we'd walked past several times from the car park to the city centre and this time thought we'd try it for lunch. There's a courtyard out back for nice days and we enjoyed simple toasties and coffee. It was quite busy but the service was Ok and friendly enough. Perfectly fine.

Arrived at 1ish to find the cafe not that busy. Told that the burgers were unavailable which cut the choice down by about a quarter. Food took a long time to arrive and was distinctly average. Not impressed to be honest.

Best secret garden in Canterbury. Absolutely delicious food at reasonable price. Such efficient staff and friendly owner. Wil be going again and again.

Visited Saffron Cafe on a day out to Canterbury. Me and my partner thoroughly enjoyed 2 big breakfasts which was definitely good farm produce with the most perfectly cooked dippable fried eggs and 2 coffees BUT however we nearly fell out the door gasping for air when he slapped us with a £30 bill after charging us to change an item on the breakfast on the way out. I wouldn't recommend on a budget but I would recommend the breakfast itself I can't be honest than that.

We had lunch at this café about a week ago. Everything was perfect - good food, served promptly and by very pleasant staff. My poached egg on toast well done to perfection and my partners Panini was delicious. It was good value too - I would definitely go again.

As it was advertised as dog friendy; we walked in only to be berated by a very agitated owner who pushed us outside. I do mean pushed, I'm disabled and use a rollator. My partner who was trying to help me was told loudly to move. All very dramatic It was if we'd brought the plague in. The food was average. He realised his mistake and tried to overcompensate. Another worker hustled us through as well but was very apologetic later. Cannot recommend.

We found this little café by chance and decided to stop for lunch. It’s tucked away on a little street just a 5-minute walk from the city centre. Despite being a Saturday afternoon in high season we easily got a table. The waiting staff were friendly, polite and efficient. Nothing was too much trouble. They serve a choice of breakfasts (all day), wraps, salads, burgers, panini and main dishes. So it’s perfect for breakfast, brunch and lunch. We both had The Big Breakfast and a pot of tea for two. Our food arrived freshly prepared and piping hot. The ingredients are clearly of good quality and it was truly delicious. Without hesitation the waiter topped up the teapot with hot water to give us a second cuppa each, and also replenish the milk. It was simply perfect: a little gem of a café set away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. And it was good value too. Highly recommended!

The large breakfast was pretty good but the bacon had no flavour, and a lot of fat on it. I did ask for a pot of tea during the food but never got it. A lot of trouble with WiFi, with multiple tries st inputting different codes. Apparently they were changing router very recently. Staff atleast helpful and polite. May return.

Tucked away in a narrow back street but close to the city centre with train station and car park nearby. A lovely cafe for breakfast or lunch, with simple food at very reasonable prices. Friendly staff, excellent service. Menu includes simple food with a choice of sandwiches, baguettes, pasta, salad, fries etc. Courtyard at the back.

We sat in the pretty courtyard at the back, and were served by a very friendly lady. We only wanted baguettes but these were tasty and plentiful.

So good we visited twice in the same day one for morning coffee and cake and again for lunch. Happy friendly welcoming staff fresh food served with a smile and reasonably priced. Recommend

This is more of a general comment than a review; the saffron café used to be my go to place, and then Covid happened. Because I am extremely vulnerable, I have to now find places where I can basically sit outside. Most Cafes have now branched out to include outside seating for this purpose. The saffron café already had a lovely garden, but the past two times I have phoned up, they have told me that the garden is closed. I don’t mind it being cold or even a bit wet, I would rather sit outside than take the risk of sitting inside. It is a real shame that they don’t allow people to sit outside in all weathers, given the current situation. I have had to find somewhere else to go, which is a real shame.

First visit today with elderly Mum. Often walked past and seen ads and thought it looks nice. Extremely clean, spacious and friendly staff. Loved the little garden area at the back - lovely in city centre to find this. Menu a little pricey for a cafe but food delicious and well presented. Serve all day breakfast - I had vegetarian and it was lovely.

Lunch for three, two of us had paninis, one had the daily special which was sirloin steak pizzaiola. All meals really tasty and good value. Restaurant felt very Covid secure (sanitiser on arrival, QR code, good distance between tables). Helpful staff, would definitely recommend.

Met a friend for a walk in Canterbury today and checked out the options for a takeaway snack and drink. Saffron seemed the best option and the sausage or bacon baguette with a tea of coffee for £4.95 was a good choice. Large crusty baguette with a good amount of well seasoned sausage inside - choice of ketchup or HP sauce - served on a paper plate with a serviette and wrapped in a paper bag. We took them to eat in Dane John Gardens. My friend commented on the quality of the coffee and the excellent sausage. We'll definitely go back for another, or try one of the other options on the menu.

Went for breakfast with my partner and baby and staff were very friendly. Had high chair for baby. I had avacado and poached egg on toast and partner had a full English, both happy with our food.

Absolutely loved it here! We had a falafel wrap in the garden. The garden was beautiful, the wrap was delicious and the service was fabulous.

Ate here twice on a short visit to Canturbury (July 2020) and they are open for dining inside. The location is clean, friendly with a nice straightforward cafe menu.

I've had their food via Deliveroo and it was of a great quality - probably the best quality English breakfast I've had. Definitely recommend.

Had lunch here on 2 occasions while staying in Canterbury. The ciabatta & baguette were excellent & well filled. Staff were cheerful & helpful. Will eat there next time we are in Canterbury.

Located about five minutes from the City centre the Saffron cafe offers a good choice of snacks and menu of more substantial dishes. Staff are welcoming and the cafe is kept very clean. Choice of food is there to suit all tastes and there is not too long to wait for your meal.

I went to the Saffron Cafe to meet some old friends for lunch. I had never been there before. We ate in the garden under grape vines, which was very pleasant. The service was friendly and efficient and the food was good. The menu is limited—as one might expect from the designation ‘cafe’, but still offered variety—sandwiches, burgers, panini and some other hot dishes and pasta. I had the Chicken Shawarma, which wasn’t remarkable, but for the price was good. I have seen some other reviews that weren’t very flattering, so I wondered whether I had visited the same restaurant. All I can think is that everyone and every restaurant can have an off day. I can only say that what I experienced would bring me back again.

Why this place has high rank!? First time I have been fooled by TripAdvisor reviews. This place is horrible! They made a mistake on my order and the avocado toast I ordered was disgusting, the portion of avocado is tiny and they charge you 6.95£ for that! Look my picture and tell if the plate worth £6.95

Visited for the 1st time some months ago with friends who sadly decided and suggested we meet here again for a Saturday morning breakfast.

We stopped as we had just parked up and we’re looking for a nice cafe for breakfast... having been staying at a four star country hotel nearby where the breakfast was very average the previous day!

We stumbled upon the cafe whilst wandering around Canterbury and decided to have breakfast there. The breakfasts and coffee were very good well priced and served in very good time, service was attentive and the surroundings were lovely where we sat in the courtyard. Great vibe, recommended and would return if nearby again.

El personal era muy amable. El pastel de naranja y almendras fue absolutamente delicioso y volveremos de nuevo solo por eso! El Latte era excelente y tenían alternativas a los productos lácteos, que siempre es una ventaja. Tenemos la intención de volver para el almuerzo ya que el menú tenía mucho que ofrecer. Este es un tesoro escondido con una gran cantidad de cómodos asientos al aire libre y amplias mesas en el interior, ¡podría convertirse en nuestro lugar favorito en Canterbury! !

Nos encanta la cafetería Saffron en Castle Street. El personal es paciente y comprensivo con nosotros, así como inteligente y educado. The staff go to great lengths to be pleasant and offer very well prepared food. If I was being very picky, I would say that the owner seems to be very happy to see most customers- welcoming them with a handshake and a smile. Yet I've been visiting for years and he just looks through me. The other week I asked for a glass of tap water as I had some sharp ciabatta stuck in my throat and needed something to wash it down. The manager said yes, and then forgot about it. Just as well I wasn't choking! The other staff are lovely. Also I booked a table using their website and never got a reply. They need to check their mail and get a bit more active on social media in my opinion.

A great breakfast and coffee, enjoyed in the sun on the outside terrace. Great food and service, we will be back.

I love this little café - gets mega busy over lunch for a very good reason! Gorgeous food, always a winner. Sweet little courtyard garden out the back with visiting sparrows who hop around happily and chatter as you eat.

My wife and i own a restaurant in Herne Bay but on our day off like to visit other places.We have been to Saffron several times over the years and have visited three times recently. We are glad to say that the food is just as good as it alwsys was, the staff attentive and polite and will certainly visit again .

Yummy food with very friendly staff. It's a little off the main shopping high street but I think it's worth it. Would recommend for a quick bite to eat for families.

Looking for somewhere to eat on our way out for a morning walk. There are plenty of avocado on toast for a tenner type places in Canterbury but a full English was required, and this place fit the bill perfectly! I had the standard breakfast @ £5.95 and husband went for the large, and we were both very happy with the quality, especially the fat butchers sausages. Great value for money and prompt service.

The Saffron Cafe is clearly popular with the locals for lunch but at 1145 we just wanted Coffee but they served us quickly and cost was very reasonable.

Great lunch, I had a delicious ham and cheese omelette, the hungry eleven your old enjoyed his sausage sandwich and chips. No complaints except he was full up! Try it for a relaxed lunch away from the hustle of the main shopping area, just a five minute walk.

We were attracted by the exterior of this family run cafe when we passed by yesterday and returned for lunch today. We were not disappointed, excellent crepes and Turkish tea, together with a warm welcome and a very good ambience. Seating is both inside and in the rear garden under the vines. Well worth making the short walk from the City centre.

My husband and I had a vegetarian breakfast here on a day out in Canterbury; Saffron Cafe staff were friendly and welcoming and it had the feel of a family- run place. We enjoyed our veggie breakfast!

Only a quick visit here but staff were helpful and friendly, and outdoor seating in small walled garden shaded by old grape vines was very pleasant on a warm day.

The trouble with eating out in Canterbury is that with so many tourist visitors and a large student population, cafes and restaurants don't have to try very hard to attract custom. This means they can constantly provide average, relatively unexciting food knowing they will never be short on custom. There are signs this might be about to change because the city has become flooded in recent years with eating houses and saturation point may well have been reached. However, for the time being mediocrity is the norm and Saffron cafe is no exception. This is a pity because the staff are friendly and the cafe ambience reasonably pleasant. The food, though, lacks imagination. A recent lunch of a cajun chicken burger in an unappetising bun with packet fries was edible - just - but decent bread, home made chips and better quality chicken would have elevated the meal and the cafe well above the average. In fact, breakfasts here are a better bet though again the bread is about as bad as it gets but that's what happens if you buy the mass produced Chorleywood product rather than finding an artisan baker. Saffron cafe is in good company; with just about every other cafe and restaurant in Canterbury which, sadly, doesn't say much.

Can always be relied on for a delicious filling English breakfast.

Having driven from Rye we were very thirsty and could do with a cup of tea. The establishment is dog friendly but only in the courtyard so we had to carry our biggish Springer through the restaurant ensuing hilarity from some of the diners. The tea and tea cake was very tasty and the younger staff were very helpful.

Went to the saffron cafe for the first time ever today, the breakfast was absolutely amazing and reasonably priced too, the coffee was one of the best I’ve ever had. Will definitely be returning!

From the outside the Saffron didn't seem all that appealing. But because there was a varied competitively priced menu with both eat in and takeaway prices, we decided to go in. The inside area appears clean and we got a nice welcome. We then saw the very pleasant courtyard and decided to sit there as it was a nice warm sunny day. A waiter quickly brought us a menu, the food we ordered was served quickly and seemed to be fresh. The service was friendly and good.

Instead of adding a shot of espresso on top of boiling water, my americano was made with the shots and then just running the water again. It’s just disgusting, really bad burned flavour. Staff also seems a bit tense, nervous, but really helpful and nice.

We often visit for breakfast before shopping. Quick service with extremely decent food. Never too crowded with a nice atmosphere. Simplistic menu, will always allow you to edit things. Unfortunately the toilets are difficult for access. Very nice place, would recommend for a quick lunch or breakfast!

My friend and l were in Canterbury for a few days and we found this little cafe by chance. For two days running we ate the most delicious poached eggs on toast. This dish is so difficult to get right...firm white and runny yolk. Well these were the best l have ever eaten....fantastic local free range eggs and cooked to perfection. Wish l was here longer to eat my way ghrough the rest of the menu. Staff polite, friendly and listened to their customers . A real gem.

My wife and I were walking around Canterbury and liked the look of this café from the outside. Went inside and then out the back to a nice secluded garden covered over in a large grapevine. Eight or nine tables, nearly all occupied, but we got a space!Both ordered a latte, my wife had a salad and I went for the double cheeseburger. Both meals were £9.95 and my two seven ounce burgers, chips and salad were a plate-full.The food was excellent - tasty, fresh and very satisfying. The weather helped, sunny warm and relaxing. Nice ambience.The staff were attentive, knowledgeable and a good sense of humour (caught me with a grape in my hand and threatened (jokingly) to charge me. All in all, a pleasant experience and one we will repeat.

Dived in here as I'd started my morning very early and needed some proper food. Chose the Bergers Eggs, poached eggs on a bed of roasted spiced vegetables. They came in a tagine and were sizzling nicely. The tea had also been left to brew so was a nice colour, come here if you like strong tea! Staff were very friendly, nothing was too much trouble. We sat out in the garden as it was sunny, the perfect sun trap. Really enjoyed this little break in the day and would go back all the time if I were closer!

I love the Saffron Cafe and have been visiting for many years. Just a bit of feedback for them; recently I have noticed the noise level from the staff really increase. When I visit I like to either do a bit of work, writing or see a friend. It used to be quite peaceful but lately I've noticed that the staff behind the counter REALLY slam the jug on the counter over and over again- I appreciate this is part of making coffee, but how about banging it onto a folded up tea towel? It makes my ears really hurt. I have also noticed staff throwing cutlery into a container when drying it/sorting it. It makes such a clash when it lands. Also sometimes the music stops and nobody turns it back on, so the atmosphere dissolves, and all you can hear is the banging and clattering. I would really appreciate it if the staff tried to be a bit quieter, and saw things from the customers' perspective. We are there to chill out, to relax, to have a quiet meal. I have had to put ear plugs in the last few times I've visited. I really want to keep coming to the cafe, and would be so grateful if the staff could take this on board. Cafes are noisy places, yes, but this one is small and noise travels on the hard surfaces. A lot of the noise can be reduced just by taking more care.

Really good value lunches and delicious cakes - slightly off the beaten track but worth visiting - they have a lovely garden to sit in too and the staff are very helpful.
