Food always delicious but service usually rude and if collecting take away always total it up before you arrive- I have never not been overcharged, though they do reduce it when I ask them to total it up again there in front of me. The owner is also very pushy that you pay in cash and not on card... we wouldn’t go back except that the food is so nice!

After a nice meal last week we decided to reorder. This time, we waited 2 hours, then when we phoned, were told another 15 minutes. The bag was hot. Sadly, that was the best thing about it. Inside, defied description. Having obviously forgotten about us, they threw some microwave frozen chips into a watery sauce, but the chips weren’t actually cooked through, gave us some prawn dish instead of our ordered starter(onion Bhahji),and the chicken tikka masala was watery and really awful. I’m allergic to seafood, so specifically ordered vegetarian. When we called, the staff were aggressive, hostile and really unhelpful. They offered 50% off our next order, shouted at us as if it was our fault, then hung up. The experience was unpleasant- in my opinion, avoid.

Walked in with my partner nowhere near closing time, a staff member walked up to us no hello or welcome, when i asked for a takeaway the man said in a grumpy voice what now ? i should have walked out straight away, however i was hungry and stayed. when the food was brought to us nothing was said not even thank you or goodby, the food was ok apart from having too much tomato in it, Because of the rude service i wont be going back, no wonder the place was empty, you should get shot of this person and get staff with customer service skills.

We've eaten in the restaurant just the one: the eating space is quite large, but the lighting is really poor. We all enjoyed what we ate - and we had several meals from them while they were on their introductory 25% discount period. We ordered a take-away once through one of those third party delivery companies. Not only did they take no notice of our special requirements clearly stated on the order, but after an hour it still hadn't turned up, and the restaurant had to send a member of staff over to us to deliver it in the end. Needless to say it wasn't hot. That said, their chicken dhansak is delicious - and the only place that when you say 'really mild' that's how they give it to you. We will eat there again, I'm sure.

Went to the Saffron last night with a few friends. The good was absolutely delicious. I honestly don't know why the restaurant never gets busy as the food is far superior to other local Indian restaurants. We had lots of beer and a bottle of wine for a reasonable price. Food is very nice but for the price it is what I would expect. However, I am completely outraged by the delivery service. Whilst awaiting delivery of food I had ordered I took a call from their delivery driver who was having difficulties finding my house. When I enquired where he was he could only comment that he was in a country road somewhere and made vague references to a bridge. I named a well known landmark in the area and a nearby main road in the hope that this might be of some help which unfortunately it was not. We have had a delivery from this restaurant before with no delivery problems but this was clearly a different driver. I found myself being accused of not being very helpful - an accusation I found deeply offensive. I gave the phone to my husband in order for him to continue the conversation with the driver whilst I phoned the restaurant to complain about the driver’s conduct. I did receive an apology and the food did arrive shortly after . However, given the delay in getting it to us it was slightly cold and therefore not as enjoyable as it might have been.

I ordered a take-away from Saffron using Deliveroo. After having waited for 1h30 I decided to contact the restaurant to find out what was happening. I spoke to someone who was ever so rude to me on the phone. This person confirmed Saffron had received my order but also said in the same breath that it was not their problem that my order was not there yet...there was no apology whatsoever and the tone of voice was abrupt. Whilst I understand that sometimes things can go wrong, what matters is how you handle it. From a customer service point of view, Saffron is scoring very low - hence the 1 star.

The new setup has a fresh decor and much thought has been put into the simple but 'nothing is too much trouble' service. The waiters are prepared to discuss dishes with you and we have been delighted with the quality of the food and the good-sized portions. A special mention must be made of the Cobra beer which is a perfect pint, possibly the best lager in Orpington! The coffee is also good. Don't hesitate to give Saffron a try and prices are currently 25% off - really good value!

TL;DR: Great restaurant fixed everything better than it ever was. Go now while you can still get a table!Well, to be completely honest, we'd given up on the Saffron. To be honest, it was ok, then passable, then shockingly bad. We then gave up. After boycotting for nearly a year, (there are so many great curry houses around after all - Cardamom, Petts wood for instance) that we thought that we were better off elsewhere. We than heard of a re-launch, so thought we'd try once more. How happy we were to discover that the new owner (it had lost it's license and shut down for a short time apparently) really cares about customer service (missing from previous owners) and the quality of the food he puts out.I cannot enthuse enough about the turn around in quality of the food.. Mohammed, (The manager) has worked in many great local curry houses (Bombay, Indigo, Banana leaf) in the past, and is a well accomplished chef in his own right. He's also a vey attentive and very affable character - One you actually enjoy spending an evening with.He knows the menu well, and also learns the things you like (not just dishes, but more the style of food you would appreciate - he will often suggest similar, but very different dishes once he has seen what you normally would order)Having been back three times in as many weeks, literally everything we've had has been everything we'd hoped for. Not greasy, really tasty and generously (yet also both subtly and cleverly) spiced. I cannot fault it, try as I may.I now have four 'favourite' curry houses that I'd travel to, and the Saffron is definitely towards the top.Chai Naasto (.totally different )The Saffron tied with Amber Fort (Wonderful food, traditional)Cardamom.I'm genuinely surprised to find myself writing this review, but the turn around is nothing short of miraculous, and I wish Mohammed and his team nothing but the best for the future. To sum up: Saffron is definitely a curry house to rediscover.

We can now enjoy the Saffron again, and its marvellous! We stopped going to the Saffron about 18 to 20 months ago after having a succession of poor meals coupled with really strange service!! It was a shame as we only live up the road but we found other much better restaurants and went there instead (it wasn't hard to find better at the time). We completely missed the restaurant losing its alcohol license at some point in the time we didn't go, and missed it eventually closing down but didn't miss the poor food and the sad service. When we saw that it was opening again it was a hard decision to make as we had previously been so disappointed by the fall from grace, but after some discussion and a few beers gave in to curiosity! We had a very good meal there a few days after it reopened; the restaurant has been renovated although (and the manager agrees) there is still a bit more to do such as the toilets. The staff and manager were really friendly and welcoming, the revised menu is currently discounted but provides some excellent choices as well as the odd typo but that is all part of the charm! There is a great selection even though the menu looks cut down there is everything you want -just because you can't see it on the menu doesn't mean the skilful chefs can't cook it for you!So now a couple of weeks after the restaurant opening again and we have been there three times and had consistently great food served with enthusiasm and a desire to see you enjoy everything they serve! I can thoroughly recommend everything that we have tried off the menu. Of particular note is the king prawn puri starter and the Saffron Chicken main but this doesn't mean other dishes we have had were not equally great! The staff are friendly and helpful and have it just right. Special mention to Mohammad who is so knowledgeable about all the food they are serving and will offer good recommendations which are spot on. He even asks how hot you would like the dish cooked, and when a revved up dish arrives it has not simply had more chilli added but been cooked to perfection and the range of flavour still come through but with a great taste of heat. Perfect! Overall we are very happy that our local Indian restaurant is firmly back on the map but are worried that we may go too often! The other restaurants we had been using will definitely lose out and they are very high standard Indian restaurants. Obviously we will still have to check and compare!Highly recommended! Keep it up!

The food was terrible, inedible and flavorless. the highlight being the Dhall Samba which consisted of a very few unspiced chana lentils in what appeared to be juice from tinned tomatoes. Luckily we knew there was an off license next door so we purchased wine from there but the staff should tell their customers this as the table next to us left because of the no alcohol change. Also it now appears to have lack of an atmosphere, we were there at 8.30pm on a Saturday. If you want a very quiet evening then this is the place! The staff were courteous and helpful. We have been regular customers at this, our local restaurant, since it's opening and also during the past 3 years we have participated in the VIP Dining Card (VIP dining cards work in conjunction with local restaurants by knocking on yr door & selling a discount card @ £25 per year for a 241 offer at the chosen restaurant). We purchased our latest card in good faith in November 14 & on presentation 10 days ago we was astounded, to say the least, of being accused of tampering with the date by a rude waiter who had the arrogance of laughing at us and speaking about us to his colleague in his own language, not in English. He refused our VIP Dining card, which we have never had trouble with previously, and would only keep insisting that our card's date had been tampered with and we should contact VIP Dining direct to take it up with them. It most certainly has not been tampered with. The date on the card was written out by the VIP Dining salesperson in November, he wrote it in a thick black marker pen...it is a coated plastic laminated type card and the date is quite clear, it has not been a problem using this until now. We asked for the manager, who we know from previous visits, as we thought this awkward mistake would be easily cleared up as an unpleasant misunderstanding. The rude waiter advised he did not know where the manager was and also he didn't have a mobile no for him...really!! He told us to contact VIP Dining direct. As we were long standing customers we asked the rude waiter to request the Manager to contact us and left our mobile number. No phone call has been forthcoming, we went back to the restaurant hoping to see the manager in case our message had not been passed on. He was not there and we was shown our mobile no written in their diary. We can now only put this down to plain ignorance by all concerned at this restaurant... Including the manager who chooses not to even have the interest or decency to investigate this matter. We have contacted VIP Dining via email and telephone several times to put forward our complaint but no response either. Would you not hope that The Saffron would also be interested in following our pre registered card up via VIP Dining to get to the bottom of the matter, since hearing our efforts at contact has been ignored! I now realise why this restaurant is at best only half full at weekends and most evenings empty. Let's hope more loyal supportive customers like ourselves see the light and totally boycott this restaurant.

The food was delivered to our table a tad slowly, and unlike other curry houses, we had to tip it onto our plates ourselves, but no real problem. I have eaten at this restaurant for many, many years and it has always delivered the most excellent Indian cuisine. It has never been more than half full when I have visited which is usual on a weekend evening for what I consider to be a 5 star diner. No idea why, may be it is that proverbial hidden gem? I have never understood that to be honest. The menu is wide, varied and interesting with clear explanations of what you are considering. The wine list is acceptable with many other drinks on offer. If you have a vegetarian or non curry fancier with you, don't leave them in the car, bring them in, as there is a good choice of dishes to make them smile. The food is so tasty, perfectly cooked chicken and tender lamb, all beautifully spiced and so aromatic. The service is attentive, discrete and friendly with the owner noticing everything. The price for two is around £50 including, sides, bread, drinks and service (May 2014). Can't wait to go back. Highly Recommended.

I should preface this review by declaring a greater background in Indian food than most (see personal profile), which might explain why I am often less impressed than some who enthuse over what are nice but fairly standard high street Indian restaurants. Don’t misunderstand me, these usually provide a very satisfying curry meal, but in most cases without anything to lift them above the wide band of good but typical (and therefore average) high street curryhouses that can be found almost everywhere. This restaurant is situated close to Chelsfield Station, which is on the outskirts of Orpington but miles away from Chelsfield Village - one of the peculiarities of the local geography. I last visited in 2009 when reviewing for the Curry Club, and recalled that it had been good. I was keen to see whether it remained so. It is a pleasant, modern-looking restaurant which is larger inside than it appears from the frontage. It was worryingly quiet for a Saturday evening so I feared the worse, but was heartened to see that the menu was as I remembered, with some of the familiar dishes on offer but also many different dishes, particularly under the heading of 'Showcase Speciality Dishes’. There are too many to mention, but a sample of these dishes are Deshi Lamb (lamb in onion sauce with potatoes), Chicken Gastaba (diced chicken marinated in garlic, green pepper and tomato), Karaki Lamb (lamb with fresh coriander, garlic, ginger, tamarind and green peppers) and, under the seafood selection, Crab Malabari (crabmeat prepared with coconut, chopped coriander leaves, mustard seeds and onion - also available as a starter). With such a tempting menu it was difficult to choose, but in the end we had the Goan dish of Chicken Xacuti, which was excellent, and a Karaki Lamb, which was also extremely flavoursome with very tender lamb. The Tarka Dall was excellent – one of the best tasting I’ve had for a while – and the Dry Mixed Vegetable also very good. For such a good selection of more creative dishes the prices were very reasonable, and at the time of writing they offer an excellent value mid-week (Monday to Thursday) special of main course, side dish, rice and nan for £9.50, or add a starter for £10.95. Portion size was good, and the service welcoming and efficient, so all in all I thought it an above average restaurant and one that I will look forward to returning to when next in the area.

Food nice. Majority of staff very professional and polite however 1 person In particular was probably the rudest person I’ve seen . Acted like everything we asked for was a problem. Our plans of a nice meal before ent theatre went wrong when my partner rang me to say he had broken down on the A20. I had already started eating and ordered some food as a main so had to apologise and say to the staff I will be back , explained the situation and I am happy to pay for the food I’ve eaten and ordered. I was told not to worry and sort it when I can back( we were staying at the hotel) My partner rang the hotel to explain and ask if we could book for dinner for after the theatre. It’s was implied I had left without paying 😡. Anyway eventually after to the theatre came back for dinner. Food was really nice. We were then asked if we wanted breakfast the next day as they needed to make sure someone was there to do it… Room was nice. No concerns really although could do with a clean in places but a comfortable stay. Breakfast was disappointing. Got a call at 7.55am to say breakfast was ready🤷🏻♀️. We hadn’t ordered it so not sure what we were going to get. Staff member very nice and professional. Breakfast was either cornflakes or fruit and fibre and some barely toasted bread. Then about ten minutes later 4 hard boiled eggs were brought out. Very underwhelming. On the whole wouldn’t stay again purely due the room not being cheap and the attitude from the one staff member in particular. Shame as had heard nice things about the place

I took my young son to introduce him to a curry house curry. We went for a Sunday Buffet. The food was delicious and a good temperature. The meat was good quality and beautifully tender. I don't normally like eating lamb but the Kashmiri Lamb Bhuna was delightful. It was very nice. While we might have liked some other things to be available it was a nice selection. The desert options were nice too. The staff were very friendly and inviting. It was a very pleasant experience and felt my son was able to have a comfortable and engaging new experience.

For around £20 pp inc a few beers you can’t beat it! Ok maybe you’ll find slightly better food elsewhere but it’s great value and won’t disappoint 👍🏼
