Very nice people but the fish and chips were very greasy and soggy! Must have caught them on an off day!! Not bad prices though.

Popped in for fish and chips yesterday, wonderful meaty fresh fish in a light batter, cooked to order with crinkle cut chips, what a delight, cheaper than Whitby and no queues. Took me back to fish and chips of old.

Fabulous and cooked fresh to order ! Really friendly owners - pleasant surprise to find open on a Sunday. Super delicious - didn’t touch the sides - I rarely finish a full portion but this one I did and that’s no reflection of the portion size. Great find.

Varied opening hours but the fish and chips were excellent, fish was cod, lovely pure white flakes surrounded by crispy batter and the chips crisp and fresh. The welcoming staff were an added bonus.

Good portions, great fish. A marvel to the tastebuds, room to eat outdoors in front of the shop on a picnic bench. A gem, the way it should be, fish & chips the old fashioned way. Go there, you won’t be disappointed.

Staff rude opens till 7.30 go in at 7 and told we’re not cooking anything else, what’s the point sell up like you keep saying at get someone in who actually cares

I’m not exaggerating when I say the haddock and chips was the best I e had in my life . . . and I’ve had a lot. The batter was light and crispy, the haddock flaky and with a nice chewy texture and chips cooked to perfection. Owners were chatty and lovely. Price resonanable and I now know spuds are over £17 a sack. Worth a visit, worth a detour. Just fantastic.

Nowhere safe to park close by to the shop (all double yellow lines). Chip butty was one of the worst I'd ever had. It was bland and tasteless. The fish wasn't great. The chips are crinkled (unusual for a chippy). The bread buns are defrosted in front of you, which is best practice if you want a customer to return to your establishment. Photos are of a chip butty, fish and chips, spam fritter, peas and curry sauce.

The fish batter was a bit stiff when cutting into it but the fish itself was OK the chips weren't bad either.

Not impressed at all, laboured service, mediocre food (small) and so expensive for such small portions. How to get rich quick!

Good chippy. Crinkle cut. Would benefit from pickled gherkins and onions. The first and only time I have seen a salon-style hair spray atomiser used for applying vinegar.

The fish was nice, however was disappointed by every thing else, the chips weren't classic chip shop chips and more like crinkle cut chips from a freezer that you can get in a supermarket and were very greasy, the curry sauce was more like soup with bits in it and was microwaved, and vinegar was sprayed on with a hairspray bottle which doesnt work as i couldnt taste the vinegar and salt sprinkled on however you couldn't taste it, it is very expensive too, I got 4 cod and chips with 2 curry sauce and it was around £35, however staff were friendly. Overall I do not recommend and will not be coming here again. Also I would like to add in response to the owners reply to my review is that the average price for fish and chips isn't £8.25 and no wonder you lose customers if you try insulting them about their clothes ps. I wasn't wearing a David Bowie t-shirt

Visit hear every time we go to Runswick bay, Lee is friendly and welcoming. Fish is always amazing and fresh. Only time we have fish and chips is here..

Nice to have crinkle cut chips from a chip shop. Good service although had to wait as nothing ready. Chips tasted a bit bland, mushy peas had a bit of a weird taste but battered sausage was nice. 1st time here but think I'll stick to the chippy in Staithes as they are tastier and indeed cheaper

I had Fish & Chips, last night. The fish was excellent with nice crispy batter, and a good portion of chips. Excellent value for money and i would recommend this fish & chip shop.

The fish and chips tonight were so tasty. The batter was well cooked and crispy. Everything was cooked to order so piping hot. Crinkly chips were fab too. Didn't have far to take mine home as staying locally on holiday. Will definitely call back and I would certainly recommend to others. My dog, Maud also enjoyed her first taste of fish from a chippie. Asked if the chips were vegetarian. The cook told me they were vegetarian but not vegan because they were cooked in beef fat 😒 how does that work out. Please be ware if your vegetarian going here. Sorry had to edit my review due to owners response... Owner did tell me chips were suitable for vegetarians not vegans as they were only cooked in beef fat and did not contain any meat.... that's why I posted my original review. To his response my husband bought his fish and chips.... my husband is not a vegetarian and will eat anything...... well nearly anything..... he didn't eat all your fish and chips as he didn't like them. As for telling me to sod off you clearly don't like being corrected when you are wrong. Don't worry about me coming back to your shop I won't be as you do not cater for vegetarians.... well only the ones that eat beef!!! Owner deleted his comment

Just got into the holiday home and by absolute luck there’s a chippy open within walking distance opposite a pub. The people were lovely, offered a bag of scraps and the food didn’t disappoint. Great start to our week, thank you.

Very limited opening hours, maybe seasonal, maybe staffing issues, but well worth a stop to take away freshly prepared fish and chips.

Really great traditional cod and chips nice moist and well cooked cod and crinkle chips can't fault it were here for the weekend as a break away and will definitely be back, and very friendly staff too. Ordered our food by phone to be collected and weren't disappointed thank you

I was first attracted to this chippy by it’s one star review from an offensive vegetarian. Lee is a top chap and his fish and chips are first class. Take it from a none lettuce muncher, you won’t be disappointed.

Stayed at Hinderwell a couple of years ago and the fish and chips were amazing. Here again and they’re still amazing, we couldn’t recommend them highly enough along with the friendly service you receive !! Top marks all round, thank you.

Wanted to know if they was Yorkshire fishcakes or not. Man behind counter interrupted and was very ignorant towards my girlfriend if I was there he wouldn't have been but was not happy when told will definitely not be back as very greasy and was tight with salt and vinegar (1star generous)

Chips were like scraps from the bottom of the pan and fish with chewy batter, as if both had been warmed up from earlier. Just about warm. Never again.

The plan was to have Fish & Chips and take them to Runswick Bay to eat them in a beutiful place. We found this 'Hinderwell Chip Shop' close by and rang an rder in as requested. Fantastic, a portion of Fish and Chips that rivalled any we have had in nearby Whitby and served by a friendly staff.Now a firm favoutite for a return visit when next in the area. No more queueing outside in Whitby, we will pre order by phone and enjoy our may in beautiful surroundings if the nearby Runswick Bay.

Always lovely and friendly and absolutely gorgeous fish and chips, maybe have to wait a bit before the pre ordering as its so popular but so worth it. NOW you have to ring up and pre order which is a fantastic idea to prevent crowds. Lee you and your staff are lovely xxx

Perfect fish and chips every time; nothing is too much trouble. Sadly covid limitations prevented visits during Covid restrictions as local fish and chips essential for all family and friends when they stay.

Fantastic little fish shop and lovely staff. Used this chip shop for years from being a former local. I am now living in Redcar and despite all the the fish shops here I would still rather drive out and buy quality.Well done guys on staying open through the pandemic and following proper safety guidelines to protect yourselves and customers alike.

Excellent fish and chips. Equally superb customer orientated service. Working so hard to still serve throughout the current Covid pandemic. Currently running a very good and well thought out phone to order before collection system in order to keep everyone Covid safe which is well appreciated (and so avoid queues of people just turning up and expecting to be served on speck...and this is a very popular 'chippy' which during holiday periods would pre Covid have had people queuing outside the door). They will always still try and accommodate the passing request IF bookings allow.....but use common sense if you have it and at likely busy times book or be disappointed.

Very rude owner, was shouted at for not pre placing an order???? How hard is it for a chippy to throw a fish in the fryer. This bearing in mind no one was even in the Que!!!!! Avoid this place

The best chip shop in the area. Worth driving to if you're not local, they're that good. They serve 'Bits' too. I hadn't had those since I was a kid in West Yorkshire. The next time I'm in the area I shall certainly be popping in.

Had our evening meal from here recently ok n Friday evening. I rang the order through earlier which was a good move. We had haddock and chips. The fish and batter were well cooked and very nice indeed. Chips were crinkle cut well cooked and plenty of them. Staff were very helpful and polite. Well worth a visit.

Phoned at about 5 from Runswick Bay and order was ready to collect 10 minutes later - and was excellent! Great service and great quality.

We live in Hinderwell and as we have not been able to eat out in Lockdown have been having Lee’s excellent fish and chips each week. Early on Lee rearranged things so he could carry on opening, serving at the door. He quickly went to contactless payment and provided an excellent service for locals on his own. With tourists arriving the phone and book system came in, how else can a small local chippy with just two people do any more to satisfy as well as manage demand? The system works - rarely anyone else there other than maybe one person in front which is good with such a small pavement with residential houses either side. Then there is the actual fish and chips! Always a good sized piece of quality fish (and great sausages my grandson says), and crinkle cut chips - why so rare? - they are great!To those who have moaned on here - this is a small village chippy, appreciated by locals, so why not relax, understand how we work here, and follow the booking system as the food is so well worth the wait.

This is very good chippie but be warned due to COVID you have to pre-book a slot. We didn't on our first night but glad we did the next as the fish is a decent size and the chips nice and crisp. I thought I'd lost my card but when we rang despite being busy they took the time to look for it. You have to book because this place is popular with locals and tourists like us,

Arrived at 6 o clock on a Saturday night when visiting the area after reading the good reviews. We were rudely asked if we had pre-ordered and saying no, told they were too busy to serve us. Sent on our way.

A real gem. As a venue felt really personal and loved compared to some of the industrial chip shops we see now. Offered scraps and they were nearly as many as there were chips !!! The fish was great and the chips were tasty... Not just fat soaked potato... Off the beaten track, but we'll worth seeking out if you are in the area.

We went in today to get some food. And it was extremely busy. There were also only two staff who were really friendly and reasonable considering they were so busy! Also the food was delicious and glad to see they were still getting food out in as many ways as possible even during covid-19...... definitely be back! Thanks!!

I came to the chip shop on Sunday Evening , in front was a man swearing at the owner and a young girl behind the counter who had such a friendly face . All info on how to order food at these difficult uncertain times were displayed in the window and I for one would always double check the procedure anywhere with how things are at the moment , not this Man he abused the staff and I witnessed it, I can only commend you on how you dealt with this (I would like to say gentleman but he definitely was not) well done to you and your staff . I found ordering very simple and collection more so, Fish and Chips were delicious and staff very friendly . Well done to you all and I’m sorry you had to have an ordeal like you did I was ashamed for him .
