The food was good We had scampi n chips. Both were lovely. Nice mug of tea. What more could you want.

So, where do I start? Firstly, the food was unbelievably undercooked. The sausages and the rest of the meat on the breakfast just tasted strange in general and not at all how it should. I suggest if you want to waste your money, you come here. Everything is cheap and they rip you off by making you overpay for it. The best thing was the coffee and it was instant coffee. If you want a “posh” coffee it’s an extra pound alongside your undercooked food. Highly recommend a change of kitchen staff.

Not had a fry up for years ,came in last week for the first time ,the food was fantastic, I will be back

Why is the drivers' toilet closed at night? You can't stay here for free, so I guess some sanitary conditions should be provided.

This establishment has gone down hill. I went in around 2 weeks ago and the atmosphere was atrocious and customer service was terrible. I had walked in to 2 staff members behind the till staring silently, didn't even say hello or show any remote intrest on being there. They just pointed to the menu behind them not saying a word which had about 6 choices and again just stared in complete silence. The atmosphere was like a Ghost town, left over plates on tables, completely silent with no one in the kitchen and a single person sitting on a table. Bassicly an empty room. It use to be a great place but with new owners taken over who probably won't be there much longer. I had only stayed in for a few minutes and then left because it felt extremely uncomfortable.

Went in for a bit of breakfast, great food,very fair prices,generous portions and quickly served. Lovely staff and great atmosphere,if I'm lucky enough to be in their area wouldn't hesitate to come back .Met John the owner who was very accommodating and such a nice guy.Good luck ,thankyou and best wishes-Paul "The Cone Guy"😄

Stopped overnight. .. options of parking payment with £2.50/£5.00 food voucher . quiet .. felt relatively safe though not secure ..certainly better than the A50 lay-bys ! .. Braised steak dinner excellent.. staff friendly.. definitely stop again Thank you 😎👌🏼

What a dreadful place this has become. Used to be a great stop for a good breakfast. Now appears to have been taken over by people who are all about the bottom line...at the cost of customers. Unwelcoming atmosphere...cold...and my god its dismal. Bloody freezing so you need a coat inside! Dont expext gourmet but for the prices its basic as basic can be. Putting cost above quality here! Large breakfast had bacon that was hard and stale couldnt even cut it. Sausages? If you can call them that legally strange pale colour and texture lukewarm and rubbery..Why?! Food was cold as was the plate. Cutlery dirty. Sauces cheap as cheap can be. Coffee come on do it properly its not hard to have a pot of coffee. Tea well that was like warm milk..a tea bag in a mug that they decided was how you wanted it. They dont even let you add your own sugar. For nearly £20 for 2 meals you would be better off going to maccys. I think the new owners have money on their minds so drop the quality lose the customers and lets sell the land to developers!! Oh yes thats what they are doing isnt it!

Went this morning 2/3/2024 been going to the salt box for years I’m from derby my dad bless him went there as a lorry driver it was the worst breakfast I’ve ever had totally letdown it was horrible stay away 😏😏😏😏😏😔😔😔🇬🇧

I stopped here with my mum and dad for 3 cobs we had bacon sausage cobs they where the Cheapest meat it was dripping of oil. They was horrible never again will we go again my dad is a hgv driver and will be passing this on to other truckers worst £19 iv ever spent.

It used to be a must go cafe, but it is now terrible. The breakfast was horrible cheap produce cooked badly. One to avoid.

Delightful food and a very friendly atmosphere and friendly staff and plenty of parking. Highly recommend this cafe for good food.

The Salt Box Cafe is situated in Hatton on the Derby Road, just on the border of Foston. It has the air of a transport cafe, and is none the worse for it. It has a very old school feel. You can get a very good full English breakfast here, or quite simply a very cheap, but very nice, cup of tea, which is what I did on this occasion. I have been multiple times now, and I hope to go a few more. I have had many different items here in the past, and it hadn't disappointed. The staff all seem nice and the place is clean. One thing to be aware of though - you do need to input your vehicle registration on the counter-top tablet when you arrive. This is free to do and will ensure you don't get yourself a parking ticket. I assume the place is rigged up with ANPR cameras or something.

Highly recommended, very clean, organised, polite & food delicious, generous portions, will call again for sure!

Stopped hear paid for truck parking to find customer service terrible I asked for nan bread and the girl laughed at me rude, furthermore I wanted a shower the girl opened up for me I paid for the tokens to then find the showers dont work. I then sat down to eat a cold chicken curry and burnt chips I travel the country for my job as a hgv driver/ Tramper this is the worst of any truck stops I have ever stopped at never again im still annoyed of the total disregard for customer service terrible. Not at all happy so I had no food and no shower at what is supposed to be a truck stop I will be lodging my concerns to the relevant organisations

Food poor not worth the money but it's OK if you are just stopping for a drink definitely won't be going again

Parked up here in Hgv , had a beef dinner and a shower , very polite staff , food was well priced and just what I needed after driving , food was spot on , definitely be back , shame there isn’t more places like this dotted around uk

A legend in the cafe world around Derbyshire. In the 20 years I've been going in when I'm in the area, I've never had a bad meal or service . This place deserves heritage status.

My son and his girlfriend went here a few weeks ago, only just got around to posting this. We are local, so they walked there. We have been here several times over the years. Was always great for a "unhealthy" meal. Loads of hot, well cooked food. Not any more. They had to leave their food and walk out. It was very badly cooked, cold and his girlfriend felt sick. And as for the staff, they obvious didn't care, everything was a massive inconvenience. With so many other nice cafes just up the road in Tutbury, there is no need to go here, ever.

This was a great find en route to the peak District! Be sure to put your reg in at the counter so you don't get a fine. Food was good with nice portions. Service is at the counter only. Lots of parking and a truck back too with car and truck wash facilities! Well worth popping by! Enjoy.

Food was ok,not great Place was nice and clean but lady taking orders was very abrupt,she may have been having a bad day but without customers she wouldn't have a job,would have been nice to be told about the parking,another customer warned us to enter our reg or we would get fined

Staff were busy, not enough of them. Food took ages but was nice once received. They also have a ANPR car park which I hate.

Rang up to ask if there is any truck parking availability to which I was told yes. So arrived an hour later to be told food is not being served past 1900 but they can do me sausage and chips to takeaway which I said no thank you ill go to the Indian across the road. Asked about showers and they're not working.. and I can't seem to find a toilet. Overall bang average

It's OK, friendly enough, wasn't a great choice on food and quality wasn't amazing. Shower block and toilets really let this place down, just old and run down.

Not that impressed if I'm honest. Bacon was flavourless, chips were overcooked and even the brown sauce had no flavour. Sorry guys but won't be back....

Attended for breakfast. Parking is very spacious, ideal for HGV and Artic lorries. Keypad entry for free parking at the counter is a must and is HEAVILY promoted throughout the cafe, a nice touch and shows they care about their patrons. Upon entering the cafe was empty, 11am, I was slightly sceptical about this, however a steady stream followed me in, and 11-13 tables full by the time I left. Friendly counter staff, Apple Pay accepted. I opted for the MIDI breakfast, £6.50. 2 sausages, 3 bacon, - fried egg. tinned tomatoes, beans, fried slice. Sausages were tasty, bacon very greasy. Lots of tomatoes and beans, one piece of toast though, would’ve expected two for the price. I think it was missing mushrooms personally. Overall slightly more expensive than your average ‘greasy spoon’ but I assume that’s down to the locale and lack of competition in the area. Toilets also available, something needed around here as the lack of public conveniences is abundant.

Many years since I visited. Not as busy as it used to be, but nice and clean, good wholesome food at reasonable prices. Recommend if you are in the area, plenty of parking.

Always fresh cooked food at a reasonable price. Good honest food never a bad meal great staff well worth a visit. The Lasagne is a personal favourite give it a try.

Have been there a handful of times in the past (over the last 10 to 15 years). On this occasion, found the fixed seating to be troublesome as we are "big boned" ☺️. The service was very slow which was very odd as it was only around 5% full.. But we're informed eventually that there was a problem with the fryer.. Food quality was average. Due to the fixed-seating set up, will give this a pass in future..

Bulldoze it and put a McDonalds there. Cheaper and quicker. It literally is a waste of space.

Excellent and great value traditional cafe. Full English perfect. Watch out for the parking which is now 45 mins free. If you need more than there is a pad at the counter to put your reg in. Personally shame when they do this.

The food was ok but the service was shocking. Made to wait over 25 mins for two take away breakfast roles. The person on the till wasn’t competent enough to tell the kitchen my order so I was just left sitting there whilst other people received their food. I appreciate this isn’t fine dinning but the attitude and professionalism of the staff leaves a lot to be desired - the one woman in particular was moaning that she regretted returning to work

Egg n Bacon Barm and a latte Thought it was tastiest bacon 🥓 like eveerrrrrr. Families of three / four generations dining in together , young couples in love, elderly gentlemen enjoying the meal deal on offer which includes strawberry crumble and custard 🤩 Place has a calm and clean ambience. It’s really clean and light for a truck stop 😆 excellent just what I needed on my long journey . Highly recommended 👍

Good place for a breakfast stop when travelling down the A50 as it's not that far off the route. The food is made to order so you can have a wait if the place is busy, which is normally not too long. The food is well presented and well done, would definitely recommend this clean & tidy cafe.

Since having new owners it’s not as good as it used to be. Had a traditional breakfast. Then when it arrived a lot of beans to fill the plate. Asked where the toast was and got charged for the toast. Will not return

Staff could be trained in customer engagement, they were bordering on being rude. Food was very poor. The shower was disgusting. Do not park overnight here, unless you are desperate and running short of hours. It was given 1 star because a 0 wasn't available.

Eat outside due to having puppy with us. Very nice enjoyable English breakfast.

Used to call in on way to Stafford Bike Shows, last time called,breakfast wasn't very hot and plate cold. Not as good since the take over some years ago. Disappointing now.

Little gem of a place for overnight wagon parking. Shower / toilet facilities were a let down though, very dirty and mouldy.

It's probably 25 years since I last stopped here, much has changed for the better I may add 👍🏼. Bigger, brighter and spotlessly clean. Good food and friendly service. 4 ⭐ only cause early closing (7pm) and no night toilet facilities. Other than that I'd use again 👍🏼👍🏼

Always excellent food, friendly staff been calling in here for over 30 years. Never drive past this little gem even if its just for a cuppa. Unfortunately I don't get to pass very often but would highly recommend it to everyone

A tad on the pricey side but it's good food. You will need to input your vehicle reg at the food counter. I belive this applies to all customers.

Haven't been here in 20 years or so, it's been decorated but otherwise its the same as always, sadly too few of these café around these days. Plenty of parking but make sure you register you vehicle at the till as carpark now managed.

Just off the A50 good wee cafe on the corner by the lights. Cafe has been there for years. When you arrive book in the cafe for parking even though you might be on a 45min break. Food OK coffee good cafe clean and tidy facilities are OK. Staff very friendly and helpful bit expensive covid aware

Food was vile everything dripping in oil, big place lots of tables so sat at 1 and went to pick the menu up and there wasn't 1 so looked to borrow 1 of an other table and there wasn't 1 so went to go see the lady behind the counter and she said that we had to go to her to put an order in we were stuck behind other people who were looking at the board to see what they wanted to order. I ordered 2 full English breakfast I didn't eat 1 bite of that it was thick with cooking oil vile.

Unfortunately since there long term cook retired the Salt Box is NOT the same the menu boards on the wall have gone now it,s a tv screen that shows only whats available at a particular time in my case the breakfast menu prior to 12.00 so you have to ask if the Full menu is available which apparently it is NOT GOOD from my point of view Also the parking issue was a complete surprise for me, from my point of view I WAS told about the new system at the counter and so entered my hgv reg to be in compliance and not get fined .I was told at the time that the cut off time was 45 mins because thats the break time for hgv drivers which is true But the normal FREE PARKING Times across the U/K at motorway services and roadside cafe,s is usually 2 Hours I dont know if they have been having issues with workers from the next door Housing building site or not But maybe As for what I ordered I was Happy with what turned up and I,m Still willing to give the Salt Box my Thumbs Up even though I do not like the tv menu thing or the parking thing The Food is STILL GOOD If the retired chef reads this PLEASE come back JUST to train up a new chef and show him/her whats required to maintain the cafe,s reputation

All I can say is "disappointing". Paid parking £15 restaurant closed when I arrived,but I knew this from a colleague. Toilets unsavery to say the least. Built-in on 2 sides by houses. No doubt if will close down soon. Now I have been inside ! It's awful for large people like myself. The tables are designed for small thin people ! Not large chubby ones like me . I had to go to the bit at the end where there were a few loose chairs luckily.
