you out of here as soon as possible for another customer… yes it’s a city restaurant but no repeat customers at this restaurant I’m sure? If so reply to this! Our meal cost over £180.00 for two people. I’ve sent the restaurant a heads up email! The reply was just a “ Corporate Message response “ I own a business and this is not a response I would receive or give to my customers. Never will I come to any Sans restaurant.

The atmosphere of the restaurant was lively and buzzy. However the food was really disappointing. Alll three of The starters we ordered were almost inedible the mozzarella was undercooked and bland the calamari was soggy bland and under cooked -we all left most of our starters and not a single server asked if anything was wrong or even how our meal was. My spaghetti bolognaise was tasty but again my daughters calezone was actually disgusting like cardboard bland and undercooked. My husbands pasta was passable but felt like a reheated meal you would pull together for kids at home - not good. I wouldn’t recommend or return I felt ripped off - the restaurant looks lovely but the food is very poor quality and not nice.

Easy to find and car parking is only few minutes walk. The decor and atomsphere is great. Food a bit disappointing, for the price charged the food and services could be a bit better. Lobster pasta could do without the shell and the wilted peas, the mixed grilled fish dish was a bit greasy and "wet", calarmi batter "flaked off" the squid, other than that, the Italian mixed bread basket, the olive Verde, pasta with chicken and prawns and the creamy fish dish and the wine was good. I was told by my party that the dessert were good too. I would have rate 4 out of 5 if it would have not for the head waiter took our order that struggle to smile, and a comie waiter snap at my son "do you want a job" when all my son did was handing the empty plate to him helpfully, we didn't say anything back to him but our mood was ruined then.

Firstly, I do have to say the food was nice no complaints about setting, wine or food. What does let the restaurant down somewhat is the front of house service. It’s not good, and the best way to describe is that the customers are looked down on, and talked down to. This was not just to us, but I couldn’t help but notice body language and mannerism towards other guests. This was a shame because a lot about the restaurant is good.

First time at San Carlo, and was using this venue to try my first ever lobster. It wasn't as I expected. I expected it to be soft like crab. However the pieces of lobster were hard and chewy. I have since discovered from talking to people that this was overcooked. Not what I would have expected from this venue and the price wasn't cheap. Had I known this was not how it was meant to be, I would have given it back to the kitchen.

I’m sure on its day, the food and service would be great. But unfortunately last night’s visit was poor. We were told to wait at the bar until our seat was available. We sat there for 20 minutes with no one asking us if we wanted a drink. Starter was ok, mains “tortellini pasta was far too thick & doughy! Crème Brûlée was too dense & cold. No glasses on our table for the water. And to top it off, I’ve had diarrhoea all last night and today.

This is the first restaurant that I have ever come accross that denies you entry if you just want to have a few drinks. You HAVE to have food for them to want to welcome you as a customer. Very dissapointing and surprising as the bill for only drinks often ends up adding up to more than the food!

Been coming here to this beautiful restaurant since it opened 30years ago. I come to Bristol often and it’s always been a must to visit San Carlo. We visited recently and was very disappointed with the food. We were there before 4pm so we had the three course for £27. The potions were very small and basic. Staters poor. I had salmon for mains it was a small potion of salmon with a few sprigs of broccoli. My friend had a small potion of chicken with a few skinny fries nothing else. Dessert nothing special and nothing to make it look special very poor. It’s such a shame I really don’t feel I want to waste my money there again. The staff were rather sullen and not especially welcoming. And to add insult to injury they add £15 service charge.

The food was exceptional, absolutely delicious!! Service was prompt and quick, and the atmosphere was divine!! The only thing that I felt put a downer on the experience was that the staff looked a little glum, not very many smiles except for one gentleman who was grinning the whole time we were there, the second thing, we were seating quite close to the service area so it was quite loud, staff tended to be shouting to one another, there was also what sounded like a doorbell going off average couple of seconds which drove me a bit insane. I also felt as though we had been pushed to the back of the restaurant, we weren't exactly dressed up for the occasion, but we also noticed we'd been seated next to another couple of a similar age to us so I'm not quite sure what that might've been about I could have the complete wrong end of the stick. Overall, though, delicious food, stunning drinks, choices, brilliant atmosphere, just a couple of things to improve on.

One of the best Italian restaurants I've ever been to. A proper Italian food. Welcoming staff and great service. I really enjoyed the startes which were prawns and lobsters. The first time I tried lobsters and I loved it. Great pastas, I enjoyed the penne pasta with chicken and baby prawns. Really tasty and fresh. The food quality was absolutely fantastic. Nice cocktails they do as well.

Spotted this restaurant whilst walking by having arrived in Bristol this evening..menu looked delicious and another guy standing outside said it was his favourite place so we booked a table. The food was delicious, but it was very unwelcoming, couple of the staff were verging on making us feel like they would rather we weren't there. Edit..the customer relations team contacted me to ask for more details following this review. Their response was quick, interested and apologetic. On this basis (and the fact that my scallops were perfect) I think I'll put the poor welcome down to a one off and will try it again.

Overall was a disappointing experience. The food was not up to the usual high standards and the male waiters seemed aloof, not welcoming and almost rude. The younger waitresses were doing their best. We visited on a busy Sunday, had to wait for our table and then a lengthy wait for our food. The waiter missed off one of our main courses, so when this arrived ( pizza) it seemed under cooked and pale and floppy. My spaghetti main course was not hot enough. The only thing they seem concerned about is if you want to constantly order more drinks. They did not ask us how the food was at all. I had to ask 3 times for the tap water to come to the table. Not a pleasant experience for the price and will be voting with my feet and not returning.

Not sure how to review this place because the whole experience was just bizarre. The food was nice, only just justifiable for how much they charge, and the decor is lovely, but everything else was just so off. As soon as we arrived the guy at the door was pretty blunt when greeting us, asking us to wait at the bar before being seated even though we showed up at the time of our reservation. When we were seated, a different guy (who was lovely) took our wine order, and another different guy brought it over. The wine wasn’t the one we ordered, but whatever, it was fine. The table next to us had received their mains, eaten their mains, had them taken away, looked at the dessert menu, asked for the bill, used the toilet, and paid the bill before our food order was taken. The same guy who directed us to the bar came over and treated us like we were a burden, not looking at us once and answering the one question I asked about the ingredients of a dish with a blunt ‘no’. He held his hand out for us to hand the menus back whilst he looked elsewhere, and he dropped both menus on the table, almost knocking over our drinks. Only then did he smile and apologise, because he was embarrassed. The whole time we were there, staff were raising their voices and shouting at each other in Italian. Maybe if we weren’t right next to the service station this wouldn’t be a problem, but it felt really unprofessional and distracting, especially for an upmarket restaurant. There also seemed to be about 15 front of house staff members on shift who ended up just getting in the way of people trying to get through the restaurant, constantly squeezing in between already tight tables to make space. Later on the guy came back to clear our plates, to which I asked if he could box up the rest of our food to take home. He just stared at me like he was bored, picked up my plate and walked off. Someone else brought the box over a bit later. When we got the bill, our payment was taken by yet another staff member, and by the time we left we’d dealt with about 6 different people, so no sense of personal service. I understand that everyone has their own role/function, but why do you need one person to serve food and a different person to sprinkle Parmesan? And why am I paying a 10% service charge for such terrible service?

Claudia who introduced herself and advised our table was ready was absolutely first class so professional. The staff on the floor were all very attentive even though the place was packed. Very good quality food. Poor service, courses took a long time to come and simple things such as water took even longer. Waiter seemed disinterested like he couldn't care less about us. Additionally, the constant interruptions of happy birthdays echoing around the restaurant was just annoying.
