Pros. Nice food and the waitresses were lovely , and efficient. Nice location. Cons. Quite a lot of “rules “ inflexible attitudes from some staff. Possibly only locals preferred….

Lovely Sunday lunch, couldn't fault the food. Service is a bit meh, a waitress asked to take our food order before we had even had a drinks order taken. Ordered mains when drinks arrived and food came in good time. We were rushed to choose a pudding but then no one came to take be order for a long while. Puddings were lovely though. We asked for the bill but it never came, waited a good 15 mins so paid at the bar. Food is great but service is iffy

We didn't have a booking and even though they were fairly busy they fitted us in with a lovely table near the wonderful view. The staff were friendly and accommodating, with one member even taking photos of our group on the balcony outside before we left. The food was 'top notch', with nothing to fault. I would certainly recommend this venue for a lovely relaxed lunch.

Phoned ahead and was told they could seat us at 8:30 pm. When we arrived the grumpy boomer at the bar declared there was no room at the inn. No apology that we'd been misled on the phone, no suggestion of alternative places to go. Decor seemed nice but the salty ambience left of the staff left a poor taste.

We had a really lovely evening at The Rydon Inn. We booked a table for 4 and arrived to a very full car park and thought ut oh, I hope it’s not too busy for service. We needn’t have worried. We were greeted well, asked if anyone had any allergies. No. Then seated. The pub was very busy, lively with a really nice atmosphere. We were served throughout the night quickly and attentively, there was a good level of staff working. The food was delicious, we all chose different starters, mains and puddings, so we got to see a good range food. Food arrived hot, and well presented. Water was brought to the table without us needing to ask too. Value for money, I’d say on par with most venues now. After reading other reviews, our experience didn’t reflect the low score others had experienced. Maybe there’s new staffing and a new chef now. We’d recommend anyway, we’ll be going again soon.

We came here as we needed somewhere to go on a Sunday evening when staying in Halwill. The place is beautiful, a lovely barn conversion style pub/restaurant which is decorated nicely too. I had the small fish & chips which was delicious. The small is plenty for £10.50, when you consider the large is £16.50! My husband has the chicken & chorizo burger which was okay, but the burger came with no salad or sauce in the bun which made the price tag of £16.50 a little hefty in my opinion. They do have an entirely gluten free menu which is a huge perk if you are visiting and need gluten free options. The service was okay, not always service with a smile and I wouldn't say the price tag always matched the quality of the meal, hence a 4 rather than 5 star review..

The cheesiest garlic bread starter ever! At £6 it seems pricy, but it’s a huge round of bread absolutely smothered in garlic butter and cheese. Shared 2 in our family of 4. First impression is outside, it's clean and tidy. As we entered, we were immediately greeted and seated by friendly staff. The restaurant is spotlessly clean and furnishings and decor well maintained. One thing I always look for is clean tableware. I was not disappointed, clean and polished. We are on holiday and headed to this pub for a meal. Our 25th wedding anniversary. Why did we bother. I wish we had read the google and Facebook reviews before we went. Our mistake. Awful food, poor quality and most if not all is frozen. Not cheap so one would expect better quality. We were surprised to see a meal we returned was still on the bill. At the till we were told by a VERY rude and LOUD woman (black short hair mid 60s) that there was nothing wrong with the meal we returned as she had tasted it, the chef had tasted it, staff had tasted it and another guest enjoyed it and we still had to pay for it. We refused and were horrified to witness her reaction - she began almost shouting for everyone to hear near the bar saying there was nothing wrong with the fish. (It was grey and watery). It was very embarrassing and people were pulling very shocked facial expressions nearby. The pub charges £18 for large fish (S&J Fisheries supply for about £3.50). You get what you pay for. Many reviews have mentioned a rude member of staff, it is probably this woman. Very unprofessional. She refused to give us a VAT receipt and even laughed with people that we had complained about the food. They appear to be recruiting at the moment for a chef. If you have experience of using fresh food of a good quality please apply. If you run a leadership program please send invite to this woman. The pub is apparently losing business according to our holiday host due to the quality of the food and the attitude of the woman at the till. Avoid. Keep away. No one needs to be shouted at on holiday trying to celebrate a special event. The whole episode at the till really upset us. If you want an argument head there if you want better food make yourself a picnic. Google reviews, Tripadvisor and Facebook reviews mention “rude staff”. I suspect it is this same woman. Our local holiday host explained this morning that she has heard similar experiences to ours. Shocking for a pub to have this reputation.

We looked up the Rydon Inn as we wanted a pub half way between Monkleigh and Bude to meet up with our friends. It said On the web they shut at 10.30pm so arranged to meet at 7.30pm. On arrival the manageress was abrupt verging on rude when we said we were drinking only and tried to push us into a snug where we would have had to move all the furniture round to avoid shouting at each other. A very nice young waitress said we could sit at a table. At 9.40pm when the last of the eaters had left we were told that it was not really a drinkers pub but begrudgingly allowed another drink. The manageress said she was not interested in what the web said, when the eaters had finished they cashed up and closed. I will not be going back again or recommending to anyone. The manageress needs a personality injection and a lesson in hospitality, her attitude was disgusting. Also why advertise a closing time you have no intention of sticking to.

Awful so over priced when food is so mediocre. Have given it 2 tries now, never again. We were appalled to see another diner being given corn on the cob and no spears so had to use 2 forks to manhandle it to her mouth. Our meal was sad, gammon far too salty the chips looked like chips from the chippy and not fresh chips. The desserts had a biscotti that could have broken teeth, and the coffee was horrid. And they charged us £114 for that rubbishService was a disgrace and why oh why do you refer to diners as 'guys' that is Mcdonald speak...sir or madam would be nice our impression was that the serving staff have no idea. There is no designated server for the tables. And the chef left long before the diners had finished. Server's were just playing at serving this restaurant needs to get real there's a lot of competition out there. And they lie, they told us they would have to fit us in early because they were so busy later that evening and yet when we got there and left at 9:15 there were hardly any covers at all. Called on Tuesday lunch time 5 of us and 2 dogs - we had previously read on their website that dogs were welcome on the deck area but apparently we weren’t ! It was a cloudy day but not cold , our daughter had taken our 2 year old grandson inside to the toilet whilst the rest of us were sorting out where to sit on the decking - the conservatory door was then unlocked by a staff member , but it was only when our daughter came back she had bern told they were not serving food outside because of the weather (what weather ??) There were about 6 cars in the car park so they certainly weren’t busy . This business clearly does not want your custom, and looking at other reviews we are not alone in thinking this . I seriously would take your money somewhere where you are welcome rather than take you chance here . I thought hospitality needed our support -clearly some do not .

What an odd place this is. Our first attempt to eat there was met with a surly refusal because we hadn't booked (they were at least half empty at the time). As this is one of the few eateries in the area, we swallowed our pride and booked for a few days later and returned. The Rydon Inn is a weird mix of things. From the outside this looks like an old pub that's been given a modern makeover; inside, the mix of wood beams, interior thatch work and cold lighting make it feel like a novelty restaurant at a theme park. The duality continues with the ambitious menu that includes venison and Dover sole, but is presented on a plain laminated page, so dog-eared and uninspiring it would look more at home in a 1970s lorry driver cafe. That being said, the food was really nice (I had the venison) and at a good price. On the night we were there, the service was really poor. It started well with a smiley greeting and swift drinks order, then things started to slow down and we were waiting over 30 minutes after our main course for anyone to come and clear the table or take a drink/dessert order. When we mentioned this to a passing waitress, she snapped at us, despite us being soooo patient with them.As we'd been waiting so long, I asked for the bill to come with the desserts. It didn't arrive and we had another wait getting that sorted. We understand they were very short staffed (thanks Brexit) and one server was very new, but they were very far from busy (particularly by the time we got to dessert) and we felt completely abandoned. The non-existent service meant the restaurant missed out on several rounds of drinks we would have ordered, and we didn't leave the tip we would have usually left. There's a lot of potential in The Rydon Inn, and I leave this negative review in the hope the management learn from our terrible experience and realise that they need to invest in staff, staff training and staff management... and some better lightbulbs.

However, in terms of the meal, one of us had to send back a steak because half of it was gristle. As a vegan, I was impressed with the vegan menu as it is nice to have a choice. Unfortunately, the vegan bean burger was not nice at all. The patty itself was bland and the texture was awful. It was paired with hot pineapple and avocado inside a bun with no sauce. The pineapple did not go well with the burger and the avocado was hot and soggy. On a brighter note, the vegan coleslaw was nice. Overall, not a great experience and would not recommend.

If you want fantastic food, friendly service and a beautiful setting then The Rydon Inn is the place to visit. We tried to book a table for a Friday night, it was fully booked and the lady on the phone was so apologetic that she couldn’t fit us in that we tried for lunch time instead. I am sat at the table here writing whilst eating the most delicious creme brûlée. We have been made to feel very welcome and the food has been second to none. Rydon Inn wish we had found you earlier in our holiday.

We are staying in a cottage a few miles from holesworthy , and we noticed the Rydon Inn en route to our cottage . We arrived on Wednesday evening without a booking , it was very busy but they said they could fit us in . Within minutes we were shown to our table , given menus . Our drink order was taken , drinks were brought our main order was taken . My wife had the Thai fish cakes , I ordered the halumi cheese starter , for mains my wife ordered the sea bass from the specials menu and I ordered the 8oz sirloin with peppercorn sauce. The starters were brought within 10 minutes , they were delicious. They were cleared and again within 15 mins our mains arrived. My wife said the sea bass Wes perfect, the veg cooked perfectly, my sirloin was cooked exactly as I ordered , rare . It was excellent. Everything was perfect. I read an earlier review on here the diner only giving one star . Well to the owners and the team keep doing what you are doing , people like that reviewer need to walk a mile in your shoes after the 16 months you have had . Well done and thank you Steve and Jean

Excuse the pun, but the evening we had at the Rydon Inn was underwhelming for a variety of reasons. The restaurant is situated in a wonderful setting, and the interior is brilliant, however, unfortunately this is where the positives mostly come to an end. We were only provided with 3 menus between a party of 8 which is not a massive issue but made the initial experience a bit of a pain. Admittedly service was swift and our drinks were ordered and arrived in good time, however when our server come over to take our food order we were only then advised that the they had no gammon. Four of eight of our party had decided on the gammon, so we then had to take the extra time to revise our choices. When ordering, one of our group had asked for a recommendation between two options, the server rolled their eyes and offered no helpful input on what to order, simply voicing that they had never tried either of them so did not know. I had ordered a medium sirloin steak for main, which was well done when served. We let the server know that the steak was overcooked, they offered to replace the steak but I didn’t fancy waiting 15 minutes for the chef to remediate his mistake, whilst I watched the rest of the group tuck into their meals. The server said that was fine, but did not offer to take the meal off the bill or offer any complimentary drinks or desserts as a form of compensation or apology. As a result, we ended up paying £26 for a sirloin steak, that was unfortunately bland and cooked well over what was requested. The other meals were okay, but nothing exceptional, the fish was noted to be bland and the chips offered nothing that a cheap chip shop couldn’t provide. We were expecting an enjoyable evening, but left feeling pretty disappointed.

We had dinner here and really enjoyed it. Sat outside as we had a dog so thankfully it wasn’t raining as there wasn’t an indoor alternative with the dog. We had deep fried halloumi and prawns to start which were fantastic- very fresh. I had the special of sea bass with prawns (amazing!) my husband had the lamb cutlets on the special board which was equally great. Our daughters had a burger (lovely) and the chicken katsu which was the only disappointment. The sauce was very thin, watery and tasteless but the chicken was great. All in all it was a great dinner and the bar man fashioned a great Campari alternative of an aperol spritz too. The staff were lovely and we would definitely recommend coming here for dinner.

We had a lunch here, a couple of 70+'s enjoying their first bit of freedom. We booked a table for 2. When we got there the staff were busy serving, but as they passed us came a subtle nod and mouthing we will be with you in a minute. I like that it means you have been acknowledged and knew you would be dealt with. Within minutes one of the ladies who acknowledged us and took us to the table. Within minutes we were served drinks and after 5 minutes to settle, our orders were taken. In about 10 minutes our orders were served, really hot and presented perfectly. The service carried on like this for our sweets, coffee and requesting and paying the bill. Dare I say the food was excellent sourced from local produce and good hearty servings. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating with views over local countryside. Big car park and the place is immaculate, including the toilets. Tables were thoroughly cleaned and disinfected after use. Thoroughly recommended .

Fish and gammon were overcooked and the chicken (with the risotto) was inedible. Massive sympathy for the young serving staff who were so badly let down by the kitchen and left to carry the can. Senior staff taking payment had no understanding of our complaints and no interest - dreadful.Suffice to say we won’t be back.

We also wanted to check if dogs welcome as a review said they were...Dogs are not welcome and even though it is a big pub inside and out 'they could not fit us in as so busy'...there was hardly any one in. With such a big out side space we would have thought well behaved dogs on leads could find somewhere to be welcome? And or at least put it clearly on your site? Staff very unhelpful.

Great place, no wonder it's #1 restaurant in the area. The ambience was bubbly, as is the case when people are enjoying themselves. The waitron service was a little 'iffy' at times; we had 4 different waitrons during the course of the meal. The menu is comprehensive, caters for all tastes. The food was lovely, mostly cooked to order. A good selection of reasonably priced wines sourced from a variety of countries. Someone (s) has given the wine/bar selection a good deal of thought. All the staff were pleasant. Cutlery/crockery/table was clean and no chips or cracks. The only negative for me was the volume of dogs & doggie smells in the restaurant. However, having said that, good idea to keep the hound fraternity in one area of the amply sized restaurant. We would definitely go again, maybe next time to eat outside on the terrace and enjoy the lovely countryside.

We went for our Anniversary with friends and left very disappointed. The place is very lovely and was looking forward to the meal but sadly it did not meet expectations, stale bread with the soup, then my friend ordered Crispy Duck Salad, well when it arrived it was 3 bits of cremated duck with a side salad and chips ! it was sent back as it was not as described, replaced with Fish and Chips which had been cooked in a hurry and was all watery inside, both men orderd Sirloin steaks described as being from the local butcher, well you can get better at a supermarket. The cost of these were £26.00 which is what you'd expect to pay for a fillet steak, their meals were very sub standard for this cost, The Manageress came over and took of the cost of one meal and that was it ! This will be a place we will never return to.

Booked this back in August, as with the Covid situation, we thought that it was best to book early. We called in on a Saturday afternoon our way to our accommodation, and before we could even stop the car a woman (dressed in a shirt with the Rydon Inn logo) who was exiting the premises mouthed "we're closed". My husband opened the window and said that we just wanted to check our booking for that evening. The lady (I use the term loosely) said "of course we're open". I almost felt tempted to cancel, but we went anyway, thinking that perhaps this person just wasn't in a very good mood.We arrived and were taken all through the bar area and were seated in what I can only describe as a conservatory. There was a table of six or eight young men, obviously the worse for drink, who were very loud and using some rather choice language. There was also another table occupied by a couple. Luckily, just after we arrived the young men left. It was quite cold in the area, and I overheard the other couple telling one of the staff about this, and asking to be moved. The waitress did come back to tell them that they could be moved to a table "in the restaurant". I wondered why we had not been in the restaurant in the first place, as we had booked so far in advance! The food was at best mediocre, so the whole experience was a letdown. We were attended to by at least five different staff members, which didn't present a very professional image.Wouldn't go back.

Lovely decor, Excellent COVID Regs compliance, all stall were courteous and cheerful and the service was faultless. We ate dinner there on 25 September and had a much better experience than the other review. Our food was good if not fabulous, and we all enjoyed it - crab salad starters, one dover sole, one chicken with Stilton and bacon sauce (that was not in the least watery) and one small rump steak, then ice creams for dessert. The best thing was how well they were doing the covid security; really well and certainly the best we’ve seen and even happy to take on board a suggestion to improve (from my husband who’s trained in aseptic technique). I certainly recommend this as a place to eat at the moment.

The restaurant itself & the decor inside is beautiful. The place from the outside attracts you & you’d think the food they serve lives up to that. Four of us visited here, my main complaint is with my meal and my partners meal. The other two enjoyed their meals, the prawn stir fry was apparently very tasty & it did look really nice. I had the burger, which was very bland & it looked like a kids meal. We chose this place due to the reviews and the images of the food, however I have to disagree with the reviews. The burger had no garnish, 1 piece of bacon, a hell of a lot of cheese (I love cheese, but it was just too much) and chips. My partner had the steak for £23, the steak and the trimmings were absolutely swimming in the water from the Mushroom. We told the waiter about this, but they just apologised and told us they would tell the chef. We also had the Stilton sauce, it was literally like Stilton flavoured water. The waiter did say he would get it replaced, but it was already all over the plate so it was a little too late. We were not offered a replacement of food, they were made aware we were not happy with our food. When we had finished the waiter asked us how the food was, in which we told him our complaints, again. He said sorry & that he would tell the chef. He asked if we wanted any desserts, which we answered no & he left. His colleague was stood next to him at the time, he obviously disagreed with how he had dealt with it. He advised he would get some money knocked off the bill, which I was happy with. He was very polite and apologetic. It definitely wasn’t his fault! The female manager then came over (possibly after being told about the complaint), she shoved the bill on the table without saying anything and walked off. We didn’t even ask for the bill as we wanted some more drinks. This made us feel as though they wanted us to leave & we felt rushed to do so. The attitude of some of the staff is really unpleasant & shouldn’t be blamed on Covid-19 & the pressures of it. We all feel pressure in our jobs sometimes, but there is no excuse for poor attitude and service from the manager. By the end, the manager did apologise for putting the bill on the table like she did. She said she wasn’t aware of the complaint we made, but how she put the bill on the table.. I don’t believe. The burger & Stilton sauces were also knocked off the bill, which I am grateful for. I wouldn’t recommend this place at all & I wouldn’t visit again.. which is a shame as the building is beautiful.I will add that the male waiter with the blonde hair was very pleasant and attentive. So thank you for that!

We have heard that a new chef is just starting work here. Perhaps this explains our sorry excuse for a meal. For the record we have had several excellent if pricey meals at this restaurant. This meal was pricey but a million miles from excellent. There was a weird-tasting buttersquash soup oddly paired with a far from fresh hard pork pie apparently found in the freezer, a tiny square of cheese and a portion of chutney. Did they run out of bread? Apparently knives were also in short supply because we ended up sharing one between us. There was an oddly flavoured sausage roll type thing with almost raw cabbage, fried carrots in skins and a separate dish from which three lonely roast potatoes contemplated this culinary car crash - and which were the only pleasantly edible items. All this in a restaurant formerly well-regarded for its excellent home-grown vegetables. We felt ill afterwards. We noted during our visit although the gardens were quite busy with family visitors few of them chose to eat in the restaurant. We did wonder why - and now we know. Rosemoor is not a cheap day out and hard-pressed families are not going to add to the expense of visiting the gardens with a bad expensive meal. Other restaurants are available and sadly we can't consider coming back unless we see clear evidence of improvement in Tripadvisor reviews.

A cosy, traditional Devon country pub serving a good Sunday lunch. The staff were very welcoming and the locals charming to chat with. We enjoyed a roast beef lunch with the trimmings, and a delicious bowl of bread pudding and custard. Good value at under £20 each and a lovely place to be on a rainy winters day. Car park just across the road on the A386, don't drive by, stop and decide what you think.
