Great fish n chips in Whitby. Reasonably priced compared to many of the chip shops in town. Friendly service, haddock and scampi cooked to order. Nothing was greasy, good crunch on the batter and a good portion of chips. It is cash only so come prepared, the closest cash point is in town.

Great fish and chips freshly cooked haddock and no we are not locals. Highly recommend however if you want to spend a lot more money at the magpie then off you pop.

Forget about the rest fish & chips go here they are 👌

Went to this fish and chip shop for takeaway whilst on holiday. Specifically chose the Haddock so it would be cooked fresh. Wish I'd asked them to cook it just under - so the fish is still just translucent. Unfortunately it was just a bit over. The chips weren't fresh either. The homemade tartare was delicious. It wasn't the worst fish and chips I've ever had - but coming to Whitby and having eaten in Treachers a few days before raises the expectations. The staff were really friendly. If I lived nearby I'd give it another go.

The moment I entered the shop I felt you could cut the atmosphere with a knife,they had a few customers in front waiting and when one of the the workers asked what they would like it was in a rude way , when I was then I asked I felt afraid to reply, supposed to be the better fish and chip shops in whitby ,let me tell you its the worse,everything we ordered was greasy and inedible,what a waste of money absolute garbage .

Had fish and chips from here the other night. They were bloody lovely! We even got some scraps!!! Very nice, would definitely recommend.

Placed my order and was asked if I wanted batter bits, I said no. When I got back she had put batter bits all over the portions of chips. I think this was done to pad out the portions. I also ordered a large sausage and curry sauce, but when I opened them we had been given a battered sausage which we didn’t want and the curry sauce was awful. Not the usual curry sauce you get from chip shops, but this was orange in colour and just tasted horrid.

Possibly the worst piece of battered cod I've ever had... I appreciate its a bank holiday but the fish looked like it had been sat for hours waiting to be bought. It was tough and dry and hard to cut through the batter. The chips were ok.

Great fish and chip takeaway and much better value than those in town. Opted for the haddock, which was cooked to order and well worth the wait - very fresh and meaty fish. Chips also good. Shop doesn’t look much from exterior, but very clean and nice service. Would recommend.

Driest fish I’ve ever had, not sure why the reviews are quite good. Never imagined we would come to Whitby and have a fish and chips as bad as that. A disappointing waste of money!

We were staying in a holiday flat nearby and it made sense to pick up fish and chips from here rather than go into town to the more well known chippies. The fish was a good size, well cooked and with crispy batter. It was the correct decision.

We arrived in whitby jst passed 7.30pm and was looking forward to a fish and chips supper. Fearing the worst expecting Riverside to be closed, were very relieved to find it still open. The takeaway was fantastic freshly cooked very taste. Got to be among if not the best chip shop in whitby. Well done guys keep it up 👍

I really don't like to leave a bad review but felt i had to be honest when writing this. I havent been back to whitby for many years, so today it snowed up over the moors , so whitby for fish and chips,I THOUGHT, well i can truly say fish and GREASE IT WAS, ALL ENDED UP IN BIN. Even my dog turned it nose up them, Plus to top all off , the only change i was given was from the lady in the shop, Opon returning home i checked my change and the cheeky C-W gave me a Euro coin, well you can have that back sometime, hopefully by the lack of new custom!

Been in Whitby all week and the family were ready to experience fish and chips here in this wonderful town of historical events , I have to say this was the only disappointment we have experienced this week ,what can I say the fish was hard and chewy and the batter was soggy ,chips were greasy as a old oil pan , you know the kind that you can feel in the roof of your mouth , curry sauce never have I tasted something so disgusting ,I really had hopes for this visit as someone said try this place , also for the price it was scandalous ,the worse I have had in quite sometime .

Earlier in the day the potato wholesaler told us together with several other locals and people from out of town where do the locals go for the best fish and chips. Well it’s here. Simple delicious good portioned fish and chips.

The cod and haddock was very nice, battered sausage was lovely. I’d only give it out of 10 with 10 being the best a 8.5. The only reason is the chips could of being done a little crispier. Other than that the whole stuff was very nice and would return again. :-).

Need to update prices online. Chips now 2.65 or 1.90. Pretty bad. Although the food is lovely, traditional fish and chips with plenty of flavour

Best fish and chips I've ever had! Batter is light, crispy and very tasty! Chips are soft and fluffy on the inside, with a slight crunch on the outside. The fish was perfectly cooked and tasted AMAZING! Definitely come here for some 5 star fish and chips!

Heard alot of talk about this chip shop what a disappointment food was totally awful had a pie dry and hard pastry chips just cooked enough to eat terrible.

My husband and I had haddock & chips Tom the Riverside Fisheries tonight. We had to wait for about 5 minutes or so for our haddock to be battered & fried. They only do haddock to order but that wasn’t a problem. The batter on the fish was light & very crispy & the portions were huge as were the chips. The BEST fish & chips we’ve had for a long time. When we visit next year, this will be the fish & chip shop of our choice. The staff were staff were also very friendly & helpful.

Superb portion of Haddock and Chips, freshly cooked. Best fish n chips I've had so far in whitby. Mr Chips is overrated and cost double the price paid at Riverside Fisheries just a short distance away. Will definitely recommend going again. Keep up the great work all staff at Riverside Fisheries Whitby.

Definitely a place for locals, pardon the pun. It only opens for a few hours (with bizarre opening times) in the afternoon, and given the queue, we go too. Some dishes are freshly prepared, and locals who know this jump the queue to shout out their order, even though there are 10 customers in front of them. But on the sign inside it says that only the haddock must be pre-ordered, so you understand my disappointment when I order the famous Whitby langoustines and they tell me you had to pre-order them. Also impatient with the hour-long queue, on the edge of closing time, I take the code. They have tons of it ready, in fact it is dry and tasteless. Ditto the potatoes, without salt and soggy. It's a shame we had been to London and Southampton a few days earlier, where Whitby scampi are served without any problems.

Highly recommended. The haddock was the best I've had, from anywhere ! "Regular chips" portion size adequate for one person, haddock cooked to order and done to perfection. Batter crisp and golden. Exactly how an English chippy should be. The queue of people out the door tells the story, but you will be served in a timely manner 👍Always go here when visiting Whitby. Never been disappointed.

Only came here as visited from Newcastle and my daughters were hungry Very expensive and no sign of any children's meals or anything very limited menu and quite expensive Would of liked to have left 5 star sorry

It seems locals get cooked to order as there were others Infront of my wife who waited for there's to be cooked. Ours came off the shelf.It was a Tuesday and the gush did not seem fresh. They were very highly recommended by friends, that's why I believe locals are cooked to order.

Awful meal tonight 9/5/22. Chips were burned but yet hard in places. I should have asked for fresh chips when they were being served, tbh that batch should have been thrown away. The Haddock was overcooked and dry too. We only ate half and threw the rest. Such a shame because the first time we visited it was the best. A real disappointment

Always come to Riverside when we visit Whitby . It's the best chippy in town !! There's always a queue and it's mostly locals whish is a good sign that it's good

Been coming here for years. Has always been the best in Whitby. However in the last few months the portion size of chips has literally been cut in half it seems. They do small and regular chips, regular chips is £2.50. the regular chips which is basically their largest portion size is literally like a child's portion size now. I'd hate to see their small portion size. If you want more than a handful of chips order two portions. Tasty fish, but sorry the chips portion size is now not value for money.

Visited twice during a weeks stay, have been been on previous visits and they always good…but our first visit the fish for all 6 of us wasn’t very good, over cooked a bit dry, chips excellent. Second visit of week a couple of us opted out of fish because of previous visit but happily it was excellent thick white flakes with great batter. The two that opted out chose sausages, spam fritters and black pudding fritter and they were very happy. Best chips ever!!!

Called in and ordered 20 portions of fish and chips. Collected it 30 minutes later. It was all cooked freshly and still hot and crispy when we all ate.

Yes proper fish & chips. Not sure if they have large and small chips options but I ordered fish with large chips (large chips to us normally to share). Alas not quite large portions of chips. Wished I'd ordered another portion of chips. Very Good value.

Very good , freshly cooked Haddock, I’ve been visiting Whitby for a good few months and though some places advertise cheap options on fish, this haddock and batter was the best I’ve had - ok the chips themselves were ok, the homemade onion rings were great but if you love Haddock, get yourself down to the fisheries . Great Job

Yes, you have to queue (the sign of a good chip shop)It’s so much cheaper than other chip shops in Whitby! The fish is AMAZING! Super portion sizes and choice. It’s worth a walk up to get your chips from Riverside!I don’t have fish and chips anywhere else!! Enjoy!

On the first occasion the food was of a satisfactory - good standard . On the second occasion , after queuing correctly outside the shop and following the visual instructions , I was told by the lady frying ( of whom had not yet asked my order ) that I would be served after the two people who were behind me in the queue … One of which did not adhere to the maximum number of customers allowed inside the shop at any one time or wear a mask … In these strange covid times SERVICE has never been so important . At this point I left the shop , service and manners is always key in the food industry take away or otherwise . Riverside fisheries would most certainly do well in “ Royston Vasey “ !

Order your freshly fried fish on arrival. There Haddock in my opinion having tried almost all in Whitby is the best, which is why it is frequented by both locals and holiday makers.A 5 minute walk from the town centre located opposite the boat builders Parkol marine..

Staff/owners very friendly and chatty,the food is beautiful,portions generous and still the price is very reasonable 10/10.

What a gem. Friendly service, but that was only the start A ginormous piece of fish with chips with gravy. The fish was probably the best I have ever had, thick meaty white flakes of cod , the batter crispy and not at all greasy, the chips full of flavour and the gravy was incredible and all very good value. All 3 of us thought it was outstanding.

This was my go to chippy whenever I visited Whitby. Always had a first class cod and chips. Oh dear where to start with tonight’s meal? The cod was so over cooked it had completely shrunk inside the batter, the chips were soggy and very greasy and to top it all off, the peas were luke warm. I shall be finding another go to chippy in Whitby from now on as it can’t be hard to do better than that.

These fish and chips are some of the worst I've had in whitby . After reading all the good reviews I was so disappointed to get them swamped in grease . Sadly I won't be returning.

Hmm not up to the hype. The chips were greasy and the cod was dry/tough. The curry source was an odd tangy orange colour and didn't taste that good.

Greasy batter and dry fish. Peas were nice. Expected better in a place like Whitby. May have been unlucky because there always seems to be a queue outside.

Beautiful fish butty, fish massive and absolutely cooked to perfection

We were staying in a cottage not far from this chippy. Having seen the queues in the well known places in town we opted for it. The queue consisted mainly of local people, which is always a good sign. I went briefly to the door to order haddock. When our turn came, it was ready, freshly cooked and quick to get back to the cottage with. Excellent quality and good price.
