Saffron in Cardiff

This place is the quintessential ‘greasy spoon’ but with less grease 😂 fabulous menu with all the classics and more. We ‘pimped’ our breakfast order by bypassing the (excellent) range of set menus and ordering cheese on toast with extra sausage, bacon, egg and hash brown. Despite this being a bit of a high maintenance order the food came super-speedily and the staff were friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. I will definitely return next time I’m in Cardiff - highly recommended for a great, no frills, brunch!

A visit to Canton this morning. We decided on lunch here. The staff were friendly. There were two orders of omelettes, one cheese and one Turkish. I had the chicken salad. I take a risk in cafes at how the salad will come out. Usually just the ice burg side salad doubled and meat on top. The salad was beautifully presented, chicken cooked lovely and mozzarella too. Really didn’t expect it but hats off. The omelettes (with chips and salad) was also lovely. The Turkish one was full of flavour. Will come back when visiting Cardiff again.

Used to be the best cafe around but since new owners have taken over its very poor small portions at big prices wont be coming here again sorry

Nice enough breakfast but not sure why there were olives and peppers on the plate, as well as a stack of fried onions! Don't think that's been well thought out! Definitely need to get rid of those as not necessary! Rest of it was very nice and staff were very friendly and polite!

The roast dinner was absolutely fantastic big portions lovely chicken and fresh high quality vegetables and proper gravy the cherry pie and custard was also top Quality this dinner is better than most resteraunts i will never cook a sunday roast again as i will come here every sunday

Visited on 21 September prior to the Cardiff City home game... ordered our food at 13:40 and were still waiting at 14:15 at which point we gave up as the person behind the counter said it would be another 10 minutes and we asked for a refund. We will not be returning as they obviously do not know how to run a cafe. Customer service -0

Was going to go to Wetherspoons for a breakfast with our baby - we decided to try a local establishment for a change. The staff were welcoming and served us quickly (it was empty). No card machine - cash only. Our 1 year old baby loves scrambled egg. We asked for a portion of egg on it's own under the extra's menu for 90p. The staff refused and said it does not work like this, I u must be a whole children's meal. I swapped out my own egg for scrambled to give to my baby. The sausage was the cheapest meat you could buy - we saw the staff buying more products in a frozen food store across the road afterwards. Bacon was overcooked and staff did not care. Definitely would go to a chain restaurant for a better service and value.

We've been eating at the Saffron for many years and have found that the Veggie Breakfast is the best around. The fried eggs are perfection. All in all you get 2 eggs, hash browns, veggie sausages, tomato, beans, fried bread and toast. To my knowledge the same people have owned Saffron for many years and this comes across in the cooking. Definitely worth a visit.

Greeted by cherry “ good morning” on both occasions that we visited We had breakfast which was well cooked with generous portions Hubby had tea I chose coffee which was lovely frothy coffee just like the coffee I remember in the Italian Bracchi cafes in the welsh valleys in my youth Lovely and clean We noticed they do Sunday lunch - we will no longer be in the area on Sunday - but I just bet we are missing a treat

My husband and I have just eaten at this cafe, we had the big breakfast, which is great value, comes with a drink to, I had the hot chocolate, which was delicious and my husband had the cappuccino. I couldn't eat it all, very generous portions, the food was delicious, freshly cooked and piping hot. The cafe itself is in a prime spot( if you're doing some shopping in Canton,) and they offer a great varied menu. Staff friendly and welcoming. Well done, we will be back!

Saffron Cafe offers your usual greasy spoon food at a very cheap price, but I was let down on my visit there. I ordered the big breakfast but watched others who had also ordered cooked breakfasts after us get their food before us. I didn't mind this too much but when our food arrived my breakfast was missing fried bread, one sausage and even though I'd ordered beans instead of tomatoes, they gave me tomatoes. I'm not the type to kick up a fuss so I didn't go up to complain and just ate what was on the plate. You know you're not going to get fine dining at a cafe like this but I still felt the breakfast was a disappointment. Several items were overcooked (especially the black pudding which had the texture of coal) and I just felt it should have been better. Like I said, the price was very low, I may have just had a bad experience but can't say I enjoyed my breakfast, and next time I'll probably choose somewhere else.

Great little cafe in Canton. Spotlessly clean. Staff friendly. Good choice of menu and reasonably priced.

I go here regularly as it's close to work. Can only comment on the two sizes of breakfast as I never have anything else. Service is very friendly, food is served fast (important when working), prices decent and most importantly the balance on the plate is spot on. They don't try and fob you off with one rasher and half a plate of beans and that's why they're always busy. I usually have the set breakfast as the full is a bit big when you have to go back to work, but both are great. Also, place is clean and comfortable and plenty of newspapers to read.

Disgusting breakfast very over priced stuff very disrespectful and rude bacon was solid and eggs was like rubber

Maybe not a gourmet dining experience but then that's not what you go there for, if what you're after is a great tasting breakfast then you're in the right place.

Encantador pequeño secreto en la carretera crwys. Personal amable y muy, muy limpio y bien presentado. Un montón para elegir, mi pareja y yo tuvimos el gran desayuno, que era muy sabroso no grasienta que ninguno de nosotros pudo acabar.

I have never crossed over the road to this café before, always kept to the same side of Canton but after my first visit, it won't be my last. A lovely breakfast, excellent value, filling, clean, friendly staff. Breakfast, toast and coffee for £5.50.

This is a lovely little cafe well situated in the Canton area of Cardiff.Its a typical neighbourhood cafe with an extensive breakfast and lunch menu. The staff are vey friendly and the service is quick.We called in here a few weeks ago fancying a full cooked breakfast one Sunday morning. We were not disapointed, the food was excellent, not at all greasy, good quality (thick slices of bacon, not that thin stuff you get in some Cafes) and plenty of it. You order at the counter, service is swift and good prices, what more could you want? The staff are friendly and on top over everything else the place is spotlessly clean. Will we be back...most definitely.

We only popped in quickly whilst passing on our way out for the day. The staff are really friendly and efficient. I was suprised at how quick the food came out, how much we were given for the price and how tasty it was. Will deffo keep Saffron Cafe in mind next time we're in the area.

Two friends and I with a hangover came to the Crwys Road branch as a result of our usual breakfast cafe being too busy to seat us, and what a find this was! The staff immediately greeted us and were extremely helpful to my gluten intolerant friend with replacing certain options of the breakfast to suit her needs. We all had a fry-up and were very impressed with the portion size considering the price, and we were also happy to see that the food was not too greasy either. From what we could see the kitchen was extremely clean and the food arrived very quickly. We will definitely visit again!

Myself and my friend had breakfast here today and it was really good value for money whilst being tasty (especially for being a little hungover!).

Whenever I fancy breakfast out, this is my one of my favourites!

Myself and the lads were in Cardiff for Ireland rugby game , we fancied a greasy spoon to get us in shape for the day ahead, we found Saffron and were delighted to find it, the big breakfast is mega, really nice, big portion, well cooked and good quality, fantastic service also. It was so nice we returned the next morning for round two.well impressed.

If I'm judging the saffron as a greasy spoon cafe, it's one of the best I've been in, friendly efficient service, lovely breakfast with plenty of bacon for less than a fiver. If it's breakfast your after, this is the place to find.

It really seems the earlier the better with the saffron, get in early order your breakfast and get out before the rush. It does get quite busy for a small cafe.Nice food, reasonable prices can't quibble what you see is what you get. There's a lot of cafés around canton but the missis drags me back here all the time. This is part of her childhood. Keep up the good work guys

I hadnt been here for quite someone so at first thought it had been redecorated. My partner is in a wheel chair, and even though it was obvious we were having problems getting through the door, it was another customer that came to help whilst the waitress continued to clean the tables. Once we were sitting down and we had decided what we wanted and I went up to order. I tried to make polite convervation about how much it had changed but all I received was a rude reply about how it was new management and change happens. I then tried to make our order but each time I tried to order a meal I was told that they either didnt have it or that it was a mistake on the menu, it was on the fifth attempt that I was able to choose something they had. I choose faggots,peas and chips and my partnet choose cottage pie. When the meals arrived it was yet again a disapointment. The faggots were frozen in the middle, all you could taste from the cottage pie was salt whilst the vegetables had been cooked to death! We ended up going next door to the local wetherpsoons for our pudding and coffee because it had been such a bad experience. Obviously, we will NOT be returning, one of the worst meals I have ever had!

It's been a while since I visited Saffron and the food is still as good and reasonably priced. I had scrambled eggs, sausages, chips, mushrooms and a coffee. It didn't take too long between ordering and serving and the staff were most cheerful serving the meal. Maybe it's just me, but the other thing I like about the place is the location, it's nice to tuck into a meal and just watch the world go by. Unfortunately the view of the street was blocked by workmen doing something or other on this occasion, but on other visits, it's something I like to do in Saffrons. Anyway, a very pleasant visit.

Pleasant little apparently family run cafe on the corner of Cowbridge Road in Cardiff.Clean and tidy and good selection from the menu, and amazingly cheap.Tea for two, a can of soft drink, nice jacket potato with mixed cheese and a cheese toastie all for £8.50.Would visit again when next we visit Cardiff.

Another cafe worth a visit. Great cafe food and never greasy. The food is always presented well, the big breakfast is value for money and I have never been disappointed eating there.On Sundays I often go to the Saffron for Sunday lunch. If I'm on a time schedule the service is very quick so I'll pop in there not to miss out on a Sunday dinner. The food is very reasonable, nothing fancy, yet very tasty, well presented and well worth the £4.80 that's with dessert! Defiantly a high quality local cafe and very reasonable with good service.

I can not fault the service and the quality of the food. The 'Big breakfast' is one of the most filling and tastiest plates of food ever. Myself and my wife use saffrons as a treat on a Sunday morning. Good quality and good prices, keep it up!
