Popped into Saddlers to see what they had for a takeaway picnic lunch to accompany a long Pennine walk. Absolutely amazing choice of savoury mini-quiches, other savouries and cakes. Ended up with the Mediterranean vegetable quiche, the savoury Chelsea bun and a slice of Bakewell Tart. The quiche was delicious - lovely light pastry and packed full of vegetables. The savoury Chelsea bun was uniquely delicious - garlicky, buttery, cheesy and covered with a sprinkling of seeds. You must try this! I saved the Bakewell for later - and it was the best Bakewell I've ever had. Pastry just right - light, crumbly and gorgeous, with just the right proportions of jam and almond. The owners were lovely, there's a great atmosphere in the quirky and stylish interior, and when I'm next in Alston I'll be trying one of the breakfasts, which all looked delicious. You won't be disappointed.

The best Bakewell Tart I have ever tasted. Moist frangipani subtle jam crispy pastry. I bought another to take away. I only wish I had a bigger appetite as the rest of the food looked great too.

We don't often leave reviews on places as we always think everyone is looking for something different. However this place was amazing . No matter what you are in Alston for this is the place to eat , or even a coffee and a pie. We went with our 2 children . The Chef , waitress and their son were fantastic ! nothing was too much trouble . The service was 5 stars, the choice on the menu 5 stars , and the food well above 5 stars. Thank you for having us 🥰 and catering for the kids .

I have to be honest we stumbled across this as the other cafe in the village was so busy we couldn’t get in. We arrived at 1200 to absolutley nothing at all, no scones, cakes, pies, quiches etc, only a sausage roll left and it was bought by someone who walked in and asked for it after we had sat down. Even though she said can’t order at the till. Slow service because it’s small, they did food, and it looked nice, but didn’t want a sandwich as it was only 1200. Wanted a cuppa and a nice scone or piece of cake. Advertised as a BAKERY! And they have 4 loaves of bread in the window, just on show. We actually thought they were fake because they didn’t seem to be the best, but no they were real. Owners friends were in at the table next to us, and they sat just saying how great they were and how patience is important. Little bit of customer service “welcome in guys, I am just doing an order but I shall be with you in a few minutes” would go along way, or a menu, just say at the table waiting for her to finish making drinks is not really good service, or the man who cooks could of popped over, it’s literally 2 seconds away from the grill, I’m sure the bacon he had on wouldn’t of burnt.

The most wonderful bakery products - quiches, breads, bakewell tart - kept me sustained while in the area for a couple of days. Nice design and atmos. As others have commented, customer service did let it down a bit. On first visit I planned to eat in and took a seat on one of several vacant tables, but had long wait to be served. Server was around some of the time, and could have just advised me she'd be a while getting to me. Cook / chef / baker didn't acknowledge me - again, he could've just had a quick friendly word. Felt ignored and increasingly uncomfortable and considered walking out. When server did return she was friendly, I got quiche to go and it was delicious. I do understand how serving shop and table waiting can be tiring etc - just a few tweaks like policy of someone telling you they'll be with you as soon as they can (and the food'll be worth waiting for!) would make a huge difference.

Top quality food and chilled vibe. We made a detour of about 40 miles today for lunch to this cafe when travelling from Newcastle to Carlisle. We’d been here for the 1st time about 3 weeks ago and loved it. Well worth it.

Sadly the place is very shabby and could do with a good clean. Shelves near us were covered in dust and cobwebs. Visited for coffee and a snack. Sadly, at 12 midday, no tea cakes, no scones, no cakes, no biscuits. So just had the coffee. Lady who was taking orders clothes were covered in food/flour, wearing an apron would look far more hygienic and professional, and a young lady who brought us our coffees, one at a time, looked as if she’d just rolled out of bed. Our visit was very disappointing and we won’t be back.

We stopped here after feeling harried by the cafe at the station (which also seemed to have sold out of everything). This place was a breath of fresh air. It’s understated and low-key with friendly but unobtrusive staff. It was refreshing to see the rare stotty option on the menu. The bread for our sandwiches (£2 cheaper than the other cafe) was the best I’ve had in months. Minor point: yummy-looking cakes could have been covered up on counter. We left very satisfied.
