Russels Fish and Chip Takeaway in Scarborough

The cod and chips here were just superb - moist and slightly flaky and cooked in light, golden-brown batter. We had to wait just a little while whilst our food was freshly cooked. The fish was clearly fresh from the sea - it kind of tasted of the sea like fish and chips should. The food is served in polystyrene boxes with old-fashioned wooden chip forks, but great despite that. We were able to sit down and eat at a table inside the premises. We both voted these the best traditional fish and chips we'd had during our week in Whitby....and only £8 per head. Only thing is that "Russels" seems to have morphed into "Angel Fisheries" as one other reviewer reported - its at the same address and decor/layout is the same but the premises frontage has been rebranded.

Walk up and down for 30 mins with the sat nav on walk and it kept saying we had passed it . . . Empty shop with a different name

We come here for lunch every time we're in Whitby and they never disappoint. Obviously, we couldn't eat in due to covid-19 guidance, so no people watching from the window, but the food was hot, tasty and beautifully cooked, and let's face it, that's why you go to a chippie?We will be back as soon as we can, it's a highlight of our visit.

Absolutley delicious fish and chips that were cooked to order and piping hot. Some limited indoor seating available. Very welcoming and friendly staff.

Me and my husband went here today just for a snacky portion of chips. When the girl served me them they were the whiter than me without my fake tan on...I ate one, decided NO WAY, and went back to the counter and said that I couldn't possibly eat such undercooked chips. At this point I'm guessing it's Russell who came over, hand picked a chip out of the heated area they are kept in and told me "they are cooked"...I said I liked mine browner and asked could he just put them in the bin! He completely refused and told me to take them with me. I walked over to his bin and used that! He then told me in I'm sure what was his kindest voice to "f**k off"!! (I hope your current customers heard that!) I told him I'd be leaving an excellent trip advisor review to which he wasn't so pleased. A lady came over at this point, wondered if it was Mrs Russell, she never spoke and with his big fat attitude I'm not surprised. LOOKS LIKE RUSSELL IS THE BOSS! Anyway just incase any reader is concerned about our hunger, all was well, we got some lovely chips a couple of shops along (forgot the name) or I can recommend MAGPIE from previous visits. No fingers have been pointed at me in there or any foul language used!!

We called in today on a day out in Whitby, because we knew they were the best fish and chips for miles. Very clean and friendly service, and they were happy to let in our 4 legged boy. Would definitely recommend.

Called in for fish and chips on way back to the car at teatime, had superb fish both haddock and cod! The shop was extremely clean with surfaces being cleaned all the time we were there! Well worth a visit in place of the more advertised places!

Every time me and the wife visit Whitby on our motorbike we always go to Russel's chip shop, We went yesterday Sunday 21st April 2019, Not the same people we have seen before and know behind the counter. The fish is advertised on the shop counter as having no bones. We always ask for Haddock with the skin off, the girl taking the order shouted to the cook 2 haddock skin off. The order came really quickly which was really unusual. We left the shop and walked to a bench by the Co-op, there we sat down and started eating the fish and chips that we had been so looking forward to, as soon as i put the piece of fish in my mouth i found a bone, not a small bone either also both our fish had the skins still on which put us off straight away, next mouthfull another bone then another and another, i got so fed up with having to dissect every little morsal of fish in my mouth before i dare swallow it that I threw a good ¾ portion of my fish in the bin and it wasn't cheap. What a waste of money and Russel's has now lost a long time, loyal customer., We will now travel 26 miles down to Harpers fish and chip restaurant in Staxton on the A64 near Scarborough as you can guarantee you will get perfect fish and chips there even in the take-out section.

Got my order wrong from the get go....Eat it anyways made me ill food kept repeating on me all so spend the next morning being sick wouldn't reccomend

My daughter worked here the staff , place and everything was brilliant and very helpful. She started working here before the six weeks Holliday's and ended up being there about 16 weeks.

After a long days fishing out at sea Russels fish and chips certainly hit the spot. Freshly cooked, batter to die for, ample portions and chips how they should be. Our whole family prefer Russels to the more well known purveyors of fish and chips down the road. Give them a try, you'll be pleasently surprised.

we were stopping not far from this establishment so decided to try it one evening but was very disappointed I had fishcake and chips the chips were cold and the fishcake was not nice and I threw it in the bin will not be going back

this is not a posh fish and chip shop but it does offer some seating and the food was hot and tasty and a reasonable price. The staff were friendly and I had plenty of food to eat

Ordered loads from here, the service incredibly fast, the food was hit and tasted delicious as well. There is a seating area around the outside of the chippy as well. My elderly mother sat down and without even asking, the staff brought her food to her. Thanks that was great.

Visited here today with my friends. I put my order in at the till and as I was waiting for my change the person who was very rude he throw my change into my hand which was not very good customer service. When my order was called out since I got scampi and a drink the drink was missing so I had to buy my own drink. Also another member staff spoke rudely to another member of staff to say weather I was served or not but I was already been served.

Visited here today. Always used Russell’s for spam and chips when we come to Whitby but won’t be rushing back. Small price increase which wasn’t a problem but poor customer service from the two lads that served us and the chips where as if they had been warmed up and portion sizes where small!! Not worth the money anymore. Very disappointed.

We had the best fish and chips we have ever had on the East coast. We got a great welcome, our order was taken efficiently we were even asked if we wanted our fish skinned. Food cooked to order so fresh and absolutely perfect. The team serving were very friendly and made us feel welcome. Highly recommended will definitely be back.

The owner has terrible customer relations he screamed at us for basically asking if they did a childs fish and then requesting a sausage cooking. Screaming that he will only serve one person at a time! May i add there was one other couple eating and only our group ordering!! My sister left without ordering and so i told him his attitude as a shop owner was disgusting and that as locals we have eaten in most takeaways in whitby and never came across such a bad attitude! I will never eat there again!

A good old-fashioned style British chippy! And it was fabulous - not only chips but we were offered (and got!) "batter bits" - it took us straight back to our childhoods - you have to be a certain age to know what "batter bits" are - and it was all delicious - but if you can't get decent fish and chips in Whitby then where can you?

Lots and lots of places to eat and found this place. Got some seating inside with a view of the harbour Excellent priced compared with others and big portions would recommend and would go back

I grabbed some fish and chips for my tea before heading to my B&B.Nice sized portion, not too big but plenty even for me! Very nice cod and the chips were excellent ( I hate it when you get the scarf ends).I like the fact you can sit in for no additional charge and avoid the gulls!Salt and vinegar is out for you to help yourself too!

With my wife I visited today this fish and chips. My wife is fond to eat this. I prefer meat, so hamburger with chips. The personel was very friendly. When we tasted our meals we got very enthusiastic. We loved it. So when you like this food, this fish and chips is a good address.

Decided to have a run out to Whitby and whilst we were there we decided to have fish and chips for lunch. We came across this fish and chip bar, we were last in Whitby sometime ago, and this was new to us. The fish and chips was made to order and they were delicious. Highly recommended.

First time in Whitby for a long time these were easily the best cod and chips I've had the fish was cooked fresh along with the chips in proper beef dripping! They weren't greasey by any means but really tasty will be going again

Popped in before heading home from Whitby - had run out of money so we just grabbed some chips. Kids both said they were the nicest chips they'd had - I have to agree. Stools and 'breakfast bar' to eat at were a godsend after fossil-hunting all day.

Family of five lunch, this chippy was recommended by a local...it didn't disappoint....service was excellent and so was the food...the best fish and chips I've had in a long time , with equally good prices- fish, chips and peas £5.90... we ordered take away and there are stools to sit inside which is ideal... we visited Scarborough the following and the fish and chips was rubbish...go to Russell's if your in the area.....

Me and my daughter popped in during a visit. Just as good if not better than your fancy fish and chip places.and to be honest who wants to wait outside ages trying to get a seat for fish and chips.i had a large cod and chips and my daughter had a child's portion of the same. I have no complaints at all lush fish crispy batter and good chips not soggy at all. I had a tea with mine and in all just over 11 quid. Compared to what some people have the cheek to charge for fish and chips this is great.there is a simple sitting area to top it off. Next time I'm in Whitby I will be here again. Instead of queuing for ages just so I can pay a fortune for the same standard if not worse.

What a great fish and chip shop. We had a takeaway from here on our 1st night staying in Broadway. I had scampi and chips and my friend the halloumi and chips both with mushy peas. Lovely food with nice staff. Definitely worth a visit

Partner had Cod , myself Haddock, shared portion of Jockeys Whips & mushy peas. Both Fish were excellent but the Jockeys a little on the limp side & a tad oily hence a drop of 1 star. Mushy peas were excellent & Border had no complaints with his battered snag. Overall a good takeaway Chippy with ample seating inside, dog friendly & extra condiments laid on. It's also cheaper than most at around £5.60 for F & C. Pics provided.

After a bracing Boxing Day walk we were in need of a hearty and warm lunch. Called at Russels take away and was not disappointed. Ordered a fish, chip and peas meal and a separate fish which came in at just over £10. The fish was fresh and flaky and the batter was light and even though it was cooked fresh and served was not greasy at all. The portion sizes are plentiful and overall could not fault the food at all.

We were staying in the Whitby area for a couple of nights so decided to pop in to Whitby for Fish and Chips - we had not been to Russells before but were very pleasantly surprised.The fish was freshly cooked and first class - the chips were also very tasty.This is a lovely old fashioned fish and chip shop and my partner and I both agreed that they were the best fish and chips that we had had for a long time.We will definitely be returning to Russells on our next visit to Whitby.Sean and Pat ( Doncaster )

We cone here every year as we just live Whitby and also the best fish patties ever!! They are not fish cakes (parsley cakes in Yorkshire) they are two slices of totties with fish in the midge dipped in batter then fried...OMG... Amazing!!! Massive portions too..

And great chips too. Clean, pleasant service. What more can you ask for. And we even had a sunny day to sit on a bench and eat them!

Came here last Saturday with my two daughters are 8 and 4. I was going to order haddock and chips (for me) and a portion of chips with two fish as the girls wouldn't eat their own huge portion, but the friendly chap serving explained they did a small portion of fish and chips for something around £3.50, so I had two of those and one haddock and chips. We sat down on the bar stools and waited for our freshly cooked food which was brought over to us. Oh my goodness the portions were huge and delicious, I wished my husband had been with us to share as we ended up leaving some chips as we were so full! I must say as well, my daughter had drunk her water from her water bottle and the staff very kindly filled it up for us and brought it back over to my table! Can't complain at all. I will definitely only eat here next time we come to whitby, shame there aren't any toilets, but it is only a takeaway with a few seats so that's to be expected!

we visit whitby every couple of months and just walk by this takeaway as we always like to go and sit down in a resturant normally hadleys,we walked past yesterday and noticed this couple sat in the window eating very good looking fish and chips i said to my husband do you fancy giving it a go as they have seating on bar type stools for about 20 people,we ordered cod and chips twice plus curry sauce it only cost £5.70 for cod and chips excellent value the girl who served us was very pleasant she told us they wouldnt be long as they cook to order.in the mean while we sat and waited this german couple came in we then listened as the girl went on to explain to this couple what everyone eats which they ordered she was very funny and enthusiastic in the way she told them they ordered and sat down after about a 6min wait she brought our food too us i would of collected so this was a very nice touch,then the germans got theres well this was funny she gave them salt and vinegar and told them what they needed to do !!!! this girl is an asset to russells also the tourism of whitby we will be back the food was excellent the entertainment even better !!!! 10 out of 10 for service

Russell's in the Harbour is the best Fish 'n Chip shop in Whitby.Lovely fresh fish, crispy Batter cooked well. Chips Good. Not Greasy.Small seating area. Good clean shop with friendly staff.

I had avoided Russels in the past as I thought it looked like a chain chippie - now I know what I have missed out on! Been to Whitby a few times this year and this has been the best fish and chips so far, cooked to order, huge fish, chips that are properly cooked not anaemic and friendly staff.

Nipped in for tea... 2 x haddock and chips Scampi &chips with peas pot of peas 2 coffee's £20/ £25 Well located with nice views... haddock came without the tail but it was a very good chunky piece of fish flavoursome with nice batter. There was enough to share between myself and 4 year old. Eldest child enjoyed the Scampi... only downfall was that asked for coffee and recieved tea didn't complain as actually it was a nice sweet tea!! Young lady on the till was bubbly and welcoming. Would return again. Thankyou

It rained during my visit in Whitby and this is the nearest Fish & Chips from my hostel. I made a take out here and it taste actually good. Price is reasonable and the service is nice!

On a recent visit to Whitby called here for our dinner. I had Haddock & chips it was lovely & a good price. All cooked to order & the staff were friendly. Visited with family who all said they enjoyed there food. Compared to some of the other fish shops in the area it was very good value for money. There's a small indoor seating area which we were lucky enough to find seating & got served straight away but on leaving it was very busy.

The fish was nice and reasonable in price and the portions were very filling. The small seating area at the front was a bonus on a very windy day.

This fish and chip shop is amazing. You really must visit. I had a large code and chips with mushy peas. It was out of this world. Freshly cooked, large fish and beautiful chips. I've had fish and chips all over the UK, and this was the best yet! The staff are so friendly - nothing too much trouble - and also, there is somewhere to sit and eat your delicious meal. My husband had scampi which he says was the best he has tasted. Well done all round.

Whitby is thee place for fish, and I know people say visit the Magpie cafe, but Like Harry Ramsdens - I didnt want to pay a fortune for my chips only to feel disappointed!!! The fish was cooked from fresh - exactly as it should be, and the batter was to die for! We had cod and chips and tea and every mouthful was a delight. The staff are friendly and serve you with a smile. Deffo will visit again.

Chips were a bit underdone and soggy, and despite using loads of vinegar, I couldn't taste it! As if I'd just sprinkled them with water!But had worse! Filled a hole, and a large portion!Cod was ok.

Had the large haddock which was excellent. Huge fish cooked to order (which is how all chip shops should do it. Nothing worse than somewhere cooking loads of fish then leaving it out to go stale) with big white flakes tasting fresh and nice batter / chips. Others had cod and chips. Very good value too for central Whitby and friendly staff. Would recommend to anyone.
