Hollybush pub in Cardiff

What a brilliant meal and service today . The food was delightful and the service by Callum was outstanding and has been each time we have come here. He even remembered what we drank . I am absolutely delighted with our experience.

Myself and my partner were staying in the village hotel, just up the road from the hollybush, went for walk popped in for pint decided to have a carvary here as it looked and smelt amazing, absolute bargain, food beautiful, couldn't believe how good it was for the price, We are staying in the village hotel in a few weeks and we are going to book a Christmas meal at that price they are charging, really good value.

Ordered a takeaway carvery and we were pleasantly surprised. The food was hot, well packaged with generous servings. As a plus the boxes the food was supplied in can be re-used.We only ordered from here as the near by Toby was fully booked, but would definitely come back again, as the food was much tastier and whole place didn’t feel dated. The staff were friendly and helpful, but also ensured diners had masks on when required.Parking is free without having to bother validating tickets etc. They also have pizzas and we will be back to try those soon.

Very nice food can’t wait till it opens again very good value for money very well mannered staff and very welcoming would recommend it to anyone going out for a family meal

I come here regularly and love spending an evening here! All the staff are so amazing and friendly! I don’t regularly have food here, but when I do it’s is amazing! I love the burgers and selection of pizzas. Me and my dog (sunny) usually sit outside, as dogs aren’t allowed inside due to serving food. The staff always come out to say hi to him, he’s turned into a bit of a regular himself! Since COVID the hollybush has done their upmost to ensure all customers are safe, there is hand sanitiser stations, along with all staff ensuring their own masks, and customers masks, are worn at all times when moving around the pub. Thanks Mike and team!

I’ve not had a Sunday lunch for a long time so I called the pub at the spur of the moment and booked a table. The food was excellent and the staff were very professional considering these unprecedented times. Would definitely recommend this place.

El gerente fue, revisó y regresó para informarnos que la carne no es adecuada debido a cómo se cocina, y se disculpó constantemente. El esposo dijo que no se preocupara y que podría comer salchichas con el asador, le dijeron que, por supuesto, le dieron 6 salchichas grandes, tengo que decir que eran geniales y esta es la mejor forma en que se ha manejado su alergia cuando salimos a comer. Vine aquí para tomar un desayuno caliente y, aunque el desayuno estaba bien, el Hollybush en sí necesita una buena limpieza y necesita un trabajo de reparación.Lo primero que noté fue el moho negro creciendo en las paredes interiores en el área de la ventana. No es lo que esperarías de un lugar al que vas a comer. Lo siguiente que noté fue que la comida de clientes anteriores estaba salpicada en las paredes. Parecía seco, por lo que mostró que no se limpia mucho. La alfombra parecía que tampoco había sido aspirada en un tiempo.Con Covid 19 a nuestro alrededor, esperaría que la higiene fuera de suma importancia, pero no en el lugar.Por esta razón, no volveremos pronto.Limpiarse ya que la gente se mantendrá alejada de lo contrario.¡Ojalá me hubiera ido a otro lado ahora!

Esta fue nuestra segunda visita aquí desde que se levantó el bloqueo. Honestamente puedo decir que este es el lugar más organizado con apego al distanciamiento social, la limpieza y la desinfección que he visitado. El personal es muy agradable, acogedor y servicial y la comida es fresca y sabrosa. Bien hecho en un sistema que funciona perfectamente y todo el personal trabajador.

My gf & I went to the Hollybush for Sunday lunch. The food was as usual superb and the staff including their Manager were great. Always a pleasure to eat & drink in The Hollybush.

Met up with family that we haven't seen in a while. Lush food and perfect hospitality from the staff and Mike the manager. Will definitely visit again!

Hoy es el primer día que salimos del encierro y teníamos que hacer una visita vencida a la sociedad de construcción en Whitchurch. Es tan agradable estar fuera, pero todavía nervioso por la situación. Veamos si podemos almorzar. Llamamos al Hollybush de camino a casa un poco preocupados por cómo funcionaría el asador. No deberíamos habernos preocupado. Recibidos en la puerta e inmediatamente pudimos volver a desinfectar nuestras manos, nos reservaron para dar nuestro nombre y número de teléfono de contacto (que se usó cuando recibí un mensaje de texto de reserva en segundos) Nos llevaron a nuestra mesa (todas las mesas se han reorganizado para dar amplio distanciamiento social y se explicó que luego de seleccionar nuestro menú para que uno de nosotros se vaya al bar observando distanciamiento social y haga nuestro pedido y regrese a nuestra mesa. Hice nuestros pedidos, compré bebidas y pagué contactless y volví a esperar a ser llamó al asador, esto fue casi inmediato. Luego nos llamarían al asador como pareja cuando estaba libre una mesa a la vez. Un gerente, al ver que mi esposa tenía un carrito de oxígeno, le dijo que cuando había completado sus selecciones para Deje el plato allí y regrese a nuestra mesa y él le llevaría la comida, lo cual hizo de inmediato. A diferencia de un asador normal, todas las porciones las hacía el chef pero eran porciones muy generosas. La comida era excelente y muy caliente.Todo el personal estaba trabajando muy duro limpiando mesas y manteniéndonos a todos seguros. Este lugar es un buen ejemplo de una organización que ha pensado mucho en crear un sistema seguro que observe todas las reglas. Habiendo visto ejemplos de comportamiento tonto en la prensa, este fue un buen ejemplo de cómo se puede hacer extremadamente bien. Felicitaciones volveremos.

La primera visita y todas las normas de higiene posteriores al cierre parecen cumplidas. El anfitrión nos dio instrucciones claras sobre cómo hacer un pedido, etc., y tuvimos un excelente asador. También es agradable descubrir un pequeño paseo por el bosque al otro lado de la calle. ¡La próxima vez haremos una excursión!

First visit post lockdown on a sunday very well organised and clean. Well done all, Food lovely as always

I have read the reviews on here that say hit and miss , we must have been lucky. We chose a carvery and all the food was hot and fresh . The staff were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our visit and can't wait to come back .

Went here today as this used to be the place to eat with an incredible carvery and gravy to die for! Unfortunately it's not any more!!! Kids pasta was stone cold, carvery was freezing had to have it heated in microwave! Gravy was like slop and no flavour to it! Beef was just full of fat and incredibly chewy had to leave it! Stuffing was so sticky it was horrific to eat! Not one member of staff came to our table to ask if we needed anything or if the food was ok! Had to hunt staff down to ask for anything! Spent just over £50 and believe me when i say it was a waste! Bring back the old hollybush!!! Will never return!

Ups and downs with this place, tbh not as good as it used to be before it got taken over by Stonehouse. One visit the veg selection is very good the next it’s very poor doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. The portion size of the meat they give you literally varies person to person, I even mean between me and the guest I was with. Only visited for food, couldn’t comment on the pub side of things.

This place is worth a visit as it has lmproved a lot over the last few months . Meat portions are bit better and good choice of vegetables or salad to choose from on the carvery . Staff are always friendly ,helpful and attentive .

We sat tucked away in the corner eating what was an ok meal with exception to the portion size of the kids mac and cheese (would have had more in a smart price micro meal for 80p. It wouldn’t have filled my 2year old even though it is advertised as a bigger meal for over 5s) to look up and find the ceiling full of mold and a hole in the middle of it. Was quite off putting when your trying to make most of a mediocre meal. We were planning on having desert but that didn’t happen as we wanted to leave. Can’t see us returning anytime in the near future.

Very friendly staff.To start with pigs in blankets halloumi fries and chicken strips which where all very nice with chilli sauce. We had burgers for mains which where very good.The menu is large, but for me I would like to see steak and ribs options.Desserts where greatGuinness was goodPrice was fair.

Clean, quiet, easy to park, extensive menu with good choices, But. Only One staff member serving, although she was helpful when we got to order. Food was very poor quality. Overall , quite disappointing .

It is a nice quiet place where anybody could ho and enjoy self. It is clean and staff is very helpful. If you want to have a Sunday roast it is the place to go. Parking is plenty. Easy access from the centre as well as from the motorway. It is recommended.

We have been visiting this restaurant for years but after today we will not be returning. Firstly, there was only two meats to choose from instead of the usual minimum choice of three. To add insult to injury, the beef was inedible. Since I chose only to order the beef, I was left with a dinner of just vegetables. It was a terrible cut, the beef contained so much gristle it was impossible to chew it. Very disappointed with this standard. I have attached photos to show.

4 adultos y 5 niños fueron a desayunar con Santa el 23 de diciembre. Papá Noel fue genial con nuestros 5 nietos, ¡incluso hizo "el hilo dental" con ellos! El desayuno era encantador y el personal eficiente y amable.

Nuestra visita fue increíble e incluso tuvimos un poco de bromas con el personal, incluso cuando también llevé la camiseta de la ciudad de My Swansea. Siempre estoy listo para bromear con los fanáticos de Cardiff (amigables), el personal estaba bromeando conmigo y me encanta ser Swansea Jack en un restaurante de Cardiff. Pero era la primera vez que tenía pescado y papas fritas, ya que normalmente tengo el asador cada vez que voy allí, pero quería un cambio, así que mi compañero y yo teníamos pescado y papas fritas para variar. We have visited this Carvery soo many times as it really is the best. After trying many other different carverys in Cardiff, we will always come back to here. It is so reasonably priced (as are the drinks) and is more than worth the money, you will never leave feeling unfull! The meat on the Carvery is of great quality, the gammon is especially nice. They offer a variety of veg and potatoes, all which taste great and the gravy is simply amazing. All the staff here are lovely and helpful and it has a great atmosphere to enjoy a casual delicious Carvery on any day of the week. If you download the Stonehouse app you can find many different offers available (e.g 25% off) to make your visit even better! (Pics are from various different visits - never disappointed!) although we’ve never ordered from the rest of the menu, it is very varied and all looks great too.

This used to be a great local pub with carvery. Now it has changed, all the cask ales have gone except doombar which was off, so no loss there. Disappointed.

The food was OK but there was no vegetarian gravy (only beef and onion gravy). The food is reasonably priced.

There were 13 in our group staying at the Village Hotel up the road. WE deceided to visit the Hollybush as the prices were much better than the hotel. The staff were very welcoming and the food was excellent. We would all recommend this pub.

The food we had at lunchtime was poor. The meat was beautiful but the veg was awful peas like bullets cheap frozen mixed veg no cheese sauce on cauliflower just awful!!!

The food quality at this restaurant can change like the wind, superb one day poor the next.staff need some real training to get an improvement and servers needs to be kept cleaner. Sauces, curry and beans need looking at as staff seem to just walk by without looking at them. Do not like cutlery being stood in mugs on table as many others could have handled before you use.

The pub provides a limited menu, & I was disappointed with the pasta meal-the shells tasted burnt. However, the pizza, fish & chips, & particularly the carvery were excellent & reasonably priced.

Once again had a lovely meal, Allison was very friendly and pleasant. Food was excellent on this occasion.

Situated just off J32 M4. Visited here many times in the past. Great atmosphere. Lovely food with some great offers sent to you if you download the app. Skinny pizza and fries for me today. Delicious. Carvery looks amazing too. Will be back.

El asado dominical del asado fue, como siempre, excelente, pero el otro menú fue espantoso. Mi marido tenía jamón, huevo y papas fritas, que era pasable, pero mi hijo tenía una pizza que era incomible. Estaba seco y todas las coberturas se habían colocado después de que la pizza estaba cocida, por lo que fue horrible. Ahora lo anuncian como un restaurante de pizza, pero nunca volvería a ser engañado.

We visited yesterday for dinner. I have been many times before to this and other carveries but was shocked to arrive yesterday to find the restaurant had no carvery meat which nearly ruined our dinner plan as had particularly come to this restaurant because of option of either carvery or pizzas.

Tuvimos una comida de carnes asadas con pavo y ternera, las cuales estaban perfectamente preparadas. Las verduras estaban bien cocidas, es decir, eran muy suaves, bien, si te gusta de esa manera. Al dente no lo fue. El personal de servicio era agradable y nos encantaría volver.

Havent been here for a little while because we had a couple of not great experiences when trying the pizzas and burgers so have been to ANEURIN BEVAN a couple of times but just picked up a £75 parking fine there while we had food which if I'm honest was pretty poor! So I'm going to start going back to the hollybush where I know I will get a good carvery and not have to worry about getting a parking fine in their carpark looking foreward to my worry free visit!

Plates were not hot enough (compared with our local on the IOW). Meats were fine but roast potatoes soggy. (Ours are great). Quality control needed Mr Stonehouse! Still good value though!

Just been to the carvery for a quick lunch and I must say this was the worst one ever! On arrival we weren’t greeted because the staff were too busy chatting between themselves. Once they finally acknowledged the fact we were standing there in front of them for the last few minutes. We made our way to the tables to find the only available table was dirty ish but was better than the other two the staff took around 15 min to come and clear, headed to the carvery to order and half the staff was missing and what was there looked stale and tired. The table didn’t even have enough cutlery not even a napkin...

Tried a Calzone (Meat feast) for the first time today. Great value for money and well made by Chef. The new menu is much better.

I have eaten here on a few occasions and found the food to be of good quality and good value for money

One of our favourite places to go for a meal out usually. Been there twice recently first time there was no meat available until after 7 pm due to problems . The second time there was any meat on the carvery so there was a ten minute wait by the time meat was ready some of the vegetables had gone cold . Noticed also no pork available every time we been there and we were limited to beef or turkey as there was no gammon this The carvery is very popular here, pity its going downhill . Plus meat portions are small .

My family and I were regulars at the Hollybush when it was a carvery. When it changed hands, we lost faith and ventured elsewhere - one of those we ventured to was another Stonehouse. So when we saw that the Hollybush was part of this chain - of course we gave it a try - and we were certainly not disappointed.

Good food always warm friendly staff, only down side - can sometime be waiting for your meat to be put on your plate for a while as staff are sometimes out the kitchen which isn’t very often but can be annoying, still my favourite Sunday roast cavery in Cardiff

We booked for our Christmas meal having eaten here a couple of weeks earlier, and it was enjoyed by everyone. There was an excellent choice of starters and desserts and Carvery for the main course

Called in had 2 x calzone which were really really good, staff were a credit to the place very helpful and polite would definitely use again, Thanks again to all the staff keep up the good work.

Very grubby, food on floor & chairs. Waitresses looked grubby, one kept scratching her head & rubbing her nose.

have eaten here on a number of occasions and have always had nice food at a good price the only down side is if you don't have the Carvery which is instant and you order pizza or burger you have to wait a fairly long time, twice we have waited 40 mins for service.

We received a Gift voucher as our previous meal there was not good, I filled the survey on the app, and promptly received a reply and a gift voucher...

Got my order wrong twice. Had to change order because they didn't serve chips or nut roast. Had to work out my own change because they couldn't work it out - then accused me of giving wrong amount of money. Brought out starters 25 minutes apart because they 'forgot' the second starter. Rude chef serving the meat. Food was below average - had no sauces on offer and mash was dry. Limited vegetarian options - either a nut roast / pasta shells or nothing. Wouldn't come back - absolutely shameful!! No flavour in food & bad service.

Just arrived and left. Came for a carvery as it is listed that food is served until 10pm. It is 9.05pm and the deck is empty. Disappointed and hungry.

Attended today at 2pm. Was advised a booking was not required. I was advised to wait in the bar area and would be called in about 30 mins. I enquired about the table to be advised another 20 mins. One hour after entering the premises I left without food.. Very disappointing.

Went on the spur of the moment and had a carvery, it was lovely. Hot, fresh and very tasty. Best I have tasted in a very long time

I ordered the veg tart which came out rock hard although the filling was very nice. My Mother had the Sausages & Mash and the Sausages were burnt. I guess you get what you pay for. Staff were pleasant.

Had not been to this place for years, however called for Sunday Carvery with a family group, was taken back, good quality food, good friendly staff, a good enjoyable Sunday dinner. Will definitely be returning and would highly recommend.

Call in for dinner when staying at the village hotel was made to feel very welcome . Had pizza the first night and like it so much when on Saturday as well for a carvery great value

My husband and I went here, around 3:45 for a carvery, it was not that busy, think we timed it right, the meats were tender and fresh, and all veg was piping hot and not dried out...

This is a very busy restaurant, I recommend you book in advance. The whole experience was ok, however the table we were sat on was very wet.

My husband and myself visited here for lunch on Wednesday. We at lunchtime and the place was busy, but few tables available. We opted for the carvery, once again a delicious meal, hot and freshly cooked, would recommend.

Six of us dined at the Hollybush last Friday, arriving at 12:30 pm. There was a large queue of people waiting to prepay for tneir meal choices at the “check in” desk. This seemed a disorganised process and unduly lengthy.

Good food at a reasonable price, if your luck the staff will be singing and entertaining! Great team work

Spotted the Hollybush while missing our turn into the Village Hotel. Glad we did! The Village Hotel menu was so expensive, we took the short walk down to the Hollubush. What a great decision!

I've visited The Hollybush many times and although the furnishings were worn and dated I've usually had a good meal here. I visited yesterday and did not enjoy the experience. The lady carving the meat carved very carefully in order to give small portions, the roasties looked tasty but didn't actually taste of anything and neither did the yorkshire puddings which look and taste like 'smartprice' supermarket yorkshires. They certainly look nothing like the picture on their website! I would have awarded them one star but the waitresses were nice and friendly so I awarded the extra star. Other local carvery's are about the same price but far better quality.

Went here for a Carvery on a Monday lunch time. Really couldn't fault it.

We had visited previously but due to the dirty conditions of the tables, carpet, chairs and self serve areas we decided the place wasn’t for us. However after the rebrand and refit we decided to give the place another go, so we visited the Hollybush again yesterday (Sunday 12th August) at approx 6pm for a carvery. I’m sorry to report that there was no change in the place. Tables left sticky, carpeted seating area to the front of the building was filthy from trodden in food, the self serve area where the gravy and sauces are was dirty with empty dishes and the actual carvery was dry and unappetising. There are far better places to go for a Sunday lunch, we wouldn’t recommend and we certainly wont be going back.

Just returned home from a 'Carvery' at this newly renovated restaurant - only meat available was turkey ( very dried up) no yorkshire puddings, food not at all fresh, gravy cold and the area to pour the gravy was filthy, someone from kitchen did come and clear it with a scraper!!

Received a gift card as a present. We opted for the pizza menu (wonderful deal for Monday, any pizza and a drink £7.99). A little wait on the pizza due to it being made fresh, no worries there. It was delicious. I'd easily recommend anyone to go. Cannot wait to go again.

My family and I just returned from having a meal here. Had to queue at the bar to order food. I chose the carvery, my husband ordered fish and chips and my son had a pizza. You don't get your food brought to you by a waitress and had to queue for all 3 meals. I can understand with the carvery but for fish and chips!!!. The fish gets cooked and left at the carvery section. The queue for the carvery was around 40 mins so by the time it was my turn the fish had been waiting a long time. My Husband then could help himself to the dry looking chips on the hot plate. My son had eaten his food by the time ours were ready. There was very little meat left (5.30pm) so opted for a sausage and some gammon, which as it was the end piece was very fatty. Veg and roast pots didn't taste of anything. All in all s bit of a disaster meal out for my birthday. Won't be returning.

12 of us came for a family meal and all had different meals. The pizza, burgers and carvery were excellent, great value for money and the meals are so tasty. Planning on another family meal soon and this is where we are coming without a doubt.

Busy Sunday lunch time on Fathers day, had booked table and immediately taken to our table on booking in. However we were not told we had to order food at the bar so after waiting about 10- 15 mins we asked if we could go to the carvery and were then told we had to go to bar to order food and drinks. Having been to other carveries where you are seated and waiting staff then take your order for drinks and food which is not on the carvery and then tell you to go to the carvery we thought this was the same procedure. We didn't see any signs anywhere to say this was what you had to do, if there were any then maybe we missed them. Anyway despite this hiccup we had an acceptable wait until the dish we ordered which was not carvery was ready and all the food (fish and carvery) was very good.

Go regular on a Sunday for breakfast love the place great food great staff can be busy at times but what good place isn’t

Ate here prior to the Stereophonics gig in Cardiff. Beef baguette and Chicken wraps were really good value with the chips and salad. Did have to wait a while even though it was fairly quiet. Food fresh and worth waiting for.

Haven’t been here since it’s been refurbished, we both had a carvery, it wasn’t busy so we didn’t have to queue, everything was hot and all the dishes were full...

Our visit wasn't a one off. It's our local carvery, and to be honest it's no longer a good value meal.

I booked a table for 2 at 6.30 on a Wednesday evening. I had to wait a while to place our order for food as there was only one bar attendant, the wait was repeated later when I went to order drinks.

Three of us had lunch in the Holly bush, the burgers were well cooked and you helped yourself to chips salad etc. we had a bottle of Chardonnay which was well priced. Definitely go back again.

Booked our table for our family on Sunday .We all enjoyed our meals .Some of us had the carvery and some had the pizza. All cooked perfect . Nice friendly staff very helpful and polite .Look forward to going again soon .

The options that are available for the breakfast was great. Also being able to choose from the options and you can go back as much as you want. Fried bread was my favourite.

Took my parents out for pre birthday meal. Two of us had carvery which was OK, one had steak pie with veg, the cauliflower was hard. One had BBQ chicken pizza, had to wait ages and when it came was totally disappointed, hardly any topping...

Came here for lunch with family as was impressed with the refit, food was really nice like the fact they now do pizza so great for keeping the kids happy as well, there is a salad bar as well as they veg and chip counter...

Visited for a family meal late afternoon . Food was pleasant , and fresh (although I would have liked to seen cabbage and swede available instead of frozen green beans ). Wait on certain items (ie. the burgers and pizzas ) but given the busy period the time waiting was acceptable . What spoilt the sitting was the blaring music/noise from the bar area (karaoke ) .... it was off putting and spoilt our family get together. If Karaoke must go ahead then a more suitable time would be appropriate (Ie. 9pm, when young children /families aren’t having a meal together ). Apart from that it is a nice place for all ages and friendly staff .

We booked a table for an afternoon meal on Easter Sunday

First visit since this has changed to stonehouse and was disappointed, Carvery was lovely and lots to choose from, even offering pizza selection alongside carvery as a nice change. Reasonably priced meals for the food served, lovely service. Definitely will return

Visited today with family who are visiting for Easter. All enjoyed our food. The carvery was great the fish was lovely and the pizza and salad was extremely tasty. A great much needed refurb has been done. Staff are very friendly especially the chef doing the pizzas.

We visited for the first time since its refurbishment and we were not disapointed. Lovely Breakfast Selection, piping hot, and the whole decor was much brighter and cleaner looking. I do think that charging 89p for a portion of mushrooms is a bit out of order, why not include them in the Menu????? We enjoyed the breakfast so much on the Saturday that we returned on the Sunday..Very Good Value for money..But please can you sort out the ladies toilets, they are nicely decorated now, but two of the toilets were blocked..We will be returning soon to try the Carvery..

Food is actually ok but we were given plates with a thick residue so tried to find cleaner plates without success - YUK!! . Staff thought must be the dishwasher so obviously buying cheap dishwasher tabs which is not acceptable for a food venue.
