Unfortunately from previous reviews it appears that Aberdare Hall as a University Hall of Residence has significantly become worse than it was previously. I am currently living here and wouldn't advise any first year to choose this place to live in. We have had massive problems with leakages and even ceilings collapsing, which has ruined belongings of some residents within the building this year. It's a true shame the building has been let down to this standard as it'd be a brilliant building to live in if this wasn't the case. I understand that as it's a listed building you can't do much to it, but it should be at least maintained to a safe standard. Furthermore, the food on the catered package is, in my opinion, not worth the money. It has often been cold, dry and there is little to drink other than water (sometimes we've had squash but that has only been a small amount of times). There are also no sanitary bins despite being an all-girls residence and there being sanitary bins for guests downstairs, so be prepared that you'll have to individually bag your sanitary products up and place them in your own room bins. Despite this however, there are some pros to living here; there are relatively large rooms and it is extremely close to the city centre and many of the university buildings. Furthermore, the catered setting allows you to make groups of friends pretty quickly. Therefore in my opinion it's important that anyone wishing to add this to their list of preferred accommodation should choose the self-catered package, as you're in a much younger building where I haven't heard of any complaints since September, or weigh up the pros and cons of going part-catered (Monday-Friday, only dinner) in the older part of the building.

He vivido un año aquí durante mi erasmus y es un lugar con un jardín precioso y el ala de jardín muy acogedor. Baño y cocina compartida pero suficientes para no coincidir con nadie. Grandes momentos vividos.

I had to move residences, because one of the RLAs were abusive towards me. When I moved, my cafeteria was no longer at my school. This caused me to be unable to use my catering. When I approached the reception they told me there was nothing I could do and asked me to approach them again in January. I was told my room was not self catered and that it would overload the kitchen. This turned out to be a lie, as I later found out when I was switched to self catered while staying in the same room. After this, several other students has moved in to my flat and are using the kitchen. I have spoken to other student living here and they have had similar experiences with the management here. I feel scammed and I am now unable to pay my fees because I have been paying double for my food. The reception is refusing me help and claiming that they did help when I approached them, which is a lie. Recently they turned of the heat with the weather being 12 degrees Celsius in the day and 5 in the night. It is almost impossible to live and study in my room with the room being these freezing temperatures. I have been fined hundred pounds for not taking the trash out. I don’t use the kitchen more than a few times a month and I don’t throw anything away. The housemaid will randomly claim that the trash must be thrown out, even though it is not full. They give us a few hours to do so before we get fined and usually everyone is in school at this time. They will also give you a fine of 10 pounds if you do not pay within a week. They don’t send out a notification on mail and just leaves a note in the kitchen. If you don’t use the kitchen you won’t catch it. I’ve probably received more than ten penalties. It was not like this where I used to live. They will also wake you up at 8 in the morning every day whit lengthy announcements over the speakers in the hallways. The doors are very thin so it sounds like it’s in your room. Often they will leave the speakers on for half an hour by accident, making it hard to fall back to sleep. The fire alarm goes of maybe every second week at any time of the day and night. Usually this can take half an hour or and hour to get back in from the meeting point in the lawn. The receptionist also refused to help me regarding moving when I picked up my food at first. And later I was told by someone else in reception that this could easily be fixed. This receptionist is incredibly unhelpful and has also refused other student to move room for no apparent reason. They also put out magazines called “lady” for us in our flat, like they have some wild sexist idea about how women should behave.I was scammed by them and they pray on vulnerable students for money grabs. The people living here are nice, but I would stay away from this place at any cost

Had lunch which consisted of scampi, potatoes and peas followed by the most delicious vegan chocolate torte with ice cream and berries. Cannot fault the atmosphere of the dining hall, the quality of the food or the service.

Aberdare Hall was built in 1893 and retains many interesting period features. It is adjacent to the Cathays Park campus and offers both catered and self catered accommodation. During term-time, the catered option provides breakfast and evening meals Monday to Friday and breakfast at weekends.

The food here is reasonably priced, with the days specials alongside a selection of salads, jacket potatoes etc. Good value for money, this place is a good lunch venue and the building is just beautiful.

Although this ornate Victorian building is part of Cardiff University, I've only recently discovered that it's open to the general public between 12 - 2pm for a splendid lunch time menu. It has a choice of either a 3 course carvery for £10 or daily specials, baked potatoes and salad bar. I chose the fish pie with fresh vegetables and my friend had the beef and ale pie, which we both found delicious. Also, what's amazing about this gem of a place is the freshly made deserts, we shared the scrumptious pumpkin pie with cream for only £2.30. The general ambience of Aberdare Hall is both tranquil and relaxed and a great escape from the noise of the nearby city centre.

The restaurant with the best view in Cardiff also can supply you with a damn fine breakfast buffet. Window seats (or if possible -this is Wales- outside) are the best.
